The sad part of this is, that could have been the last and or only signal a civilization sent out before it was destroyed. Which means we will never get that signal ever again, if that be the case.
I thought this too. Totally blows my mind.
Why is that the sad part? What if the sound we heard was not a distress signal, but another civilisation wiping out the very civilisation you say sent the distress call, but, it was not a distress call, but a signal back to their home world to let them know they destroyed their neighbour and the planet no longer exists? 😅 that’s strangely less traumatic to think about although worse in nature, and if true, means we might get to hear it again when they visit us 😅
but that would mean there is still an intelligent civilication out there ...if live still exist its a win
@@christianmarx3249 if there’s definitive proof of just one more; I’m almost certain that would instantly mean there’s millions or billions yet to be discovered. Same principle applies for AI theory apparently, the moment we create a simulation as real as life itself, that would instantly mean we ourselves live in a simulation.
Maybe it was a cannibalistic, barbaric, destroyer species who seen a giant asteroid coming to their planet and there was actually a message sent. Maybe it was there way of saying "oh shi-t", or telling their species that were out flying in ships to not come home, cause there wouldn't be one.
One of the things about extra-terrestrial signals that I find intriguing or maybe even a bit unnerving is the concept of a necro signal, where you receive a signal from a now dead civilization. In a way, Voyager 1 with the gold plaque, if found 100 million years from now, would be a necro signal. That thing will outlive us all.

@@yewstew8312I mean not to be too negative, but most likely we did do it for nothing, and we knew that when we sent it. If there is life in the universe it's very unlikely that something sent out in a random direction will come in contact with it.

Almost inevitably any contact will be with a long dead civilisation. I suspect that there is too great a distance for there to be any meaningful contact, unless wormholes in space actually exist.
being an introvert I'm just wondering if the alien is like me on a phone, made the call, got no answer, and thought "phew, no one's answering, maybe I'll try again later" and just never does. Back when we had land lines there was no way of knowing who called if they didn't leave a message so maybe we'll never know.
Caller ID existed and would tell you who was calling and *69 would return calls to whoever called you last. So yea, back when landlines were around you could know who called and even call them back automatically with a land line.
@@Vincent_Beers Uh…WHAT? 😂 Caller ID did not exist in 1977. Nor did *69. They were not a thing until the early 90s in all of North America. We had serious issues with hang up and silent callers from 1975 until 1980 and again from about 1986 until 1989. Even having a tracer put on our phone was a big process that could only be done by the phone company, and they couldn’t always tell what the number was that was calling if it was out of province. That required even more special tech that involved law enforcement.
Important to note is that we might not have heard the full signal, and we also didn't listen for a repeat continuously, only every now and then at seemingly arbitrary times. If it did repeat we might have missed it. Maybe the signal we picked up was the last of the repeats. Maybe they only sent one, which btw is what we humans do. We sent 1 signal into space that famous time. Not 2, not 3, but 1. Point is, there are too many questions and possibilities for us to say with certainty "this signal was it". Very frustrating.
#1 misconception about the "WOW! signal".... is that it was a signal. The scant bits we know about it suggest it was either using a modulation that cycled too subtly for it to be picked up by the admittedly crude instrument that detected it, or it was using NO modulation at all. If this is true, then it's almost certainly NOT artificial.
Thoughty talked up the idea that natural cosmic sources of signals are very stable... but he's WRONG. Novas make signal bursts and so do many other cosmic events. This is why most people DON'T see it as a sign aliens are calling us. It's the equivalent of hearing a loud BANG! noise a mile away. We don't know exactly what MADE the noise, but it's not a form of communication.... unless it's the equivalent of morse code via dynamite blasts.
Why would we send a signal one time then hear a signal come in then randomly wait and expect to hear more back? Usually if you want a conversation to take place you have to say more than One ☝️word! 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️😂

The disappointing part is that the wrong telescope picked it up.
Its a static telescope on a rotating earth. The reason they waited until the next day to listen again was because they had to wait for the earth, so the telescope would be pointing at the same point in space.
Conversely, if it were a telescope that tracked a point in space, it most likely never would have even heard the wow signal, there is a lot of directions it could be facing and the wow signal was just one.
Perhaps the signal was just a cue signal for the incoming information and we missed it by a few hours.
And now we could only imagine the mindblowing alien cat memes we missed. Truly a great loss for humankind as a whole.
Yeah but if it was from an intelligent civilization trying to make contact, they would repeat it, and the proceeding information, over and over again. It’s only logical.

@@debbieanne7962 It's possible that it was a signal meant for somebody else. The Earth just happened to be in the right place at the right time to pick it up. Sort of like catching a wave that was meant for a person behind you.
Imagine interstellar alien civilizations communicating across the cosmos. They're probably a lot more advanced than us, both scientifically and technologically. We happen to intercept one of their signals and we try to signal back. The aliens are like "Gee, this is embarrassing. We need to be more cautious when transmitting in that direction."

Sending replies to an unknown sauce (*source whoops silly me) is generally a tactical mistake. Thats like poking a bear to see if its friendly. i hear a buzzing. why dont i stick my head inside this hive? they might be friendly.
Just putting this out there. If we haven’t heard anything like it in the past 50 years, surely it could have been an accident, or a distress call from an alien spacecraft. Or even just a spacecraft flying over the right point in space.
My conclusion after pondering it for years... is that it was actually a cosmic event. the one thing Thoughty gets VERY wrong, is that cosmic events don't make bangs. It is true that most cosmic events don't do... that, but it is known that many cosmic events can be heard on radio telescopes.
In that case, we've never detected another 'cosmic event' like that. Nor is there even a theory what kind of cosmic event it could be.
Or it's so far away it takes hundreds of years to reach us. Maybe we'll find the second signal in 2430? Hope not though, I wanna be alive when this happens😂
@@dirremoire well, there's a lot we don't know about the universe. I've seen a few theories, but I don't remember enough details to explain them.
Imagine if the "aliens" had been broadcasting for hundreds of years and shut it down due to no replies. And we literally just caught the signal as it was shut down.

The Big Ear was built for radio astronomers to make a sky map, so it had swept across that area before, perhaps several times, and no signal had been detected. Of course, it is unlikely that aliens would broadcast continuously, in all directions around their planet. Likely they would only sometimes be pointing their signal at Earth. Probably pointing in other directions most of the time. Maybe we will get lucky, and every 50 years they turn on the transmitter and broadcast all around the sky for a year, and then listen for a response.

Radio signals emitted by alien technology are not necessarily messages meant for us or even messages of any kind at all. Perhaps it didn't repeat because the aliens are completely unaware that one of their radio waves was detected by us. It's fun to speculate!
Imagine that was a warning or help signal sent through the universe but abruptly cut off because it's source got destroyed.

Thought something similar... there's noting indicating this signal, if really produced by alien life, was directed at us.
Not diving into conspiracy theories as to why we haven’t heard anything in 50 years another big reason is that we just can’t go through all the data fast enough. We’ve been compiling data for many many years, but can’t keep up with looking at it. Another big problem is that sometimes when we’re looking at data we’re looking for very specific things so sometimes other big discoveries go unnoticed just because we weren’t looking for them at that time.

Yeah, I wonder about similar things too…specifically this, when it comes to alien communication: How are we so sure that the electromagnetic spectrum is how aliens would choose to communicate? It’s *preposterously* slow and easily compromised…to get a message to our nearest star takes years, nevermind the return trip. I have this (completely uneducated) “theory” that, at some point, we’ll discover some form of quantum communication and after some refinement, etc, the quantum airwaves will be filled with messages from all over the universe.
yea they could of missed something in all of that data, people do get tired looking at this information all the time, it should put online for others to look over if that has not already been done.
but... you would only have to scan the section of sky the original signal originated, which they have, and no subsequent signal detected unfortunately. was probably random (or caused by frequency clash). But ofc it's always worth double, triple checking etc.. in the whole scheme of things.
What if it's just a prank from aliens? Something like an alien guy got bored with his job observing human civilization on earth then decided to do something fun by sending a specific radio signal to prank the lesser civilization but then his superior found out and fired him and that's why we have never heard something similar ever again.

I’ve been watching thoughty2 for years now…. Just recently caught my 11 year old son watching a video of his a couple weeks ago…. My boy told me he has been watching him for awhile now too!
For the past 2 weeks anytime we enter a room together we drop a “FORTY two here!”
The signal could also have been transmitted by a space ship, that can explain why, when we look at the same spot again, we cant find the signal annymore.

Ya know, with between 100 & 400 BILLION stars in the Milky Way and at least that number of planets... You'd really expect space to be filled with noise, not just random black holes and quasars, but intelligent type of stuff... And then you remember just how freaking big space is & how spread out all of those stars really are, and really... Finding anything at all is amazing to me.
If there was a compelling human based explanation, certainly it would've occurred more than once. It would have to be communication technology related. And with extraordinary advancements since the 1970's, wouldn't it manifest again? One other thing--we often think in time frames of our own existence. Perhaps that first signal received in 1970 might take until 2070 for the next iteration is detected.
Or perhaps it was sent only once for the reason we only did it once. Cost and practicality. If it indeed was an alien race and one of a similar technological level to ours, that seems quite reasonable. To them, we're just another point in space, possibly overlooked.
Yes they are likely firing one signal in one direction at a time, but firing at an insane number of directions so the next time they get around to us in a loop could be 100 years or more. If we detect the same signal the same amount of time apart, that's interesting. Also they may expect us to be able to know which direction it's coming from to fire signals back. Effectively letting each other know we exist and to work towards that direction to meet up.
You have really outdone yourself this time. The amount of work you put into this to explain it in a way that anyone could understand is nothing short of astounding.

Maybe it was an inter dimensional unicorn and this was the result of it farting but it’s stomach has settled now so we’ll never see the signal again. So sad to think about if true.

The signal at least made more people take more notice of space bourne signals and widen the search parameters. The universe is huge looking at the right spot at the right time is pure chance too much "sky" to monitor constantly, so it's always going to be a game of chance.

I suppose one explanation for why there was no information in the Wow Signal could be similar to a situation in the first Mass Effect game. Wherein the Council tells you they have a team on Virmire investigating Saren. The Salarian councilor says that "the signal we received was little more than static. But, the transmission was sent on a channel reserved for mission critical information. Whatever they were trying to tell us, we know it was important". This is assuming alot, especially considering I'm using a sci-fi game as reference, but given the lack of hard evidence beyond the initial Wow Signal, it might be worth considering. Which I guess falls into the Dark Forest theory if whatever civilization sent the signal couldn't send anything of substance

"Who" wouldn't tell you? A university detected it.... not some CIA, DOD, or some other black ops site.. "seti" and even Nasa don't have many direct employees, what they do is to fund different universities to work on the research, and universities are full of Scientists.. Science heavily involves peer review, which means as soon as that signal got detected, it was sent across the world to other scientists to verify what he is seeing. You just can't keep stuff like this quiet

I do have a question: with Earth slowly rotating on its axis, wobbling slowly, and revolving around the sun - I imagine the "alien world would be making these movements - and our solar system, like all the other star systems, are moving through the Milky Way, could Earth have been in the target line of the signal for that brief amount of time? With EVERYTHING moving around in many ways all the time, perhaps the signal is still out there (assuming it was sent like a laser beam), but we are just not at the right place in the Milky Way to hear it again?

Very likely those aliens themselves had very similar issues back in their past. When it comes to being warlike/aggressive, natural selection tends to favor territorial and expansive species, so there probably aren't that many ultra pacifistic aliens either who would gasp at human capability for violence.

The Wow! Signal could be the equivalent of a text that got shot off to the wrong address. Perhaps that signal wasn't meant for us humans.

Many years might have passed for us, but only a few seconds for them. While we wonder why the signal was never repeated, they're just about to, in their time frame. Who knows?

What the telescope heard was a short burst of static. One thing that it might have been was similar to a phonic ping, like that used on submarines. If an alien race was looking for something specific that could and would respond to the same signal, but not be recognized by others is the same thing that we do on earth with our own military and civilian devices.
If there was enough intelligent life in the universe for that ping to be reliable despite being so short, we'd see the signals from those other intelligent species more than the ping. The ping also couldn't simply have stopped upon receiving a ping back from us, because of how incredibly long it takes light to traverse space, our very first radio waves haven't even reached that far beyond our neighboring stars, let alone out into the galaxy and into other galaxies(with it taking millions of years to reach Andromeda).
Human race v.2 that’s developed far beyond us waiting for us to figure out to respond with the same key code message in the same frequency yup. Universal echo location. They probably don’t even need a response there just waiting for their signal to get back to them to give them our exact location. Or we just happen to notice like we notice a breeze in the wind but there’s nothing to respond to and it’s some fundamental static in the universes’ solar wind created by interaction of solar winds from celestial bodies which we just don’t even think to test for but happen to catch a sample of in another code for another system similar to the system that would be used to measure the static of the universes’ solar wind

Yes. It's so improbable that it could be another lifeform that also uses radio signals. There's completely zero evidence of any other carbon based life anywhere near our corner of an immense universe

Imagine driving down the road at say 70 miles an hour when you see a light reflection out of the side of your eye for one second. You drive down the road till you find a place to turn around and go back finding another place to turn around .Then try to catch that same glint out of your eye . About the same ,only larger to find that signal again.

Let's assume it is of alien origin. It might be from a civilization that is not significantly superior to us technologically. I can imagine that it is nothing more than a "we are/were here" signal. They could have built a radio emitter on one of their moons that beam a very narrow beam with little spread so that the signal can go very far, but the beam is slowly scanned over their entire night sky over a long period. They could have designed it very robustly and automated so that it could function for centuries without intervention. It could in a sense be like a monument for them with the aim that whoever out there (us!) are lucky enough to pick up the signal can know they're not alone. It might not be designed to say anything more than that. Inherent to its design, anyone who picks up the signal will only do so briefly, so there's no need to encode anything on it. An interstellar "the Zorgs were here" signal. They're not expecting anything back. They might be trapped in their solar system due to the same constraints we face. It's like cosmic writing on a cell wall. This is of course all very speculative.

The WOW signal was not recorded in a way that allows us to check it for the presence of modulation. The only record of WOW is the alpha-numeric readout that was output to a line printer.
Exactly, and it was recording data in 10-second intervals, any modulation would be at far shorter intervals than that and would thus "blend together" in the recorded data.

I know pretty much nothing here but- could it have still been an instrument error? In an age where we have computers in most homes, we know they have a habit of doing random glitches that we can't reproduce, or that never happen again. It could very easily have just been a random glitch

I have my own possible theory. Maybe it could have been a sort of distress signal from a ship or space station, or planet. I think it is likely that a more advanced civilization with the ability to travel through space would probably also be able to locate the source of a radio signal pretty easily, so that could be why there was no information encoded in the signal. And we recognize the probable universal significance of 1420 MHz, much like the universal understanding of SOS here on Earth (• • • - - - • • •).
It was probably a rerun of "I Love Lucy" bouncing off of a passing meteor, or someone walking around in their socks touching a doorknob in the listening lab. Go back to sleep everybody. Nothing to see here.

I'm sorry you are ill informed.
We can say with a very high degree of confidence what Wow! was not. We cannot say with the same high level of confidence what it was. The most peturbing thing about Wow! is the Big Ear telescope only detected it in 1 of its 2 receivers and we dont know which one. It seems very unusual that the signal either ended or started in the time Earth's rotation put one of the receivers in the right place to detect it.

The wow signal was just a stray transmission from a passing ship, that's why there's nothing in that direction and why we've never seen it again.
If no one is allowed to transmit at 1420 mhz and the only people that are are owned by Government forces who also own the detection equipment that no one is allowed to own and they claim it hasn't been heard again in 50 years, what are the mathematical chances that they are lying about it and we just don't have any way of knowing that they are lying because we cannot cross reference their work?

Professor Antonio Paris, of St Petersburg College, has now discovered the explanation: A pair of comets. The work was published in the Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences.
These comets, known as 266P/Christensen and 335P/Gibbs, have clouds of hydrogen gas millions of kilometers in diameter surrounding them. The Wow! Signal was detected at 1420MHz, which is the radio frequency hydrogen naturally emits. Notably, the team has verified that the comets were within the vicinity at the time, and they report that the radio signals from 266/P Christensen matched those from the Wow! signal.

Perhaps an alien civilization sent out a burst, and then paused for several weeks, and just listened.
When they got a return signal in response, they figured, they knew there was another civilization out there and that was all they needed to know and thus they shut up.
Perhaps that is how we should be doing it?
I don't know if that is how events occurred after the signal was heard, but it could be an explanation...

If and when it happens, it’s going to be disappointing. Highly likely for it to be very primitive or just plain extinct. Still exciting discoveries in their own way, but it’s not the advanced sentient life we think of or that Captain Kirk would inevitably try to shag.
