It's most definitely not the studio version dubbed over a live performance as the studio version is with Anette. There might be a bit of cleanup of the audio in post, but that's it. We know it's really live as their occasional mistakes are left in their videos. Floor's voice cracking a bit at the start of the last note of GLS at Tampere. Marko struggling with a passage at Wembley during "Seven Days to the Wolves". Tuomas with a brief flub of the keys near the end of GSOE. Emppu screwing up his solo during Alpenglow at Mexico City. Troy screwing up the low whistle during Alpenglow at Wembley, then catching a smirk and a bit grief (all in fun) from Emppu. These mistakes have all been left in the videos. Considering the Floor performs a lot of songs from Anette and Tarja's time, means that there is zero chance the studio version is dubbed over the live version. Even with her own songs, she doesn't perform them exactly the same as the studio version, so again, no opportunity for an overdub.

My favorite “human” moment in a live Nightwish song is when Marko forgets his line in Kingslayer (2018 Buenos Aires). He kind of pauses for a second and sings “fuck me” in key to what way suppose to be his verse lol.

Have to agree. As amazing as Floor is she's not always perfect and I have heard pitchyness and mistakes in some Nightwish concert videos. I'm almost 100% certain they used auto tune in post for DVD releases like the Wacken Open Air concert, but these concerts are all definitely recorded live for the reasons Bill has stated. I don't think Metal music fans would stand for lip syncing, even if it was Nightwish 😂

    • @billattercliffe8655

@@netflixandchinchilla Listening to earlier fancam videos, I don't hear much in the way of problems, allowing for the usual crappy audio. The pro shot ReVamp and AF videos don't sound like much, if anything was done to the audio in post and she sounds fine. The ReVamp videos sound like the audio was taken straight from the PA. I suspect that very little if anything had to be done for Wacken, etc.
During a chat with Tarja, both were concerned about their voices not being in "tour shape" so it is a concern for them.
Her voice seems to be changing with age. Listening to some of the recent AFAS videos, she seems to be working hard on the upper end of her range. Her high notes don't seem to be as free and the Phantom last note was definitely a bit flat. That said, her low range, which used to sound a bit forced, is now wonderfully rich and caramel smooth. It'll be interesting to see if it was just a matter of getting back into "tour shape".

Expert mixing. It is the reason that Nightwish has such incredible symphonic sound. You can thank Tomas for the brilliance. Not taking anything away from the musicians and Floor is a goldmine find for them. I can hear the orchestral instruments and they are real...not created by the synthesizer. A lot of bands pre-record back ground music and has it mixed for the concert. The mixing for Nightwish is beyond impeccable.

  • @pro-v7500
    @pro-v7500 Před 2 lety +45

Not prerecorded. The studio original was recorded by the previous singer Anette, not Floor (and they have VERY different vocal styles and timbres). The only pre-recorded play back is some orchestral hits that Tuomas doesn’t play with the synth and the choral backing. This wasn’t a very frequent setlist song, so they wouldn’t have done any studio re-recordings for just a handful of shows. Not to mention that they have never studio re-recorded any pre-Floor song/album. This is one of the reasons live versions of Nightwish is so frequently requested, it’s the only way we can hear Floor sing their older tracks.

Backing tracks for lead vocals are seriously frowned upon in metal genre. Very few artists worth their salt use them.

I imagine that Floor consciously does not want to sing typical classical or opera style here, but wants to evoke the atmosphere of ‘Thousand and one Night’ fairytale, imitating the way North African women could sing in Morocco or maybe more like the Egyptian’s? Or simply the Middle East. and that suits the song (I think) quite well.

  • @kimfabritiusdetengnagel2038

Nightwish always records and releases their live performances, including screw-ups - nothing hidden.
They want us to get the real vibe from the concerts - not something "polished".
When you have been to some of their concerts, especially the ones being released - you will know it.
By the way - Floor is far better live than in the studio!!! The feedback from the crowd are her gasolin - she can go completely Stratospheric when the right conditions are present, and the perfect connections are made. And the band follows her. Floor is an incredible front woman - with the skills and talents to match anything!

I mean the Ritz has great acoustics anyway. I’m not sure why this is the only track that’s ever been released on video from that show because the recorded the whole thing and their Video producer Ville Lipiäinen was there or someone that looks a lot like him. @@ZoeStibiVocalCoach: I think much of it was Marko, singing live.
He went into some territories that are unusual here, to bring some extra oomph to the song.
Like in the end you hear him continuing when Floor has already stopped, and often he's unusually high in his register in the harmonies here, pingy and nasal, so his voice cuts through more than backing vocals that are meant to be invisible.

    • @JariJuslin
      @JariJuslin Před měsícem

@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach: Check for example 4:08 and onward. Marko goes really high and sharp there on those certain parts of the chorus. But not all the time, just on those certain words and then he's back to a more blending and background vocals.
But he's the male lead here, not just a backup.

Maybe i can give you some background on the technical side: Prerecorded orchestral recordings, and a few backing vocals/choir stuff is running in a Protools session, which also allows them to have a synchronized click-track and also do timecode output for pyro/videowalls/lighting. All live-instruments are multitrack input into ProTools for recording and output to in-ear monitoring before it even goes to front of house. This setup also allows them to record the live-sessions as separate tracks easily. They may do some slight cleanups here and there for these fantastic live video releases (like the last 1% final touches, nothing crazy, but you know how it is in the audio industry..), but i've seen enough live-recordings of so many shows, what you hear here is definately live and Floor has done some realy realy realy impressive performances.

Note: rewatching the video, i kind of get where you're coming from, i think the video and audio are just a little misaligned that gives it that dubbed feeling. This is also a video that's not been released officialy on DVD, from their own archives so to speak. Probably who ever edited the video rushed a bit and didn't sync it sub-frame accurate. But it realy wouldn't make sense for them to mix audio and video from different performances.

Hi Zoe! Fanatical Floor and Nightwish fan here! I have to say that in all the reaction videos I have seen in the past two years I don't know of any that have reviewed the song "Sahara" and certainly not as one of the first ones hearing Floor or Nightwish. Also, Floor's solo performances are highly recommended. The key to the solo recommendations is that (as you would know as a singer), the quality of the studio acoustics and sound equipment is very important, and also the quality of the engineering mix at the end (I'm a paid purchaser of Steinberg Wavelab Pro 10 myself). That is why people recommend the "Beste Zangers" videos -- it's a pro recording in a properly mic'd studio. Floor also did a series of solo performances from her "Covid Cave" (i.e. her home) which are also examples of great singing, and the engineering mix is not bad (just one song had to be re-done: "Let It Go" from "Frozen" had to be re-mastered).
Usually we Nightwish fans are used to seeing a massive dump of recommendations from poster Gabriel Bardac, but I checked your comments here and in your previous Nightwish review of 5 months ago ("Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean"), and I don't see his post. So I will provide some links to the best Nightwish and Floor solo songs myself. Probably tops for Floor is the cover of the famous Lara Fabian song "Adagio", and my personal Nightwish favorite is "Poet and the Pendulum". Many vocal coaches prefer "Shallow", but I like heavier music more. But here are some of the links anyway:
Floor sings "Phantom of the Opera" with professional opera singer Henk Poort: czcams.com/video/plCScjvDOJM/video.html.
    Floor sings “Adagio”: czcams.com/video/KZRHLLM6AU4/video.html.

Floor sings "Let It Go!" from the movie "Frozen": czcams.com/video/plFqA0NMzds/video.html.
Floor sings "Que Se Siente" (in Spanish) from Beste Zangers at czcams.com/video/DfYeLUoqw0E/video.html.
Nightwish with Floor sings "Ghost Love Score" at czcams.com/video/JYjIlHWBAVo/video.html.
Nightwish with Floor sings "The Poet and the Pendulum" at czcams.com/video/iEzZRMthhXU/video.html.
Nightwish with Floor sings "Ever Dream" at czcams.com/video/1Xi4n8dJcF8/video.html.

Nightwish and Floor sing "Storytime" at czcams.com/video/pvkYwOJZONU/video.html.
So there's a good bunch to choose from! And it will solve everyone's complaints I see below in the comments about whether the sound is live or a recording or whatever.
    Keep well ... T.C.

I think this could have been remastered, edited afterwards. But there's the audience voice occasionally, so I don't think it's a studio recording on the live footage.
What impresses me hear in Floor's singing, is the rhythmic changes, coz this is more oriental than what Western singers, mudicians usually dive into.
And those lowering runs that I personally think as 'stairs' when the same vowel keeps lowering or rising step by step, and then after the lowering the quick rise.
Then after slow, dreamy phase of painting with a soothing brush, she needed to go to the fast syllables with more gravel in her voice.
So if there's no style changes, at least fast mood and rhythm changes, oriental way.
The song brings to my mind old Egyptian, biblical films of pharaohs and sheikhs.
I'm kinda like waiting Liz Taylor entering stage, carried by some shirtless strong slaves, she seated on her throne shaped like a pyramid in miniature size.
