To this day the memory of laid watching it for the first time by myself on a school night at 15 with John Candy's relentless totally sincere overly optirmistic delivery of " Gee , I've never seen a guy get picked up by the testicles before " To this day was probably the hardest I have ever laughed alone without been on acid or fungi ! One of my favorite DVDs. It's the best Thanksgiving movie ever.
John Hughes uses a lot of the same actors and did many films with John Candy.
My favorite scene is when they are caught between the two semitrucks. Steve turns to John and he is dressed as the devil.
John Hughes recycles the gag in, "Home Alone." While Kevin's mom is at the airport. She exclaims, "I'll sell my soul to the devil to get home." It's at that moment is the cue for John Candy to enter the scene.
The kid that breaks into the room and robs them. It was part of a scene that ended up on the cutting room floor. He was the pizza delivery guy. Then decides to come back and rob them. ✌️❤️🌹

Congratulations on finding this one! This is GenX's Thanksgiving movie the same way Love, Actually is a Christmas movie for lots of people of all ages. Steve Martin is a genius, John Candy was just as hilarious and an unfailingly NICE man.
This is reportedly Steve's favorite movie of his own.

I lived and grew up in Illinois. I used to live 10 minutes from the motel where they run the car into. On route 41 is where they did the scene you’re going the wrong way. That was near the motel. The El Rancho motel is still in business to this day

Addie, there's an old Steve Martin/Michael Cain comedy called "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" that you might like.
But, a great movie you'll LOVE is "Uncle Buck" that will make you fall in love with John Candy. (You'll understand why every Canadian's heart sank when John passed away)

At 7:00 you said "Is he [John] going to start a fire at some point?"
At 15:38 you said "Something's going to happen with their car though --with their luck."
You were right on the money both times. You predicted both things. You are prescient.
As a newbie to your channel I like your reactions. (You must have heard that a time or two.)

For some quality Steve Martin comedies, I suggest "The Jerk", "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid", "The Man With Two Brains", and "L.A. Story".
For John Candy goodness, try "Uncle Buck" and "Who's Harry Crumb?".

Great reaction Addie like always, I love this movie i haven't seen it in a long time, John Hughes at the peak of his powers, with two masterful comedians at theirs Martin and Candy. There are some fun-facts about it, this movie is inspired by John Hughes’s own hellish trip from New York City to Chicago. Before he became a filmmaker, Hughes worked as a copywriter for the Leo Burnett advertising agency in Chicago. One day he had an 11 a.m. presentation scheduled in New York City on a Wednesday, and planned to return home on a 5 p.m. flight that same evening. Winter winds forced all flights to Chicago to be canceled that night, so he stayed in a hotel. A snowstorm in Chicago the next day continued the delays. The plane he eventually boarded ended up being diverted to Denver. Then Phoenix. Hughes didn’t make it back until Monday. John Candy arrived with lots of exercise equipment in tow. On the first day of shooting, the crew brought in treadmills, weights, and other exercise equipment for Candy to use in his hotel suite. Martin said Candy “never went near any of it once.” McClurg who is probably best known as Grace, Principal Rooney’s secretary in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, played the St. Louis car rental employee upon whom Neal dropped 18 F-bombs. For the first few takes, McClurg simply raised her finger and had a standard phone conversation with a customer. Then Hughes told her to improvise talking on the phone about Thanksgiving. In the scene that goes back and forth between Neal trying to sleep next to Del clearing his sinuses and Neal’s watching TV alone in their bed, she is somehow watching She’s Having a Baby, which wouldn’t be released in theaters until February of the following year. Kevin Bacon stars in that movie, and made a cameo in this film as the guy who out-hustles Neal in getting a cab. Some people believe Bacon who was officially listed in the credits as “Taxi Racer” was playing his She’s Having a Baby character, Jake, in that scene. Another cameo was the future Star Trek: Voyager star Jeri Ryan that made her acting debut in this movie. She was one of the passengers on the bus ride and couldn’t help but laugh at Martin and Candy’s antics. In the original ending, Del followed Neal all the way home. In the train scene, where Neal thinks about Del and laughs, Martin didn’t know the camera was rolling. To get the new ending he wanted, Hughes and editor Paul Hirsch went back to look for footage they previously didn’t think would be used. Hughes had kept the cameras rolling in between takes on the Chicago train, without his lead’s knowledge, while Martin was thinking about his next lines. Hughes thought Martin had a “beautiful expression” on his face in that unguarded moment, which he inserted into the film. A version of this story ran in 2017; it has been updated for 2022. Keep up the good work.

One of my favorite all time holiday comedies. I use to watch it with my late wife every Thanksgiving with very close friends. Our friends had a farm so the turkey was home grown. My wife and would supply the rest of the fixins using their home canned goods. My wife has since passed away and so have my friends. Their son sold the farm as he was career military. Planes, Trains, and automobiles brings back some very fond memories, especially Addie's reactions. Her voice reminds me of my late wife.❤😊

@@bossfan49Yes, home grown. All their animals except the sheep and the cows 2:03 , were like pets in that they were often invited inside the house. I remember the best country ham biscuit I ever ate. Bob had a pig he called Petunia. As she was growing she spent most of her time in the house. Bob would look at her and ask, "Do you love Daddy?" Petunia would make her pig grunts and nod her head vigorously. When she reached top hog, as Bob would say, Petunia was turned into country ham, sausage, ribs, and pork tenderloin. As I bit into the biscuit, it suddenly dawn on me who I was eating. I shrieked out, "How could you!?" Bob answered back, "Unlike other pigs, Petunia was raised with love. I thought about what he said then finished my ham biscuit.

@@bossfan49Not as sorry as I was when I ate Petunia. I still feel guilty about that ham biscuit and that was almost 30 years ago. I also helped Bob slaughter 5 chickens for the freezer. I felt like Himmler or Adolf Eichmann.

I always like to think that in his Cameo, Kevin Bacon was playing his character from "Quicksilver" (which was made a year earlier), Smilin' Jack Casey.
If you haven't seen Quicksilver, I think you'd like it.
And it has one of the _best_ pieces of dialog of any movie.
    S P O I L E R A L E R T
    ----------------------------------
Gabe Kaplan: "I thought only Jews did guilt?"
Jack Casey: "You do... we do shame."
(personally, I think the world could use a bit more guilt and shame... sometimes you need to feel them to keep yourself a decent human being)

    A classic
I've seen this movie many times.
Addie please watch John Candy in the John Hughes film
(Uncle Buck from 1989) Macaulay Culkin is also in it. One year before he hit stardom in Home Alone which is another movie written and produced by John Hughes.
