R.I.P Ann Waychoff mother of the Nightwish Army.
    June 28th, 2020 .
Ann was a big Nightwish Fan.
And every new person who listened to NW, she went through a little chat.
And gave them some info about NW.
    This was her favorite song.
And this song belongs to her.
I like very much that Gabriel have continue Ann s work.... so her heritage is still here.

6:27 one of the best moments with Emppu and Jukka. Emppu did that a lot by having his back to the audience or just going next to Jukka's drum set to play. They have literally grown up together. Childhood neighbors and many world tours together.

And there forever remains that change from G to Em are the last words of the poem that is part of the song.
Lyrics, including the poem at the end, not played in concert:
The nightingale is still locked in the cage
The deep breath I took still poisons my lungs
An old oak sheltering me from the blue
Sun bathing on its dead frozen leaves
A catnap in the ghost town of my heart
She dreams of storytime and the river ghosts
Of mermaids, of Whitman's and the rude
    Raving harlequins, gigantic toys
A song of mea song in need
    Of a courageous symphony
A verse of mea verse in need
Of a ppure-heart singing me to peace
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
All that great heart lying still
    In silent suffering
Smiling like a clown until the show has come to an end
    What is left for encore
Is the same old dead boy's song
    Sung in silence
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
A midnight flight into Covington Woods
A princess and a panther by m side
These are Territories I live for
I'd still give mt everything to love you more
    A silent symphony
    A hollow opus #1,2,3
Sometimes the sky is piano black
    Piano black over cleansing waters
    Resting pipes, verse of bore
    Rusting keys without a door
Sometimes the within is piano black
    Piano black over cleansing waters
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
I see a slow, simple youngster by a busy street,
with a begging bowl in his shaking hand.
Trying to smile but hurting infinitely. Nobody notices.
    I do, but walk by.
An old man gets naked and kisses a model-doll in his attic
    It's half-light and he's in tears.
When he finally comes his eyes are cascading.
I see a beaten dog in a pungent alley. He tries to bite me.
All pride has left his wild eyes.
I wish I had my leg to spare.
A mother visits her son, smiles to him through the bars.
    She's never loved him more.
An obese girl enters an elevator with me.
All dressed up fancy, a green butterfly on her neck.
    Terribly sweeet perfume deafens me.
    She's going to dinner alone.
That makes her even more beautiful.
    I see a model's face on a brick wall.
A statue of porcelain perfection beside a violent city kill.
    A city that worships flesh.
The 1st thing I ever heard was a wandering
    man telling his story
It was you, the grass under my bare feet
The campfire in the dead of night
The heavenly black of sky and sea
    It was us
Roaming the rainy roads, combing the guilded beaches
Waking up to a new gallery of wonders every morn
Bathing in places no-one's seen before
    Shipwrecked on some matt-painted island
Clad in nothing but the surf - beauty's finest robe
Beyond all mortality we are, swinging in the breath of nature
In early air of the dawn of life
A sight to silence the heavens
I want to travel where life travels,
    following its permanent lead
Where the air tastes like snow music
Where grass smells like fresh-born Eden
I would pass no man, no stranger, no tragedy or rapture
I would bathe in a world of sensation
    Love, goodness and simplicity
(While violated and imprisoned by technology)
The thought of my family's graves was the only moment
I used to experience true love
    That love remains infinite,
as I'll never be the man my father is
How can you "just be yourself"
when you don't know who you are?
Stop saying "I know how you feel"
How could anyone know how another feels?
Who am I to judge a priest, beggar,
    whore, politician, wrongdoer?
I am, you are, all of them already
Dear child, stop working, go play
    Forget every rule
There's no fear in a dream
Is there a village inside this snowflake?
    a child asked me
What's the colour of our lullaby?
I've never been so close to truth as then
    I touched its silver lining
Death is the winner in any war
Nothing noble in dying for your religion
    For your country
    For ideology, for faith
    For another man, yes
    Paper is dead without words
    Ink idle without a poem
All the world dead without stories
    Without love and disarming beauty
    Careless realism costs souls
    Ever seen the Lord smile?
All the care for the world made Beautiful a sad man?
Why do we still carry a device of torture around our necks?
Oh, how rotten your pre-apocalypse is
All you bible-black fools living over nightmare ground
I see all those empty cradles and wonder
    If man will never change
I, too, wish to be a decent manboy but all I am
    Is smoke and mirrors

@@StrateleStudios To my ears it sounds like they end on D anyway, but to refer to parallell major/minor in a poetic sense is a nice touch anyway. I always thought of those things, all the modes etc as purely musical concepts, but I guess you can kind of make it into a yin-yang kind of thing. Same same, but different, depending on where you start (where's your tonic today?)
So obvious now that I think about it.

One of my favorite things about your reactions is that you recognize that it all begins with the composition. From there, each virtuoso plays their layer at a level few can understand, let alone duplicate. To consider that Floor was still a "newbie" at this concert is mind-numbing. That she fit in so perfectly opened an entirely new pallet of musical colors for Tuomas to compose with, and the result has been precious to a level we have not seen, maybe for centuries. I love hearing your enthusiasm and recognition of what they're doing, Jeff. You let me re-live my first hearing with each reaction! Much appreciation!

There is a long poem from Tuomas, inspired by the Walt Whitman poem of this name, after the music to this song, not done in concert. This was a song written for Anette.

    This is your song.
If you ever have to explain the Groove in Metal to someone - play this tune.
Until the Breakdown hits you with a 10 ton hammer it is all fun and games.
But then the slow chugging monster with the machine gun riffing takes over.
And for every Metal Head this lights up the day.
Awesome….Imho one of the best songs ever.

Favorite song of the late Ann Waychoff, Mother of the Nightwish Army.
Inspired by the 52 chapter , 19th century poem of the same name by Walt Whitman. The studio version has a spoken poem section at the end, written by Tuomas in an ode to the original. The words to that are what is on the big screen behind the band. 'There forever remains the change from G to E m' is the last line .
Great reaction Jeff. Love that last part with the pyro accents. 'All that great heart lying still and slowly dying, All that great heart lying still on an angel wing' (x2) is the lyrics in that section.
The 2005 Helsinki show (End of an Era) is great for when you get to Tarja. Wishmaster is in that , as well as The Siren ,Phantom of the Opera (cover) , and the cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's High Hopes with marko on vocals.

Shoutout to our beloved Godmother of the Nightwish Army, Ann Waychoff, may she rest in peace. 🕯 Ann started the tradition of providing a little background information on the band to new reactors, a tradition Gabriel has so noblily and diligently continued. Ann did much to make sure that the Nightwish Army was a group of positive and encouraging fans who supported people as they started their Nightwish journey. She also did much to assist people privately as well. This song was her favorite.
The song is inspired by the Walt Whitman poem of the same name. In the studio version there is a spoken word section at the end of the song, a poem written by Tuomas inspired by Walt Whitman's original. During this live performance they don't include that part of the song but instead the lines from the poem are displayed on the main video screen behind the band. If you go back you can see them ( I missed them the first few times I watched the video because I was so entranced by the band members) as well as the last line from the poem that you caught.

It's also interesting because I've only been following nightwish for 2 years but this song is kind of rare they don't play it a lot live it seems like to me and this is like the only version I've ever seen live with floor singing it........ I just think this song has everything you would ever want in a song........ And you will realize something else soon which is the last three songs of this concert might very well be my favorite ending to any concert I've ever witnessed...... I wonder if anyone in this crowd that was at this concert realized exactly what they were witnessing and how much of an impact this one concert has had on so many people all over the world....

Along with all the comments from the Army, "the change from G to Em" is also the last spoken words in the movie Imaginaerum, the movie written by Tuomas and his close friend. The Imaginaerum album is from the Anette era. All of the band had parts in the movie. It is available on CZcams, Free movies with ads. It deals with dementia and is a well researched factual movie.

It is A Tribute to the poem in 52 chapters, One for every week of the year, " Song of myself " by Walt Whitman(one of the co-founders of US poetry) USA 1892 version. The 7th line of the song is ""Of mermaids, of Whitman's and the Ride""". The extended studio version of this song has, at the end, a poem as a tribute to Whitman made by Tuomas, the keyboard player and the mastermind of nightwish. Most of these lines you can also see fast flahing on the ledscreen of this video.
Bucle up, it goes very deep.

Normally the "G" (sol) scale is used for happy and joyful sounds. The Em scale (E minor) is used for sad and reflective sounds. So the change takes place from G to Em, from joy to sadness.
It is also a reference to the movie Imaginaerum, the main character is called Gem.

Great job as usual. This is originally an Anette song so you'll note that Floor was really scraping the bottom of her clean range (she growls lower) as it existed in 2013. She has since worked on her lower register and now sings lower than this comfortably.
Anette had a lower range than Floor so these songs were written to fit her more limited, lower range. Whenever we hear a really high note by Floor in a song written for Anette, we know that it's an embellishment that either Floor has added or she is replacing a soprano choir (e.g. "Storytime").
The original song had a long poem attached to it where it finishes with the phrase, "And there forever remains that change from G to Em." It's worth listening to the entire thing: czcams.com/video/ssRgOhr3Jtk/video.html This video is the same performance from Wacken that we have just watched with the poem lifted from the album version and appended, as it was done in the original with Anette.

You asked about the words "G to E-minor". Tuomas co-wrote a movie with Stobe Harju called "Imaginaerum". He scored the movie with Nightwish songs from the Imaginaerum album. The Wacken 2013 show is part of the Imaginaerum tour.
As for the movie, it's a pleasure to watch not only for the CGI at that time, but for the story and, of course, NW's music. The story is about a dying musician in a coma trying to recover his memories. His journey in the coma is led by a creepy snowman from his childhood. In the meantime, his estranged daughter has signed a DNR (Do Not Resusitate) order and has gone to his house. As she enters the house, she meets her father's fellow musician. The musician leads the daughter through a journey of memories about her father. We, the audience, are treated to a back and forth between the two story arcs. They are resolved at the end and we discover what "G to E-minor" meant. The movie can be watched free on Movie Central's CZcams link: czcams.com/video/VN3ViMxnVUE/video.html

After the last song of their concerts, they stay on stage, take a bow and enjoy the audience a minute. Tuomas comes out humble as can be..even though Nightwish is his baby!

Every Nightwish concert is like musical fireworks! Song after song, only music made and performed at a high level. It's a great feeling to be at their concert. "Eargasm"
Tuomas is a master composer and lyricist, but also a good pianist. I remember a song from their second album, where Tuomas plays the piano in the middle of the song, in the best 50's rock' roll style! It sounds like Little Richard came into the studio!
It's great how he is able to combine any genre of music with his compositions since the days of the old Masters of classical music.
Many have already explained the passage "And there forever remains that change from G to Em".
Tuomas' favorite poet is the American Walt Whitman. So at the end he wrote a poem done in the style of Whitman. It really does sound like it was written by Whitman!

Do listen to the studio version too. Anette has a very different voice, particularly when belting - Floor has a great rock belt, but Anette has this bright, forward laser-focused belt which is quite special. The first belt here, "a catnap in the ghost town of my heart", knocks me out on the album - I definitely prefer it to Floor's. As with many earlier era songs, though, Floor's endings are superior to the others'. She almost always adds an extra something in the final stretch, which leaves you speechless and sometimes makes you think "this is Floor's song now".
The studio version also has the poem at the end, read by the friends and family of Nightwish, and this is what is put on the screen, where you noticed the last line - it ties into the Imaginaerum movie, which is also worth a watch sometime (it reminds me of Mirrormask, if you've seen that).
    RIP Ann.

Hi. My number 2 NW song.
Marco superb (that rising 2nd entry my ringtone). Floor stunning. The band on top form.
And the best description of depression I know - "sometimes the within is piano black "
Not played on tour enough - GLS has been played 5 yikes as often!
All that remains is the change from G to Eminor.
Part of the story comes from the film named for the album Imaginaerum.
In it, the girl is called Gem - GEm - G to Em(inor).
You'll get a lot of context for the songs on the album by watching the (admittedly at times weird) film.
Buenos Aires 2018, even better IMHO, goes back to lots of the older songs (it was the Decades tour promoting the retrospective Decades album).
That concert has my Number 4 and 5 Nigjtwish songs (actually joint 4) - Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean and Dead Boy's Poem.

Notice how great Tuomas is in taking a small interlude or "throwaway" pre-chorus or "ever elusive D-part before doing the chorus again for the last time" and making a whole thing in itself out of that idea.
For him they're not throwaways...or breakdowns in the sense people think themas, he wants to give them time to be alive and be part of the whole.
If you listen to their songs again and try to notice this, you'll see the pattern.
And that's commendable from a composer to be able to appreciate the listener like "nope, this isn't some top of the head junk I'm throwing at you to have my ABBA-structure I thought this through and I'm going to take you to this journey with me!"

I do remember you mentioning during your first NW video (GLS) about listening to 'Wishmaster' (which I do love) but very mischievously I'd like to suggest that maybe do a double reaction to Wishmaster - the first from 'End of an Era' live show (which also has wonderful performances of Phantom of the Opera , and 'High Hopes' - Marko is sublime on lead vocals!) and secondly, there is a video called 'Wishmaster, misheard lyrics, which is hilarious - or maybe listen to by yourself if you didn't want to do that - I just thought you'd love it, being so familiar with the song. Those words readable on the screen: “And there forever remains that change from G to E minor.” Is the last strophe of Part 4 of the song (that part 4 which will never played live) only on studio album and in the movie “Imaginarium”. While they performed part 1 to 3 the lyrics of part 4 were displayed on the screen.
    Part 4. Love
    (6’53” - 13’30”)
I see a slow, simple youngster by a busy street, with a begging bowl in his shaking hand. Trying to smile but hurting infinitely
Nobody notices. I do, but walk by.
An old man gets naked and kisses a model-doll in his attic. It's half-light and he's in tears. When he finally comes his eyes are cascading.
I see a beaten dog in a pungent alley. He tries to bite me. All pride has left his wild drooling eyes. I wish I had my leg to spare.
A mother visits her son, smiles to him through the bars. She's never loved him more.
An obese girl enters an elevator with me. All dressed up fancy. A green butterfly on her neck. Terribly sweet perfume deafens me. She's going to dinner alone. That makes her even more beautiful.
    I see a model's face on a brick wall.
A statue of porcelain perfection beside a violent city kill. A city that worships flesh.
The first thing I ever heard, was a wandering man telling his story. It was you, the grass under my bare feet.
The campfire in the dead of the night.
The heavenly black of sky and sea.
It was us. Roaming the rainy roads
    Combing the gilded beaches.
Waking up to a new gallery of wonders every morn. Bathing in places no-one's seen before. Shipwrecked on some matt-painted island. Clad in nothing but the surf. Beauty's finest robe.
Beyond all mortality we are swinging in the breath of nature. In early air of the dawn of life. A sight to silence the heavens.
I want to travel where life travels. Following its permanent lead. Where the air tastes like snow music. Where grass smells like fresh-born Eden.
I would pass no man, no stranger, no tragedy or rapture. I would bathe in a world of sensation. Love, Goodness, and Simplicity. (While violated and imprisoned by technology) The thought of my family's graves was the only moment. I used to experience true love.
That love remains infinite. As I'll never be the man my father is. How can you "just be yourself" when you don't know who you are? Stop saying "I know how you feel". How could anyone know how another feels? Who am I to judge a priest, beggar, whore, politician, wrongdoer? I am, you are, all of them already. Dear child, stop working, go play, forget every rule. There's no fear in a dream. "Is there a village inside this snowflake?"
A child asked me: "What's the color of our lullaby?" I've never been so close to truth as then I touched its silver lining.
Death is the winner in any war. Nothing noble in dying for your religion, for your country, for ideology, for faith, for another man, yes.
Paper is dead without words. Ink idle without a poem. All the world dead without stories. Without love and disarming beauty. Careless realism costs souls
Ever seen the Lord smile? All the care for the world made beautiful a sad man?
Why do we still carry a device of torture around our necks? Oh, how rotten your pre-apocalypse is. All you bible-black fools living over nightmare ground. I see all those empty cradles and wonder. If man will ever change.
I, too, wish to be a decent manboy. But all I am, is smoke and mirrors. Still given everything, may I be deserving. And there forever remains that change from G to E minor.
    Songfacts®:
This epic thirteen and a half minute track is divided into four parts and was inspired by Nightwish keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen's favorite poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892), and his famous free verse poem of the same name. The song includes a six-minute recitation of the Transcendentalist poem. He explained to Metal Hammer magazine: "I wanted to pay homage to him and do the lyrics in a way that he would possibly write. It's a real, open, thorough, personal catharsis - especially the spoken-word part."

I think it was meant to mean, as it's the same but opposite sides of the note, like the coin has two sides, the human mind has the bright and positive against the dark, depressive and negative side of as well... all of us had those both... The album version is broken-up into movements and the final movement called 'Love' follows from where this version ends. I think of it as... I like a particular singer best performing some particular songs. By far I think I overwhelmingly like Floor best in almost everything she sings. There are a few songs I like that Tarja sings better or versions of songs that Tarja is singing, and a song or two of Anette era songs that Anette originally did with the band in studio. But the superior versatility of Floors vocals exceeds all expectations in studio and on stage... and she allows Tuomas the freedom to write and perform anything the Metal Mozart could possibly dream up. Case in point: their "Human | Nature" album... I couldn't imagine any more than two or three other vocalists on the planet taking on, much less pulling off that project with that level of success.

I see you noticed the screen stating "There forever remains that change from G to E minor". This song is inspired by the poem of the same name from Walt Whitman. There is a long spoken word ending to this song on the studio version. This is the poem inspired by Whitman. It ends with the words on the back screen.
IMHO - I think this is a musical metaphor for life. We begin in G (happy key) and as we progress through life we transition to e minor (a darker realization of life). It is all relative.
    What do you think Jeff?

Thanks for the great reaction as ever. After you have finished the Wacken performances, I think you would love the studio version of this. It's sung by Anette and has a long spoken part at the end.
