Wish you did more videos, they are so good, informative and I learn so much and I've been collecting records since 1964! Keep at it! 😀
Awsome! Keep em spinning, bro/sis!
He is old , and enjoying his records
Michael, your youthfulness, vitality, energy, high intelligence, and expansive life experience is motivating and inspiring to someone a lot younger than you and has trouble finding meaning in life from day to day.
I agree with the assumption of the Beetles bringing hope to a shattered nation.
I was in the hospital when the boys were on Sullivan, getting last rights from a priest 3 times in two weeks.
I was seven years old, jumping up and down in my hospital bed when they came on.
My Mom always said it was then when she knew I’d recover.
Thanks to the boys!
Unlike most, I had heard the Beatles well before the Ed Sullivan appearance. My cousin had seen them play a club near London and said the were the best part of her trip. She also said they were on the BBC often, so I built a short wave radio to receive the BBC. I think it was the BBC WORLD SERVICE we were able to tune into.
I’m still broken hearted about the murder of out President, but the Beatles arriving did lift the dark clouds and brought a great deal of joy to a 11 year old boy!
Peace,
DrRick
As usual a great video Michael! You are one of my top 3 on CZcams that I go to when I want comprehensive information regarding Vinyl and just music and equipment in general. I enjoy the extra little bits of historical insight that you include as well such as what you did for this Let It Be album. Thanks for doing these types of videos!
Totally agree, also Norman maslov's show is also great.
So interesting hearing your thoughts! Next I want to hear the story of how you ended up setting up Brian Wilson’s turntable!!
Thank you Michael. loved the presentation and the stories!
Well. That was the best CZcams video I have ever watched. Great stories, great info and a fountain of knowledge. Thank you very much.
Great stuff, as always. Thank you Michael !
As soon as this box was announced, I thought to myself "i can't wait to see what Fremer says about it"..... Thank you for the review!
It wouldn't be a fremer review unless it's got some corny jokes and a few non-PC points of view. ha! But that's what keeps me coming back.
Another great one from Michael! Love your clips man. You are like a kinder, gentler Ken. Hahahahaha! I kid I kid. Love you both.
Michael, have been hoping you would make a vid about this Let It Be release. Loved it (as usual). Thank you and all the best!
who are you , and i don't make videos
Thank you fir putting the granular info we wanted and your hearts feelings.
Not untouched.
Very grateful
Always enjoy your videos Michael..thanks for this
As usual a highly insightful and informative review.
Thank You Michael. Stellar video. Nobody does this like You!! So much information very candidly presented. I had a great time watching this video. So much Real information. You killed it!!
Nice editing with the pictures in the book. Much appreciated!
Amazing ! Always great stories and review!!
Due to covid impacting my income I wasn't going to buy this box set. But then I thought about something you said in one of your videos, along the lines of "Life is short & unpredictable, have fun."
So I decided bugger it I'll buy it. It's a great box for sure. And this represents what this great group did in ONE month!
Outstanding! Loved your stories at the end.
Peace,
DrRick
Michael, such a delight to hear your stories. As a “youngster” in my forties, it is fascinating to hear a first hand account of what it was like when this was all going down. What a time to be alive!
Very informative and entertaining look at the box. Thanks!
Thanks for the detailed review and great stories!
I agree with the quality of the LPs / pressings. Thank you for a wonderful tour of this historic box set.
Great job! Love the stories.. Thank you my friend .
Great video, love your stories and insight!
Listening to your banter and wit offers the best explanation of why I love vinyl. Most of my treasures come from estate & garage sales anymore but admit to purchasing the new Beatle pressings. I was on the fence a bit on Let It Be but am heading to Discogs now to salivate-and order. Thanks!
Thanks for bring that up, Michael! I grew up in the '60s and '70s and try telling people how rare images of the Beatles were before John Lennon's death in 1980. Usually, the only poster you saw on peoples wall was the White Album poster, and the photos were the White Album photos were generally the only pictures you saw. In the late '70s Capitol included a 24"x24" folded poster of the 'Let it Be' album cover with LPs.There were exceptions with headshop posters (which were often sepia toned) and a few blacklight posters, but they were rare. Then with John's death and the flood of memorial magazines came an explosion of Beatles posters. The first one I remember seeing was the photo from "Beatles For Sale" LP, and it was HUGE, like 60"X40". This was also the era when you first started seeing the Parlaphone records in shops. I was the first person I knew with Parlaphone Beatles records and that was Christmas of '79. I'm not saying they weren't available, but they were just not sold in record departments of major stores like Sears, JC Penny, K-Mart until then. Maybe some big city record stores had them but they really didn't become widely available until '79-'80, and after John's death.
I have the utmost respect for you sir! I learn so much from your videos, and your comic background is pure gold! I got into serious collecting because of you, and I've paid it forward to a couple more people! I've been collecting since 2017, and I've gotten so much pleasure from vinyls hi resolution sound since! In short(😒) Thank you Michael fremer!
Michael is quite amazing
Enjoy his work
You are best reviewer on the Analogue Planet and on the Digital Planet too 🤗 Best Wishes from Northern Scotland
Thank you Michael.
"With the Beatles" was released in the UK on the same day…in 1963.
Great video! You should do more videos off your stories around releases? Really enjoyed it.
Very informative, Sir.
BTW, did you review that Newvelle records box set on the shelf behind you?
Great review! You've persuaded me to buy the vinyl box. However, I can't believe they didn't take this opportunity to release a full, unedited stereo mix of "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)!"
Totally.
Before you spend your money you need to watch the Vinyl Richie Let It Be review.
Killer review, thanks michael!
Love watching you talk Beatles. In fact I just like watching you talk.
He escuchado la historia de principio a fin. Me encanta que aun queden tipos como tu pasando este legado a las nuevas generaciones (tengo 50). Amazing story and analisys.
Fantastic video - from best vinyl/music channel on CZcams - thank you. 🙏 😊
Excellent video enjoyed hearing your thoughts and comments on the timeline re- the White album,Abby Road and Let it be. I’m gonna be picking up the vinyl set as per your comments. As a first generation Beatles fanI was lucky enough to see the Beatles live in 64 65 and 66 at Mapleleaf Gardens in Toronto Canada. Boy I’m getting old. I also enjoy reading your essays on analogue Planet. All the best in the future keep up the great work take care David.
Enjoyed this video. I think you should get back in the saddle and do more if these on a regular basis.
Thanks Michael.
I read an article in late spring of 1969 about what the writer said would be the next Beatles album. Calling the album Get Back, he listed a number of song titles that I of course was excited to be reading, She Came in Through the Bathroom Window, Octopus's Garden, Dig a Pony, Don't Let Me Down, Polytheme Pam, etc. So when Abbey Road was released later the year I thought, what happened to all the other songs I read about? I distinctly remember being somewhat mystified.
Later, in 1970 I came across the book version of Let It Be as shown in this video. No one else I knew had it or even knew such a slipcase book version existed until they saw my copy.
The story here is fascinating and I'd almost be tempted to buy the new edition so as to read the story about how it came about. What holds me back is I've never enjoyed the album as a whole. I love some of the songs but it remains my least favorite Beatles album. But I have heard some of the Beatles conversations hashing out what they really wanted to do about playing live and do with the songs. I heard this on "Pop Goes the 60s," here on CZcams. The conversation made it sound as if they may not have been actually trying to make a new album at the beginning of 1969, but simply wanted to film a TV show of the Beatles playing live.
Soundstage/Imaging;
Mikey solidly front center, intermittent pump(?) off to the right side... perhaps in the mechanical/utility room.
Jokes aside, thanks for this.
The content is always appreciated... re., vinyl, you're a national treasure.
Fantastic stories. Thanks for the video
Love the stories Michael.
BTW Michael: I forgot to mention how much I love your show!
Have you read “Recording the Beetles”? it comes in a sleeve identical to a 1” master tape reel box and includes tons of pictures I’d never seen before. It details every recording session all the equipment used and how the double tracking and mix-downs were done on two 4 track recorders.
It was a very expensive Christmas gift I received from a recording engineer client of mine.
Peace,
DrRick
Great Video!!!
I love your videos and yours stories, very informative
Superb book like that and turning pages from the bottom near the spine. Come on Michael.
Stumbled upon your channel after searching for Let it be, love your channel sir! Would like to hear stories about hey Jude album, not sure if I remember correctly something of a controversy. Thank you
interesting video, as always. Are you experiencing any distortion on the Glyn Johns LP, or any other track? some guys are reporting it, personally I can't hear nothing of the sort
Dude, happy to see you healthy and lucky to own all that master-pieces !!!
Always been a huge fan of your videos Michael! I know it has nothing to do with vinyl but I'd love to hear your thoughts about the new Get Back documentary if you've had time to watch it.
Awesome review. I wonder how the next 'Let It Be' box will look like
Great Information. big Beatles fan.. my favorite group of all time. i can read just about anything on them. i did enjoy your video.
wow yes Everly brothers, i remember looking back at them in 1983, and enjoyed their singles, as an 11 year old then , my parents loved them as it was their era ! during a uk TV interview about that time 1983 , an interviewer asked one of the Everly brothers " What clothes did you buy ? thinking that they would slash out on fab clothes the answer was " A suit like my dad "
It really is remarkable that the it was just 7 years from Please Please Me to Let It Be. I'm looking forward to the extended documentary on Disney. I saw the original short version with my father many many years ago
I was a pro musician in South Africa in those years and I bought the Let it Be album the day it came out. British imported pressing with the book.
The book, however, was titled Get Back and I knew then that Abbey Road was probably after that but released first.
This proved to be correct as later news surfaced that there were various legal issues which had to be overcome due to Let it Be having been produced by Phil Spector and this led to a delay in the release of the album. To fill the gap, EMI, the British label, released an album called The Beatles with tracks such as Ballad of John and Yoko, Old Brown Shoe, Lady Madonna etc. This album came out in January 1970 and today seems something of a rarity. I still have my original Let it Be book release, Abbey Road, The White Album and The Beatles, together with another 15 or so Beatles albums which I bought in South Africa as they were released.
A truly wonderful 6 or 7 years of of memories and tribute to a group that utterly redefined music and songwriting for ever !!
Thank you for your input !
That was great, I enjoyed your review. Your right the Ed Sullivan performances are terrific as well as the Anthology series. I enjoy hearing the demos as much as the original released versions. I was surprised by how good the newest red double album 62-66 sounds compared to the copy I bought in the late seventies. I thought they did a great job with that one. I’d never heard these songs sound that lively with bass.
And those reissues were from analog tape
Another interesting and amusing review.
I was curious if your original white album (shown in the video) was mono or stereo? As you are impressed with the sound quality I wondered which you preferred.
If it was the general US release, it had to be stereo, as Capitol ceased manufacturing mono starting in 1968. For many years, US fans who wanted mono White Albums had to obtain them as imports.
First video of yours I'm seeing, and I love your vibe, you're like a mix of my uncles, but Americanized (I'm Brazilian) 👌👌👌
Best reviews anywhere.
so cool! Thanks for your inout insight and suggestions. and I completely agree. I want to hear those original pressings so badly, but just absolutely do not have the money for it if I could even find any. completely agree why wouldn't they? but I think they should start with Rubber Soul or Help! and do every album after. That would babe incredible.
In the USA ,did they have the Canadian or the UK version in stores ?The thing I hate about the box set (Canadian) is that the pages in the book often fall out.I have at least 8 of the box sets.
Let It Be was the first record I ever bought
Born in 1958 was a little young for the Beatles
Such a masterpiece
came here for your thoughts on the remix I stayed for those stories, thanks!
Dear Michael, loved the video, so good to have such a great sounding vinyl boxset, after all the poor sounding bootlegs! Just one point, the title Get Back has nothing to do with 'geting back to playing live' it has a much darker meaning, if you heard the Black Album you would know what Get Back is actually referring too. I'd happily write an article about it, if you are interested.
Great video! So you said one box is analog and one is digital. But aren’t they both from the digital files? I agree with what you said at the end, they need to get the original tapes out and release those to true analog.
Hey Michael, thanks for putting the bug in Jeff Jones's ear about analogue stereo LP's. Regardless of what he told you he KNOWS they will sell.
Mike, please do whatever you can with whatever pull you have and beg Apple or whoever to either release a Stereo all analog set as you speak of, or PLEASE do another run of the analog Mono box. I missed out on the 2014 Mono run (have an early Blue Box Stereo UK) and with my health not going to allow me live long enough to see re release of it, if they ever do. I'd happily pay well for either. I do have both new LIB sets and love them so much. Thanks for sharing your stories, they are great!
Great memory~ Sir!
26:40 - Great story.
I bought both the vinyl boxed set and the CD boxed set. Plus, I also got several copies of the different exclusive edition and the regular LP edition. Here's what I found:
The vinyl boxed set was pressed at Optimal Media in Germany. Because I suspect that Optimal uses an inferior quality of vinyl which we don't use in North America, I have found the Optimal pressing to have a rumble or excessive surface noise. Atleast all the records were centered correctly and were flat with no warps. I mention this because the "White Album", in the 2LP format, was pressed by QRP in the U.S., and I went through 4 copies and couldn't get a copy that was centered correctly and the LP2 had warps and the tone arm acted like it was on the ocean. The vinyl quality was great but the production quality was lacking. I ended up getting the boxed set, pressed by Optimal, and got flat properly centered records. Again, with the Optimal pressings, they had the excessive surface noise.
The single black vinyl pressing was pressed by GZ's Precision Record Pressing in Canada and was a higher quality than I am used to with QRP pressings. It sounded great and has much less surface noise than the Optimal pressings.
When the "Let It Be" album was released in the U.S. in 1970, there was a bootleg LP "Get Back To Toronto". This album was closer to the intended "Get Back" album rather than the "Let It Be" album. The "Get Back To Toronto" album used raw tape mixes and nothing had been added to them with no overdubs or noise reduction, like the Spector versions.
The CD boxed set is great. The CD's were manufactured by GZ in the CZ Republic and are great.
A correction about the books included with both boxed sets, although the material inside is the same, the books are NOT the same. The book in the vinyl box is larger and the covers are glossy. The book in the CD box is smaller and the covers have a matte finish.
If you have the money, I recommend buying the boxed sets. For the "Let It Be" album a later audiophile version of the original mix is just fine, such as what came in the earlier stereo box. The "New" mix went by the mixing notes of the Phil Spector version, but the "New" mix is tweaked a little. The best thing about these new "Let It Be" boxes are the books that came with them. But, the fancy version of the book can be purchased separately an retails for $60. Buy the 2CD version and the book and you will save $100. and get as much Beatles as you could ever want.
Thank you so much for adding all of that. Yes the book in the CD box is a somewhat smaller format of necessity by “same” I meant content.
@@AnalogPlanet Thankyou for getting back to me, I appreciate it! I look forward to your reviews and videos, but sometimes I don't agree. I have been collecting recorded media for over 60 years and have an electronics background, at a professional level. So I can tell what I am hearing and some of the whys. Thank you again!
Man, I completely agree with you!!!! 👍
My Christmas gift.
We need videos more often Michael. Very good insight to records.
Another solid video. Haven’t seen you do the reissues of Goats Head and Tattoo You
Won't be doing "Tatoo You". I heard it's way over-compressed. Someone posted somewhere that it sounded as if it was encased in a bar of soap! Just get a Bob Ludwig RL mastered copy and you're done!
I still have my original Let It Be boxed set although it hasn't been played for a decade or two.
1985, Harvard Square is where my collection (my infatuation) began. Oh all those stores!!! Looney Tunes, Second Coming, Mystery Train, Newbury, The Coop, etc.
Hey Analog! You can rip them into your pc! Just have to de-HDCP the disc and convert. It does require tinkering but I did just this same task, so lmk if you need help!
Great stories as always! That is wild how the demand for the original Let it Be release was so sparse.....really.... had to give them away for $5 to move inventory🤔😯 Still on the fence to purchase this one...not one of my favorites and my original German pressing seems suffice...for now at least
You need to watch the Vinyl Richie Let It Be review.
Well, guess I’m old but I don’t have to get a dvd of EdSullivan show, I lived it. I still have my Beatle albums, saw them at the Hollywood Bowl, and Dodger Stadium. My first album was Meet The Beatles… great time to be a teen, great music by great bands. I was lucky to see a few of the really big bands….Hahahahaha, and my grandmother said they wouldn’t last…
Great video Michael. For a Beatles 101 primer I highly recommend The Beatles: The Biography by Bob Spitz. Excellent read.
That guy that wrote about Reagan and you're recommending him!!!??? Seriously?
The Warners Golden Hits LP are not re recordings but Hit/single 45's issued and recorded for Warner Bros.
I walk around with the WHITE ALBUM T-SHIRT aka just a plain white t-shirt
Love your stories and video's Michael. Your knowledge is encyclopedic. Unreal. Quick question. I'm 54 and started to collect vinyl again. I've kept just about everything I've bought new in the "shrink". Is that okay? (to preserve the value) or could it damage the vinyl long term leaving it on. Your advice would be appreciated. Thx, Evan
Seriously? How on earth could the shrink wrap damage the vinyl? Unbelievable question.
@@apollomemories7399 Hey 👋 I love ❤️ your personality and how you roll. Great 👍 response Michael. But for instance, I ordered U2 Joshua Tree 30 anniversary. When it arrived, the shrink was so tight (probably on for years) it was damaged. And obviously the tightness caused may have it? Also, I’m sure you’ve heard, or I teach my kids there are no bad questions. But I respect you and enjoy all your stories. Keep punching 🥊 😊. Evan
@@evanshear5378 Hi, I'm not Michael, nor pretending to be.
Put it this way - obviously if the shrink was too tight it may very well cause warping problems, but you'll be the judge of that. If otherwise the shrink is not too tight then you won't experience any problems. Basically, it's down to common sense - of which there ain't no rules or recipe.
@@apollomemories7399 the reply. I appreciate the advice.
Michael, thx for the excellent review on the Abbey Road Box set, fantastic stories of you back in Cambridge.
But the question I have, purchased to different sealed copies of Zeppelin 45rpm Stairway to Heaven test pressings months ago.
One from Clarity vinyl and the other from RTI. Have you compared the two or will you review the two to see if there is any substantial difference.
Eventually I will send them off to Perfect vinyl forever to be professionally cleaned.
hope to hear back from you.
thank you
Since these are no longer "in print" I'm not sure there's a point to reviewing. I have the black vinyl as RTI test pressings and they sound incredible (I've played them at shows and they get standing ovations!). Don't know about the Clarity versions probably pressed at Bill Smith
@@AnalogPlanet so maybe 1A and 1B ?
If they re-released the Mono box set at a higher price (but much, MUCH less than they’re selling for now of course) I’d buy it in a heartbeat. I have UK Mono first pressings of their catalogue but they’re not all the best sounding versions. They’re great and FAR superior to the US but some were definitely topped by the 2014 Mono box. Keep begging them to re-release it. Thank goodness the Mono Masters 3LP was repressed and I snagged one. It’s absolutely incredible.
I see the Vinny G Charlie Brown's Christmas :) It's one of my favorite Christmas albums .
I got the deluxe vinyl set and played it back to back with the original US pressing and although I noticed differences in the remix I didn’t like it more or better. Yet I don’t hate it by any means either. Kind of an apples & oranges thing for me.
(It's always interesting to note how quickly one can distinguish an american music collector from an English music collector.)
The Beatles White album release date was purely mercenary! Just before Thanksgiving, Christmas season.!!! I was in the record business. It was a smart move!
I think the result of the Beatles assuaging a nation was an afterthought. I was 8 in February 1964. I had actually heard the Beatles in late 1963- my older sister played them - and cried over them too!
11/22/1968 was a Friday, which was the typical day of the week for record releases back then. And about a month before Christmas, as you point on. You’re right. White Album’s release date had nothing to do w/observing JFK’s assassination.
Perhaps it was noted somewhere else in the comments, but 'With The Beatles' was originally released on November 22, 1963, which by unfortunate chance across the pond, was the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated. As mentioned previously, the late November date was typically chosen by record companies to get new groups and singles out for the Christmas season.
Wonder how much weight there are in vinyl records in that room. Is it fun to move to another apartment with it?
As always, though and very entertaining. Doc BC
You should have been an excellent history teacher!
I agree!!! I would sell a Kidney for a pure Analog Master of anything Beatles!!! I love your Stories!!
In Sweden my mother told me they gave the book away for free at NK the main department store in Stockholm. And she did not take one :(
When are you coming to the UK again Analogue Planet Man? I would absolutely love to come to one of your appearances. I really really would. I can't afford the high end equipment you have and just have a very modest Technics hi-fi SH-EH790 with a BUSY MTT1 turntable which is apparently the only BUSH turntable they ever got right with a 5 star review from I believe WHAT HI-FI magazine and yeah it's sound is acceptable but my God I would love to hear the beautiful sounds you present.
November 22, 1968 was also the five year anniversary of the With the Beatles LP.
I didn’t know that!
Agree that the UK 1st press of Abbey Road -2/-1 matrix is the absolute BEST sounding version of the album there has never been topped. I lucked out and picked one up years ago unknowingly at a thrift store and it blew me away as I was used to the US. It was a little rough but still sounded amazing. I’ve since upgraded to a nicer copy but still have that one.
Also, I got the LP LIB box set and I absolutely love it! Agree with everything you said.
That was LUCKY!
