- After I got a Michelin 2 1/2 tons defective floor jack, I decided to open it up and see what could be the problem, and, if possible, to fix it.
This shows that cleaning the parts before assembly makes sense...
Hope you enjoy...!

Best floor jack repair video on you tube ! Thanks
Hi John,
I'm very glad that you viewed and enjoyed, and, thanks for the nice comment, Pierre
Pierre, you have more patience than I have. My floor jack doesn't work very good either, after watching this I think I know why. However, rather than take it apart I'll buy a new one, maybe something made in Canada or the USA. Thanks.
Hi Darren,
Make certain that those US or Canadian companies don't subcontract parts in China, or, else you'll end up paying twice the price, and, be stuck to rebuild the jack anyhow... ;)
The task is like a couple of hours at most if not filming, though filming is a good guide for re-assembly.
Cheers, Pierre
is there ANYTHING manufactured in canada in past 15-20 years? stop complaining....seems without our "made in china" labels, we`d be fucked!! @@pierresgarage2687
You've got wonderful thing here.
Many years collecting tools...

I just subscribed to your channel and hello from New Hampshire usa.
HiPaul, welcome in and thanks for the sub, here about 30 minutes from Montréal Canada... 🙂🙂
I sincerely appreciate your colorful expressions of frustration and disgust. It takes me back to when I was a teen and hanging with the older guys trying to learn how to live. Occasionally, I recall something useful from that period, 1963 - 66, that I thought I'd lost while working on my scrap heap parked out front. I've incorporated the colorful language into my casual conversational banter, although not the tame words that you use in this presentation. The lack of quality in the production of materials from China that U.S. corporations market to us is disgraceful. Painfully obvious to all, but nonetheless vigorously denied by these corporations, their investors, sub-contractors, lackey employees and business men and women in general is the corruptive nature of our competitive economic system which is touted as a gift from on high by our economic "betters" and those who hope to exploit "the better angels of our nature" toward the advancement of their personal wealth.
Hi Rob,
The tamed words are special format just enough for keeping the videos in the General audience bracket... lol
Lots of people are giving too much importance to getting rich, for them being rich being money and wealth, I sincerely believe there is a better balance to it where kindness towards other humans and nature would occupy more place... Can't see the day it would happen, human nature being what it is, shown by the fact that history of civilisation being only narrated by the different series of wars and battles...... Sigh...!!!
Still dreaming for a change.
Thanks for comment, Pierre
....China....Well, I'm 69 and recall when nothing was imported from there except maybe fireworks.....Now.....occasionally I purchase something made in China, because no one else makes it...I'm always disappointed....like the Chinese hand crank (Sunbeam) can opener I bought a week ago...failed to even open 1 can...the Swingline hand crank unit I have is 35 years old still works OK, but it won't open the Chinese cans of sardines.....but works OK on all the others. I have a Walker 4 ton floor jack I got used in 1981....it was leaking oil, so I rebuilt it in about 1986...still works great, no leaks...US made...all steel, must weigh 200+ pounds....
I agree, when working with something made in China, you always gotta throw in a couple of "damn commies" comments in as well for some colorful flavor. My father in law does that all the time when working on something, it adds to the experience of working on something. He even threw it in when working on my old '71 Buick Skylark with a "they must have outsourced that part to the damn commies".
Very nice, Pierre. If I was doing this I would have multiple small project bowls like kitchen wear stainless for each section of dis-assembly. When re-assembly makes for quicker and easier cleaning and stuffing it all back together. Less stress and no headaches. Just saying, if it was me.
I've wanted to be organised all my life, lucky I got other qualities... Guess you noticed the general mess in the shop, yes it give me headaches... lol
This is where an assistant would be divine, for keeping the place organised, helping with camera works and for editing the videos, just daydreaming...!!! 😉
Thanks for comment, Pierre
Cool ass video man my Jack same thing as fullick scrap metal scratched up the boar and everything I have trouble getting that ball bearing out to write on
This shows that a great product should also include a serious quality control step...
Thanks for viewing and for comment, Pierre
Love the black hit man's gloves :-)
Pity you should have a defective item from new! Major break down in the end - quite a challenge. Nice load of parts once done - plenty of balls!
Seems crud was probably the problem - now all you have to do is reassemble. :)
Blackhandsvideo.... Lol
Wasn't totally new, but, with very little use... Tou rely on something like a known brand name, and even there you ge ripped off.............. GGGrrrrr....!!!
Good thing that there are video cameras for taking notes... ;)
Cheers, Pierre
Nice video
Good Video.
Hi, thanks for viewing and for comment, Pierre
Smart to video the dismanteling and call out the sizes and locations. To assemble you just run the video backwards.
This is exactly a good idea, was easier to re-assemble, sometimes the mind forget details, but, the camera remembers much better... ;)

ok i just checked mine is the 3 1/2 tons michelin, that leaks ,,,thanks pierre , cetais beau a voir .
Ici aussi j'ai un jack de 3.5 tonnes, presentement c'est celui que j'utilise régulièrement et il fonctionne toujours bien.... ;)
Merci pour le commentaire, Pierre
Pierre's Garage de rien sa me fait plaisir de floride je te remercie ,, i will get to mine soon just a leak it pumps fine they are heavy jacks to lift for sure . ok later
Nice Video
Hi James,
Thanks for taking the time to say you enjoyed, Pierre
Thanks, got mine stuck between muffler and metal boards
The part you removed at 10:40 is the part that is jammed on a seized old rusty jack I have. If I need to replace that, do they sell it separately?
Try this link:
www.blackhawkparts.com/
I don't remember what model it would correspond to, you may have to look out in their site or call them for some help, possible that a picture of the jack you show them would surely help.
Let me know how it turns out for you...
From my experience the Chinese never clean anything they make. Just put it together with whatever grinder dust and chips are still on the parts. Keep on keeping on.
That's their way of getting the trash out of the country, packed with the goods....!!!! "Et voila"
Thanks for visit, Pierre
hi pierre, i thank you for this demonstrating video, i just have a question about the name of the part you handle, it's a reservoir a piston ram and one direction valves inside of it but i dont know the name of the whole unit you handle.
great video thanks a lot
Hi,
I guess that we could call it a hydraulic bottle jack since it's exactly what it is, just actuating the rest of the hardweare so it lifts...
Thanks for comment, Pierre
Pierre's Garage i would just ask where can i find a spare part like this
Hi, Someone send me a link from this place selling parts for all kinds of jacks, I haven't tried it but they seem to have lots of available spare parts... Just let me know of your experience if ever deal with them.
Pierre
BADR HADRI so ,did you repaired your jack
Pierre my pump piston will not come back up on its own under the handle, what u think could be problem.
Maybe check if there is a spring in the bore that makes the piston come back up, possible it's broken or jammed, this is only a possible solution, possible you need to investigate more in order to find the problem...
Not only will they sell you semi finished tooling, but you can also buy new tools in need of a rebuild. :-)
You never know what you get, but, most the time, it's a bad surprise.... :(
my question is where do you get the proper parts , ? i have same brand just a little different the handle loosens and tightens up for lifting action is all . i bought mine from sams years ago on sale for something like in the 60's , or so . the book that came with it dont show jack shit that is usefulll . is why i am asking for where for correct parts , tabarnak on a plus les outils comme on avait avant . thanks
I wonder what happened to this comment, it was in the "held for review" section? Those cheaper tools don't come with schematics or so rarely... Since there is no complicated or very special parts to them it's pretty easy to find replacements just about anywhere, O rings and springs are the most common parts needing to be replaced, and McMaster will hold just most of them, it's also possible to look in specialised hydraulics suppliers catalogs to find more specific seals and glands around the piston...
For failures to steel or cast iron parts not too complicated for a machinist to produce the defective parts if proper tooling is available.
Thanks for comment, Pierre
Sometime people bought bad products and then always put all complains to the manufacturers. But all people lost sight of one important role that are those importers! Because manufacturers have to provide the products on the basis of requirement of the importers. If the quality of products that manufacturer made not meet the requirements of importers then they would impossible to take them, right? Actually the IMPORTERS have much power to make decisions that what kind of quality they need and how much they will pay to the manufacturers! So, why don't people to think about this? Or most of people don't know about this?
This case is more the manufacturer's fault for not cleaning properly the inside of the jact, in many case I willl agree with you the the main importer or the company that sub-contract will often lower their standards in order to pay the least possible money for something that isn't gonna be able to perform reasonnably well for a period of time, just like the tons of junk sold in Dollar Stores, most of that stuff is so low quality that it not even usable...
There is a read debate about the whole way the industry is making lots of products less durable...
@@pierresgarage2687 generally I don't think manufacturer not cleaning properly before assemble them but if the importer bargained too much maybe they will!
But actually most of hydraulic machine got ditty hydraulic fluid after use are normal.
I saw somebody fix his Japanese hydraulic floor jack from CZcams video that jack also outflow dirty hydraulic fluid.
11:41 czcams.com/video/mhAiAQKPgoY/video.html
The guy in your video used the jack for decades, as the one I fixed was only used a couple of times, and the particules I found were really some metal grits and some casting sand that got in the ball bearing valving system, the jack itself including the seals had just no wear....
Maybe it was one in the line-up that was flawed or badly cleaned, who knows....???
Hey I got the same jack and the swivel wheels broke office , they look like there made of all steel, I need to replace them, I can't find where to buy them, wondering if you know or anyone else knows that same model......
Do you think the wheel could be repaired somehow...???
Try this if they can help you:
www.blackhawkparts.com/parts-breakdowns.html
This link shows where it comes from:mvphk.company.weiku.com/item/Mechanical-speedy-lift-floor-jack-19635243.html
where can i find this jack brand new? please and thank you
Hi Anthony,
Depends where you are located, I think that in Canada it could be available at Canadian Tire if it's still in their catalog, there might also be other sources with the same product labeled with a different name. Since this jack is over 10 years old it may not be made anymore... ???
Thanks for comment, Pierre
the blue thing would not stay up??
they have pills for that now, good for up to 4 hrs...
i go away for 6 days and you produce 3 video's
nice job my friend
it makes me want to take apart my new 20T jack before i put it into service
Blue pills, hum...!!!
Guess who keeps me busy normally.... ???? The Newbie..... lol
Hope you can get it back together, Bah...! I'll help you...
Good to have you back............ ;)
If his thing is turning blue, he needs to let off the pressure. :O
The bigger the car the bigger the pill... lol
Cool
This is where we discover how slacking on quality effects us... ;)
Thanks for comment, Pierre
I still haven't watched the assembly yet Pierre. I'm looking forward to that. Thanks

Hi, glad you enjoyed, thanks for nice comment, Pierre
Hi Pierre !
I'm sure this long screwdriver with the yellow handle is a danish brand - right ?
Hope you took some notes ... I didn't ... so you have to de the assambly on your own ... and no crying if you can't di it !
HI Keld,
This video is the note on the re-assembly...
Think that screwdriver is an Xcellite brand tool, don't know where it's made, this tool is at least 30 years old...
Cheers, Pierre
(Haven't installed Skype yet)
pierre beaudry
Yeah, the screwdriver is old - I have a lot of these old ones too - they are danish made - I'll see if I can find some "name" on mine.
Skype ... I think it's brillant - voice and video !
TV repairmen call those "long thins" as in "Hand me that long thin." I have several, of different (but long) lengths. (And yes, made by Xcelite, which is now (I think) part of the Irwin Group.) Mine date from the late '60s or early '70s when I was fixing televisions.
The advantage of very long-shafted screwdrivers is that you can spin the shaft between your fingertips for fast screw removal and replacement. If you have to do it all day, turning the handle with your wrist you can get pretty sore.
The progression from taking notes and making drawings, to taking lots of pictures with either a digital camera or smart-phone, to making a video *with commentary* has been a revolution in one-off repairs. If you get trained and do hundreds of repairs on the same item, it's one thing, but pulling apart some unfamiliar object (and then getting interrupted for anything from a few minutes to many days) really needs this kind of documentation.
Got those screwdrivers, just like you, in my being an electronic technician era (ended in 1991), got lots of Xcelite tools then and still have it...
Good thing I filmed the dismantling, helped a lot on re-assembly... ;)
Thanks for comment, Pierre
If they build there missiles like that we have nothing to worry about.
You're putting forward a good point here.... Those whatever they launch will fall on their own heads, or, maybe they leave the crap only into the stuff they export.... :|
Thanks for comment, Pierre
Lls lmao
I will just go buy a new hell wit dis
You do know the father the Chinese space and rocket program was MIT and CIT researcher and professor on par with Wernher von Braun. Their rocker program maybe better than what we have plus the stolen technology given away by the Clintons for paid put us in a disadvantage. Rockets impossible to defend, stolen stealth tech making their planes and submarines impossible to detect. Plus we don't have harden infrastructure against EMI and EMP. The last few decades we have transferred wealth, technology, production and manufacturing to China. Does not help when couple of Chinese universities on par with MIT and maybe even better in contrast with our young kids at the lowest test scores in math and science.
what magic did you use at your convincing station to get the top nut off?
I used a pipe wrench and a long cheater bar, sometimes you need to use the extreme strength method... ;)
I made the mistake to mess with the adjusting screw under the red cap and now I don't know how is adjusted
I don't have this jack anymore and if my memory is fine one is for the max pressure adjust and the other one is for the fast motion adjust, you need to make it lift on the fast motion with not much more than a couple of pounds then it transfers to the slow lift part with the higher pressure.... Hope it make sense to you...
Got it to work again. I top it off with jack oil and purged the air out and its working. thanks for the video it helped a lot
Thanks for feedback, glad it worked... ;)
Looks like our rotund cheery Michelin man has developed blocked arteries from carrying round all that excess weight!
Hi Ray,
Good one, blocked with metal scrap... :))
Thanks for comment, Pierre
I need a convincing station...
Hi, who doesn't... ??? lol
Thanks for comment, Pierre
Sorry couldn't stop laughing..
Just done replacing a suspension part, car sitting on two jack stands, went with the hydraulic jack to put the car back on the ground... no lifting. Hey ho
Yay...!!! I'd be curious to have your opinion about jack stands related to safety right now... lol
Hard to get a better lesson and stil be alive to talk about it, great that you're safe... ;)
Thanks for viewing and taking time to leave a comment, Pierre
Why is it that basically that product looks well made, but the oil that came out was the colour of something from a car engine after 10,000 miles, how many up / down lifts does it take to make it go that colour? or do they put shite oil / chemicals whatever in , so it will degrade the seals and whatnot on purpose, so that you have to buy a new one because you cant get replacement seals?
Didn't need a seals replacement, the oil was contaminated with debris from a lousy cleaning of the casting.
Worked great after rebuild, used it for a while and sold it, can't say if it's still working but I'm not worried about that, those work a long time when proper care is taken...
thanks for viewing and for comment, Pierre
Working now?
+Dario Julies . Sold it a while after it was fixed, but worked well until then...
Thanks for your comment, Pierre
Next time your in the states just pick one up at harbor freight for $29 bucks with a 20% off coupon:-)
This jack was given to me as a defective unit, I was more curious to find out what caused the problem than to get a functioning unit, for 15 to 20 years I've been using a 3.5 tons unit and it works great...
At 29$ I'm running the chance of getting another rebuilt.... ;)
Thanks for comment, Pierre
The piece you call a bottle jack actually called a hydraulic piston.
As you probably discovered, my first language is French and I still need to refine some English expressions or words, always appreciate some good input... Cheers..... 😉👍
lol have you ever check the fluid level first?
Oh ya...!!! The oil level was all right, it really was scraps of metal that was causing the issues by blocking open some of the ball bearing valves.
To my knowledge, the jack is still doing great... ;)
Thanks for comment, Pierre
It's pretty obvious that this video was more than just about how to get the jack working or quick fixes. This guy was examining all the mechanisms properly with the correct tools. Something of which you are lacking knowledge of. I also believe you have done a similar video, in which you fixed a floor jack by just checking the fluid level? Lol.
I would have 1st popped off the rubber fill plug in the cylinder and filled it with hyd oil.
So that's what they do with old crankcase oil in China.
Hi Robert,
That and everything else they don't need...
Thanks for commant, Pierre
I always wondered what was inside el cheapo Chinese floor jacks. It must be said I have a couple, one is 30 years old and works well with the occasional refill. I should start trying to find myself an old Hein Werner to put in the garage. Hope you're enjoying the weather. Cheers.
If you ask me me preference as for weather, 3 seasons would be more than enough, NO WINTER, to cold... ;)
The main problem with Chinese stuff is that the American or European companies that have the tools sub-contracted always pressure the Chinese to lower the prices, and, that's exactly what they do by cutting corners round...
And you spent good money for this junk(not the boat).
Someone else spent the money, got it just cause it wasn't working...
Now it works, but, should work the first time, though...
Thanks for comment, Pierre
I bought this jack from Canadian tire. Already failed after a 30 to 40 uses. Pretty disappointed as Michelin us known for good tires and I always spoke highly of the brand . Definitely won't be buying a jack from Canadian tire again.
Canadian Tire got some good stuff and also the bad stuff, hard to really be sure of what is what, I've heard from a reliable source that they get the big brand names to supply them with regular "Looking" products downgraded to be able to put a lower priced sticker on the product... This is a lame practice in my eyes, and, I'm quite certain they're not the only ones doing it...
This is where good serious reviews are a good source of information to look for before purchasing...
Thanks for your input, PIerre
If you paid yourself minimum wage, your labor could have bought a quality jack !!!
The jack ended up being sold for about $25, not getting rich with this kind of repairs... lol
Finding out why something failed...... Priceless...!!! ;)
its painful to watch this guy.
Great to see you made it until it got to be painful... ;)
Guess there is better and there is worse, so, I know I got to try harder....
