I love Cult of the Lamb. It's like Don't Starve and The Binding of Isaac had a beautiful bastard child.

Now I don't know about anyone else, but I love all four of the games y'all have compared it too and I'm shocked that I've barely watched anything on it. I keep seeing it, I just never touched it.

Love how you added Cult of the Lambs aesthetics into your intertitles and such. Similar to how you use old timey effects for your Don't Starve stuff.

I've never played a city management game akin to those you mentioned, but I have played a solid amount of Issac (years ago, during Rebirth before the dlc's) and Gungeon.
Cult of the Lamb's been incredible so far, because its manages to make the chill farming Animal crossing Stardew valley stuff be actually entertaining and fun to do, with the charm and the customization, the pacing, and the fact that whenever I get bored of it or run out of things to do i can just go crusade and get a fresh change of pace, only to come back and have a bunch of other things to fix and upgrade.
The loop feeds into both sides excellently.

the roguelite genre is only as indiverse as you might care to see it for. Any genre can be seen at surface level and summed up as "more of the same". I can promise that the roguelite (do roguelikes even exist anymore?) genre is one of the richest, most varied genres in gaming, simply sue to how broad the specifications are. perma death and randomised runs. the rest is up to the developer, and then they decide to come out with bangers like the binding of Isaac, risk of rain 1 and 2, dead cells, enter the gungeon, spelunky and hades. These games are extremely different (I chose this selection to be so on prupose) because the actual gameplay elements have no actual guidelines, only the mechanics of the game's overrall progression, so the developers can kind of just go apeshit with the game. Roguelike shooter? check. Roguelike dungeon crawler? That's where the genre comes from in the first place. Roguelike soulslike? That's a lot of likes. Roguelike bullet hell? easy. Roguelike platformer? absoloute classic. Roguelike metroidvania? Yes but what the hell? due to it's unrestricitve nature, the rogulite/like (again, roguelikes literally don't even exist anymore) can mesh pretty well with many other genres, leading to some very novel concepts.

Cult of the Lamb was a fun game, but ultimately one I found very disappointing in nearly every possible aspect. It's solid fun, but it doesn't actually have any of the strengths that rogue-likes are good for. The utter shallowness of it's combat and build system make replayability, the entire POINT of the Rogue-like genre, near non-existent for CotL, as there simply is no depth to make playing the game past initial completion worth it. Which leaves you to rely on the content already in the game, which is also... lacking. 4 bosses, only a couple of which I found particularly fun and none of them all that unique, and one final boss, which WAS pretty good, but once you finish those five bosses, there's so little left to do worth getting into.
Meanwhile, the other half of the game, cult management, is also very barebones. Cult management is filled largely with choices between two options, and generally, the options boil down to either both will change little, or one is clearly way better than the other. Once you have enough resources to survive the early game, you will *never* have challenge in cult management again and nothing you do matters.
CotL Is fun, but I think it is carried so hard by it's outstanding art and FANTASTIC music, that if you stripped away those two parts of the game, I don't think anyone would have bought this game, especially not at it's current price. This is a 10$ game, maybe. It has some of the most mediocre gameplay I've ever seen in a roguelike, with content to match. I cannot overstate that it is exclusively due to it's incredible art and music that this is elevated from a 5/10 to a 6.5/10. I wish there was more to the game, because it seems like this developer does not really understand how to develop a good rogue-lite, as they fostered absolutely zero of the genre's strengths.

like I said in the video, for these reasons I don't think calling it a roguelike is 100% fair. for me, viewing the game as it's own thing made me appreciate it a bit more

I played this game for awhile on the hardest difficulty (I think 12 hours?) and I quit after beating the 2nd boss. I really enjoyed the time I spent playing the game, but the problem that made me quit was the bugs. My followers would ask me for something and not even tell me what they wanted, I only had like 5 people come in when I called them in to do a ritual, the game froze when I cooked or saved, I almost got softlocked in my cult area because I ran out of grass and couldn’t built decorations, and loads of other things that just made this game go from a “It’s great you should play it”, into a “Hold off for a tiny bit until they fix the bugs.” Without the bugs, 8/10. With the bugs, 5/10.

Reducing Oxygen not Included down to it's priority system and then going further claiming it's a non inovative cash grab is an extremely surface level hot take and already makes me question your opinion in Cult of the Lamb.
_Obviously_ the guy that only cares about the surface level would be blown away by Cult of the Lambs flashy visuals and novel concept and gloss over it's shallow gameplay depth and clunky game feel.

    • @FreddoFilms
      @FreddoFilms  Před rokem

I don't recall saying ONI was a 'non innovative cash grab.'
to tell the truth, I was a bit worried about using footage of specific games in the background of that segment. I didn't want to call games out specifically so I just used random ones in my library in the respective category.
in retrospect it might have been worth it to blur them out or find those generic games that companies use for footage, idk

    -Call the game masterpiece
-A roguelike that doesn't even have more than 20 hours of gameplay to offer because lack of replayability

Game feel is abysmal tho. All flash but no juice. Hitting something feels like slapping a wall with a paper towel except somehow YOU are the one that gets knocked back and have to painstakingly put the towel back in your pocket in slowmo.
Spells feel clunky, slow and unimpactfull.

It was great playing cult of the lamb, but I felt like I wasn’t getting enough. Unlike gungeon, Isaac, and the other roguelite games I’ve played felt very full. But cult of the lamb doesn’t really reach all the way for me.

  • @sopito9923

I'd wouldn't say it "COMBINES" two genres, it only seems the two coexist, also the game loop isn't innovating at all, and for me at least, the grafics don't go well, the pseudo 3D is nauseating and the arena seems too claustrophobic
the RNG is too prevalent through the beginning too, it depends heavily on the weapon you start to see if the run will go well "oh but skill issue" ok, if you're good you can win every single game but it is definitely better and more enjoyable wen your not suffering throughout the process
people get so carried away with the game because in rouge-likes the only progress you have is in skill, witch for me is fine, but for the other type of people seems like they accomplished nothing, and this game give them something to show in the end of the day, so it resonates better with this type of public (I think)
I couldn't bring myself to play more of the game to be able to make and essay about why I didn't like it nor to make it more informative but those was the motives that came to mind
on a side note, I hate how much this game is mainstream, I know if deserves because is well made and new but holly shit, this is everywhere and I'm not even clicking on it (so my algorithm wouldn't get messed up)
also, I thought it was a public consent that rouge-likes were "perma-death no rewards or progress of any kind" (like EtG)
and rouge-lites had some type of reward after every run making it easier to progress the more you try (hades).
at times in the video it just seemed Freddo was taking the piss about rouge-likes
    edit: minors spelling errors

The gameplay seems terrible..................... Purely because I do not play either Roguelikes (besides Rogue that one time) or Colony Simulators so it will not appeal to me as I am not the intended audience... Though the art and music seems pretty good.
