Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

I love to watch people just beginning their Nightwish journey. It's like discovering them all over again. I have liked and subscribed. You have so much ahead of you. A composer and keyboardist who is often called "The Metal Mozart", three great singers, amazingly talented instrumentalists and, most importantly, a group of extremely dedicated performers who always work together for the good of the song. No showboating in this group, just everyone working together, and enjoying the work.

I remember the first time I heard this song. I was immediately hooked with the time signature changes and key changes even before the vocals started. Once Floor did the first verse I was in awe. Also, I was so angry that the US music industry keeps amazing bands like this from being more well known. They are so versatile in their music while at same time you always know a Nightwish song when you hear it. Just sit back and enjoy the ride! 🤘
I'm not sure that is wholly the case any more than it is in the UK. The main problem with Nightwish it that their songs are so long and they know that themselves. It's still three minutes max if you want to hit the airwaves. Then comes the question 'how do you classify them?' There are few 'metal' radio stations and in any case they aren't really 'metal' anyway, it's more complex than that. And then, how much do they want it anyway? My understanding is that Tuomas Holopainen isn't keen to pursue non-metal fans. They certainly don't employ radio pluggers to the best of my knowledge and if you don't do that these days the chances of ending up being played there are zero.
The choral chant at the end says:
"My fall will be for you
My love will be in you
You were the one to cut me
So I'll bleed forever"
I lost a woman I love 50 years ago and this song brings me tears at 72 years old.

"Write a lyric for the song only you can understand" (Elàn - Nightwish) can pretty much sum up a lot of Tuomas lyrics ;)
The general concept can be clear (and I mean, here it's stated in the title: it's a score about a "Ghost Love"), but then for the actual interpretation you need to dig a lot more, to get used to Tuomas imaginary (the Child, the Beast, the Siren, the Ocean, the Childhood/Innocence, etc) and put there in context (listening more of their stuff, especially starting from their older songs can help building such "vocabulary"), and even then, some things will remain up for everyone to interpret them as they wish :)

@@andyjohnson6161 That's the main reason why I mentioned that "most" of the band was from Finland. Didn't mean to offend by not specifically naming him. Especially since I have met him on two occasions. A very jovial and talented fellow. In my haste, I erroneously grouped the Netherlands in with the Nordic states when their neighbor, Denmark is Nordic and not the Netherlands. I knew the UK was not Nordic though.

This was me a few months ago when I stumbled onto Nightwish by pure accident here on CZcams. Not really a metal/rock guy, probably not for the last 20 years anyways, but this band -every member of this band, has opened a door to a vast universe of music I didn't know I was missing.
Nightwish music is filled with world class poetry, wonder and fantasy, and an overall yearning to recapture the lost innocence of youth. Welcome to the amazing soundscape of musical storytelling and imagination of the genius a the wheel for Nightwish, Tuomas Holopainen (keys). BTW, that was the Dutch Queen of symphonic metal Floor Jansen. She will grab you by the heart and squeeze it as she touches your soul with her magical vocal techniques and stage charisma. So much more to experience Nick. Nightwish has songs from extreme dark metal to Celtic folk metal and everything in between.
One of the few metal bands you could describe with the word beautiful. Melodies and poetic lyrics to warm your heart and spark your imagination.

The great Floor Jansen... Hallowed be her name. Symphonic Goddess. Yuss! I knew someone would recommend Nightwish. You should watch her duet with Henk Poort doing Phantom of the Opera. My favourite version is the one they perform on Beste Zangers 2019. And that's because you don't get the background noise from the audience and you can clearly hear the whole performance. She is a stunning vocalist. She has a very commanding presence.
I discovered Nightwish in early 2019....I heard this epic song....and wondered where in the world have I been? I have been into the heavier side of rock music since the mid 1960's...when I was a young boy! I can listen to Nightwish no matter what I am feeling like, and they cheer me up!
I see Gabe has been here, and he has a great lineup of Nightwish songs....heck...I followed his suggestions for about 2 months just devouring every song on his list!

Nice reaction. You just saw Floor Jansen Killing it in the 13th song of the set list of this legendary Wacken Open Air concert 2013. On that 3rd of August everything in the universe aligned and it resulted in one of the best concerts ever recorded. I know it sounds pretentious, but go check it out and you'll see I am right. Nightwish makes symphonic metal and this song is a great example of that, it's very melodic but they also have way heavier and more chunky riffed metal songs. Floor does it all from full operatic to death growls and the bass player can sing also. For a different taste of Nightwish, check out Romanticide from this same concert. Enjoy your explorer journey into their catalogue, we'll be right there with you

I love watching the whole band having the time of their life. A year before that day they all were in a crisis. Nightwish was having difficulties with their singer Anette in the middle of a World tour, with a lot of pressure and stress. Singer Floor Jansen (Founder and singer of Revamp) was at home for a long time, feeling miserable, recovering from a serious burn-out. Two months later, when Anette left the band, Tuomas called Floor if she could fill in for the rest of the tour. She got on a plane to the United States and learned the setlist of songs in just 48 hours. The rest is history.
I've known and admired the talent of Floor Jansen since I heard her sing with her first band After Forever in Almere (Netherlands) on may 5th 2004. It's the combination of talent, total dedication to music and performing, also the hunger to learn as much as she can about singing, why she has become such a freaking good and versatile singer. Floor introduced me to Nightwish and the genius Tuomas Halopainen. They're just all so talented and you can see, hear, feel how much they love to share their music.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.1) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites:

Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples:

Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. I came to Nightwish at the start of the Pandemic very early 2020. I'm nearly 70 years old and I now play there music whenever I can. My recommendation to you would be Shoemaker, Live at Hellfest 2022. Stunning. Great reaction by the way, I'm a new subscriber.

Your instincts and feel about the Nordic vibes was correct. The band is Finnish, singer Floor is Dutch and multi-instrumentalist Troy is British. Tuomas (keys, composer, lyricist) uses folk things many times in his songs and this was no different (after interlude, when the band came back). Nightwish is very versatile, so there are all kinds of surprises waiting for you. This was epic fantasy movie score. They have an unmistakable Nightwish sound but stylistically they go all over the place.

Welcome to your Nightwish journey. This is the best band in the world(my opinion ), and Floor is the best vocalist/singer in the world. Nice Floorgasm dude! One of the most incredible and technically master of her instrument, this performance, #13 of 15 on the set list demonstrates her versatility of vocal styles. I don't consider myself a Nightwish fan like the majority of the folks you'll find here.
