His life, he carried his whole life in his trunk, the curtain rings his picture of Marie, his pajamas, his coat and sweaters, his whole life!, BTW, this movie had a dark side when it was filmed, Neal's wife thought he was cheating so everytime he called with another wild excuse she just got more upset, that's why she was crying a d why she looked at him with such love a d respect!!❤️
I was 14 when this film came out never seen then not till I left home at 16 when I first watch it .

There's a lost extended version of this movie where Neil's wife thinks he's having an affair, which explains why she's so emotional when she sees him come home with Del, confirming that he was being truthful. Her reaction always seemed a little dramatic before I knew about that lol!

It's true, they cut a scene that showed she was a little suspicious of him for all the lies and thought he might have been cheating on him. In a real sense, bringing Del home might have kept their marriage from going to a bad place. I always wondered what a sequel of this film might have looked like, and I imagine Del being a close family friend.
I always thought the same thing and that revelation of the subplot helped. I wish they left a little snippet of that subplot so that her reaction made more sense.
The revelation about Del’s trunk is that unfortunately he has been living out of it because he was homeless😢 I think the trunk represents his struggle to get his life back on track after the death of Marie but with Neil helping him carry it at the end it at the end he can now find a new path through their friendship.
I don't think Del was homeless. I think he just traveled most of the time as a salesman since his wife died. He was obviously a very successful salesman and his trunk had all of his samples and inventory he traveled around with.
@@jbacunn He was "homeless" in the sense he didn't have a permanent residence. He obviously had an income and was functioning in society he just didn't have a "home " He lived in hotels and various modes of transportation.

@@ronweber1402 There's more to it in the script. Without Marie, his house was no longer a home, so he sold it and took up his current nomadic lifestyle; in the script, Del says he counts about 300 motels as his home.

I adore this movie, it always makes me laugh and cry. The chemistry between Martin and Candy is the heart of the movie, and it's wonderful watching them grow closer as the movie progresses. John Candy is still missed to this day, his former cast members all sing his praises, and he was a true gentleman, by all accounts.
The freeze frame on John's smile is a really beautiful ending.

Friends went to Olive Garden in Toronto. They were having dinner and John Candy comes rolling in chatting up the whole room and shaking hands with everyone. Really nice guy.
Sadly both Candy and Hughes left us too soon. I grew up in the 70's and 80's(teen years), those two are a major part of my best memories.
When I was growing up, this was the 1st movie with adult language and situations I was allowed to watch. It has been a Holiday staple ever since. John Candy and John Hughes are severely missed. RIP.
Still one of the funniest buddy comedy road trip movies ever made.
That scene with Kevin Bacon in another movie called She's Having my Baby.
I said it before and I'll say it again , one of John candy's best work. He's a national treasure. Sad he departed before his time. Best actor ever lived.

I would imagine since Dell was homeless the trunk held everything he owned (clothing, personal effects). I'd like to think it included a picture of Dorothy and maybe her wedding ring.
We see him put a picture of this wife up on the nightstand of Braidwood Inn.
What was in his chest was everything he owned Jen, remember "I haven't been home in years" he's been on the road since his wife passed a way. Also another great Steve Martin movie is My Blue Heaven. If you haven't seen it. : )
The trunk is Del's entire foundation-his home, his memories, and his storage. More importantly, the trunk is symbolic of Del and Neal's new association. It is filled with the crazy events of the film that brought them together, and contains the lessons learned by both characters along the way.
The trunk is also symbolic of relationships. When Marie was alive, Del had her to help carry their relationship. After she died, their relationship became the trunk and the things in it, and it was not possible for one person to easily carry. Along comes Neal to help carry the trunk, and a new relationship was born. The lesson is that the heavy things in life are made lighter when you have someone to help carry them with you.
This movie has become as quintessential to Thanksgiving as "Miracle on 34th Street" has become to Christmas: a holiday classic to be handed down through the generations.
24:03 The reason his wife is crying is that there was a subplot that was cut from the movie. She suspected that Del Griffith was completely fictional, and that Neal was trying to use the Del character to cover up the fact he was cheating on her.
Another cut subplot explains the hotel robbery, apparently Neal stiffed a pizza delivery boy of a tip, and that was who broke in and robbed them.

Knuckle-cracking can feel great. A little bit of tension builds up in my joints, and cracking them feels like a relief.
Wonderful Thanksgiving movie! I was an unspottable extra in this movie. It was shot in and around Chicago, and when they asked for people to be extras in the film, I signed up. The group I was assigned to spent two days in a bus station. RIP John Candy

In the olden days, traveling salesman had to carry their inventory or samples in trunks like that.
You need to follow this up with Uncle Buck, another Candy classic.
Steve Martin is great. You should watch "The Jerk" 1979 or "The Lonely Guy" 1984 or Roxanne 1987 (Roxanne is a romantic comedy which I think you enjoy)

The scene where they go between the 🚛 might be one of the best scenes in comedy. It's such a set up for disaster, they both give great screams as they turn into skeletons (punctuated by the cuts of John Candy in the cartoon 😈 costume), and then they're just fine 😅 Until the brick joke lands - 🚬 and they just laugh 🤣🤣🤣
I imagine left inside the large case was Del griffins worldly belongings as he had no home to go to
About an hour and a half of scenes and sub plots were cut from the final edit. No directors cut was ever realeased.
One of my favorite movie scenes is the confrontation at the rental car desk. Edie McClurg is such a treasure in everything she does!

Sub plot of neils wife suspecting he was having an affair, was cut due to time and pacing, so her realizing that del was real, makes her tears make more sense.

Steve Martin carpet F Bombing the lady at the car rental counter is friggin' classic.
"How would you like a mouthful of teeth" could be the most passive aggressive thing I've ever heard.
So the wife was crying because there was a subplot (cut from the final film) about how she thought Neal was having an affair, which is why his officemate made it home whereas he kept telling her he was stuck somewhere else. This explains why she looked at Del so intensely, as he was proof that Neal being was faithful to her.... Excellent movie for the season!

I am a knuckle cracker. It is a compulsion as I start feeling a strange sensation in my knuckles. It only hurt the first couple of times I did it many years ago, but now there is no pain whatsoever.
If you like this movie I recommend uncle buck and the great outdoors. you can't go wrong with John candy
Cracking knuckles/joints relieves tension in the joints and makes them feel looser and more comfortable.
The trunk is everything he owns, since he no longer has a home. While the music is good and perfectly placed, I would give the low key MVP to the man himself, John Hughes, RIP you beautiful soul.
I think the trunk probably contained just about everything thing Del owned. In my mind maybe he had a studio apartment somewhere, like Uncle Buck and a p.o. box somewhere and just lived for the most part on the road.
Great reaction as always! The 80s wouldn't have been so great without John Hughes and John Candy.
I took a train from L.A.to Chicago at 19 to play some gigs in a metal band. The bar car was awesome! I had an idea to go back to my seat when we went to states that had a 21 alcohol serving rule but they told me "Don't worry about it, you were servied in one state, you'll be served all the way". I was surprised but made some cool aquaintances! I ate gummy bears and beef jerky during the trip so I could buy drinks with my food money, lol. This was almost 30 years ago, don't know about now.
John Candy is also very good in JFK, in a more serious role, Oliver Stone's film with Kevin Kostner and a cast of great Hollywood figures.

The beds were branded “magic fingers”. I have stayed at exactly one hotel that had it, in the 90s, and it was horrible. Somebody had fed the machine then unplugged it when they realized how bad it was.
Martin and Candy are also in the musical "Little Shop of Horrors". Unfortunately their characters don't interact. It is a fun movie.
Heart always breaks when Del says he doesn't have a home! 😭😭💔

The vibrating beds were supposed to massage you but they never worked right so they were often a joke in movies.
John Candy is the most loveable character out there. I love watching this movie every year - my Thanksgiving tradition. Thanks for the reaction as always - it was great!! My MVP for this reaction is JEN! :)

I have all ways wondered while the Steve Martin character goes in to the city just to catch the train to go to the suburbs, probably Oak Park, which he past when he was in the truck, on the 290 express way.
It's before everything has "clicked" with him and his arc is complete, at this point he's still wanting to just ditch Del and never seen him again so why show Del where you live?
My father traveled all the time, he lived this movie

For those that don't have cracking/popping joints. There's no pain before, during, or after cracking/popping.There's like a tension or restricted type of feeling similar to how it feels when you reach the end of any range of movement except you can tell the tension isn't because the tendons/muscles are at their limit. If you push against that resistance enough then there's a pop/crack and then the joint doesn't experience the same tension/restriction any longer and moves more freely and so there's somewhat a feeling of tension relief. My personal favourite is in the morning when I can interlock my fingers with palms out and then bend them all back to a symphony of pops. It feels great afterwards like taking gloves off after an extended time. It's like freeing your joints up to move as much as they possibly can.
I watch this wonderful classic every Thanksgiving! It never gets old!
Jen, you might want to check out the film "Midnight Run" with Robert De Niro. It's along the same theme as this film. Only a little more serious plot line. Great road trip movie! You might want to consider it.

Well, Del stiffed him with Neal's wallet. Neal was in the shower, Del couldn't find his wallet so he got Neal's but Neal didn't have small enough bills to pay for the pizza and give a reasonable-sized tip. (And pizza delivery boys of the time only carried a few dollars worth to make change.) So he got a tiny tip and came back to rob them.
The main reason why I subscribed to your channel is how intuitive you are Jen. You knew Dells wife was dead before most of us did. In 1987, first time I saw this movie, I was 14. So many great, tear jerking, movies back then.
I love this movie. John Candy and Steve Martin are a great pair. RIP John.

They can never remake this classic. Candy & Martin had a chemistry that is unmatched with actors of today.

I grew up in Stubbville. They shot the movie in my hometown of South Dayton NY. Fun Fact: They had to truck in snow due to an early melt that year. If you notice the snow in Stubbville is dirtier than fresh snow. Love the reaction.
Huh... I lived in Kansas pretty much my entire life and always thought Stubbville was a made up name for location to just sound luke a grimy, working-class, Mid-Western town.
@@brianstraight9308 It was mainly because of the train depot in our small town. They also filmed a train seen from "The Natural" at the same depot. We've had John Candy, Steve Martin and Robert Redford in town. Lol. Our 15 minutes.
As a Chicagoan born and raised in Woodstock, IL (far NW suburb) it's impossible not to notice just how many scenes are all really local to Woodstock, most notably the house which is actually well over an hour outside Chicago by car with no traffic. I know the local area so well the film makes no sense with the order and location the scenes were shot, but they do give a very authentic Midwestern feel.
Fun fact, that exact location in town (yes, the house and cross street) as well as other almost 1 for 1 locations in Woodstock are also featured prominently in the film Groundhog Day. It's a very small town of maybe 20k in population, although technically part of the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area.
So I guess Woodstock must have that generic small town feel to it, but still basically "in Chicago". If you watch this movie and Groundhog Day anywhere remotely close in time it's impossible not to notice the insanely similar shooting locations. And again, noticeably that exactly cross street and home. Wild useless fun film fact.
Steve Martin was my childhood comedian. The first vinyl LP I ever bought with my own money was a comedy album of his. I'll always love him.
If you've never seen the movie Parenthood you should check it out. Steve Martin is so great in it and there's a SUPER young Keanu Reeves too. It's an under-appreciated 80s classic.
KNUCKLE CRACKER no it doesn't cause pain, like any joint cracks & you feel a split second feel relief. The cracking is just bubbles popping in the fluid that lubricate your joints
I really love this film and it's two main stars Steve Martin and the late John Candy but you guessed the sad twist of the film.
Fun to see this movie watched, it's a classic of mine. Buddy and I in high school wrote and "made" a seque/spin-offl to it using a VHS camcorder back in high school. He was the Neil-like character, I played the Del.

You picked a good year to watch this movie. All that snow in Buffalo makes this more believable. Snow used to come a lot earlier in the 80s and 90s. So its been about 20 years watching this movie with snowless Thanksgivings. lol
This movie is hilarious, heart warming and wholesome. Glad you enjoyed it. There are very few Thanksgiving movies out there but this one is absolutely perfect. As far as Dell's trunk is concerned, it really didn't matter what was in it. The trunk was his home. You don't see too many people traveling the country with a large foot locker or trunk in tow. As you can imagine, he probably had very few things in it. Mostly clothes and his shower curtain rings. Another great John Candy movie is Uncle Buck. Not sure if you've reacted to that one yet but it's every bit as good as this one.

I've stayed in a motel with the shaking bed back in the day. They called it "magic fingers". You'd put quarters in and it would turn on. Some would would gently vibrate, others would rattle your brain.
As a kid growing up in the 60s and 70s, I went on a LOT of cross-country road trips with my family and I can assure you that vibrating beds in crappy motels were, indeed, a thing that existed. Ask me about tiny bars of soap on airliners some time.

Fun fact - Steve's confrontation with the car rental lady is what got this movie upgraded in ratings...I think to R. I guess you have never seen "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"? You'd notice the guy on the mic announcing the flight cancellations and the car rental lady. I think you'd like it.

You missed Steve Martin's coworker from the beginning of the movie. He was Ferris Bueller's dad!
"She's crying".....apparently there was a subplot that originally ran through the movie that involved Steve's wife starting to believe that Del was a lie thought up to cover a possible affair. So if this was true, the final unveiling of Del at the door would have been a great relief to her questions about why the husband didn't make it home for 2 days.
Long haul trains have a bar car. I was on the shinkansen (bullet train) in Japan and they not didn't have a bar car but they had a snack cart they came by and smoking rooms.
My sister and her family watch this every year after Thanksgiving dinner. Still the funniest scene is "I want a f-ing car", followed by "You're f--d"

For those who have never seen this movie, you need to watch the airport rental car scene with ALL the F-Bombs as it was intended, as it truly makes that scene soooo much better! 😂

I watch this movie around every Thanksgiving. I was in a hotel room in 1978 and it had a vibrating bed. You put a quarter in the box and it vibrated for like 5 minutes. It is a novelty for about a minute. I haven't seen one since. It was funny to see one in a motel in 1987 indicating they haven't upgraded the beds in quite a while.
What was in the trunk? Everything he owns. By what I take is after his wife died he never went home again. It is left to the watcher's imagination if Dell was at home or was he on the road when his wife died. I imagine if my wife died suddenly and unexpectedly, while I was on the road working, I do not know how I would ever step into our house again.
Always love watching how this movie plays out, no matter how many times I've seen it. Another fun reaction🦃🍂🛬🚆🚘

I watch this movie every Thanksgiving. It still jerks a tear out of me every time. Btw, you know how people always say everyone has a twin somewhere in the world? I knew your twin about 20 years ago. Yall could be identical twins, except she had blond hair. But the same hair style, the same glasses, the same personality and sarcasm, same smile. Her name was Christine, she was adorable.

Although I know the movie and almost all the scenes, I can't recall actually sitting down and watching it in one sitting from beginning to end. This is a great choice, and somehow does not come to mind as a holiday movie despite the plotline and two comedy stars. It's fun getting your reaction, Jen!

When my wife and I divorced years ago, by the time the dust settled, all I had left was a few personal items. I was even homeless for a few months. So, I totally get it.
seems kind of a random thing to comment on, but since you asked, I do occasionally 'crack' joints, but the only time I feel like I *have to* is sometimes my neck gets tense and 'cracking' it back and forth is a relief

@ 10:03 it depends on what kind of train you're riding on. If it's only doing shorter trips they probably don't have one. I went east coast to west coast and then back on trains and they had a "Beverage/Snack" cart during the longer legs of the trip which I'm willing to bet is what they called a bar cart back in '87 (I did my train journeys a couple of years ago). The shorter trip trains probably get better diesel mileage without the snack car too (and they save money on paying staff to run it)
It's kind of funny that we never do get to see inside that foot locker of Del's. There was a rumor years ago that Del's dead wife was in it,* but more likely it's just oodles of shower curtain rings.
