- Welcome to Subaru School with Tyson the Subaru Specialist! In this lesson I will teach you how to disable the drivers seatbelt chime. Subaru built in a way to disable the chime and I find that it's exceptionally loud and intrusive even when I'm just moving vehicles around the lot!
There are a multitude of reasons that you may want to disable the chime.
If you have an idea that you'd like to see covered in a future Subaru School Lesson, please put it in the comments below and I'll do my best to cover it!

Interesting. I have no need to disable it, but good to know.

Just picked up a loaded Outback Touring XT.
Thanks for the sub! There may come a time in your life when you'd like to disable it. Hopefully my video is helpful in that situation. Congrats the Outback!
Thanks worked on my 23 crosstrek sport after trying three times.
Excellent! I'm glad to hear that it worked!
Awesome I found this on my 06 outback and instantly did my 2014 Forester ! Best thing ever 😎🙉
Glad my video could help!
Good video. Any chance you know of a way to reduce the sensitivity of the car alarm (or temporarily disable it) for riding BC Ferries? 2024 crosstrek.
Thank you for watching!
Unfortunately, I do not know of a way to disable or reduce the sensitivity. Your local dealership may be able to change it in the background settings that technicians have access to.
Thank you!!!
@@joshoppie1 welcome!
THANK YOU!!
Welcome!
I've done this on my 2012 Forester but now I have a 2019 Outback and I'm struggling with the push start if I go over 20 is that still going to work
I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with it this time. I've never tried to do it more than 20 times, so I can't confirm.
You are pressing the start button x2 when you first start the process, right?
Outstanding Tyson! Thank you, now if you can show me how to “DISABLE DRIVER MONITORING” permanently as I have to do this every time I start my 2023 Outback XT - that would be absolutely awesome!💯🤩👍🏽👍🏽
If I figure out a way to do that, I'll do a short video on it!
It currently stays off in the other vehicles that I've tested it in, but I don't have a 2023 Outback available to test on.
@@TysonTheSubaruSpecialist looking forward to seeing your video on this Tyson💯🤩👍🏽
This is the real deal. I did this to my 2024 outback and it worked. You will need to do this again if you remove the battery.
Of course it's the real deal!
I'm not going to add something not true to my Subaru School series!
So it remembers the setting?
@@michaelking42 it remembers until the battery is depleted/other memory functions are forgotten.
@@TysonTheSubaruSpecialist Thanks mate!
@@michaelking42 anytime!
by deactivating this.. does it just deactivate the chime or does it also deactivate the safety functions from turning off as well?
The chime stops, but I've never had any other safety related features turn off with the chime.
I have 2024 outback touring XT. Chime was super annoying. I succeeded first attempt ! Passenger side is off, too. 😊
Glad to hear that you got it on the first attempt!
I have a question. My whole system went wonky in my ‘24 Crosstrek. Turns out it might have been downloading an update. When I got the notification to install the update, I pressed it and the install failed. Will it try to update again?
It should try to update again at some point.
@@TysonTheSubaruSpecialist thank you. Hopefully not while I’m driving this time.
It works!!! 2nd try 😎🥳🥳🥳
Awesome! Glad that it worked for you!
I can finally make Tinker Bell shut up(I name my cars).
Awesome!
On my 2024 Impreza, the initial lower volume seat belt chime is okay, however the second round is much louder. What is even more interesting, is that I set the car to P and set parking brake, the chime is still going, but why?!
It's really driving home the point that you need to buckle up. That's why I make these videos - the second, more intense chime, drives me nuts.
@@TysonTheSubaruSpecialist I usually open mailbox in my apartment and just drive 150 feet to the destination. I don't know at what speed it starts to chime louder, but I don't seem to drive fast at all, maybe 7 mph.
@Charkatak 10km/hr +. Disable the chime and you'll be golden. It's a time vs speed thing.
4x… not yet working. Is this legit for a 2024 Outback?
Yes, it's legit. I just went and confirmed in a 2024 Outback that it works.
Is this a permanent thing? Or does it have to be done after each time starting out on a drive. When my wife and I are driving, she (in the passenger seat), sometimes unclicks her seat belt to reach for something in the back of the car. She then quickly puts the seat belt back on. The chiming is very annoying. If I use this method, will I hear any chiming when she does this?
Nope, it's a permanent thing. You'd have to do it on her seat and see if it stops the chime the same way that it does for the drivers side.
If you disabled it, how could you reverse it like engage the chime again?
Unhook the battery negative terminal for 20 minutes, and it will reset everything back to factory standards.
@@TysonTheSubaruSpecialist ok thanks. My 2021 forester when you turn on the engine the seatbelt warning light driver side comes on for a few mins but when I drive and remove seatbelt no chime.
Wish you could turn off the chime for rear seats as the two 55 lbs poodles even though they are buckled sometimes set it off. It is annoying.
I agree! I wish that there was a way to stop the rears from chiming. I haven't found a way to stop it, yet.
THIS! Rear is super annoying.
how do you turn it back on?
Unhook your battery for 15-20 minutes.
Thanks,@@TysonTheSubaruSpecialist.
@@vypir313 welcome!
Didnt work on my 2006 subaru sti
It's worked in every Subaru I've tested it in, even a 2000 Forester the other week. Never tried it in a JDM one, though.
How long will it stay off?
Until you reverse the process and re-enable the chime, or you change the battery/the battery is depleted and systems go back to default.
I wish there was way to turn off the auto start/stop permanently.
@@AJSparacio413 at least it's on the main screen and not hidden in 3 different menus
You can buy devices that allow you to do that.
@@michaelking42 pretty sure he ment as an option from factory.
If I can do it 30 times in 30 seconds, will it give me 10 extra horsepower. 😊
Shhhhh! 🤫
Not bothered by the noise for the driver, it's when I have to buckle my groceries, my pizza box or my pocketbook registering as a person, which destroys my desire to ever own a subaru again
@@JanineGioBella I can't say that I've ever had a pizza box or pocket book set off the occupant sensor.
Hold the red button in while you click and unclick it shuts passenger seat too but not rear seats.
This video was probably meant for April Fool's Day :)
Why's that?
@@TysonTheSubaruSpecialist wait... you mean this is a real thing????
@DIYManiacJohnP I wouldn't include a joke video in my "Subaru School" series. It does indeed work.
Or you could wear your seatbelt ?
Spoken as someone that clearly doesn't have a gate to access/exit their own property or has a post box just down the street from them.
Subaru installed the option to turn it off, they clearly see a reason to be able to disable it.
This method shuts off all the belt sensors in 2:00 My sti
Oh really? It does not do that in any of the other Subarus that I've tested it in.
