Michelin 2 1/2 tons floor jack repair, Part 2, re-assembly

  • After I got a Michelin 2 1/2 tons defective floor jack, I decided to open it up and see what could be the problem, and, if possible, to fix it.
    This shows that cleaning the parts before assembly makes sense...
    After careful re-assembly, the jack is going to have a new useful life. Also you'll see how to adjust the bypass for overload...
    Hope you enjoy...!

    Thanks for the upload, I played with my jack without knowledge then asked a guy from the auto parts store who tried telling me that I stuffed the jack and wanted to sell me a new one..... so I got a second opinion, so thanking you Pierre. My Jack is fixed again.

      Hi,
      If your make money only be selling things, then, nothing is fixable... ;)
      Lots of times the problems are quite easy to repair, and parts are quite inexpansive, but, some knowledge is required.
      For lots of us, including myself, CZcams is a great source of know how, we only need to use our judgement and fing the better ones... ;)
      Just curious, what was it...???
      Thanks for viewing and taking the time to share your experience, Pierre

      When the basic mechanics are ok, nothing stops us from doing a little repair job to save a potentially good tool, here is a real case of neglect on basic principles of assembly procedures, where the cleaning step was skipped...

    You so right . Got jack from Canadian Tire and every time i jacked the truck up it bled so very slowly . Pulled it a parts and found all kinds of crap in it. Import and no quality control.
    Good Video

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  Před 8 lety +1

      The problem is, with most of Chinese castings, they don't clean well before assembly...... :(
      This is what I call a very bad processing and quality control.
      The price only policy, from big players in the import business, contributes to aggravate this problem, greed is the source of lots of pains...
      Cheers, Pierre

      Hello Charles,
      This is a lower quality jack, even with the Michelin name printed on it... I've got a better one, it's a 3 1/2 tons unit that I use to lift the truck, it does the job so much easier, also it's like 15 or 20 yo, and, reliable...

    Hey buddy, you left out the 2 parts that were sitting on the right by your hand....one was a small solid steel cylinder (about 6mm diameter and 14mm length.... the other piece is rubber/vinyl type material, it is a corrugated sleeve that fits over the cylinder but is only 10mm long it has 5 raised rings built on the outside surface to seal...., the reason I bring this up is that I have the same 2 parts left from my rebuild and I watched your video to find where they went!! I watched the whole vid to find them and the only time I saw them both together was in the good whole view of the plastic tray @19.45 and a good view of the sleeve on it's end @19.33 , the cyl. can bee just seen in the same on the lower right side of the tray, I should say that the cylinder I have has a ball wear mark on one end, keep us posted if you find out where they go.... my jack does the same as yours(but it's better...it's red!!)

    I've got a handful of bottle jacks needing repair, this will be useful. I've also got a smaller floor jack that had one of those take apart lowboy semi trailers set down on it, making it into a nice sideways "U" shape. I'll probably use the hydraulic part of that for horizontal press work or build a scissor lift table for moving my lathe chucks and heavy work to and from the lathe. The back (and 'front') isn't going to take much more of manhandling those.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  Před 8 lety

      Some help with heavy handling is nice, with age the poor back takes a beating....
      Those jacks are not very complicated to repair, main failures are seals, damaged seats for bearings, or foreign parts or dirt, make sure you take good notes on disassembly though... ;)

    Interesting test to see how well - at the age one now has - one remembers. Good you take notes. Then there is the challenge of remembering to read the notes one wrote. After reading the note, it is then to remember why one is holding exactly that part. Then it is back to the notes. Occupational therapy: good stuff.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  Před 8 lety +1

      Hi Jim,
      Not even a question of age, even younger I couldn't remember how to get the things back together without taking notes. ( Talking here about the more complex things )
      I wrote the notes from viewing the video of the disassembling, ( the actual video is a little longer and detailed than the on CZcams), that gave me an exact overview of the unit, good thing I detailed the dimensions also...
      Everything ends well like in Disney movies... ;)

    I admire your thoroughness. Sadly the part that I waited for was skipped: how to refill it. I have the precise same jack. It had lost fluid overwinter and I have brought it part way back. When you filled was the jack horizontal? Did you fill from the port with the rubber stopper? Did you fill right up to the top? How did you purge? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  Před 6 lety

      The filling is done using the prot with the rubber stopper, you get it filled to the level of the port or near, then you pump it a few tims release, you know there is enough oil when you pump and release and noi oil drips out in operating position, make sure the air is out by getting no springy action when lifting heavy stuff.
      Getting rid o the air is normally no problem after 5 or more full pumps and adjusting the level as you go, a functionning jack won't over spill oil in operation even with the rubber cover open.
      Let me know if this works for you... ;)

    Très bon vidéos Pierre. Merci beaucoup ! J'ai ré-assemblé mon Michelin 3.5 tonnes de 1999 qui avait une fuite d'huile lorsque je soulevait ma VW Beetle 67. J'ai changé quelques o-ring, rempli le réservoir d'huile et effectué la purge d'air. Tout va bien dans le fonctionnement sans poids, mais si j'essaie de soulever mon VTT par example, mon jack ne peut pas le soulever. J'ai 3 vis d'ajustement intactes mais je n'ai pas procédé au dé-assemblage de ces vis encore. Que me suggères-tu? Pourquoi le jack manque de force? J'ai démantelé mon jack, et le cylindre est sur ma table de travail. Merci Pierre !

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  Před 2 lety +1

      Bonjour Guy, Si ma mémoire est bonne, il y a une vis pour la remontée rapide si ton jack en est pourvu, une des deux autres sert à ajuster le maximum de levage possible. Il y a possiblement n peu d'air dans ce secteur, ou, simplement un besoin d'ajustement, il n'est pas trop difficile d'ajuster, tu dois simplement t'assurer qu'il n'y a pas d'air dans cette zone en dévissant et laisser un peu d'huile s'échapper jusqu'à ce qu'il n'y ait plus d'air, ensuite, mettre sur le jack le poids maximum qu'il peut lever et ajuster la vis pour que le bypass empêche de lever plus. Je me doute que ce ne sera pas évident de trouver un poids calibré, quelque chose d'approximatif fera l'affaire du moment que ça ne dépasse pas la capacité du jack...
      J'espère que ça ira... 🙂👍

    I got one of those blue Michelin jacks almost identical to the one in your video. It's a couple of years old and was about to throw it out because it slowly drops after jacking up the car. No external leaks. After watching your video I decided to take a shot at taking it apart and re-building it. The oil was pretty dirty but I didn't find any bits of metal or see any visible damage. I cleaned all the parts, re-assembled everything and added fresh jack oil. No difference. It jacks up fine but then begins to drop slowly. Within a few minutes the lift arm is all the way down. Other than being Chinese junk, any idea what the problem is?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  Před 6 lety

      If it happens at at or near the maximum lifting capacity, possible that the limit valve needs a little adjustment, or if this isn't the problem also possible that the seat of one of the bearing ball that sreves as a valve leaks, this requires some cleaning and or resurfacing of that seat. Pierre's Garage thanks for the suggestions. I've disassembled it 3 times looking for the problem. All to no avail. It doesn't look like these cheap jacks were meant to be rebuilt. The seal on the end of the ram for example is not easy to replace as the metal pin holding the seal is pressed into the end. I'll probably just buy a new jack. Great video by the way..

      Hi Randy,
      The front end of the truck with some metal trash in the bed must be around 5000 pounds or a little less...
      This is a rather cheap built unit, I really think that 5000 pounds is kinda much for it, I got the 3 and a half tons version for about 15 years now, and, it's a way better unit, this one is going to be for sale cheap soon...
      Got to get back to you soon about the schedule... ;)

      It's going to be a first for us also, we are flying in from Montreal Canada, we booked rooms at Stan's hotel, not on his reservation, though... We went to the hotel's web site and reserved on our own, over 61 yo. rate was $97 a night, we got 3 nights there in order to do some visiting in the LA area...
      Check:
      Marriott Residence Inn Ontario Airport
      You can check with them, for availability and rates.
      Driving in from Oregon is a long drive, don't know exactly how many hours, but at least 12 to 15 hours drive non-stop drive... It would be at least 2 nights stay, camping is a solution.

      +pierre beaudry makes sense, thanks. When I lived in Denver, I had a little Toyota pickup. When it snowed, the bed would fill up, providing enough weight for traction. As the weather warmed up, the snow would melt.

    • @tom7601
      @tom7601 Před 8 lety

      +pierre beaudry: The Toyota was a 2-wheel-drive. I drove it through six winters with very little problems. In the Denver "Front Range" area, the snow didn't stick around very long because it would warm up enough to melt, plus, the humidity was so low, it's listed as an Alpine Desert, the snow melts and evaporates. I now live back in Southern California, north of San Diego and about three miles from the ocean. Other than working in Denver, this has been home since 1959.

      Here, snow is another story, we get more and it stays, although in the Montreal area, we consider ourselves lucky, cause if you go a little East and North ( Quebec City, or about 75 miles North) there is much more...
      The Atlantic provinces get boatloads of snow, I don't envy them at all...
      This is why here a 2WD pick-up truck is a no, no, I had one once and I was staying stuck everywhere...
      In all this my favorite season is, one with warmth and NO SNOW..... ;)

    Might think about building yourself a good micrometer bench vise Pierre. I bought the one Mitrutoyo makes but there pretty simple. They make it dead easy to measure small parts like you were doing with those balls. No need to hold the mike at all then.
    Wonder what Michelin gets for the Chinese slapping there name on that jack. I have one from Crappy Tire where if your close to the rated load the jack starts to rotate on the front wheels and would drop a car right on you. Piss poor design engineering on top of the lack of quality control. But we keep buying this junk they'll keep making it I guess.

    A jolt of electricity should be given to the factory workers who try and cut corners during manufacturing and assembly. I keep hearing from N American Companies telling us that they have quality control. Ya sure. You get what you pay for. Cheap steel and labor = piss poor products. From my experience with anything made in China, they do not believe in deburring or the clean assembly of anything they make, as you mentioned its a shame because it causes early failure of everything they produce and a big reason why they have a reputation for producing poor quality junk.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi David, by now, just about 95% of manufacturers have their stuff done in countries where labor is real cheap, even now China subcontracts in other countries, as an example Somalia is one of them.
      The problem is the quality control, the manufacturer has the last word on how much he wants to pay and the final quality of the product, this is where most of the time the fault resides...

Do you also have a Floor Of No Return with optional Tanslateral Displacement Warp? I was changing out a carbide insert and dropped the screw. It disappeared into a pile of screw shaped swarf then re-appeared under another bench 12 feet away. I spent more time on my knees than my sister at a football rally.

He talked funny afterwards and then mysteriously moved away and we never saw him again

    Your video is incredibly detailed and concise. Better than a training video. I'm going to try and repair mine as I've had it for so long that I can't bear to part with it.

    • @schifoso
      @schifoso Před 2 měsíci

      I ended up cleaning mine up and it didn't take much oil at all.
      When re-assembling, if you're having problem lining up the bottle jack part into the main assembly, you can lift up on the saddle and that will change the length of the whole assembly and make lining up a lot easier.
