when i was a youngster in the mid 90's i was playing football at a decent school level and for other teams. But the coaching back then was terrible.. and i knew it even back then. All the coaches looked for in players was strength and pace. all they wanted was the players to run down the wing and cross the ball. no imagination, no skill. just 100% focus on pace and strength. İ would always attempt back heals and flicks but each time i was told to stop. İ was even taken off the field once for doing a successful back heal becuase ı had been warned not to. skill and technical ability was coached out of young players in favour of strength and pace. so it doesnt surprise me that we are miles behind other nations regarding skill and technique.

No one expects England to even do well in tournaments these days, but so far that is 3 semi finals in 3 years, 2 for major competitions (not sure if nations league counts). People will complain about the teams they faced also, but England were crashing out in the round of 16 to the likes of Iceland and I'm pretty sure that the likes of Colombia, Sweden, Croatia (whom beat England), Germany and maybe even Ukraine are all better teams.

In the world cup it's been the same story also, knocked out in the first round after group stages (2010), finished bottom of the group stages in 2014 (where a finished Italy, not the best of Uruguayian teams and minnows Costa Rica finished above England). Notice how it's been the same story over and over again right up until Southgate got appointed, his first major tournament (Semi finals in the 2018 world cup - massive improvement already), 3rd place in the Nations League (the pattern of consistency starting to form - though can't break that semi final deadlock and in fact a semi finals curse is beginning to form as opposed to a group stage curse or a round of 16 curse lol), and now 2nd place in the Euros, first finals in 55 years with countless of different managers not being able to even once get into a final within that long timeframe. Every tourney so far there's literally been an improvement - not a step sideways or step back; WC2018: 4th, Nations League: 3rd, Euro 2020: 2nd. Was the closest to winning it aswell, the fact it went to penalties meant that the game wasn't decided by a result but by a 50/50 lottery chance in penalties, shows how far England have come through.

Thoughtful in his considerations about his own team's strengths and weaknesses, as well as smart tactical and personnel decisions- which has led to England being a genuinely competitive and courageous team. As for England it's too easy to say it was "just one game" when that game happened to be the first time they were coming up against a technically superior opponent. The same would have happened earlier had the drawn not allowed them to avoid France, Spain and Belgium.

Overhyped big names that used to get their arses handed to them whenever they met a good side. Southgate ironically of all people, refusal to play his ball retaining technically better player like Grealish and Foden, Sancho and insist with his Henderson’s and Mounts in midfield was England downfall again, Englands physicality and directness was effective but when the tide of the game changes these players struggle. Italy weatherd the storm and to took hold the game in 2012, 2014 and 2021. Croatia did the same in 2018. I think England are going the right direction just to fear other nations are still ahead and I think opportunities (2 now) have pasted us by.
