French is complicated😅 for us a servant is not a housekeeper, and a gouvernante is not a maitre d'hotel, a cook is not a pâtissier and a handy man is not a Gardner....they r all distinctive job/tasks so it was hard for her to find an English word that translate each position.

Wonderful photo, I suggested that be the wall mural. It’s a snapshot of history. Every person there had a story. Plus the beautiful chateau background. I just love it. The black & white coloring & all. I wouldn’t alter it. She has the light grays/blue gray throughout, then turning the corner to the gold door. Beautiful.

....how very poignant and sadly tragic that it "emptied the French countryside" of so many young men just out of boyhood really ...think how long it must have taken for the French population to recover ...same for England and many countries in Europe ...Americans were late to the 'game' in WWII so we didn't lose as many ...also in WWI I think. God bless all those young men and their memory!

    femme de menage = housemaid
    sanglier = wild boar
6:00 Serge - yes please, English speakers, just ignore the spelling and listen. It's easy to say. "er" = "air" ... It's just like saying the word "air", something we can all easily say. Mispronouncing words is no big deal. But names are very person and it's worth making an extra effort.
    8:34 poules = hens, chickens
8:40 les oeufs = eggs ... and then he says there were people around who would steal the eggs
It was a real pleasure to hear what the original family had to say. Thank you so much for bringing them. And my thanks to them for allowing themselves to be filmed.

What a treasure of photos, and super nice people. I guess you had some of your questioned answered but it appears that even with having a staff of people running the chateau, the bathroom conditions were lacking and we aren’t talking about the 1800’s! I can’t understand the French toilet and bath/sink area being in two different places. I guess just my need for extreme cleanliness!!! Hi Carole, Adrian & Beth, A great tour of the Chateau with the former owners. I hope they were happy to see it under your capable hands doing the restoration. In the end, they made the right decision to sell when they could no longer manage the Chateau as it needed. Keep up the work you are doing and you'll be able to pass it on to the next owner to care for it as you are. Mark & Scott

This was fascinating. We certainly enjoyed seeing and hearing from a member of the family who were the original chateau owners. Sometimes it is hard for me to understand how so many of these families ultimately let go of their family homes. But, there were a number of large factors that came together at the same time- the world wars and the resulting loss of wealth of so many of the European families, as well as smaller numbers of family members and staff to take care of the buildings. And, if you didn't have the determination and willingness to put in a fraction of the work of Adrian and Carole, then the decline would continue.
Except for one of the photos, most of the photos seem to be from before this gentleman would have been born. I get the impression that by the time this man was growing up in this building, it was long past the time of its glory days. By that time, they were likely having to be resourceful in finding ways to bring in basic income in the form of making their farm a producer of dairy and meat products that they could sell to the surrounding villages. It would have been a distant memory to when his grandparents and great-grandparents first lived here. It would be nice to know, though, how it became totally deserted to where it had so seriously declined like so many other chateaus.

For those that need an interpreter:
The previous owner his name is Serge - "Surge" - Carole has difficulty pronouncing his name): "1918, the Armistice - a mass was celebrated on the grounds of the chateau.
Regarding the entrance that was originally a cupboard. In fact, it held a type of dumbwaiter. The servants and the cooks were downstairs in the kitchen and would send the dishes up in the dumbwaiter to the dining room for service by the butler. Previous owner: The domestic staff (butler, housekeeper, servants, housemaid, assistant chef) - they were underneath, in the kitchen and they slept above the family bedrooms, on the 2nd floor. So... the cooking was done in the basement kitchen. Young lass: so there was a cook, a housemaid, a housekeeper, a governess, a servant, a housemaid (one who swept and Hoovered the floors). Carole: A "femme de ménage"? Lass: How you say, a house cleaner, (cleaning woman that doe the vacuuming and washing the floors), plus a gardener for the garden. Also there was lots of cookers for the cook (meaning the head cook and his/her staff - assistant chef, prep cook, etc)
Adrian: What was the rack for? Serge: Winchester! (Rifles) for hunting. Carole: What did you shoot? Owner:The grandparents hunted wild boars (not pigs). They also hunted wild birds - pheasants.
Serge: advised the vat that Adrian calls a "lavoir" - is a type of deep sink where clothing were washed in the old days.
Animal games: Serge describe hens.....we break the eggs, then we eat them. But during the wars, there were people that would steal eggs (to survive or to sell to get supplies for their families).
In regards to the toilet in the cupboard.... the reason the bidet was outside the toilet section was because there wasn't enough room next to the toilet for one, so they had to put it in the separate room.
The rest of the video there is enough English from Adrian that we can all understand.
Hope this helps every one. Take care.
