  • The Disk Utility application is a powerful tool for keeping the drives that are connected to your Mac happy and healthy. But there are situations in which it may not be available. As an example, connecting to a remote computer via SSH, or Disk Utility simply refusing to launch.
In this tutorial, I will show you how to:
    - Find a disk that may have an error
    - Verify a disk from the command line
    - Repair that disk (if need be) from the command line

Thanks so much! I’m a former professional IT manager with mostly DOS experience & some Unix command line experience, now a SAHM for 14+ years. 😊 I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro on the fritz that won’t launch the MacOS Utilities. Going to try this! Thanks again!

Somehow I restored my macintosh HD drive in the disk utilities with the OS X base system and now I cannot reinstall the Mac OS or even erase and format the HD. What do I do?

Hi There, I am trying your tutorial, but I get stuck here:
    "DAs-Mac-Mini:Volumes DA$ cd /Volumes/
    DAs-Mac-Mini:Volumes DA$ ls
    D A 1 T 01 D A 1 T 02 Macintosh HD eDrive
    DAs-Mac-Mini:Volumes DA$ diskutil verifyVolume D A 1 T 01
    Usage: diskutil verifyVolume MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
Verify the file system data structures of a volume.
Ownership of the affected disk is required."
    DAs-Mac-Mini:Volumes DA$
I don't understand the "Ownership of the affected disk is required". How can I get passed this. I am the Admin.
    Thank you so much!

    Usage: diskutil repairVolume MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
Repair the file system data structures of a volume.
Ownership of the affected disk is required.
