  • I was super lucky to have been invited to visit the currently-under construction Western Sydney International Airport last week! It was a really exciting experience getting to see the entire site under construction, taking in the absolute hive of activity unfolding at the site. Lucky for you all, I took plenty of photos and videos! Follow me inside the airport as we explore it all, from the check-in area, to the retail space, to the baggage drop-off zones to the apron and so much more.

    Wow i can't believe it's this far along. I'm 50, so can recall all the 'fights' during the 80s and 90s against the airport. It's long overdue IMO. Also at my age, I'll probably be dead by the time it reaches that peak in 2063. I resent the comment of there being "nothing there" on the drive. There is green open space, which, IMO, is better than sterile built up area, and increasing urbanisation, that increases the heat and wind effects in those areas. Hope you're enjoying Tassie, my father in law lives there, and as such I've been many times, it's a beautiful state to visit. If you read this before leaving Tassie, I hope you get the chance to visit Ashgrove Cheese, and Anvers Chocolates, 2 of my favourite places in the north.

    Re the curfew: note it's not just the night curfew but also the hourly curfew that can be really killer at YSSY. Planes sometimes have to wait at the runway for the clock to tick over, even if the previous hour had barely any flights. Really compounds delays because the airport can't make up time.

    16:20 its biggest selling point is lack of curfew. problem is though, with their grand plans of building a new city around the airport, eventually the residents will be pissed and a curfew will be implemented.

  • @PineappleSkip
    @PineappleSkip Před rokem +6

    Great video, thanks Sharath. As to it being 24/7 and a replacement, I’m thinking this is engineers’ dreams. SYD has two overwater runways, the new airport has none, but it has bazillions of residents ready to make complaints once they perceive the aircraft noise reality. My money is on a curfew (after the howls start) and no replacement.

    • @PFay
      @PFay Před rokem +3

      Indeed. For obvious reasons State and Federal governments have not highlighted the new airport no curfew plans. Large parts of western Sydney might not become fully aware of this until they are chronically sleep deprived after months of operations. By then the airport might have become such a political liability. Governments will be forced to make changes.

    • @BuildingBeautifully

    On the Metro it should be noted that it will be in the centre of the fully built terminal. The current terminal under construction (while large) is only about 20% of the final design (with an additional runway).
    To be honest a bus would probably have been good enough for the first 5-10 years anyway, and the rail connection won't really get going until the connections are built to Tallawong and Glenfield/Macarthur as well as the 2nd link to Parramatta.

    • @jack2453
      @jack2453 Před rokem +4

      Even better a short cheap extension to the SW rail would provide even better service, and a direct link to the CBD which the metro won't. Once again ideology trumps value for money.

    • @mark123655
      @mark123655 Před rokem

      @@jack2453 Both links are about the same distance so would have cost similar amounts.
      St.Marys however provides far better access to the Penrith to Parramatta corridor that the airport is primarily designed to serve, as they currently have the furthest distance to travel to the main Sydney airport.

    • @jack2453
      @jack2453 Před rokem

      @@mark123655 10km of new automated metro largely in tunnel has to be considerably more expensive than a 10 km extension to existing heavy rail or a 1-2 km extension to the already planned line to Aerotropolis. But it is not either/or the cost of a heavy rail link from the termibal to the Aerotropolis would be trivial in the context of the total project cost, and the benefit of an express a no-change single seat ride to the CBD would be enormous.

    • @mark123655

      But to the detriment of people going to Parramatta, and particularly to Penrith - probably by 20-30min
      This is a 2nd airport, not a replacement.
      For the first 20+ yrs Mascot will be much larger and have way more flights to multiple destinations.
      Even if flights are slightly cheaper, your average CBD exec isn't going to spend 1hr+ on a train to Badgerys when Mascot is much closer.

    I hope that the upgraded northern road can handle the traffic of providing for what will be a logistical hub. Ideally, this should be an opportunity to expand sydney's metropolitan rail freight lines, in my opinon. The northern road is quiet now, but once there's a city built around it and it's flogged with commuter and industrial traffic, that could be a different story.

    Good thing that you flew your drone at a relatively low altitude, Western Sydney Airport is a favourite fly-over zone for student pilots flying from Camden since it's in the designated 'training area' (AFAIK). There was even an emergency landing made by a GA (General Aviation) aircraft there at some point recently. Great aviation-related content, keep it up! :)

    • @morerightrudder9742

      Further on that, the badgery's creek aircraft training area spans from camden to the edge of glenmore park and is the training area for all Sydney general aviation traffic including bankstown and the oaks, so it gets incredibly busy. As long as you keep your drones below 400ft AGL there won't be a conflict.

    The good thing about building it new is that all the most modern of hardware can be built into it from the outset...as opposed to retro fitting it all into existing buildings such as Kingsford Smith...whilst maintaining operations. Will be great to see it all in operation in the years to come...and the eventual first operations of the airport.

    “Metres squared” is just plain wrong. Please use the mathematically correct term: “square metres”, ie m^2, measuring area. “Metres squared” (^2m) is a linear measurement. The numeral 100 is 10 squared (10^2 or 10 x 10), or the square root of 100 is 10. “^2” denotes a “superscripted 2” like superscripting the “th” in “4th”. YT comments cannot superscript. Therefore, 75,000 or 75k “square metres” ie 75,000m^2 in scientific notation (7.5 hectares or ~18.5 acres) of which the square root is ~273.86m. In conclusion, 75,000 “metres squared” or 75,000^2m is a linear measurement, 5,625,000,000 metres ie 5,625,000 kilometres - just a little bit out?

    Just wait till it opens for the flood of complaints about a curfew. Some politician wanting to get elected will promise a curfew lets hope the operating contract is watertight on 24/7 operation. In regard to the curfew now here's 1 example. EK414 from Dubai usually lands at 10:30pm. If your connecting with that flight, from somewhere else in Europe & your connecting flight is late EK414 cannot wait for you as it will miss the curfew in Sydney. If that flight gets moved to Sydney West in the future a half-hour delay won't be a problem. What happens if your late into Dubai they offer you the next available flight which goes via Singapore. That adds nearly 12 hours & one extra stop on your flight. I was offered that but chose to sit it out for 7 hours in Dubai & arrived on the 6am flight the next morning. Can't wait to have Sydney West as an option just for the 20 minute drive home from the airport

Let’s hope the new airport does not make that list in the future, although a railway station a hundred metres from the door does not give me a lot of confidence, without adding the 2-3 hour trip to the city for business or medical appointment in a crowded carriage. A camel is a race horse designed by a government. An airport is not a destination.

      It’s currently about 1-2 hours to Sydney CBD (depending on the level of traffic) via Elizabeth Dr & Northern Rd. The extension of the M4 tunnels to ANZAC bridge (which is currently happening) will help in shortening that time. The extension of the M4 tunnel will potentially save about 20-25 minutes in travel time. And it should continue to be eligible for the toll relief/refund scheme for privately registered vehicles.

    The Wylde Mountain bike park was relocated to make way for the M12 Motorway to the new airport along Elizabeth Drive. Liverpool BMX track also got moved there after it was suspiciously closed due to the "discovery" of asbestos. Same thing happened to the radio control car track. Both were operating for years until someone went looking for asbestos there so they could shut them down. I will never use the new airport. My travelling days are behind me now.

    I agree with that the airport will been a great investment for western Sydney, but the way that the state government handles infrastructure and the "latte or red rooster line" is proof that there will be more issues with this airport. The fact of curfews and flight paths and adding infrastructure like you talked about with Marsden Park will show how inept the state government is with dealing with Western Sydney

    The Toll on the M7 makes it virtually impossible for overseas travellers to use, and therefore won't be able to use the M12 to access the airport.
    That's going to lead to a lot of overseas (or even out-of-state) travellers using local roads instead.
    Any motorway which is designed to link an international airport to a city should have a toll-free option, whether it be by means of separate lanes for express toll users, or even by setting up the tollgates at the airport to issue free tickets, or incur no fee when a ticket is presented.

Oh, and surely all good lounges should have a view of the runways and apron. Will it really only be 1st class that gets to see the big birds flock fly?

  • @tonychen3628

    Talking of a congested airport forcing the government to react and find a new place for a new airport, I will use Shanghai as an example (quite a similar situation building its 2nd international airport as Sydney is going through), which its Hongqiao airport(SHA),was built in 1920s, expanded several times to an international terminal in 60s, reach its capacity and it was already too late to expand itself to a larger scale in the 80s as its nearby land had been taken by residents and businesses over the years(which made it still a 2-runway, 2-terminal airport till this date), so Shanghai gov. have to look for places for a new international airport (which it became the Pudong international airport(PVG) at its city far east to its CBD, compared to SHA western location to the CBD, but closer, size-wise PVG 1.45m sqm to SHA 0.51m sqm, and operation-wise PVG is more international flights focused, while SHA is more domestic flights focused, though both international and domestic flights are available in both airports)
    My point here is that western Sydney Airport will be an amazing project to help Kingsford Smith, and the western Sydney area, given its proposed number of runways and terminals, and public transit projects to complement it. Kingsford Smith to Sydney can be like Hongqiao to Shanghai, more of a domestic flights focused, closer to CBD option for travellers(though the curfew is still a major downside but will be less painful to most if there is a second option), while the new airport can be the giant hub of travellers, cargoes, workers to go around the world.
    As for the concern about curfew enforcement out there, I've been wondering why Tullamarine in Melbourne doesn't have one, given there are also some residential zone around it as I looked up, hmm.

    It’s interesting with no curfew at Western Sydney Airport. Assuming passenger flights could leave and arrive at the airport at any time, will there be a 24 hour metro service to the airport? Even if you make the driverless metro airport line a 24 hour operation, the metro does not meet every corner of Sydney, relying on few interchanges with suburban train lines that are not 24 hours.

      They have this in Adelaide. The gates are all the same level, they just have big sliding glass doors that can be used to isolate a flexible number of the central gates to funnel passengers through the centrally located inbound and outbound immigration facilities. The way it's laid out in Adelaide, all passengers (domestic and international) proceed from check-in through security to the "secure"/"airside" part of the terminal first, but then International passengers go through outward border control to enter the inner "International" part of the terminal, which has access to however many gates they have sealed off for international use at the time. Arriving international passengers are directed to an intermediate level below for arrivals immigration before going down to the lower level for international baggage reclaim then through the customs exit.
      It looks like the gates themselves are intended to be mixed mode - the 7 piers having dual aerobridges might be able to convert into two gates per pier for smaller aircraft, but larger aircraft both need more space and typically use two aerobridges (as shown in the mock-ups in the video).

On a world stage however it looks average size, it will open with Just one runway and there is only room for a second runway, most major world airports have 3, 4, 5 or more runways.
