The McCalls 6972 is a very similar shirt and if anyone is having troubles getting this shirt sewn there are sewalongs for that one.
I found your video helpful Delilah but would have loved more sew along on what you were finding difficult because I had the same troubles
i disliked this pattern, I will go with your suggestion on the 6972
THANK YOU!!!
This collar!!!
I struggled most of yesterday with simplicity 1043! Ugh!
My first sewing project was supposed to be easy! And wearable!!😂😂😂
Next time!! Many Thanks to you!!
This is the worse pattern ever, don’t judge yourself based on this pattern…
You did a great job! I understand your aggravation. I've been there struggling on the same things. Your dad looks great in the shirt. I know you will find a great pattern and will be making men's shirts. I want to make matching flannel shirts for me and my man for winter. Thanks for showing your nice things again.🤗
Thank you so much! a flannel shirt would be so nice for the upcoming cozy season!
Great job sewing a very hard thing! I love the fabric and the shirt looked really nice on your dad, despite the things you see as flaws. My favorite shirt pattern is Butterick B6841. I've made it for my husband and it has the back yoke that you like as well as a collar with a stand. It fits beautifully and I really like the cut of the hem. Bonus, it's a mens and womens pattern in one envelope so you can make yourself a shirt too.
thank you for the suggestion! i'm going to look that one up.
Camp shirts are a more casual style. My brother loves that style so I made him one last month. I bought the pattern on Etsy from an indie designer and thankfully didn’t have any issues. I hope you find a pattern you love! Congrats on sticking with it and figuring it out! The shirt turned out great!
I think an indie pattern would be much better! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this. You have So much patience! I love how the shirt turned out & think it looks very nice on your dad. Maybe he can wear it unbuttoned if it feels a little tight.
thank you!
Hello. I learned to sew in 7th and 8th grade which was a few decades ago. I recently decided that I would like to get back into it after all of these years. I picked up S9157 thinking it might be my speed. I think your video has convinced me to keep looking for a different pattern-- something that won't frustrate me and make me quit. Early success is key, I think. So anyway, thank you!
Yes...Do Not get tthis pattern, many people have had a hard time with it.
Thank you for reviewing this pattern. I was looking for a pattern like this specifically because it does not have a collar stand. I'm making a guayabera (cuban/caribbean summer shirt) and a major feature is the lack of a collar stand. Great job explaining and demonstrating your difficulties. Looking forward to giving it a try.
Glad it was helpful! hope you have a better experience with it than I did!
LOL, thanks for this video. I made 3 shortsleeve shirts several months ago, but my man wanted long sleeves. Didn't want to draft the sleeves, so got this, to save time. Usually takes me a week to do a shirt, between work & a bit of laziness. Been working on this one for 3 weeks! Finally finished up by ignoring instruction.
A little sad, One used to be able to count on Simplicity because they were - simple.
I love the McCalls 6044, it's my go to button up. But word to the wise, it's a bit big in the stomach area. My husband likes it but I always take in the sides by almost an inch on each side.
Funny enough I am working on my second Wardrobe by Me Tropical Shirt (has a camp collar like yours) and it gave me SO much trouble too. Unfortunately I serged the edge without checking, so I will be unpicking stitches for days to restitch! I have made the pattern before correctly though and it turned out really cute. I still really like yours despite the trouble, so thanks for the review!
Isn’t it funny how difficult it can be! But we love the challenge!
It is beautiful! I bought a Butterick boys pattern and it is the same collar… I put it in my ufo pile… thanks to you I might pull it out and attempt to finish it!
yes just finish it and see what you get!
Kudos for persevering and figuring out how to complete the shirt. 😊 several months ago I was using a boy’s shirt pattern from one of my favorite pattern designers. I just could not get the collar to fit. Way too short. Cut another collar. Short again. Compared traced pattern pieces to original. Same. Searched blogs and errata. Nothing. Gave up and selected a different pattern. First time in 55 years of sewing that I’ve given up on a pattern.
If the fabric was not so expensive I would have just set it aside and started over on something else!
@@SimplyDelilah I hear you! I had searched high and low for the fabric for just the contrast collar. It was his favorite Pokémon that I fussy cut. I’m going to try to incorporate it in to another pattern. 🤞
I am working on this shirt right now!
Omg thank you so much for this I was so confused by the collar
youre welcome, not a good pattern!
Thanks Delilah for Beautiful shirt you made, Awesome job ,we're so proud of you 👏 also in the next 2 weeks will fit perfect, we Love you ❤️ Mom and Dad
Yay! Thank you! so you are putting pressure on him to lose weight? hahaha.
This pattern made me angry. Collars are hard enough without mistakes in the pattern itself. Thanks for the video. It showed me it wasn't me who had it wrong!
oh yes...I was so very angry with this one too!
Yikes! I've have that pattern and was planning on making my grandson some shirts for school. Thanks for the warning. I picked it because it was a camp shirt thinking it would be easier and more casual than a shirt with a collar stand. Your shirt looks great so your persistence paid off. I love the fabric and it suits your dad. I'm sure he loved that you made it for him. Don't give up on shirts. Find a pattern you like.
If your grandson in a kid then you can make the bayfield by little lizard king…it is so easy and I’ve had good results…they just don’t have it in men sizes
the Helen's Closet Cameron shirt has really good instructions that hold your hand the whole way. it has a collar stand and it's unisex so you could make a shirt for yourself too, if you wanted.
I think I will give that a try as I really want to make another one. thank you!
Love this explanation. Thanks so much.
you're welcome, thank you for watching!
hi Delilah, love the fabric print and the shirt for your dad. Keep trying, you will get it. Try a different pattern. You can do it. Thanks for sharing.
thanks for the encouragement. I think i will try another one!
Maybe it's the instructions but ther Helen's closet button, the wardrobe by me tropical shirt, mcalls m6972 have a camp collar and their instructions should be better........especially Helen's closet.....but I am glad to see that you went through with it and didn't just completely give up
thank you. I will have to check out that pattern!
glad you were able to figure out.
thank you!
The mccalls shirt pattern is my go to, super easy and turns out perfect every time! It does run big though
thank you for saying that! i definitely wanted to try another pattern
High recommendation for the Tropical Shirt by Wardrobe by Me. Or the mens version, I love the womens version, can’t recall the name, and that camp collar was completely painless. I can imagine expecting a collar stand and not getting it, and doing a different shirt can be disorienting. For my husband, he’s got a bit of a belly, so i grade out starting under the armscye. And it’s McCalls 6044 every time. I do plan on making him a camp collar shirt, as he never buttons his top button anyway (I don’t cut the buttonhole open up there 😂) and will be using maybe Simplicity 4760? And/or getting the Wardrobe by Me shirt for men. Worth taping together. ETA I have 2 other mens camp collar type shirts Simplicity 1544 and McCalls 4044. Might even favor the latter, since it says it’s easy. ❤️
YES others have reccommended the tropical shirt. thanks for all the suggestions.
Thanks for the review! I find it difficult to sew for others when they aren’t around to fit during the process. I’m sure he appreciates all your labor and thoughtfulness. Also what pattern is the t-shirt you’re wearing? I like the fabric and the v-neck. Some v-neck patterns just go too low. Do you have a review on this?
yes it would have been more convenient if he was around to keep measuring him... and with my t shirt I'm wearing 2 different ones...but neither one is a v-neck.. but they are both made with knit fabric..they are ellie and mac pdf patterns...
The shirt looks very good! You had inspired me to sew a shirt for my dad! What is your favorite shirt pattern so far?... I love your channel and I'm always looking forward for your videos!💗💗💗🙌
thank you..I'm going to give the Helens Closet shirt pattern a try that others have suggested...hopefully i will have better luck.
Anyone struggling with this pattern, don't beat yourself up! There is actually an error in the collar markings -the small dots are not wide enough to reach the shoulder seams - the part that you have to cut an inset in order to later fold and sew down by hand needs to be much wider than indicated. Rest of the shirt turned out nice.
Yes I hated this pattern!
I'm still pretty novice seamstress and am stuck on how to close off the front facing so you cant see the interfacing anymore. Does that not get closed off? Does sewing the button holes on keep the flap from opening?
You are suppose to sew it down where the button holes are. What helps me is also just pulling out a shirt from my husbands closet (that was purchased from the store) to see how the finished shirt looks. ...but honestly I have been sewing for years and years and found this to be challenging..
Well done.
thank you!
I like the shirt. My son ask me to make one for him, I made it with grey black batik xxxl and he never wore it.
yeah thats why I haven't made one for my husband, he is picky, i don't think he would ever wear it.
Thanks for your review. You referred to Pins and Needles channel for the camp shirt collar. Perhaps you meant "Lifting Pins and Needles"?
Yes! Thank you!
My my that collar has a lot of detail not alone how it did not match up. You did a wonderful job though. Looks mice
thank you!
That is a pretty shirt! You did good! I still have not finished my husbands shirt, but will get the courage here soon. Thank you!
You got this!
I have the simplicity 4760 mens pattern and was trying to figure out that collar situation too...i like the pattern in itself but that collar and its a doozy!
oh it made me so mad and frustrated!
So frustrated with this. Why do all the videos I’ve been watching have the facing already attached before the collar and the pattern doesn’t say to do it that way? What am I missing?
Seriously this was the worst pattern! It’s not you at all! I think there was an error with the pattern
It was awful! So unclear so disjointed. Trying to teach my daughter to sew garments and this was supposed to be a fun a surprise for her new husband as they live and work on Hawaii. Holy cow, took 3 days of frustration and watching videos and in chats and friends taking photos of shirts, not to mention breaks, a couple brawls, and a little spice to our coffee, lol to finally get it done. Took lots of notes, rewrote what I’d do differently, tweaked the pattern pieces, and will never have to look at those directions again!
Omg I’m sitting here feeling defeated too. I’m a beginner sewer but already made a couple of things with not many issues. I’ve spent 2 days sewing and unpicking this stupid collar and button whole attachments. I’ve sewed it as per instructions and the diagram fits what I’ve sewed but it still isn’t right! So frustrating.
YEAH ITS not you...the instructions are horrible...everyone has had problems with it.
So annoying that the pattern small dots on the collar are in the wrong place! I wish I’d watched this before starting the collar portion. At first I thought I’d cut out the wrong size collar or marked it wrong, but nope! 😩
yes I know what you mean, they make you feel like its your fault!
As a perfectionist we tend to be hard on ourselves…I chalk it up and learn from my mistakes…
yes...I definitely learned a lot! just wish it was learned on cheaper fabric!
I didn’t like this pattern either lol
never again!
