Welcome BACK to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This song was performed in Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland...
... Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Following the success of Beste Zangers show, Floor performed a series of solo concerts in the Netherlands in early 2020 with songs from her entire career (After Forever, Revamp, Northward, Nightwish, Beste Zangers) following that the last and the largest concert, at AFAS Amsterdam, to be professionally recorded and broadcast online, with the support of a crowdfunding campaign. After several rescheduling, due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the concert took place at the beginning of September 2021 in 3 consecutive days. Floor does not need autotune. Another reactor who is a sound engineer has checked for that and he concluded that there is no autotune or any other digital tricks used. What you hear, is what she produces 🙂
He's got a fantastic channel, it's great to see the genuinely great singers don't need autotune / pro tools. His software proves it beyond doubt, and shows up some very surprising results from other singers.....

The keyboard player is the genius behind most of the songs. He isn’t called the metal Mozart for nothing.
I never really got that nickname other than for the alliteration. They're more Wagnerian than Wagner ffs. He should be the Metal Wagner.

When it comes to technical ability as a vocalist, Floor is pretty much the gold standard. I love watching vocal coaches standing in awe of what she does. Floor with Nightwish is the perfect storm.

Yes, Floor's appearance is the most captivating one. Everyone wants to look at her. It's really special! ⛄💗👸
You, sir, are correct in saying there is no pitch correction happening with her. Her vocals have been run through digital analysis and it shows that it's a natural voice, with minor imperfections that are nearly, and often completely, undetectable to the human ear. Ever so slightly flat here, a tiny bit sharp there, but will sounds basically pitch perfect. She's put a LOT of work into her craft, and we get to enjoy the fruits of her labour. Even when she's ill, and really struggling, she manages to stay on key, which is more than some singers can say on their best day.

got distracted and joined a series of bands. However, Floor still gathers souls by her grace, beauty and the sheer power
of her vocals.

Marco is just an absolute diamond and there is no replacing him. I hope he is able to find peace and solitude in his life away from music. He’s an epic bass player but he’s just on another level as a singer. So versatile. He will be missed.

You're absolutely right. Floor has power, presence, personality and incredible versatility. She has the skill to switch between vocal styles within one sentence and even one word. From growls to full on classical, she can do it all.

As good as this performance is, seeing them LIVE is on an entirely different level. I was so fortunate to catch them on their North American tour recently. The camaraderie and talent was on full display. Top 5 highlight of my 60 years of existence hands down. Thank you sir for helping keep the memory alive.

Floor Jansen is a vocal athlete with incredible range, versatility, vocal stamina, and stage presence. She is a spinto soprano with a range of around four octaves. Floor joined her first band (After Forever) at the very young age of 16. She also attended the Rock Academie in the Netherlands and studied opera and musical theater after that. Floor has spent the better part of her life fine-tuning her instrument with help from several Master vocal coaches (She is also a certified Master vocal coach). Floor can sing in multiple languages, styles and genres. She often refers to herself as a vocal nerd. This Valkyrie goddess is a true gift to her craft and an incredible addition to Nightwish. I saw them in May in NYC and they were terrific. Ghost Love Score then and now has the same feel from 9 years ago, even though they gave a different drummer and a different bass player. Can't wait for the next US tour. You probably already know this but Floor is married to Sabaton drummer Hannes Van Dahl. They met on tour.
The pipes are based on The Sibelius (finnisch violist, composer) Monument, resembling organ pipes, is made of welded steel with over 600 pipes and with the bust of the composer on one side. The monument is one of Helsinki's (capital of Finland, homebase of nightwish) most popular statues and one of the most well-known tourist attractions.

To answer your question the bands composer/lyricist is the keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen, including the backing tracks. Fans call him the "metal Mozart". When he refers to himself in lyrics, he's "The Poet". Or "the dead boy" depending.

Tuomas Holopainen - the keyboard player - writes all music and lyrics. The orchestral backing tracks were arranged by Pip Williams and performed by the Looking Glass Orchestra, part of the London Symphony Orchestra.

Nightwish had 5 singers. On September 28th, 2012 a very pregnant Annette fell ill and was hospitalized. Rather than cancel the concert, Tuomas went to opening band Kamelot and asked their two backing vocalists if they would stand in for Annette and sing Nightwish's song. Elize Ryd and Alissa White-Gluz both said yes. With lyrics in hand, both ladies joined Nightwish on stage, and put on a kick ass show!!! We were there. So, for one night, Elize & Alissa were Nightwish singers.

Yes. This was shortly before Anette and Nightwish went separate ways. Then they called Floor… and the rest is history - you need to watch the documentary „Please learn the setllist in 48 hours“.
Floor is probably the best fit for Nightwish now. Tarja sang the songs in a very operatic style, then Annette was more pop and struggled to perform Tarja's songs and now Floor sings everything written for them plus she has given Tuomas chance to stretch his compositions and her vocals. I believe the tenth album is on it's way. And of course Floor has released one single "Fire" and a second coming out on Friday called "Storm". Can't wait.

The Valkyrie magic leads to inescapable adoration for Floor, which draws her devotees into the whole Nightwish journey from Tarja, through Anette to Floor herself. Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish)
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot.
Marko Hietala "The Viking" is a Finnish heavy metal vocalist, bassist and songwriter (sadly not part of the band now, but there is hope, that he will come back).
Internationally, best known as the former bassist, male vocalist and secondary composer to Tuomas Holopainen, of the symphonic metal band Nightwish. He was also the vocalist and bassist as well as composer and lyricist for the heavy metal band Tarot. He was also a member of the super-group Northern Kings, and portrayed one of the main characters in Ayreon's 2013 album The Theory of Everything.
Emppu Vuorinen the Electric Hobbit and trickster (Finnish guitarist, most famous for being a founding member of Nightwish and occasional songwriter).
Vuorinen is primarily a rhythm player, often supporting the keyboard or orchestral parts of Nightwish songs. However, he plays lead melodies and solos as well. Vuorinen's solo techniques usually include alternate picking, tapping, sliding, legato, and minor to extreme whammy bar use; he also employs sweep picking, although very rarely. Jukka "The Pirate" Nevalainen is the former drummer in the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish (left for health reasons, but is still a member behind the scenes).
He Is famous among Nightwish fans for wearing a bandana on his head, even during shows, his energetic drumming style, and for his spinning of his drumsticks. Joined Nightwish at the age of 17.

Only few other bands have done this before Nightwish. But they are gold standard for symphonic Metal.
I love this review because you are already familiar with Floor but not the band. Floor usually (and rightfully) steals the show, So you focusing on the other members is AWESOME! They are all very talented. Toumas is the keyboardist and wrote like 90% of the music.
Marco is the bassist and he is supertalented. I would recommend to try "Phantom of the Opera" from the End of the Era concert. It features their original singer, Tarja, who is awesome in her own right, though not the vocal beast like Floor, but without her there would not be Floor. but the best part of this suggestion that it shows Marco off in the best possible way.
It’s my favorite song sung by Marco. Closely followed with the Islander and while your lips are still red. He’s so powerful and versatile of a singer.
Tuomas Holopainen is perhaps THE artistic composer / arranger / lyricist of our time. His is the guiding hand behind the performances of Nightwish. Nightwish does not merely play songs. They present you with artistic masterpieces and without explanation. Tuomas has said that it's up to you to figure it out. The beauty of Tuomas' genius is that it is unconstrained. He goes where his muse and his soul leads him. This leaves some behind, but that is to be expected. The entire album of Human :||: Nature for example - both CDs - is a masterpiece, and Tuomas stands easily in the company of modern composers like Sibelius and Nielsen, Ralph Vaughn Williams and Karl Orff, Hans Zimmer and Thomas Bergersen. The second CD of Human :||: Nature in particular is breathtaking and at times exquisitely, heartbreakingly beautiful.

This iteration of the band was probably performance wise the best. Floor had been fronting bands since her teens and was now comfortable with the band and so could augment that and so could the others play off of her. The thing about Floor that most people miss is she is very good at focus control. Because she can dominate the stage when she chooses she is very good at letting that focus shift when she wants to. Much like her singing she allows her performance to highlight the music while controlling it.
But something has to be said about the crew also. They absolutely mesh with the band as well.
The emotion in her voice gets me!! What a performance!!! All the twists and turns take you on a journey!!

Glad you enjoyed Nightwish! I had the pleasure of seeing them play this live recently, along with Greatest Show on Earth which is even longer. Sadly the drummer (Jukka) and bassist (Marco) you see at Wacken are no longer in the band but they still sounded fantastic. Floor's stage presence is unbelievable.

Early 2020, I heard Floor sing live a mere 5 or 6 feet away from me. I can 100% confirm, this is the real deal. Nothing artificial about it.

Of course Floor has the gift/curse of being a HSP, which makes it easy for her to put extra emotions in her voice
while singing a composition like "The poet and the pendulum".
Floor worked very hard to get where she is now, and she reached that point only with her education as a singer. ;-) if you know what I mean.
It is sad but it’s the world we live it. With the advent of digital recording the mediocre can sound breathtaking. That’s why it’s surprising when someone comes along who has “done the work”. 😊

You have taken the first step into a deep rabbit hole, so buckle up and enjoy the ride.
First, I would like to make you aware of changes in the band since Floor took the stage with Nightwish in 2012.
This is still during the same Imaginaerum World Tour Floor stepped into and it was at the Wacken Open Air Music Festival in Germany on August 3, 2013.
In 2014, drummer Jukka was forced to step away from his duties due to health issues tied to insomnia he had been fighting with for quite some time.
The decision came while away with Nightwish during the presentation of the demo for their next album, Endless Forms Most Beautiful.
He called his good friend and WinterSun drummer, Kai Hahto, to record the tracks for the album.
Jukka made his decision public in 2015 on the same year of the release of the album.
Kai Hahto was made a permanent member in 2019.
Bass/Vocals - Marko Hietala resigned from Nightwish on January 12, 2021 expressing displeasure with the music industry, a lack of validation, and chronic depression.
His departure was not stated to be permanent, however, we've yet to hear if he's even going to return at all. Nothing has been said by Tuomas, but the fans do state their share of opinions of what's going to happen, so don't let that mislead you, Tuomas is most concerned about making this current World Tour a success and nothing more.
The bass player currently on tour with them is Jukka from WinterSun (I'm sure Kai had some persuasion in that). lol
They are about to finish their North American leg of the tour and moving on to South America.

Great reaction! I know why you say Jukka(drummer) looks like he's riding a Harley... As we have a low rider Jukka sits very low to his kit. Go back and look at the angle his legs are sitting. That was one of the first things I noticed. I've been around bands my whole life. My husband is a bassist. And our family run lights and sound at shows here in our city. My husband and son just did some work at The WHO show here a few weeks ago. Drummers normally sit much higher than Jukka. Anyway, I love your reactions so far. I just found you and watched 4 so far. I would recommend you watch Floor doing Phantom of the Opera on the Dutch TV show Beste Zangers. She performs with one of her idols Henk Poort. He played the phantom in the Dutch version of the show. This will show your Floors real vocal range.
