I would like to thank everyone who supports Smarter Every Day on Patreon ( www.patreon.com/smartereveryday ). You're making all of our supersonic baseball data dreams come true. I have some very interesting things planned for the cannon, and I'm excited to share it. If you'd like to consider supporting on Patreon as well, I'd love to send you a baseball. If you've been a supporter for a while now, I have a little thank you headed your way in the near future (still working out the logistics). *_Thank you for sticking with me._* The fact that you've decided to not only support, but to *stick with me* is huge.

Eternally wise words from Adam.
Wise wise words
exactly what I thought after the test shot and he immediately gets up to right on the wood board
He was never a real scientist, so many tests they failed to do things proper. I guess thats why people liked it, science for idiots. But always bugged me when they wouldn't do the most obvious thing to test.

"I'd love to send you a baseball"
Um, just how fast shipping are we talking about? Should I be wearing body armor?
Better be!
On second thought, body armor might not be enough...
Rough numbers for comparison:
* 145 g baseball * 480 m/s = about 70 N-s momentum
* 28 g 12-gauge slug * 537 m/s = about 15 N-s
* 48 g .50 BMG * 859 m/s = about 41 N-s momentum
Now I want Destin to make a video to see how far they can shoot a baseball. Might have to go out into a desert somewhere for that though. And they may need to imbed a gps tracker in the baseball in order to find it. 😂
@@jonandvicki Rough numbers say 14.6 miles for 1074 MPH muzzle velocity, starting close to ground level, with zero air drag. So that's an upper bound on what's achievable.
The data he collected in this video should allow a reasonable approximation of the ballistic coefficient (at sea level pressure... drag is lower at altitude), which will allow us to predict range far more accurately. One question is that of structural integrity: if the ball begins to break up due to stress in flight (especially when decelerating through max Q) there will be threads and bits of leather flailing around which greatly increase drag. So the BC of an intact ball might not be the best number to use.
@@AndrewZonenberg And if it's near a residential area?
Forget the smooth creamy taste of Ken's extra-heavy mayonnaise, I need to know what kind of pen that is. It's clearly a unit of superior quality, in order to be so beloved by all who come in contact with it.

@@davidklein1245 Wouldn't 1.4 be two significant digits though?
I would love to see a high speed thermal image of the impacts, either on the steel plate or on the sprinkles. The energy of that ball is significantly being dissipated as heat, and it would be fascinating to see where it goes and at what rate it decays.
The amount of heat loss is proportional to how (in)elastic the collision is. The baseball is fairly elastic (until it isn't, at which point talking about the temperature of the rapidly dissipating debris cloud is mostly pointless), so I wouldn't expect it to heat up much. The sprinkles for example deformed quite a bit and stayed that way, so that would be interesting. Not sure about the mayonnaise or the steel plate, but I would expect almost no heat transfer to the mayo in this short amount if time (lots of water in mayo, which takes longer to heat up relative to other materials). The steel plate I would expect to be a couple degrees warmer for a minute or two after you shoot a Mach 1 ball at it, but that's just a guess.

I am not sure what he meant by parting line, but i think there was a slight mistake? Since the initial momentum of the ball-sprinkle system was non zero to the left, the sum of left going and right going particle wouldnt add up to an equal, unless you take left and right wrt the center of mass of the system.
To be fair, you're a physics teacher so it's the day after you teach x concept very often.
i got -7 out of 25 on a physics test once because i didnt underline my answers, and they were wrong at the same time. I would have received higher marks if I just didnt show up:/

I noticed something interesting happening at 13:58 just before the baseball hits the sprinkles. Around the laces on the right side of the ball, you can see a bluish halo. Is that a result of drag on the laces, light bending due to turbulence, difference in pressures like a cavitation bubble, or something else?
You right! That is interesting
Yes that's light bending due to the pressure wave. Also notice the triange shape just below the red lid becomes darker right at 13:59 before the ball hits. I think that's also due to the pressure wave.

"We dieseled mayonnaise" has to be one of the strangest combinations of words I've ever heard. I love it.
I died when he said that. Its cause it hit with so much force it compressed the mayo (oil/fuel) to the point of ignition like a diesel engine would. But those are internal combustion engines which makes it much easier to achieve that sort of compression, the air pressure delta was so great between the ball and the jug of mayo compared to the air pressure around it, it was able to achieve an external combustion by compression ignition. Which is pretty incredible.
I've been laughing at this one part for a solid 5 minutes 🤣 Never would've even imagined this was possible!

While the duke was defeating the British at Port Mahon, his chef was creating a victory feast that included a sauce made of cream and eggs. When the chef realized that there was no cream in the kitchen, he improvised, substituting olive oil for the cream.
