      You think you have it all figured out at this age (work wise). That you've been there and done that, but I'm learning and embracing that it never ends. You need to do what scares you! It keeps life interesting.

      I can relate a lot to your story, age, having kids, having been working with large clients in the past, trying to keep that paste, balancing work and life ...And then having to rethink and go back somehow to the starting case. I've known Chris since 1997 and I worked with him at his house back then. He's been in the industry for many years and a well respected company, and his new turn to help the industry is really awesome. You're getting great advice from him, (I wish I was sitting there too!). Thanks again for opening and telling your story, it stroked a chord for me too.

      Hi Rebecca, I think your site needs some Design love, I love the copy and I think it's very attractive, but some images are "cut" and it does look a bit amateurish and out of date.
      I hope this comes as a constructive feedback rather than insult, as it's not meant as one.

    two quotes that come to mind after watching this video: “growth happens outside of ur comfort zone” and “if u fight for your excuses, you get to keep them”
    i’m an introvert who struggles to “just talk to people” but i’m also starting to understand that i can’t let the fear of being uncomfortable stop me from trying to grow. esp when i KNOW that on the other side of my fear and comfort and excuses lies the potential for sooo many new connections, friends, experiences, opportunities, clients, etc

    This totally resonates with me. Funny thing, I actually reached out to a local brewery recently about helping them out and now I'm re-designing their crowler labels. I used the exact same tactic Chris describes ("I love what you do."). The power of asking. Solid episode!

When you help them fix their problems they will be more than glad to pay you well, recommend you to someone or help in other ways - these are some of the things I've learned from Futur's videos, so happy I'm seeing the bright side of life.     This is very helpful. I am even less social then she is. I use FB and Instagram to connect with people. I rarely leave the house and I enjoy my alone time. In a perfect world, I would never leave the house and I am 40 year old, self-taught late bloomer. :)

      I know exactly where you're coming from and yes it has been a challenge to come out of my shell as well.
      Feels too vulnerable but I keep on pluggin'. Chris is so very correct in his advice. It is rewarding most of the time.
      My biggest challenge at one point was "men." I discovered that some men were taking my attentiveness to listen to what they had to say the wrong way; perceiving me in the wrong way. I enlisted the assistance of my husband and other male relatives to help me figure out where I was going wrong in this area.
      Since I have done that, I'm not experiencing that issue so much any more. It was suggested to do a little role play via a mirror for better facial expression and body language clarity. This was done to try and get a sense of how I was coming across. Felt a little weird at first but I eventually acclimated to the practice.
      Hope your journey is moving right along in a peaceful and positive way for you.😊💖

    Another great episode! I was definitely more of an introvert when I was younger, being an artist that's kind of my default setting. But two things that have helped me: 1. REPETITION - the more you talk to people the easier it gets. It's still not my default setting, but it got much easier. 2. HUNGER - (Literally and figuratively) when your rent/mortgage is due, and you have to buy food for you or your family, I could speak to, and pitch the Pope. :-)

    I'm going to be 37 in October and was falling into thinking I can do everything myself and after watching this video I need to step out of my comfort zone and reach out to people. One thing I did focus on more is my blog. Been more active lately and went from 7k views a a week to 38k weekly in a month. Thank you for helping me get back getting back to maximizing the full potential of everything I do. 👍🏼

    Working on a new client, and during the initial phone call, I asked about budget and gave them an estimate. I also asked them if that was something they felt comfortable spending, and they said yes. That was my first time doing that, and I can tell you, it felt REALLY GOOD to get that out of the way right off the bat. Typically I would spend maybe a week putting together a really detailed proposal only to find out my estimate was way over their budget. It's crazy how fear of rejection has so much control on how we interact with clients.

    This is really good advice and it does work online too- you can develop relationships with companies on Instagram. It has happened to me multiple times. Just be very genuine and comment on brand pages you truly love and think would be a good fit for your services. Once they see your name enough, they may check out your page. And then they might think "hey, this person is a great photographer! I wonder if she would like to work for us."

    This is pretty liberating. As a shy person myself, starting off is very difficult. I think that a lot of what I feel is just having a hard time being enthusiastic enough to sell, because in order to do that, I have to overcome an internal voice that is very much afraid of sounding sales-y. Does that sound familiar to you? If so, do you have any advice?

    Question: if you go for the small companies that will hire you for $7.000 let's say to redo logo or brochures or any other printing material, then they need to have that extra money for printing all this material as well. How much do you say roughly it would cost them for the WHOLE project?
    Request (Please?!): I would love to see this great advice applied to an Industrial Design scenario. The thing about graphic design is that anybody could benefit from your services. However, if an Industrial Designer charges you $7.000 for a project, your client would still have to add at least an extra $15.000 -$50.000 or more to manufacture whatever is it that you designed for them. Prototypes, molds and manufacturing is very expensive, so it gets hard trying to get those small projects to start your own business. Any help, input on this? PLEASE!?

    Thanks a lot for another great Episode, and thanks for bringing it so quickly!
    I have a question for Chris about approaching new "small" clients. I am a very open minded person and I find it very easy to get to talk to just about anyone. But.... how would you approach a small company (small business in the neighbourhood). I mean they're already up and running, so they're shop is in business and they already have a sign out there with their name. So, how would you justify any work that would make them invest even more money and work to get everything taken down and put out there new logo, etc.?

      I was wondering the same thing! Alot of business in my area have crap design and websites. Iv tried cold calling a few and offering advice on what they could do to fix it, i then let them know that im open to offering more advice and assistance to help improve their business. But they all say that they’re fine and dont need help lol. I check back a few months and check out their site and they didnt take my advice lol

    Chris, I have a question related to the last episode, it's not clear for me how I should procceed when I don't have portfolio for my company, but I have plenty portfolio of another places where I've worked before, Thanks for another great video!

      Nicolas Misturi Vicente can you build a spec portfolio? Or just have a personal site with work that you've done elsewhere. Make sure to properly credit other companies. Get a client. Start building your own body of work.

    Chris you mentioned that you used to rely on sales reps to bring in work. What made you shift to doing it yourself?

      Bart Kuczewski I had no choice. Go out of business or learn to do it myself. We were pursuing something that our reps didn't understand.

    Okay I understood that 2 ways are to put value out there and approach people, witch is no problem for me because I am not an introvert (not an extrovert either). But I didn't really do any work to show yet, so when I walk in there and make them convince themselfes that they need a new whatever and they ask me "what projects of this kind did you do before?" And I'm like "ehmm.. none? But I promise it will be fire!" no one is going to believe that, even though it may be true. How do I go forward with having nothing to show?
    If you have a video about this witch I havent seen yet you can just link me instead of explaining everything again.

    Hey, one major problem I face is that i do logo and branding projects. I'm very comfortable with photoshop and illustrator and indesign. To become more advanced into branding, is this enough, or should I go into web and app design or visual graphics ??

    I like the tender greens icon on its own but something doesn't look right with the application, particularly when incorporating it into the type.
