  • In this video will be going over the best magic item weapons that are of uncommon quality or lower, basically early level magic weapons, because that's where the vast majority of D&D games actually take place.

Not even considered a martial anymore, feels bad man.
Also, I remember when I converted the Heartwood Ring from Baldur's Gate 2 to just be Rod of the Pact Keeper but for Druids and Rangers and trades spell slot regen for being a casting focus useable by Rangers, and my DM said it was maybe a little too strong. @@BramLastname Honestly, I agree, partially. They basically took a bunch of Unearthed Arcana's, nerfed what didn't need nerfing (personal examples are Barbarian stuff, removing Spell Versatility, and Ranger's things almost all being replacements while most other classes got bumped up to optional additions) and buffed what didn't need to be buffed (several +1 casting items, so much Druid stuff, Twilight Cleric is absurd I hear, giving Rogues "aim"). So instead of stuff like barbarian being able to give up advantage on DEX saves for 2 Expertise skills, you MAYBE get one or 2 extra skill proficiencies from the Barbarian list of 6, while the Moon Druid can now have a Cauldron of "I don't need diamonds to cast Raise Dead"

    • @Levyathyn
      @Levyathyn Před 3 lety +22

      Hmm I'd say:
1 - Psychic; some will say Force, and for good reason, as while almost nothing resists Force or is immune to it, Psychic is in almost the same boat with one notable improvement--while uncommon to encounter, Bear Totem Barbarians are also weak to Psychic and Psychic alone, making it take the edge for those rare cases where your DM puts you against such top-level optimized PC builds where Psychic and Force will fare roughly the same in most circumstances, leaving Psychic the only way to deal full damage to that one niche build. On the other hand, while taking double damage from Psychic damage is rare, it DOES happen, as opposed to Force, which nothing in the core books is weak to.
2 - Force; as mentioned above with Psychic, there's almost nothing resistant to it across the entire game, it's effective from low levels on, and it tends to always be reliable. There's some concerns about how often Force gets tied to low damage dice for its rolls (like with how Psychic is often relegated to utility spells and abilities) but ignoring that, it's pretty potent and, when talking about raw numbers, is almost always easy to pump into enemies and count on getting your full damage.
3 - Magical Weapon Attacks; it sounds very dumb, but the simple improvement of giving magical weapon damage has a HUGE effect on melee DPS across a wide variety encounters, especially once players start going up into Tier 2 gameplay and literally for the entire rest of the game above it. While resistance to normal physical damage is extremely common, the same damage but magical is almost completely on the level, flat and effective against pretty much everything in the core game and very rarely resisted, without a single listed creature in all of 5e that's immune to it.
4 - Radiant; Radiant shines, no pun intended, and like the two fully-magical kinds of damage mentioned above, has almost no direct counters in 5e. That said, while it's almost always good and would pretty much rank alongside either of them in a GENERAL comparison for PC use, Radiant has a couple of problems. That said, there are several creatures in 5e resistance to Radiant damage. You typically won't be fighting them, though extra non-core monsters add a few more types, but it still stands out. For raw numbers and general use, Psychic, Radiant, and Force are about equal--but if I HAVE to rank them in order, these are their placements, and these are the reasons why.
5 - Thunder; while it seems strange for this of all elements to be this high, it makes sense. Thunder is somewhat uncommon, and while it does have a few more resistant creatures than something like Necrotic, which hasn't shown up yet, it bears a lot less creatures who are IMMUNE to it, which makes it stand out. I can't remember if there's anything that takes double from it, but it's very reliable and that brings a lot to the table.
6 - Necrotic; similar to Thunder above, Necrotic tends to be relegated to very specific attacks, or more niche spells, but on a flat numbers comparison it has a few less things that are resistant to it, and a whole lot more that are immune completely. And in the Monster Manual, at least, there's nothing vulnerable to it, but you get used to it. One thing in its favor is that the creatures you would EXPECT to be resistant to or immune to Necrotic typically are, and so it's usually pretty easy to see the defense coming.
7 - Acid; Acid is the last element we get to before we hit the core group and have to deal with a MASSIVE jump in the number of resistances and immunities, so enjoy it while it lasts. As a damage type, it has some special uses, usually to keep certain creatures from regenerating, but in terms of reliability it's not awful. It has something like 20 resistant creatures in the MM, if I recall, so while it's not exceptional in any real area, it suffers less than the Big Three.
8 - Lightning; the clear winner of the bottom 3 of this list, with only around 10 immune creatures, and somewhere under 40 creatures that are resistant to it, clearing both Cold and Fire, each of which have around 40 immunes. The worst thing about lightning is how rare it is for a creature to actually take double damage from it, something that--had Cold and Fire been less completely defended against--would have really hurt it, in my book. But, it is what it is.
9 - Fire; In a surprise pick, I placed Fire over Cold. Despite Fire having the single most elemental immune creatures in the entire core set, somewhere close to 40, it has one standout feature that gave it the edge over Cold, for me, and that's also having the most elemental vulnerabilities. Only like ten creatures in the game take double damage from Fire, but it's enough to matter. And despite being so commonly halved or ignored against a wide variety of enemies in the game, when you really need Fire, it's so easy to get access to and so potent in the spells and effects that use it to pull through. Counting non-core monsters added through new books that have come out, Fire has around 15 creatures vulnerable to it.
10 - Cold; while I'd say these past three elements are roughly as equivalent as the top three are, in comparison to each other, there has to be a lowest spot. Cold, while close to Fire in many regards, takes it to me. For being a widely available and commonly defended-against element, it's pretty solid, in the middle of the road. Far less creatures are resistant to it than Fire, though they share about the same number of immune types, and it has less than half the number of creatures vulnerable to it.
      ---
Non-magical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage is the first and only runner-up. Poison did not make the list, with an overwhelming 220+ creatures completely immune to the damage, and 240+ immune to the condition.

Magic Missile is a bad example as you don't need a focus to cast it in the first place (as it doesn't have a material component), but yes. Monks suffer from having to spread out ASI,
So anything that either increases CON or WIS,
or just allows for general staying power
      (Such as the Blood Spear)
or help to disengage more easily is appreciated.
(Make sure it isn't armour tho, monks don't like armour)
That being said the best effect you can give them
Is an item that they can attune to to get an extra ki point,
I'd reccommend giving that to anyone foolish enough to choose way of the 4 elements (and make it so that it counts as 2 ki points for an elemental feature)
Because that sub-class is one of the biggest self sabotages there is.

to deal 1(d4) additional piercing damage.
I know that's technically not a magic item,
But it's just as effective as a magic item.
(this does mess with the flavour of the monk a bit,
But there's characters that would love to be a bit more of a streetfighter
Also I rule knuckledusters as an improvised monk weapon
common ones add 1 piercing or bludgeoning depending on type,
and uncommon ones add 1d4 piercing to unarmed strikes.
You could even make a +2 variant or a 1d4-1 variant,

now I could just say flame tongue and done but I want to have some actual credibility so I am currently doing research so far I found three good ones first is the Dvotees censer which is only available to cleric and paladins and only does an additional d8 of damage but it has an additional affect where it heals 1d4 at 10 for 1minute but you can’t use it till the next dawn. next was The flame tongue which is an additional 2d6 points of damage and finally The mace of smiting it basically has extra affects when fighting constructs but it still has affect even if you’re not fighting constructs so I think it’s good as for the best like i would know.

Honestly I've seen a lot of Dms complaining about the weapons of warning and tbh... I'd have to agree that they suck ASS. Yes it's a very powerful magic item, but it's too powerful seeing as it's an uncommon item that literally gets rid of an entire mechanic within the game. That being surprise rounds. Be honest, how often are the party members not within 30 ft of each other.
Me and my Dm talked about a way to balance these items.
So for starters you keep your advantage on initiative, you get a +3 or 5 to your passive perception(couldnt decide on what was best), and during a surprise round you get a +2 to AC.
This way you can still be surprised but have a higher chance not to be surprised due to the +3 or 5 passive perception and even if you are the enemy has a less likely chance to hit you due to the +2 to AC. This way it's more balanced "not getting rid of an entire mechanic" and it's still a pretty powerful magic item for uncommon.

Insignia of Claws Is not a “weapon” and as such opens your list a little, I would say the Rod Of The Pact Keeper should have rated the #2 spot.

I would put the great axe +1 as an extra here (though it is for barbarians as if they crit get ONE extra damage die)
    To clarify:
Crit with a 1d12 weapon is 2d12 plus 1d12 extra for barbarians
Crit with a 2d6 weapon is 4d6 plus 1d6 extra for barbarians

Please dont include wildemount and make it seem like official content. It is at best partnered setting specific content. It is untested homebrew. Banned on most tables. I will neve be allowed in adventurers league etc. It will never be in a PHB. At best it is allowed on an ask first basis.
