Storyline
ll that Neal Page wants to do is to get home for Thanksgiving. When bad weather cancels his flight, he decides on other means of transportation. As well as bad luck, Neal is blessed with the presence of Del Griffith, shower-curtain-ring salesman and all-around blabbermouth who is never short of advice, conversation, bad jokes, or company. And when he decides that he is going the same direction as Neal..

If you enjoyed this, check out my reaction to Scream, which I just put out czcams.com/video/jKzunqSq5NQ/video.html
Bit different, I know 😂
Even though I know it's coming, the reveal that Del's wife has been dead 8 years gets me every time.
Dude… reading you say that gets me
It’s a punch to the gut.
Spoilers !!! Didn't get to watch this since release.......
The first time I saw this film, I wondered why it had such a strict rating. Then, it got to the rental counter scene. 🤣
Her 1st baby came out sideways line made me pee my pants when I 1st watched this, not to mention the car rental scene which I think is one of the funniest moments in movie history 😂
John Hughes is a national treasure his films bring so much nostalgia and emotion he is definitely missed as well as John Candy
"She didn't scream er nuthin"..........
One of the more underrated aspects of this hilariously beautiful piece of work is the music selection. Whether it's to accentuate comedic moments (the first motel Del and Neal go to, when Neal gets loses it at the airport parking lot.. and the cut after Neal gets picked up by his nuts soon after the trek, etc.), or the dramatic ones (well, you know the ones), the music is super 80s but super cool ❤
We cry at the end of every John Candy movie. For one more reason. Everything he did was wholesome. We loved him, we miss him. 🇨🇦
John Candy is a legend. RIP.😢
I lived near John Candy. Had the pleasure of meeting him a few times as a kid and teenager. He's exactly how you think he'd be. A true gem.
Awww!
A possible explanation for why you sensed an 'asshole' vibe is that in the original script there are earlier scenes where Neal's wife is convinced he’s having an affair & that’s the real reason why he’s run into so many ‘delays’ - she believes it's so he can spend time with the other woman. They filmed with that storyline intact so perhaps Steve was directed to play it with a 'nasty' undertone that wasn't needed once the affair sub plot was axed in editing ? It certainly had an effect on his wives performance which has always felt a little off to me before I knew about the original script. When Neal finally makes it home and actually has Del with him, she knows he was telling the truth all along. That's why she says "Hello Mr Griffiths" with such relief at 32:15 and hugs Neal so tenderly. It adds a layer of poignancy but was cut as Hughes felt it was too much sentimentality. I disagree, I think there's been so much hilarity that it could stand a little pathos.
It's largely remembered for it's humour, and Martin and Candy are obviously lauded as great comedic actors, but man, that last 5 minutes is god-tier dramatic acting. John Candy was an amazing actor, sadly missed.
"Is that Kevin Bacon? I had no idea he was in this..."
He isn't, he's in She's Having A Baby 😉
Nice lol
ONE of the funniest road trip buddy comedy movies ever made!
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃🍽️🥧😊
The revelation at the end is a killer. Gets me every time even though I have seen this many times.
I once got bumped to first class for no extra cost on the London to Singapore leg of a flight to Bali with Singapore Airlines. It was a fabulous experience. Just a great way to travel that distance that I could have in no way afforded.
I don't think even John Candy could have comically ruined it.
"What's he got in that trunk anyway?"
A hairdryer.
A pillow, picture of his wife.
@@claymccoyHe’s making a Spaceballs joke.
I watch this movie every Thanksgiving. The cool thing is that John Hughes based this story off a personal experience he had a few years earlier. He flew from Chicago to New York for a one day business trip, planned to fly home that night, his flight was rerouted to Wichita Kansas, and it took him 5 days to get back home to Chicago.
There are two chritsmas movies by John Hughes: National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989) an Home Alone (1990)
From what I gather, getting on an aeroplane in the 1980's (in the USA) was pretty much like catching a bus. Just turn up with your ticket and off you go
Pretty much.
HappyThanksgiving to you, too. I know its not a thing in England, but I heard its catching on. And hey, thankfullness is something everyone can celebrate.
Yes, flying in the 1980s was far different. Ever since 911, it has become a nightmare
If you want to explore more Steve Martin, you can start at the beginning. The Jerk. A fun John Candy movie is Uncle Buck, also by Hughes. If you've seen that already, then Armed & Dangerous.
"He is definitely a kid person." Another John Hughes movie starring John Candy you should watch is Uncle Buck!
7:05 Mr. Heckles lived DOWNSTAIR (he hit the ceiling with a broom). It's sad I know more about tv shows than actual family. 😅
Ahhh that's it!
One of the best comedies of the 80s. John Hughes did so many fantastic films back then Ferris Buelller's Day Off, Pretty In Pink, Uncle Buck, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, The Home Alone films and many more. The plot here lends itself to great comedy scenarios with Steve Martin as the straight guy, and John Candy as the clown. Funniest part is when the car catches fire. I saw this at the cinema on release, and the audience were nearly choking with laughter. A very poignant ending when we realise Del's wife has died and he is in fact homeless. A shame too that John Candy died so young at only 44 and indeed John Hughes himself died very young only 59. Still he left a great legacy of films, of which this was one of his best.
My first airplane ride ever was in "first class". I was five. It was 1964. They bumped us up because my mom was flying with just me and my eight year old sister and there were seats available. Those were the days. Women and children first!
Bus trips in the states are the worst!! I took a bus from New Bedford Massachusetts to Charleston South Carolina and it took 36 hours all cramped up, no wonder first class Neil was all bent out of shape.
Selling shower curtain rings really gets you everywhere in life. So much "I got the hookup." Who knew.
Fun fact: Neal's house is in the same neighborhood as the house used in Home Alone
Ahhhh!
Uncle Buck brother Same director same big man. McCulley Culkin before home alone.... feel good movie all day.
I live three miles away from all The John Hughe's movies houses here in Chicago: Home Alone, Planes & Trains, Uncle Buck, 16 Candles, and Home Alone. I love just driving by them sometimes to just stop in front of them for a minute to think about the 80's growing up! (I'm 51 now).
Oh wow, it's so cool that you can just decide to do that with them at your doorstep! 🙌
Wichita is in Kansas, so south and west of Chicago, I am guessing 600 miles. Flying in the 80s was so much more relaxed. You could get to the airport thirty minutes before your flight and not feel too stressed.
Ah I'd much prefer that. I've got a fear of flying so all the waiting around doesn't help. It's like climbing to the first big drop on a massive roller coaster. Which I'm also not a massive fan of 😂
@@RyanCarrington I kind of hate it, but have adjusted somewhat through the years. Between 2011-15 I was flying a lot, was one flight that I am completely convinced nearly went into the Potomac River heading into DC. I still don’t like the physical sensation of losing altitude but I kind of have reached the place where I accept my death probably won’t Be as awful/exciting as a plane crash. Anyway, this is a lovely movie, one of my favorites.
Dylan Baker as Owen is one of the best parts of this movie. You should check out Steve Martin in The Jerk if you haven't already.
Past few reactions of this movie I noticed John Candy (Dell Griffith) has a black eye after the car fire. He was slugged in the gut by Neil not hit in the face so there must be a cut scene where he was hit in the eye.
Did you know there is a scene at the end of the credits? It is one of the few 80s movies to have one. Neil's boss is still at the office looking at the same poster boards with his turkey dinner on his desk.
Hughes shot his films on the North Shore of Chicago, so that's why the suburbs seem familiar.
That is what a noughgie is, what you demonstrated.
The gobble gobble lady at the car rental was the secretary from Ferris Bueler's Day off.
Movie reactors seeing vibrating beds in motels has become a new favorite sub-genre of mine. 😂 I live in America and I've never seen one in person either, just '80s movies.
Neil's client is still perusing the ad campaigns on Thanksgiving eve after the credits
I am so happy and impressed that you recognized David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean)
Definitely need to check out more Steve Martin and John Candy.
Let me hear your recommendations 🤙
Watch Steve Martin in The Three Amigos and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid.
Watch John Candy in Who's Harry Crumb and Summer Rental.
Uncle Buck
The Man With Two Brains for Steve. Wildly underrated and absurdly hilarious.
For John, try Only The Lonely for something a little more dramatic/romantic.
For Steve Martin: Bowfinger, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and All of Me. All three have terrific performances by the co-stars too (Eddie Murphy, Michael Caine, and Lily Tomlin respectively)
Steve Martin - The JERK, Parenthood, Three Amigos
John Candy - Uncle Buck, The Great Outdoors and Who's Harry Crumb
Flying in the 80s was WAY easier. No TSA... just a simple security check with a metal detector and a bag xray. Uou could even go to the gate if you weren't flying, like to see someone off. Also, meals on the flight were much better... and included with the ticket.. and other perks like headphones were free. 9/11 messed it all up
On your comment about NY: I'm a Californian living in Las Vegas currently, also lived in Japan, but I lived in Manhattan for a year, and lemme tell you, that was the best year of my life. It's the only place I'ever been to that lives up to the hype. The city actually feels alive. (Japanese is a VERY close second though!)
As for the film, this has been a favorite of mine since I was in middle school when it first came out. This is the movie I watch when I need my tear ducts cleaned out. It's funny, sad, and sweet, it really has it all. Glad you liked it!!!
The "magic fingers" vibrating beds were very common in cheap hotels until the late 80s. They were notoriously loud, not very pleasant, and didn't work right.
Still kinda wanna try one 😂
love this movie
This may have been said in another comment already but I always find it funny that Owen (Gus' son with the pickup) is the principal (Steven Wilkins) from Trick 'r treat.
Nice reaction, to a great movie... I love your empathy.
UNCLE BUCK is my fav JOHN CANDY film-BUG feels the same
"You're not a gnat are ya Bug...."
Holy shit! I never realized before that the gross pickup guy is Dylan Baker. Third screen role and first credit in a theatrical feature. Weird that with the number of times I've seen this movie it took me watching another dude watch it to notice. (Probably helps I saw him in "Dream Scenario" yesterday.)
Good morning from the US Oregon.. day before Day of Thanks here,, hope you enjoyed the show...
AWE SHIIIIIIIT yeah mate! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
This is always playing somewhere in the house about now.
This year it's with you and thats rad.
We never deserved John Candy. He was the best, miss him. Let us know when you do the NYC road trip, it will be fun. Great reaction.
uncle buck is also HILARIOUS...
You see the opening taxi chase scene from Kevin Bacon's perspective in a movie from 1988, "She's Having A Baby" also directed by John Hughes.
Really enjoyed this reaction! The editing was excellent, too. I've seen so many reactions to this film where the editing is all over the place and most of the good stuff is cut but you managed to get everything in.
Appreciate that man. I do my best!
Tomorrow is feast time Carrington… 🦃 🥔 🥧 yep Kevin Bacon’s Cameo shot
Great movie. John Candy was great fun to watch, and Uncle Buck and Cool Runnings are my favorites of his, though this is a close second. Steve Martin has been my hero since I was a little kid in the 70s. I have a few of his stand up albums memorized, and I just love how he can make anything funny, as well as be the straight man and still be funny as hell.
Perfect holiday movie, especially for the US thanksgiving
Did you notice at the end Del says “next time let’s go first class”? Remember Neil did go first class. He didn’t correct Del as he no longer felt superior to Del.
Wichita to Chicago is 700 miles. That's the distance from Land's End to the Shetland Islands.
That ending gets me everytime.. 🥺 John Candy was a beautiful soul.
Ahh man, it's so good!
he was gone way too soon... uncle buck is my fav john candy film
If you like this one you should check out Uncle Buck. Another John Hughes and John Candy collaboration and it's a lot of fun
Love that you have a four missed trains story in France... I have a travelling on my own, Lyon connection (seat of pants) train, euro express, language barrier story! Travel, broadens the mind and on occasion, shrinks the soul!😂 This film inspires such a unique blend of emotions and we are here for it 👏
Her first baby….come out sideways….she didn’t scream or nothin. 😂😂😂
If you're ever stuck in Wichita because of weather at the airport it has 8 gates total. Small airport, and nothing is far away in Wichita including Hotels.
Flying before 9/11 in the States was pretty simple. You could show up pretty much just before takeoff(if you only have carry-on). I dont even remember a security check in 1978(I was 5 so maybe I just forgot). I had a flight just a few days after 9-11 and none of us were prepaired for the changes. My friend is Puerto Rican but kind of looks a bit Arab and of course they went to town on him.
John Hughes was a genius. Love this reaction, just like all of them!! 🥰
He's so good!
Awww. Watching with the family tomorrow. Favorite thanksgiving movie! “ the ref” is my favorite Christmas movie. It’s hilarious. Have a great holiday!
Have fun watching!
Nice job Ryan, on your first go you noticed the shower curtain ring in the puddle. Ive seen this 100 times and never noticed it.
Great Thanksgiving movie
Omg I watched reactions to this twice today! And for the last two days too!
Guaranteed laughs!!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
My wife has never seen this movie hopefully i can show her it tomorrow on our TV
9:49 reminds me of the "sick" keyboard in ferris buelers day off
28:38 That’s a theory!
💀💀💀
Your reactions are great, you are super real in your commentary. Carry on!!!
When I was in college I was in the car with my girlfriend (she was driving) and I threw a cigarette out the window. Wouldn't you know, it blew back in and landed on her back seat. Thankfully all it did was burn a hole in the seat and it was a pretty old beat up car. She was still not happy.
❤❤ This is my favorite John Hughes Movie.
My favorite Steve Martin film is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels: Directed by Frank Oz. With Steve Martin, Michael Caine, Glenne Headly,
Saw at the theater! Classic!, when Candy turns into the devil I couldn’t stop laughing! Thanks again!
This is one of the movies that reminds me of my childhood ❤
Just noticed the Roy Rodgers in the background, another piece of nostalgia.
The house was in the same neighborhood as the one in Home alone😎
This movie is an absolute classic. I highly recommend watching 'Uncle Buck'. In my opinion, it is the finest performance of John Candy's career and the best collaboration between him and John Hughes.
Happy Thanksgiving, yankles
Uncle Buck, Uncle Buck, Uncle Buck 👏👏👏
suggestion: LITTLE SHOP OR HORRORS...lol the dentist part still kills me to this day with bill murray and steve martin...bill murray said he reenacted that whenever he'd go to the dentist...very weird and funny horror musical comedy
Yesss! Fantastic movie.
Is this a repost Ryan? Didn't you do this one already?
People are often nicer behind closed doors with their wives, where men especially feel like they can be themselves.
It reminds you of the "Home Alone" house because it IS the Home Alone house!
That explains it 😂
I like the inclusion of the trunk in the outro. I believed you, but it is a dope trunk.
Christmas movie rec…I think you’d enjoy The Family Stone. It’s hilarious, sad, and a great holiday film!
After this, please react to Uncle Buck starring John Candy. It’s hilarious and has the same feels as this movie. John Candy was a treasure.
I really love this movie. Yes, the Steve Martin character is a very hateful person throughout most of the movie. And there was no good reason given. I love when he is left one washcloth with which to dry off after the bath. And the screen where the John Candy character is riffing is so flipping funny.
They were both so good in this movie 🙌
Fantastic reaction to this bittersweet movie, the ending hits the heart. If you haven't seen, you may enjoy doing a reaction to Roxanne, starring Steve Martin (1987) it's a reimaging of the Cyrano de Bergerac story and has some very funny moments. Have a lovely weekend
I think the house was actually the same house as in Home Alone.
and uncle buck too
That was the same house as Home Alone. John Hughes used it in both movies
No. Same neighborhood.
@@tempsitch5632 there was a movie that they used the same house in. Maybe I'm thinking of another one
You should watch other movies directed and / or written by John Hughes. He made some of the very best movies of the 1980ies
This film was astonishingly edited down, the first cut being 3 hours and 45 minutes long. Great film the way that it is. Always gets me every time I see it. I think it was edited perfectly. The pacing is everything in a great movie, and some subplots have to go.
The wrong way sequence is such fantastic set-up and payoff from start to finish, with some bonus absurdity thrown in for good measure 💀 💀 😈
I never thought Neill was asshole, just a person way out of his comfort zone.
I’ve flown first class a few times & it depends on the airline how great the experience actually is. The leg room & leaning back is worth it on more than 3 hour flights. I just stick to exit row seats though. Also, NYC is unbelievably overhyped by Hollywood. I’ve been traveling at least 1-2 times per year to NYC for 15 years & even lived there for a year in Chelsea. It’s really gone downhill the last decade in every way.
Everyone keeps saying Neil was an ahole, but I disagree. Travelling can be extremely stressful. And if the sh*t that happened to him had happened to me while I was trying to get home to my family, I'd be in a foul mood too.
