    Having these myself. I would recommend getting the two solo routers. That way you get the screen on both as well as the 4 lan ports. Some amazing bits of kit. However, it’s definitely the best out there for ease.

      Interesting. I was wondering if I should do that but I figured there may be a conflict so I went with what they had recommended which was one router and one mesh point.
      Thanks for commenting, that’s a great idea if it’s that simple to just have two routers because the additional lan ports and screen interfaces.

      Great video and thanks for the info DIY Buildouts 👍🏻. Same to you Peter (for your suggestion). I just happened to come across this video looking for answers on this amazing new fangled marvel 👍🏻😜 and liked it so much that I subscribed to your channel.
      I’m in Australia and have been looking to upgrade from my Time Capsule which has served me extremely well over the last 10 years. But as I increase the number of ‘smart devices’ on my home network/Apple eco system, I’m finding it’s time to refresh things and the Amplifi Alien looks like it will be perfect. We’re only just getting these to market down here and for $999 AUD (Router +mesh point) it’s a sizable investment.
      The thing that concerns me is that I have a 2 storey house and would really like to get a 2nd mesh point but there’s no word on if that’s going to happen I guess. I’d take Peter’s advice and buy a second Router + Mesh point but at $2k AUD for 2 bundles, I may just wait until they offer extra Mesh points sold separately. Fingers crossed they’ll do that 🤞🏻🤞🏻
      I wonder, could I add my Time Capsule (in bridged mode) wirelessly or via Ethernet cable (either attached to the Mesh point or the router?), or would the TC be incompatible?

      I don’t think you can add your time capsule in bridge mode, but if you did, you’d likely slow your network down losing the benefit of WiFi 6

    Good video well done. Little more how to setup would have been nice but that wasn't in the title so no problem. I like that you tried the Netgear orbi first.

      Thanks Kathy. Glad I was able to help you. The set up was really so easy that covering it in the video wouldn’t be necessary. I can’t imagine anybody has trouble setting up the system. The software walks you right through it and works perfectly.

      @@DIYBuildouts one question, what kinds of speeds can you get with wifi 5 devices? I currently have a 2017 ipad pro and a 2015 MacBook air, that are not wifi 6 compatible, I do have iphone 11 and 12 pro max, I know for a fact those are wifi 6 compatible, but need to speed up my older devices, thanks

      WiFi 6 has a theoretical throughput of 9.6gbps and WiFi 5 has a theoretical throughput of 3.5gbps. Now those numbers are a sum of all of the channels combined. Meaning 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz combined. The real benefit of WiFi 6 is the available bandwidth for multiple devices. When you have multiple devices connected to your home network including extra devices like Amazon Alexa‘s, thermostats, laptops, phones, smart plugs, garage doors, light switches, iPads, etc, your available bandwidth becomes an important aspect of your Internet speed.
      Think of it this way, when you’re driving down a two lane dirt road and there are 20 cars around you, it can be a white knuckle experience. Compare that to a 6 lane highway with only 20 cars on it and you start to get the idea.
      WiFi 6 allows faster throughput than WiFi 5 yes, but the real benefit in the short term is the available bandwidth in terms of “width” to accommodate multiple devices without slowing down.

      A WiFi 5 device on this amplifi alien system would get 400-600 mbps in reality. It falls under the 802.11ac category which has a theoretical throughput of 1300 Mbps but that’s on the 5 GHz channel and in reality there’s always a drop off with WiFi versus the theoretical.

    Have a large 5 bedroom house and mesh seems the way forward despite some outstanding standalone routers. This product appears to be the best mesh product so far. Would you recommend the 2 pack option or 2 separate Alien routers

    • @DIYBuildouts
      @DIYBuildouts  Před 3 lety +2

      I purchased the two pack option and I’m very satisfied with it. However, I do not hardwire any devices in my house. If I hardwired devices I would consider getting two routers as it would give you four additional ports if you needed them.

    Do you still rate this? I have a Ubiquiti Dream Machine and WiFi6 AP but thru don’t run very well for me. They need serious tinkering too with the plethora of different settings offered and five weird issues like my iPad Pro would lose DNS every time it’s sleeps. I ended up putting my original Google WiFi MESH system back in and all the issues were gone. But I am considering upgrading to this Alien system, as it’s faster and more future proof. Is it a good upgrade from the Google WiFi?

      @DIYBuildouts  Před 3 lety +1

      I wasn't upgrading from anything so I can't speak to that, I was coming from just a modem/router which provided a solid signal when close but not everywhere on my property. I can say that I absolutely love my alien system and recommend it to anyone who's interested. Setup was super easy, touch screen is awesome, app is awesome, overall a really great experience.
