- Join me as I travel from New York to Italy for the 2023 Imola GP, which was subsequently cancelled due to the severe flooding in the Emilia-Romagna region. The cancellation of 2023 Imola GP created chaos for all F1 people and left me and my son stranded in Milan as the floodwaters caused massive disruptions to lives and transport in the region. Shame race was cancelled but defo right decision.
Kym you mentioned about the ash tray in the airplane toilet. I believe planes are still fitted with ash trays so that if someone was to sneak to the toilet to smoke they would likely dispose of the cigarette in the ash tray rather than the waste bin (which could cause a fire) or down the toilet (which could damage the plumbing)
Yeah that’s what I was thinking.
^ This is correct and the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) list of “minimum equipment” for aircraft, an ashtray in the plane toilet is still a legal requirement

Hi there Kym...great channel thank you.....Just a quick 1, I am a pilot on Boeing 747-8's and you mentioned the "ASH TRAY" on that 777. Reason is that even though no smoking is aloud they still put ash trays in the toilet's now days because there are still people that bend the rules and smoke there so the manufacturers place them there hoping that if they do they will use the ash tray and not dispose of there butts into the trash can as to prevent a fire breaking out even though there are still extinguishers in the trash cans. Sounds strange but true....Enjoy Monaco mate.

We flew from Singapore and were at the tail end of our Europe trip - which was planned with the Imola race as the final stop - when we learned that the race was cancelled. We couldn't cancel our Airbnb in Bologna anymore and rebooking our flights was ridiculously expensive, so we just improvised our supposed race weekend plans. We ended up going around Bologna, to Firenze and finally to the Ferrari museum in Maranello.
Shame the race was cancelled but absolutely the right decision. I hope those affected by the flooding will recover soon 🙏

I was in Milan from last Wed to Saturday and it was filled with tourists. The hotel prices were through the roof! It didn't feel like the neighbouring region had a flood!
My heart goes out to those affected by the flood.
What a life Kym! And now getting to share it with your son. I know we only see the glamorous parts, but overall I'm sure it beats many, many other professions.

Last year I arrived into Milan w/ Emirates Business from Dubai on a A380. Jetway to the Novotel Malpensa and including picking up oversize baggage (bike), rental - car 50min! Very impressed.
Go up to Lake Como if you can. Close and spectacular.
Funny thing to know. A Margarita made with Grand Marnier is called a Cadillac Margarita. It’s usually done as a floater but mixed is still great!

Was 7 hours into my journey from the UK when got told it was cancelled. Was gutted, but glad it was cancelled for safety of all involved.

We came through Bologna from Venice to Rome just before you and were lucky to make it.. Extremely wet with so many issues in the region

Definitely no way the race could have happened, but I can think of many worse places to be stranded than Milan. Wonder how the pizza compares to the NYC version?

Kym the reason for the ashtrays on the planes is that there are still people that secrectly try to smoke and it's safer that they have a place to put the cigarette out. You certanly get better pizza in Milan than in New York :-) . You could go and visit Lake Como, only a 30min train ride from Milan.
Just heartbreaking to hear about the flooding. We’ve been watching from afar(here in the USA)and have kept them in our prayers. Sorry you all are kind of in a bit of jam along the way. Hopefully Monaco will be a “go,” but it’s looking doubtful. Hang in there Kym!🙏🏻📸🏁

Tragic circumstances and completely understandable decisions around the race. We arrived Milan on Thurs AM and were able to make our way downtown to connect to Venice no problems. Went from veniice to Modena on Sat no problems as well. Did Ferrari museums past 2 days. Plus a enthralling factory tour where we saw the f1 cars being prepped for Monaco.
Right decision to cancel the race. Prayers for the affected people of the Emilia-Romagna region.

I had a mate from Melbourne fly to Belgium via the USA (where he saw an air race) for the 1985 F1 race in June. Except that they had laid some special material that would give more grip in the wet but the weather was warm/hot and the Turbo cars ripped up the track on the Friday. The race was delayed until September that year. A long way to go for not very much track action.
It's called a Cadillac margarita when they substitute traditional orange liquers (cointreau, triple-sec, curacao) with Grand Marnier (orangey cognac). They're generally more expensive (because they're better).
Hi Kym. Last year you did the feat of visiting many symbols of Rome in 24 hours. I was in Rome 15 days ago and I tried to match up and to surpass what you did...sorry I didn't make it. I missed the last 2 places to visit and my guide was already too tired. In 2 years I will return to Rome and try again. As usual huuuuuge hugs from Colombia.
That was a great vlog on crossing the Atlantic - it's always interesting to see how others travel, especially when plans go wrong! I was intrigued about the bathroom on the plane as I have never seen one on a plane before, but where was the bath?
While I was disappointed about the cancellation of the race I was more concerned about those directly affected by the flooding - that's a situation I would hate to be in and I can't imagine what the people there had to go through.

The reason for the ash tray is because in case people smoke on the plane, the CA still have place to dispose cigarettes…

Terrible flooding in Imola. Really feel for the people there. Always wondered how you get your 600 plus your other kit on the more local flights without checking your bags. Shame you didn't get a chance to go to the N24
if a Reuben sandwich is on the menu, ill get it every time.
I found the BA seat in bed mode to be not great as well. There is like a weird ridge halfway down that really digs into you. I found i could just about get it to go away if i raised the sest just slightly so your head is elevated. I did have swordfish steak on my flight tho for the main meal. Delicious.
Nice video. Also the ash trays are to ensure that even if someone does light a cigarette they don’t throw it in the trash and start a fire.

The ashtray is on the MEL (minimum equipment list) in case some one smokes in the lavatory. Should this item be missing from the aircraft prior to departure, the aircraft can not legally take off.
Common misconception but interestingly, not true.
Shame the race was cancelled, it was the right decision. I feel bad for all the locals that plan their business around the race and are now not going to get that boost they were expecting. 🙏
A lot worse places to be stuck for a week than Milan!

While smoking is not allowed on airplanes, the FAA requires planes to have a safe place to put a cigarette in case someone does in fact light one up. So they are an anachronism on todays plane but required.
Chaos for the peoples lives who have been ruined....
Besides the flood, this cancellation will have a huge economic impact to the Imola area.
This video was a bit confusing because the race has been cancelled for a week. It's like you didn't find the cancellation until you made it to Milan. Too bad you couldn't have diverted to your stay for Monaco from London or stayed there.
The race was cancelled on Wednesday, no? Kym would have been traveling on Wednesday to shoot photos at the Thursday press briefings.

I believe airplanes are required to have an ashtray, in case someone does light one up, the staff have somewhere to put it.
In the past people smoked on the plane so could just be because of older plane.

BA banned smoking in 1990... So safe to say it not because it's an old plane. Andrew is almost certainly having the correct idea here.
Edit to add.. the 777 came into service in 1995.
Saw some pictures of the flood from and it looks pretty bad my heart goes out to those affected by the flood and it was a right call fron F1 and the organizers to completely can the event

Don't ever fly into Washington DC Dulles Airport from outside of US!!! It took me 2 HOURS to go through the Customs yesterday afternoon. Standing up for two hours with pissed off passengers and bunch of little kids and Babies crying all at the same time. Some other people I know had the same experience so it is not a one day thing. TSA, get your act together and schedule necessary number of officers! You have no right to torture thousands of passengers.
