I tell this story all the time.. My brother and I were on the road hustling pool at the time he died.. We were devastated, of course.. But a few days later we were driving through the rural Midwest and we happened upon a family painting on their bright red barn in white letters “We Love You John Cand,” and they were finishing the Y..
      It was amazing..

Who on Earth would stoop low enough to attack someone's dog over something like that? Pets are OFF LIMITS, full stop! Especially if they're your babies. 🐕🐕 I am SO glad this movie made it into the rotation!! This is a movie with tons of genuine laughs, but it also hits you right in the feels. Back in 1987, debit cards didn't exist, and credit cards were something people usually only had 1 of. Long before the digital age, that goofy looking contraption was what they used to swipe over a credit card, to create an imprint with carbon on multiple forms that the retailer could tear apart, giving one sheet to the customer for their records. Chicklits were square pieces of gum that were popular back in the 80s, and when rotary phones were still around, some hotels would put locks on them to prevent customers from placing long-distance calls. Since there were no cell phones, whoever owned the landline had to pay the bill, and long distance calls were more expensive back then. I am really happy that you liked this movie! I waited all day to be able to watch your reaction after work, and I was not disappointed. Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃

Hey, one important note about Del meeting Neal's wife at the end. The movie they shot was way too long and they wound up having to cut a lot out. A really important subplot disappeared in the process.
Because Neal kept coming up with excuses for why he hadn't made it home, his wife finally realized that he must be having an affair. When Del showed up in the flesh, he was living proof that Neal had been telling the truth all along. DEL SAVED THEIR MARRIAGE.

I watched this movie as a kid so many times, but it was from a VHS recording I made from a TV edit. So I didn't see the uncensored version until I was much older, and that scene at the car rental place cracked me up.
The moment Neal's wife meets Del originally had a deeper meaning to it. In the original cut, she started suspecting Neal was cheating on her, and that every time he called and told her he was with Del, she got increasingly suspicious. They decided that all didn't work very well, but yeah, when that character meets Del, she's relieved to learn Neal wasn't cheating on her.

    @RetroClassic66 Před rokem +3

First of all, Romulus is a sweet boy who has a great big heart just full of love, and he loves the peoples. His brother is a sweet boy too, and he loves to protect his family. So nobody should be saying unkind things about either doggo, because they are good puppies, period!
Now, that credit card rack machine is what was used before they introduced electronic card readers that read the magnetic stripe on the back of the card, and sometimes they’re still used when card readers are down or the system is offline or there’s some other technical issue with it. The receipt should have the dollar amount of the purchase entered on it in the space provided. The clerk then puts the card in a little space on the rack for it, puts the carbon paper receipt down over it, runs the rack handle over the card, and the handle rolls across the carbon paper receipt and copies the embossed card numbers. Then it’s taken out, the clerk hands the card back to the customer, the customer signs the receipt, and then the clerk separates the store copy and the customer copy and hands the customer his/her copy of the receipt.
The rotary dial telephone in the motel room with the lock on it? Yeah, they used to do that in some places because people abused them and ran up huge phone bills, especially calling long distance. Back in the day telephone service (especially long distance) could be very expensive. It got cheaper after the Bell System was broken up in the early 80s (Google it), and now today it’s insanely cheap compared to how it used to be.

The reference to a "Chatty Cathy doll" is a doll that Mattel toys came out with back in the 1960. The first model had 11 phrases that she would say. The second model came out with 18 phrases that she could say. You would pull a string in her back to make her talk to you but her lips didn't move. Somd of phrases she would say were please take me with you and I love you. There are a bunch of others but I can't remember them all. My friend SueAnne had one of those dolls when we were little. So she would play with it and every time you would say please take me with you. You would take her outside with us so she would hang out. I think one of the other ones was like let's have a tea party or something along those lines. I HAD MY OWN DOLL AS A KID WHICH DIDN'T TALK BUT WAS A 1,000 TIMES BETTER THAN ANYBODY ELSE'S DOLL! HER HAIR COULD BE SHORT OR IT COULD GROW ALL THE WAY DOWN HER BACK! You'd push a button in her back and it would wind her hair to pull it back upwards into her head to make it shorter. When you wanted to make it longer, you would hold on to the button again. Then just pull it out to whatever length you wanted it.THAT WAS KNOWN AS "THE CHRISSY DOLL" , YUP JUST LIKE ME! SO THERE!!! I actually STILL have it saved and tucked away somewhere. I ALSO have my DERRY DARING DOLL~She was the coolest thing on the planet! She was supposed to be the female version of Evel Knievel! She came with a motorcycle and a rip cord. You'd pull the ripcord on her motorcycle and then she'd go flying across the floor! My mother hated it and when I asked what she said no. BUT my Popo already knew how much I loved bikes. So he decided he was going to override that decision and he bought it anyway for my 8th bday! 😉❤️😎 #NewYorkGenXBLady

I just happened to read a great story about John Candy, after making this movie. Night of the Academy Awards, he invited a member of the crew for a Oscar night party. The guy thought he might meet John Hughes or Steve Martin, but got there and found out that Candy had invited all the down-the-ladder crew, and was treating them to $2000 of room service!
John Candy was just an AWESOME individual, and we lost him far too soon.

I love this movie, John Candy was a legend, and so is Steve Martin.
John Hughes based this movie on a real life experience he had a few years earlier. He flew from Chicago to New York for a one day business trip, and planned to fly home that night. But his flight was re-routed to Wichita, Kansas, and it took him 5 days to get back home to Chicago. Can you imagine what a headache that would be.

They ran the credit card through the machine that makes an impression on carbon paper using the raised letters and lumbers, and the carbon paper also makes a copy of the receipt. The customer gets one and the vendor mails the other copy to the credit card company in order to get paid.

This movie has so much heart in the midst of the madness and comedy. John Hughes knew how to tell a story and send a message in the process. There are a number of cameos from actors in Hughes previous films. It seems you recognized that. I don't have the time to share all the details on each cameo but you can look it up at your leisure. The stories that went into making this are fascinating.

Fun Fact: After the credits, Neal's boss is still at his desk analyzing the ads, his Thanksgiving dinner sitting on his desk.
New House Fact: Neal's (Steve Martin) house was also a set built from scratch, consisting of seven rooms, and taking five months to complete. It ended up costing $100,000, which angered Paramount executives, and caused turmoil on the set.
Crazy Rant Fact: The Marathon Car Rental scene is exactly one minute long from the time Steve Martin starts his tirade to the time the attendant ends the scene. In that sixty seconds, the "F" word is used nineteen times. The film would've easily been rated PG or PG-13 by the MPAA, if it weren't for this one scene.

One of the all time great comedies. Love this movie. John Candy has been in quite a few great comedies. Uncle Buck, Who's Harry Crumb? Nothing But Trouble, Only The Lonely, Splash, Home Alone, Stripes were all classics. He did many more good movies too like Delerious, The Great Outdoors, JFK (a serious role), Cool Runnings, The Blues Brothers, Spaceballs. He even had a small part in Vacation and Little Shop of Horrors that were good. There wasn't a bad John Candy movie. He was enough to make a movie entertaining regardless of the content.

That credit card thing is a "machine" (100% mechanical) used to charge credit cards before cellphones were common. On the road vendors, or merchants that didn't process enough credit cards to justify the cost, would put your card. It would then be pressed against carbon copy paper. The client would then sign the copy. The merchant would bring the slips to the bank, and be credited 60 days later.

    Matthew Lawrence plays Steve’s son.
Not the home alone house, it’s bigger then this one.
The thing he puts the credit card in is how they used to take your credit card information, they would put a slip in over your card that had 3 sheets with carbon paper between them and when you ran the slider over the card it would imprint the card info on the slips, the customer would get and the store would keep one and the last one would get sent off to the credit card company so your account really wouldn’t be deducted until the card company received the slip so it was a lot easier back then to go over your limit.
The rental car lady was the secretary in Ferris Buellers day off and has been in a bunch of other movies and tv shows, the clear eyes guy was also in the love and his co worker from the start of the movie was Ferris’s dad.
