Mel, I just want to let you know what an inspiration you been to me since I discovered you a few years ago - you were struggling with depression, but cleaning your house and getting on with things. An especially poignant moment from that video was you smiling through tears and gently bumping foreheads with your sweet elderly cat as you made your bed. I was going through a a bad patch myself and it was so healing to see someone love through the pain and keep moving forward. I “borrowed” a song from your video (“A Thousand Years” by Ten Towers) for a playlist I listen to when exercising. I was just at the gym today and that song came on and reminded me of you. Then, as I was leaving the gym, I got a notification of this latest video, and I just felt compelled to tell you about the positive influence you’ve had on my life. Thank you, Mel! 💓

Oh Susan. I can’t tell you how much your message has meant to me. From your mention of Nemo to bringing inspiration. I’m so so grateful for the people who have found me through this channel. I needed a reason to keep going and that’s what I was seeking by doing these videos this month - and here it is. If I can help another person through “a rough patch” by sharing my real life - then it’s soooo worth it. Thank-you thank-you thank-you. I feel like Nemo just gave me the head butt I needed to get going.

Oh, and we were also deeply in debt and were following a strict plan for paying it off over four years. A year in, our house flooded during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Flood insurance provided for reconstruction and refurnishing, but we chose to use the furniture money to pay off our debts instead. While I wouldn't recommend disaster as a strategy, I will say that sitting on the floor felt way better than sitting on a pile of bills!

Hi Mel, consolidating debt makes it so much easier and cheaper in the long run as you pay less interest. Getting rid of unnecessary credit cards also helps, I only have the Coles Mastercard now and the limit is only $500, good for emergencies but I can't overspend. You are doing good though, your debt is going down. It sounds like your children are going to love their xmas gifts!!!💝🎁 Thanks for sharing. 🥰 😘

Yeah - I think once we get down to a certain amount we will be able to consolidate debt - getting rid of the Audi will help too! I can't wait to be honest and really have begun to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I think March will be the month we apply.

Good to see your sorting your debts as so many people hide their head in the sand . I do not have any now as the house is paid off and got rid of my overdraft with the bank , Never had a credit card but did stupidly have a doorstep loan and bank loan in the past. Never again as it caused so much stress .x

Have you considered reading the barefoot investor? He suggests snowballing debts, pay off the smallest debt and then add that payment to the next smallest etc?
We are a family of 6 and had a lot of debt at one point, getting rid of the debt allowed us to save a deposit for our first home! Keep it up it will be worth it in the end 😊

I wouldn't consolidate the latitude or zip. Why would you move the 0% interest things to a higher interest thing? I agree that consolidation, with one fortnightly payment, is mentally easier than 12 different payments.
I totally understand the going buck wild when your income increases. I did the same thing when I went from living on student payments to getting my first time job. Had to rein it in!!
The feeling when you pay it off, and those fortnightly payments can go into savings, is an awesome feeling. Then, you can walk into apple and buy an iPad in cash!

  • @pppetra

You seem to have a good understanding of how this all came to be.
As a dutchie i can not grasp the concept of this many loans. We have a mortgage 150000 for a 290000 house.
We had a small loan for solarpanels for which we paid 200 euro that is partially free cause we are allowed to put it on a certain list when doing our yearly taxreport. It has a 0% interest and we always had the money we owed in a savings.
We both had studentloans at 0% interest and we paid them of in 5 years.
We have a creditcard but we use it rarely. Just for a car on a holiday or a store we can not pay different. We also make full payments before the daya interest is added. We use it more as a debitcard. If we do not have the money we can not buy it.

Mel you have minimised your debt since the last update, even if you have added to it. So lets celebrate, thats huge.
This tine of year is hard to cute back when you have kids i totally get it and even harder when the cost of living is going up. Have you considered some local food gampera to help and use that money towarda the debt?
Consolidation is definitely a great idea and doesnt cost you anything to talk to someone to see qhat your options are? Possibly your bank for a loan to cover all debt in one amount.

    • @MySemiSortedLife
      @MySemiSortedLife  Před 8 měsíci

Yes... and when I consider I've paid for a school camp, extra expenses related to senior shirts, Maeve's 16th (and learners) and other things with cash - and without adding to the debt - it's actually better than the numbers on the paper. I probably wouldn't get hampers to be honest - we are extremely "well off" compared to so many others right now and I would feel terrible to think that I might take something from another. You've actually given me the idea that perhaps I can pop into one of those hamper places that charge a minimal fee and pay for 1 or 2 for someone else. That would satisfy my spending urges too to be honest and at least it would be helpful. If I'm gonna spend - it may as well help others! In terms of a consolidation loan - I want to clean up my spending some more and will apply for one around March 2024 I'm thinking....fingers crossed.
