The bassist for Jefferson Starship was Paul Kantner, my cousin. RIP Paul! I think this song came out around the same year my mom passed away, in 1978, so listening to this song brings back sad feelings for me. I was wrong, the song came out in 1975, but I guess the first time I ever heard was in 1978, still it brings back those sad memories.

Jefferson Airplane was Marty Balin's band which he started with Paul Kantner, he lost control of it when other members wanted to get more psychedelic and political. They didn't care for his romantic ballads but when Kantner formed Jefferson Starship those ballads were big hits. JS wanted more commercial success and Marty gave it to them, eventually becoming a full time member.
Kantner and Balin are both gone now and Slick is retired. I think Jorma Kaukonen (guitarist) and Jack Casady (bassist) are still working.

I was looking for reactions to the Indigo Girls and Sarah McLachlan, and there are only a few out there.
You could start with a song they did together in 1997 on the Lillith Fair tour, "The Water Is Wide". This is an old folk song(roots in the 1600s) covered in various forms over the years by many artists(Pete Seeger started the modern version), and the Indigo Girls version is very good(see the Club R&R live performance). I saw it live at the first Lillith Fair concert that the Indigo Girls were at, and performed it with Sarah (but not also Jewel). This is the performance on the DVD: czcams.com/video/d32rALuwRtQ/video.html
For an Indigo Girls song to start with, check out "Kid Fears" live from the Uptown Lounge with Michael Stipe from R.E.M.
For a Sarah McLachlan song you could do the popular "Angel"(czcams.com/video/l3ceD1O5vhQ/video.html) or "Sweet Surrender".

Some may note that Starship with a slightly different lineup in 1985, had a #1 Hot 100 hit with We Built This City (written by Bernie Taupin and another, sorry), that was later criticized by media as one of the worst songs ever!

A strong "relationship" connection for me - a lost Love! Probably not uncommon. I agree about the comments about Marty Balin's voice. This is all "Marty Balin" for me, more than Starship. Being both spiritual AND a romantic, I have always loved the verse about "I know that Love is the answer. It's holding the world together, ain't nothing better at all." If fact I stole the line "I feel like swirling and dancing whenever you're walking with me", when walking with my Love.

I love the interplay between Marty Balin and Grace Slick's voices. So White Rabbit was representative of their 60's sound (although you need to check out Somebody to Love, We Could Be Together, or Volunteers), Miracles is a good representation of their mellow 70's sound (another great love song is Have You Seen the Stars Tonight). When you get to their 80's sound, they go for a more commercial pop rock sound, but there are some good songs. I recommend Winds of Change or Stranger. Then stop there. Haha!

That's a good song from the 70''s. My grandmother alway told me that I was a mericall child because I was less then a year old when I had open heart surgery in 1963, I was the first child that age to service that surgery and I I have a newspaper from it for NIH. Every so often I am talked about in the Washington Post. I know that this song has a different meaning.

Remember the story of Jekyll and Goliath, I believe it was called? Well, Airplane and Starship are a bit like that. As are pre- and post- Stevie and Peter. There was an edge and then there was none. I exaggerate, but 'tis a morsel therein. This here is a fine and beautiful song and more emblematic of the shiny new Starship. Airplane was raw yet Graceful, Slick but not slippery. And psychedelic as funk. Haight-Ashbury. The movie "Flashback" has some great Airplane going on.

Dismissed by many as pop sellouts, certainly not the gravitas as Airplane. But a truly solid band of substance, one that, as I see in other comments, has a catalog worthy of attending them live while I had the opportunity. Something I never did. My loss.
