When I was a child in the 1950s Chessington Zoo, Surrey was a private zoo and the owner lived in the manor House. He had a pair of tigers in a paddock near the children's slides. He used to go into their paddock and feed the tigers by hand. When the female died ,the male was all alone. Then the owner died ,and the surviving tiger would not eat. He died after 3 months of a broken heart. When the owner's wife drove past ,he lifted up his head in expectation,, and then put his head down on his paws. I remem, ber seeing him. It made the National Press when he died.

he almost certainly means Serbia. I would imagine these bears are fairly common in Siberia and while in modern times it's not a completely barren wasteland, given the sparse population and climate, the traveling circus is not a very viable thing. it would be about as likely as one in Canadian Northwest Territories or Alaska.
Also he mentions a transport of merely 870 miles. that seems like a more appropriate distance between, say, Bern and Belgrade. if we assume the Siberian Circus were from say, Novosibirsk (pretty much the only place I can imagine this entertainment would be) that's further than going from Seattle to Miami....through Russia and Eastern Europe...just for one bear....

I cannot understand why there are still circuses and zoos. And yes, I hate all zoos, even the 'good' ones. I think ALL ANIMAL CIRCUSES SHOULD BE BANNED - or better yet, People Should Stop Attending To See Animal Cruelty! I know the parents probably think that all they want to do is show their kids that cute bear roll some ball around or ride a bike, or some seals jump through hoops, but are they aware whAt those animals do or go through before and after the performance?! And what makes people think that they are entitled to see the poor defenseless animals perform tricks on demand?... That thought escapes me. 😔

it is unfortunate that it was a Serbian circus, a few of its peoples are well known for being not nice, not humane, for being more f*ked up than the Soviets was, and for some loving daemonic like abuse of others (animals or human).

Fantastic story. Great to see. I live in the UK near Yorkshire Wildlife Park. They have just rescued 4 Japanese Brown Bears from terrible conditions. Flying them 5,000 miles to the park. The bears were kept for many tears in tiny concrete enclosures and fed scraps. Now they have an enormous environment with interesting features, toys and a lake. It’s fantastic to see them thriving in the new environment. Unfortunately one of the bears was 27 years old and had been kept in those conditions for its whole life and was too ill and had to be put to sleep. You might like to see the Yorkshire Wildlife Park Brown Bear Rescue short film on CZcams.

@@vallee3140 they didn't live very long. They were in such a poor state of health after years and years. But they had good conditions at YWP. The enclosure they were in was very big with toys and a pond. In Japan the brothers had never touched each other, felt grass or rain.
