  • Our people are beginning to feel that this is a form of marginalisation. Enugu North Zone where Nsukka is part of, has over 200 professors and in the last four efforts to find a Vice Chancellor they have come second on the list
    Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo
    Former Governor of Enugu State

This is a greedy clamour when weighed against the background that the town of Nsukka was chosen to host the university by an Onitsha man from Anambra State, Rt. Hon Nnamdi Azikiwe. I am impressed by the positions taken by the anchors of the programme to lambast and criticise the studio guest for pursuing this nativist and clannish interest. Nsukka people have been VCs in other universities in Nigeria including Michael Ọkpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia State. This is a childish and primordial sentiment that bodes ill for our ivory tower.

I commend the man's calmness. Any other person may have been provoked that the Arise team aren't getting the point he was trying to make. However, like Rufai said, it's still nativist.
But then I think it'll be unfair to totally ignore his point. After over 60 years of hosting the university, consideration should be made in that regard if and only if there's anyone from that zone or area qualified enough to to be VC of the prestigious UNN. Whoever feels he/she is qualified must do what's necessary to be appointed and not just rely on the fact that he/she is from Enugu North. The issue of zone is pointless at best.

Many of the federal Universities in Nigeria are run down. It has very little to do with indigienship but with lack of depth in excellent leadership qualities. The difficult situation the common man has faced at the hands of politicians and traditional rulers who are drawn from their localities is a lesson for all. The common man should weigh the demands of their leaders. What they need is an institution that is worth its weight in gold irrespective of who is the Vice Chancellor. An academician who wishes to be the VC should gain the support of his peers by demonstrating excellent leadership qualities. Going the route of the "son of the soil" to campaign for the VC's office does not portray him as a good leader.

This is the same man who expects Igbo-phobic Nigeria to be clapping when he says that Igbos built the major cities in Nigeria and own 70% of the hospitality business in Abuja. Which is not totally true. Igbos are all over the federation doing small and medium-sized busines but big-time industries and businesses are in the hands of Northerners and Westerners. That is the kind of response you will get from Ms Attama, a typical nwa Nsukka, very clannish in their reasoning as well. The presenter rightly said that if not for the university, nobody will even know about Nsukka now. The university brought so much development in Nsukka. Not less than 80% of the staff and students of UNN are from Nsukka. Even with the presence of the UNN, Nsukka has even refuse to develop. If not for UNN, Nsukka people probably will still be going about naked as in the olden days. The fact that Nnamdi Azikiwe from Anambra state left Anambra and brought the Univ down to Nsukka, is enough for nwa Nsukka like you and other Nsukka people that think the same to be appreciative of Zik's spirit of nationalism. No Nsukka man can do such. Like Abati said, you guys should leave university of Nigeria alone that was unfortunately sited at Nsukka and build your own University of Nsukka, appoint only Nsukka guys as VCs and also take only Nsukka indigenes as staff and students. As for University of Nigeria, there a level playing ground for anybody anywhere to become VC. Period.

The Arise team was totally hostile to the Old man, even making a mockery of him, but he remained calm and picked his words carefully like a diplomat. Some other person would have shot back. The fact is both Oseni and Abati are from another region; they won't understand the derision and subjugation the other Igbo heap on the Nsukka man such they willfully deny them their rightful positions. They believe nothing good should go to Nsukka people.-- they (Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia) see them as some kind of second class Igbo, along with Ebonyi people. You need to understand this ageold phenomenon to see from which angle the man is coming. Even if the Nsukka professor comes top by a mile, the assessors would rig them into second place due to that sentiment. But you won't blame the presenters; they don't understand. Just like many tribalists do not want to see an Igbo man in Aso Rock even if he is the saviour that Nigeria needs, so many Igbo cannot accept to have an Nsukka man on top. If it is a question of merit, Nsukka would have produced a VC long ago

You are unfair to Chief Nwodo. Go and say what you are telling him in Northern and Western Nigeria. Let Dr Abati and Mr Rufai not pretend as if they do not know what is happening in Nigeria. There is no part of Nigeria that is not nativist. Chief Nwodo cannot be the one to stop what has been going on for years. Nsukka Vice Chancellor please. They deserve it, let them get it!

Yes but is not an ibo thing , it happens everywhere in Nigeria maybe others are more diplomatic about it. Ordinarily it shouldn’t be ,but that is stark reality of things in Nigeria, the current structure makes everyone to scramble for whatever they get from FG , first to themselves and family, then to LG, state and region. It is even worse in our sociocultural setting. Acrimony and legal battles have ensued after succession of every 1st class king in the SW in the recent time.

Rufai, why do you always inject emotions and sentiments into your analysis?
I'm from Nsukka, and also, I'm a graduate of the university of Nigeria Nsukka. If you listen to Dr. Nwodo very well you will understand that yes we're not saying that it's the turn of Nsukka people to produce the next VC of UNN, but just like other people from other zones have been VCs, Nsukka people should also be supported to attain that position.
When I was in university, Prof. Ozumba from Anambra was the VC. After his tenure, Prof. Igwe from the same Anambra took over from him.
We have former deputy VC academics in the person of Prof. Ogbonna who is from Nsukka who has also contested for this same VC position many times and other professors from the zone who are eminently qualified.
Tell me they don't have all it takes to serve the university well.
They have used politics within the Southeast region to deprive Nsukka people that position, and all we ask for is a sense of belonging, not that it's our turn.
Rufai and Abati, you people misunderstood Nwodo and if you say that Nsukka should not clamour for a position of UNN VC because it is the university of Nigeria, then why do we even have power rotation in Nigeria between the North and South?
That's to give every section of this country a sense of belonging, and that is what we ask for.

That's what we're saying. UNN is a federal institution. Anybody from any geopolitical zone can be the VC. It's not limited to igbos alone. Stop being sentimental. Igbo man is was our VC in a South Western university before and heads have not rolled.. Why being xenophobic?

Recent nativitist calls by him indicate clear senility and a self-destructive nature of his recent actions.

For me I think that what the old man was saying is just for a level play ground because there are many allegations that most of Nsukka sons who show interest in vc job in UNN are always schemed out of the game. He is not saying that It should be given to Nsukka man automatically. So there is no how out of over 200 professors across Nsukka land, at least 2 or 3 people will definitely come out as the best.
