Examining The John Lennon "Imagine" Box Set Deluxe and 2 LP Set

  • AnalogPlanet editor Michael Fremer examines the recently released John Lennon "Imagine" reissue on double LP and the Deluxe double Blu-ray, 4 CD set plus book edition.
    If you've been considering buying this set but are unsure, this video will give you the information needed to make the right decision. Former N.Y.C. Deputy Mayor Edward Morrison's obituary appeared in the January 24th New York Times, which prompted this video.
    Morrison was instrumental in helping John Lennon remain in America at a time when Richard Nixon was trying to deport him. Lennon's anti-war political agitation bugged Nixon. The deportation was going to based on an old pot bust. Morrison intervened and helped Lennon to remain in America by having him declared a "valuable cultural asset to New York City".
    The set's release didn't coincide with an anniversary of note- either of the original LP's debut on September of 1971 or Lennon's assassination on December 8th, 1980 and nothing in the book explains it either. Not that it matters. "Imagine" was Lennon's most loved album, though it could be easily argued that his first solo album "Plastic Ono Band" was a more enduring and significant record. It certainly makes for more difficult but rewarding listening!
    The title song's idealism rubbed some the wrong way upon its release, but Lennon defended it saying it was meant as a children's song. Today, we could use more idealistic songs like "Imagine"! There's not a clunker among the ten songs and all have stood the test of time.

    I was ten. I still remember the look on my mom's face as she walked in the door the next morning, as she worked third shift. Her first words were "John Lennon is dead". Having been born in '70, the year of the Beatles breakup, and basically RAISED on the Beatles, I was shocked. All I remember next was the silence in the house. I was only 10, but I knew, especially after seeing the news coverage, that the world had changed overnight. When I think of that morning, I immediately feel as I did when I was ten. It's especially strange to think that I am now nine years older than John was when he was killed. Some things can affect you forever...

      @Pauls_Archive Před 3 lety

      Well, that’s a point of view of course, but unless you have sat down and heard these ultimate mixes, you can’t really condemn them!,
      For a start, if a recording wasn’t produced very well to begin with, the cleanest master you can find won’t make any difference in how it sounds ,
      Modern technology means they can do wonders and just to add, this box set has been done from the original masters - the tape boxes are shown also in the accompanying book,
      The Imagine album originally, wasn’t produced very well, I think that’s generally considered true. These new remixes have done wonders for the sound, they have done such a great job, including bringing John’s voice up in the mix,
      I own a number a of copies of the Imagine album, none sound anywhere near as good as these remixes!
      Are you saying you’d rather listen to an Inferior sounding recording because it’s as is, to one that has been sonically improved?

    John Lennon's immigration lawyer was Leon Wildes. In January 1972 Leon received a phone call from a friend that a British singer and his wife needed help. Leon met with Lennon and Ono at their 105 Bank Street apartment. When he went home he told his wife and young son Michael that he met with a Jack Lemmon and his Japanese wife Yoko Moto. He had no idea who the Lennon's were. For the next 5 years Leon fought the Nixon administration and J Edgar Hoovers FBI and eventually won. President Obama used the Lennon/Leon case for his DACA executive order. Strangely Leon's son Michael is Melania Trump's and her parents immigration lawyer. So here we have Nixon. Lennon, Immigration, DACA. Obama and Trump.

I listen to CDs a lot nowadays as I’m saving up for the new turntable. I must say that good recorded and good mastered CD can sound pretty nice. Japanese SHM CD, K2HD Remastered sound very “analogue”. I agree that nothing deliverers the music listening experience like the vinyl ( maybe real-to-real 🤔 ) and mind me but I shall keep listening to an analogue cassettes, dcc, DAT, SACD....and keep saving up for that ungodly expensive Technics Reference class turntable 😎. Proverbial record in this video might be a nice one to play on my new turntable. Thanks for the video.

    It is probably a little late to add this comment but it might be good for someone. I have the EU pressing of the Vinyl made by Optimal Media, and today I received the ltd edition clear color made by GZ. Not sure if Michael has listened to the Optimal M, but I compared both and the Optimal M has bottom end which is missing in the GZ. Of course I don't expect the Optimal pressing can compete against the Hi Res files but there's definitely hope within the master cut at Optimal. Not to say that GZ cut is bad, it is just different.

    My theory for the timing on the box is that Yoko now collects a publishing royalty, having been awarded a half-composer credit in the last year or so. If I were a cynic, that would make it a "cash grab" for her. BUT - it's not a really inexpensive box. you have to love it a lot to re-buy at $90 on-up. And as for the sound on this remixed set, I rather liked the result.

    The reason the 2000 remaster wasn't very good was because Yoko wouldn't allow MFSL to use the original tapes. She insisted they use a copy of the original master mix.

      I like Fermer’s reviews. I just thought it was strange knowing that he is a fan of Lennon, and the Beatles, that he made that mistake.
      You on the other hand, you seem to have a different opinion on John Lennon. With a opinion like yours, you must have a lot of free time to watch reviews of albums over forty years old, that you probably don’t care about. Good job! I salute you, for your opinion, and being able to waste my time.

    Please identify who "he" is.
    Is it John, not liking his own voice?
    Or is it John Feldman (mentioned in the same sentence, at 6:14) not liking John's voice?
    Thank you.

      Analog Planet Haha 🤣 Touched a nerve I see. My comment was half in jest, but only half. Funny how you guys lament the lack of younger audiophiles yet you’re stuck in the 60s and 70s about 90% of the time. And no, I never understood the fascination with comics books. I prefer physics and engineering, and have degrees in both.

    • @AnalogPlanet
      @AnalogPlanet  Před 5 lety +1

      @@luomoalto There are plenty of young audiophiles and I don't lament anything. Please address me as an individual, not as "you guys". Unless you are a collectivist. I know the demographic spread of this CZcams channel and it's satisfyingly middle aged and somewhat below. Headphones and vinyl are nicely driving down the demographics but the fact is that young people's tastes tend to be less sophisticated in everything: from food, to drink to audio. It's not really a problem as young people grow up and their tastes improve. Look at this video's #s! More than 10,000 views in a week. The issue isn't when the music was created. The issue is the quality and The Beatles still attract a huge audience with a wide demographic.

    • @luomoalto
      @luomoalto Před 5 lety

      Analog Planet. Re: “ people’s tastes get more sophisticated over time”. I partially agree... What I mean is that someone might be 35 or even 45 before they hear a really good system. So it wasn’t because their tastes evolved, it was lack of exposure. How do we engage younger people? Sorry, but I strongly disagree that Beatles fans cover a wide demographic. I’m 48 and none of my friends my age listen to the Beatles or anything of that vintage. Not never, but very rarely at best. And it only drops off (quickly) from there. If you surveyed people under 40, I’m sure you’d find that very few ever owned (or streamed) any Beatles at all... Sorry, but I think you just made my point that you’re a bit out of touch with the younger generation. That said, I do respect you, and I enjoy your work. But I couldn’t resist giving you a hard time over that one issue. 🤣. Peace.

      @@luomoalto I'm 27 , I love the Beatles and I have a small collection of their albums on vinyl , always looking for more , most of my music collection is 60s,70s,80's,90,s I only have two new artist s on vinyl , Eric Church and Adele , the music was better , musicians actually created art and had real instruments and not computer generated beats , they could write their own songs too ! The talent level and work that they put into their music only exists in small portions today , digital is destroying music . The "one man band" era sucks . In the words of Bob Segar "I like that old time rock and roll" and blues , jazz, country, classical, grunge , metal, hell even Sinatra, But I digress . Peace
