Another name for the Balisong in the Philippines is "Bente Nueve" meaning "twenty nine" in Spanish. It refers to the original standard length of the Balisong which is 29cm.
I learned on a pair of bone handled filipino balisongs my step father brought back from his travels as a Marine in the early 80's. Twin dagger blades of carbon steel. Brass bolsters and liners.
@@sganicocchi5337 I’ll definitely have to take a look I’ve just started getting into flipping and general knife collecting so I’m not too familiar with pricing
Glad you like the craftsmanship in Philippine-made balisongs. The tradition continues with every piece hand-made by the dedicated artisans and smiths of Taal in Batangas. On the other hand, many of us here enjoy watching how exciting the art of bali flipping in the U.S. has grown with time.
What's crazy back in early days in the Philippines. Street gangsters, thugs and bandits used balisong as the most common primary weapon. We also call it "bente nuebe" meaning 29. Because of it's common 29cm blade size. When i was in highschool i used to bring one and always hide it in my socks in case of emergency or need. 😂 Just flip it when enemy is around lol! I still have my scars due to balisong cut during my younger days in street fights in Manila. 😅
I started learning how to flip using my Mother's rusty old Balisong that I cleaned up and restored, it was an anniversary gift from my Dad when they were still BF and GF. And I have to say, even though it's older than me, it still flips pretty well after cleaning it up and removing the rust. I would love to get my hands on one of those.
Original butterflies from the Philippines are "as you say" a work of art. Saw my 1st one from my friend, who's dad brought a couple back from military service.
i see a lot of people leaving the traditional pieces behind for the modern, theyre just different and tastes have changed. i grew up with my step dad owning a few so they hold a special place in my heart.
balisong adopted from the Tagalog word "baling sungay," which translates to "broken horn." This refers to the original handles of the knife, which were made from carabao horns, a type of water buffalo, deer horns, and sometimes bone
they were a rejected design for a military knife at one point but where quickly shot down, largely because of their multiply failing points, and time to ready.
Please show some self defense techniques with the balisong.. flipping is just part of its use.. american made balisong are 24s not the famed 29s bente nueve with bearing housing blades.. but american made are tougher sturdier more durable and much portable. Thanks for the great video...
Besides a really heavy switch blade or a big ass fixed blade hunting knife a ballisong is definitely one of the most intimidating knives you can get. Good shit
tried flipping FHM balisongs before for "artistic purpose" and they're really tough on the knuckles since the handles are made of brass. too bad mine had a hairline crack inside one of the handles and it snapped
There's no perfect balisong even to this day which makes it great a lot of rooms for innovation.. Maybe the reason behind why he said it was "perfected" in the Philippines because the very first concept of a butterfly knife was invented by a French sailor, but his design can only be used as a concealed knife but Filipinos made it not only to be easier to use but as multi purpose tool
There's no law that says you have to use the Philippine word for them though, is there? 'Butterfly knife' is just the English language name for this type of knife.
I hate living in Australia, balis are extremely illegal and there’s no local makers(that I know of) so I’m restricted to only trainers.. the artsea x nabalis collabs the closest I’ve come to getting a live blade but it’s still a budget knife and I had to sharpen it myself She also had to send it in two packages as “drone parts” and a “gardening tool” to get it through customs but I’m probably never gonna get my hands on anything like a serrif or krake raken tho which actually pains me
china has no known records of anything that even comes close to mechanically functioning like a butterfly knife, not even primitively closest thing to it was a french measuring tool back in the 1500's and even that is debated since butterfly knives were/are nonexistent in france or french culture
Dude! You lack at least 2 kinds of Balisong. One is all brass and the other kind is all stainless steel. The brass is for killing supernatural beings, gardening and it won't ever rust away. Does grow a patina though.

interesting that the handles touch while open. Function for the knife over flipping I suppose
veinte y nueve or 29 is the number term for the the butterfly knife. 29cm or 29 inches in blade length
Had one in bone, double edge spearpoint. Beautiful but somewhat limited flipper.
Wish I had one
