We had bad injuries within the team from the start and England fans deep down thought we were actually going to win the World Cup. Italy, Spain, France , Germany, Brazil, Portugal they all had better teams and players and had better players in certain positions that we never had.

    The pundits always blamed the manager and never once considered how good Portugal actually were. They talk of England as if they had a divine right to get to the final. These sort of pundits had decades of arrogance behind them. Did Ian Wright seriously think, not bringing on Walcott was the reason they didn't get to the semi final? Bizarre how these people think, Portugal were a GOOD side and England went toe to toe with them. They didn't get thrashed. They lost on penalties.

      Sven should have been sacked after Euro 2004 but because the FA had stupidly panicked giving him a more expensive contract after fearing Chelsea wanted him, they couldn't afford to sack him for another few years.
      Only good thing Sven really ever did for England was the 5-1 win over Germany and then beating Argentina at the 2002 World Cup. After that he was a let down who overstayed his welcome and wasted what was our strongest generation of players in decades.

      @@vampireducks1622 It's 3 out of 10.
      And it's not that England are bad at pens. Netherlands, Italy & Spain have exited a lot of tournaments on pens as well.
      If you look at the ones England lost they were all close shootouts including both Portugal shootouts where England were even handicapped for them not having Rooney in either and not having MichaelOwen as well in 2006. There was still never any 3-0 shootout losses or anything like that, the opposition always had to take at least 5 to win where as England won in just 4 vs Spain...(It was 1 lost 1 won at that point) and England had some kind of advantage in EVERY shootout before they eventually lost it so I don't get why people make out England are so bad at them?? The shootout vs Germany in Euro96 was 1of the most high quality shootouts ever in a major tournament for both teams so no one then could claim England weren't good at pens, it must've been harshly spoken about after this 2nd Portugal shootout. The first was in Portugal and again England on the whole did well on the beach pitch 6-5 it finished and England technically won before pens anyway but for UrsMeier. AshleyCole should've gone before Carragher in 2006.
      You mentioned Spain 1996 was lucky to go to pens. You could literally say the same thing about all of the shootouts England lost that the opposition were lucky to play pens or lucky to play an hour or more with a numerical advantage I.e Argentina 1998 75 mins England had 10 men. 2006 60minutes England had 10 men.
      2004 England scored legit winning goal on 90mins disallowed etc...1996 vs Germany Anderton hit the post almost open goal in golden goal extra-time then Gascoigne was a centimetre away from tap in to win the game.

  • @classicsportclassictiyl8547

    The analysis summed it up Sven Goran-Eriksson played a major part in England's demise in Germany 2006 because there was no balance, there was no cohesion. The system of 4-5-1 with Rooney up front solo was madness it didn't work apart from against Ecuador where it barely worked and it did play a part in the red card because he was playing a role that didn't suit him at all and was getting frustrated because he was isolated as Alan Hansen mentioned. He only bought 4 strikers to this tournament Owen wasn't fully fit and blew his knee out in the group stage, Rooney wasn't fully fit because of the broken metatarsal against Chelsea just before the end of the 2005/06 Premier League season, Crouch he didn't fancy at all and Walcott I do not have a clue why he was picked ahead Darren Bent who had a great season at Charlton scoring 18 goals with only 2 of the greatest ever Premier League strikers Ruud Van Nistelrooy with 21 and Thierry Henry with 27 scoring more goals than Bent that season that's how good he was. As Gary Lineker mentioned with Rooney suspended for the semi final if England had won and possibly the final if England had gotten that far hypothetically England were out of strikers completely. England couldn't create anything either Lampard was shocking Gerrard didn't turn up to the party either and their penalties were poor as well.

    • @stelovesoasis
      @stelovesoasis Před 3 lety +4

      I think Rooney and Owen should have gone to the tournament, but not as our main strikers. He should have taken Rooney, Owen, Defoe and Bent, and only used Rooney and Owen as options to bring off the bench if we needed a goal. Starting Rooney as a lone striker, when he was unfit was madness.
      Sven also managed Owen poorly by playing him in all 3 of the group games. We'd already qualified for the next round by the time we'd played our final group game, and only needed a draw to top the group, so surely it would have made sense to have rested Owen and then bring him back in for the knockout games. I think playing too many games within a short space of time is what led to his injury.
      Another big issue was Lampard and Gerrard playing together. Even in a midfield 3 it didn't work, because they were too similar. We needed a playmaker and Scholes would have been perfect for that role, but of course Sven misused him playing him on the left, and he retired before the 06 world cup. Carrick was the next best thing, he could have filled that role. A midfield 3 of Carrick, Hargreaves and one of either Gerrard or Lampard was the way to go at this tournament, with either Defoe or Bent up front. Then you have the option of Rooney and Owen coming off the bench if needed.

    England enter every tournament with arrogance and a hyperactive media. However we can always depend on one thing. When they face one of the top sides in the tournament; they lose. They got to the final of Euro 2021 without facing one of the best sides in the tournament. They got to the semis of Russia 2018 by beating Panama, Tunisia (in the last minute), Columbia (on penalties) and Sweden. Contrast their route compared to France and Italy who won the tournaments. They haven’t beaten a top side in decades at a tournament. That’s why they won’t win one. Also, they believe that playing their XI best players (particularly in midfield) actually makes a team. England were so disappointing in this tournament. Nonetheless the thing they really should have highlighted here, rather than the sending off, was the Carragher penalty. The referee ordered a retake for absolutely no reason, having blown the whistle and clearly standing there awaiting the kick. Regardless of anything else, there is no way an Argentine referee should have been allowed to take an England match. Would that have happened to Brazil? No chance.
    I'm sure someone will pop up to say England were shit. The two things are not mutually exclusive. England had a run of extremely dodgy exits from 1998 - 2006 (I've left out 2010 which was the worst decision just because they were so far second best to Germany it was unreal) and it was hard to argue that they were given a fair crack of the whip with decisions. If putting the ball in the back of the net isn't allowed (Campbell twice and Carragher once) then you're going to struggle.
