    4:15 the blob fish doesn't look like that. Due to living at that depth, whenever it gets caught and dragged to the surface by fishermen their body gets distorted into a blob of ugly flesh because of the pressure change
    If you look up blobfish you can actually find images of them in their natural depth and they look way less ugly
    So giving it the ugliest animal alive is like if they threw a naked person into outer space and pulled it back just to say "wow this animal is ugly as hell haha"

  • @thatfeeble-mindedboy
    @thatfeeble-mindedboy Před rokem +2

    Another way one might get a grip on just how far down the Marianas trench reaches: mid- thirty thousands of feet describes both the ocean trench depth, AND a very common cruise altitude of an airliner in flight. Think of looking out of your window on a typical flight, but on a sunny, crystal-clear day (or night FTM) when highways are barely discernible, only large vehicles of a high-contrast color, and moving can be seen, only larger bodies of water, and cities are just different, more “busy” In texture, and appearing to be cut up into squares and rectangles, etc. If you were on a boat directly above the Challenger Deep, looking over the side, and all water beneath you suddenly vanished, then the ocean floor, about 35,000 below your little boat, would look the same as your airliner view if there were familiar things to see, but one can imagine a white-hulled yacht the size of an 18 wheeler that just sank would be barely discernible, against a dark background, and you happened to know exactly where to look. Otherwise, an object would have to be the size of a 747 to even be noticed by a casual observer. That’s a long way down. In fact, an object were dropped from that height, or a little boat suddenly had all the water under the keel suddenly vanish, assuming a terminal velocity of about 120 mph, rounded off to 180 feet per second, then it would take about 3 1/2 minutes for it to reach the bottom. Imagine free-falling at that speed for 3 1/2 minutes…
    If you laid 35,000 feet out on a desert highway, it would go for about 6 1/2 miles. An average human adult walks about 3 miles per hour, so it would take them a good 2 hours and almost 15 minutes to walk that distance. It’s a long way down.

      One of the things he forgot to mention was how greater oxygen concentrations alllow for larger animals. We currently have 21% oxygen in our atmosphere, but all the great dinosaurs lived at a time when it was more like 35%.
      Oxygen's solubility in water is dependent on pressure. In deep water oxygen will be far more soluble, not just in the water but also in the tissues of any animal dwelling there. So this could lead to gigantism by the same process that dinosaurs grew so large.

    11:06 - Correction: Sinking is not a function of weight, but of density. Cooler substances tend to be more dense than warmer, and so tend to sink. Temperature does not affect a substance's weight. (Edit: Correction to the correction -- True, weight is a function of more than mass, and has much to do with its environs. That being the case, temperature can technically affect weight, but an effect that is highly conditional.)

    There might just be buildings at the bottom of the Ocean, because it wasn't always the bottom of the Ocean.
    The Ocean is one of the few places we haven't done proper Archeology work in, but they have found structures underwater so who knows what else could be under the Ocean floor.

      The bottom of the ocean has always been the bottom of the ocean since being made at mid-ocean ridges. You're thinking of pieces of continental crust that occasionally get inundated or lifted. But none of that compares to the depth of the ocean floor.

    I wonder if creatures ended up getting scarier looking because it's so dark down there that they never had to evolve "good looks" and they just leaned fully into the creepy crawlers that live in the Dark vibe.*Also with the deep sea gigantism, I think a big part of it is that cold water holds more oxygen rich waters and cold water entices larger animals as well. Then take Antarctic oceans. They have the most cold, nutrient rich, high oxygen level parts of the oceans. *The ocean greatly depends on upwelling to keep the ocean healthy because it brings up oxygen rich cold water to mix with top level warmer water. It's what keeps large krill populations healthy and abundant.
