- DJI's new OSMO is finally out and featuring a lot to cover. This lengthy review might seem like but much but we break down every section so it's easy see what the DJI Osmo is capable of. We tackle the 4K video quality, the low light performance, the hardware, DJIGo app, audio, slow motion, and even various gimbal modes. All of this is covered with visual examples from spectacular locals around southern California from multiple perspectives.

This is the best osmo review I've seen so far. Great pace and content.
+Camilo Pineda (Fun2Dad) Really appreciate this. Thanks for taking the time to say this :D
+MarkHawkCam Seconding this! Really tight and watchable review, none of DigitalRev's faffing around! :D
I love that you linked chapters so I didn't have to sit through instructions that I've previously learned. Thanks for the great video friend!
By far the best review of Osmo so far. I think most reviewers are making too big of a deal about built-in audio. No one complains about drone audio right? Not a tough job to use a secondary audio recorder in pro projects. Having recently packed motorized slider and a small job around on a shoot, I can see this lightening the load considerably.
Best Osmo review on youtube.
Love your vids. Always very thorough. Lets sit back and watch this.
Thanks for taking the time to do this review 😁
Mark, I respect your reviews for being above "brand passion". When reviews are made by people too committed emmotionally / financially to a specific brand, it is difficult to be straight. Your reviews are very technical and direct to the point. Keep doing that !
+Alexandre Takamatsu Thanks for the kind words :D Means a lot to me. Tell your friends ;)
Great, extensive review! Lots to learn from this before actually taking the decision as to whether to buy the camera or not.
was waiting for you to review that osmo!
Great review! Thank you for sharing..
Great review!
This was a great video thanks a lot! 👍
In case you were wondering.. the spider is on the middle left side of the screen 12:27.
Jelly!! Nice review man!
+Jeremy Sciarappa Thanks J man :D
Best review I have seen so far. I'm thinking of getting one of these and this has helped immensely.
+marcandsebe Glad it's helped :D
I have a 7D2 and Eos M3, plus Rode lavalier mic and Rode Videomic Pro. The later is powered, so this could be used with the Osmo. It fits on a hot shoe though, so how could this be mounted?
I was thinking of getting a 3 axis gimbal for the M3, but it seems a lot of messing about setting it up, hence looking at buying the Osmo.
I purchased an Osmo for personal and business use. I am by no means a professional, but the Osmo has been great for me. I used it to film the inside of park models we have for sale. All videos on the Ocean View Trailer Sales CZcams channel were recently filmed with the Osmo. Great review, you got it all right. One thing I would like to see DJI add is the ability to make small adjustments in the level of the camera. When you are filming things with straight lines, like the front of a trailer, it would be nice to adjust to precisely meet that line.
Thanks, learn a lot about my osmo.
Very nice video, lot of info,, thanks
Hi Mark, thanks for your review, i already got one. But there is something may be you can help me with, when i used my iPhone 6, with the dji go app, the orientation can be change whether its portrait or landscape, but when i switched to my iPad, the orientation stays at landscape, even though the orientation button is unlock. may be you can help. thanks.
wow, great video!!!thank you!!seriously so good!!
and I'm sorry but i couldn't see the spider!!haha
nice review! gonna buy it :)
+ed Caine After you've had sometime with it, let me know what you thought.
What were your camera settings set at when you were filming at 8:20 ?
Very nice video and awesome review, thank you! Also I noticed that right around 11:00 that the parking structor you were in was in Hollywood. Nice! lol I lived there for 6 years. Cheers brother
+Gregory Curtis Good ol Archlight ;)
So that's where you were?! I wasn't too sure. Although I worked right across the street at Drai's Hollywood on the rooftop of the W for 4 years lol. I love your videos man and I'm sure i could learn a ton from you. I was paralyzed a little over a year ago so now a days I have a lot of time n my hands and I've been really focused on cinematography. It would be cool to maybe link up one day. Please feel free to shoot me an email gregcurtis83@gmail.com
Cheers!
Thanks for the video mate!love itI had a gopro4 black, do you think it's a good switch to dji osmo?I am more concern about the quality of image and video. In your honest opinion, which one is better?the selling point of the osmo is stabilized but gopro selling point is quality. I need advise on this. As I am a semi videographer.thanks!
Same was already said but I will say it again, best review of the DJI OSMO to date. Thank you for sharing all of this. I am about to launch my CZcams channel and still unsure on this purchase or just getting the new iPhone 6S Plus with OIS for my gear reviews and general walking around travel stuff. Thoughts? I know the OSMO has better stabilization with the 3-axis gimbal but the audio is terrible and I am not quite sure I wanna walk around with a big selfie stick haha. Thanks!
+Jordan May Thiss is a bit hard. Big benifit to the OSMO is you have a live display that you can rotate and see yourself, lots of auto functions, and easy to use gimbal. However I'd maybe recommend investing in a Canon 60D or whatever the newesy Canon T3i is. These would be stronger and reliable cameras you could count on for reviews. You image sensor would be way bigger and things like audio and battery life have lots of options. The OSMO is still new and in a year or two, their will be a much better version. I'd really suggest starting with a DLSR you can use for 5-8 years and pick up things like the OSMO as your channel grows. My opinion though, we all got to find what works for us ;) best of luck
+Frosted Penguin I can't reply to you directly because of your privacy settings. Used the Canon 5D Mark II with a 50m lens.
Great video! You deserve 10k likes instead of 350
+TennisSamurai W. Thanks for the feedback. Maybe one day I'll win the internet lotto and have something that goes viral ;)
What a great Review thanks.
I am looking to get one. I was trying to find an Alternative to taking my 5d MK 3 away on holidays all the time. do you think this would take its place ?
I can't imagine its really going to replace the Quality L Glass and Low Apature lens is it ? Im just getting sick of lugging around big equipment.
So thinking a good combo is going to be 5dMk3, 50mm F1.2 and 20mm F2.8 and the Osmo. What's your thoughts ?
Thanks
tim
+Bluetang Really depends on the trip. The OSMO makes it easier for me to capture some smooth and great shots that I'm not really getting normally with the 5D. Can quickly toss it in a bag like Im doing today and hop on a plane. Also does a good job editing into DSLR clips. However the 5D is going to capture you photos that will stand the test of time and it's full image sensor has tremendous benefits as well. The big things to consider with the OSMO is battery life and the battery life of your smart phone. If you plan on all your shots being one setting, you can save battery life on the phone by not using it, but most of the time you'll want it on there. I'd consider it but also maybe consider a smaller body DSLR too. I've heard some good things about Sony's A7 DSLR line up. Much smaller then the 5D but no gimbal.
I solved the audio problem using a Sony ECMCS3 Omni-directional mic. Much much better if you're using it for vlogging. You can find the real world test (while I walk thru NYC) on my channel if you're curious how it sounds.
+Savi You Aldryn from FlytPath had a really clean setup for it as well. czcams.com/video/x25MW0DqCqE/video.html
+MarkHawkCam That's pretty slick, I have to try that with my LensHopper, Thanks!
I use my Sony PCM D100 to record my audio and sync it after I finish my shot with the reference mic in the osmo XD
Awesome, I saw this couple of days ago on one of Casey neistats vlogs. Nice video.
Great video. I am finally looking to purchase the Osmo soon because they are offering a Summer Sale on their website, BUT my question to you is do you think it would be better to wait until a new version comes out and a price drop on the current version? $600 is about my price range and right now on DJI website i can spend just under that price, so I am really leading toward the purchase.
Any advice would help, thank you!
Hard to say. Honestly unless it's a new release, July and Aug have always been the worst times to buy. Not sure we'll see a new OSMO this year but if we do Sept-Oct would be that time frame. It's when most Action Cams come out for the holiday season. I don't have any inside info but since the OSMO was the first camera in it's class at DJI, hard to predict what the release schedule would be.
Is it possible to charge the OSMO while using it? Any charging ports that could be used with a portable charger to extend life? Thanks for the review!
+Ben Hagarty (BenReal) There is a USB port but I don't believe so. I will check it out this week though. Doing a lot of work with it so I'll see what that does while powered on.
What you do to fix the over exposure from the sun light coming in the camera
General film in a Flat color space and tweak the values myself later to leave more range in the whites.
So Ive been on the fence of buying this because I have this one question that no other videos seem to touch upon. Are you able to get low angle shots with the camera tiled upwards? So its a low shot looking up? Is that possible with any of the modes? I notice all the shots everyone shows are all leveled shots, or it tilts up or down then ends up leveled. But none of them are constant low shots while tilted upwards for a duration of time. If the osmo does this, you just might have sold me on it!
Rotates up about 15-20 degrees up from low angle. Here is a photo imgur.com/a/F6ifm
If this helps and you're feeling super generous and plan on buying through amazon, please check out the referral link below the video in the more info section. If you have any other questions feel free :D
Thoughts on using this professionally? Might get this so I have an extra cam as well as a "glidecam". I'd love to get the x5 version, but it's way too expensive for me.
+williamdlc3 There are a few comments here in the discussion about using it on set along with results. It's possible to get some good to great results but on the limitations of a sub full sensor camera. Just need to be aware of the pros and limitations of this camera. There are some really good on set discussions though and would suggest reading through a few.
What kind of gimbal is your GoPro on in this video and how does it compare to the Osmo? I have a GoPro 3+ and have been back and forth which is a better option. (I don't have a back monitor so would want an attachment for my phone that I can connect to the GoPro as well).
+Samantha Lloyd Dshot Z-ONE. I'll have some more info on my thoughts and comparisons next week.
+Samantha Lloyd check out the z1-pround. I found it to be the best out of all 3rd party gimbals so far. It beats out the FY tech gimbals, compared to my buddy's, and it looks as stable as the OSMO. Not to mention it lasts all day and charges your GP at the same time. The battery is about 5000mAh compared to OSMO 1000mah
I know what the X3 camera can do from using it with the Inspire 1 but I'm disappointed they removed the amount of control you got over your video quality vs the stock version for the Inspire 1. Why did they take away control over sharpness, manual white balance, saturation, etc.
Hey Mark! Great review. I am seriously considering getting an OSMO, but a few things are holding me back. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the comparison between the dynamic range of the OSMO vs the GP4 Black. Thank you sir!
+Tuan Vu filming it now actually along with the Sony X1000V. Just a tough comparison. Hoping to have it up by Wednesday latest.
MarkHawkCam awesome thanks!
will putting the camera in standby mode help prevent it from heating up so much?
+Kyle Camacho It will. It pretty much turns the unit off. Basically only keeping the wifi portion on to tell it to start back up. Takes about 7-8 seconds to fully wake up and start recording.
+MarkHawkCam - great job with this review, and thanks! I was looking at this as an alternative to the Ronin + SLR combination to shoot real estate interior videos. Do you think it would be a good choice? Cheers!
+Jack Mead While it's steady you might run into some minor issues with it's field of view. Since it's narrower 94°angle, tight spaces might not showcase to well. It's possible it work out great but just keep its narrow field of view in mind. We'll have a comparison with the Hero4 line of cameras in a week or two so you can see the difference.
I have a 7D, Osmo, & GoPro Hero 3 White. I was going to upgrade to a Hero 4 Silver cause of 4K but then I didnt want to invest in getting a Feiyu 3 Axis Gimbal. Next thing you know Osmo came out and I bought one. Saved me more money and I dont have to buy another dslr body as a second body or gopro. Osmo is going to be a game changer once they get a few things fixed. Another good idea is the to buy the DJI Universal Mount($20) if you want to run a mic. I plan on getting the new Rode Video Micro Mic($60) which will probably do so much better than the built in mic.
+nwkphotoxfilms Just to clarify on something you said about the Hero4 Silver. It does 4k but at 15fps. It's fairly useless for most users unless you are in very specific cases. Like landscape shots with little to no movement. Anyway thanks for the Universal mount suggestion. Waiting for ours to come in.
+MarkHawkCam yes I know it does 4K but I don't want to buy a feiyu gimbal for my GoPro since it basically fails within a few months
Looks as if this camera does not come with a usb cord. Is there a port on the osmo in which I could plug one in so I can save pictures to my pc? I dont want to buy mini ad adapter I rather buy a cord.
You could, but no cable isn't included. If you buy a Lexar 633x, it comes with a USB 3.0 dongle adapter which has a much faster transfer speed and easier to keep plugged in your computer at all times. Check the more information section this video for a link to see it.
Why are you saying there are two fans?I happened to have a look inside, and I didn't see two fans. I wasn't looking for fans though. The fan is on the bak and blows on a metal block and it also flows air on the top heat sink and out the camera. You can see the heat sink on the top.
+Richard's World *Two fan speeds. The normal usage hum then the high speed "we need to cool this off now!" speed.
Thanks for the fine review!
Are you sure that the mic-port is powerless?
+Torsten Schmidt I heard it's a powered port.
+Torsten Schmidt +Slightlyevil Just to follow up, bought an external mic last weekend and this jack IS indeed providing power for it.
It can power a small mic like a rode videomicro
Does it have an autofocus for a selfie video?
I mean for vlogging ..
Has a locked focus. However its rather soft up close. I'd watch 6:30 where I go over my concerns using it as a selfie stick.
How can I get rid of frame lagging while recording using my iPhone 6s plus? Very frustrating n annoying
+Jay Perey You mean the delay the camera signal being sent to the phone? Over wifi this might be the best possible. DJI has a tech called light bridge for fast transmission from drones to receivers but it's expensive and acts like a mini live satellite signal.
That being said, if you are doing long recordings you might see less of a delay if they are shorter or you bump your quality down. However I also suspect both of these things might not help to much. What you're are really looking for is a hard connecting via wire. I'd love to see something like that going forward.
Great review! Even with the 45min battery life & 3.5 jack not having power, you would put this up there with DSLR?
I wish DJI left mini USB or something so user can connect external battery. 1 hour is really short :(
+ishii-san In terms of function. I would probably only take the OSMO to events and places similar to my DSLR compared to where/use my GoPro. Quality it good but not up to par with a 5D.
+MarkHawkCam I have Sony A6000 & GoPro 4 Hero black, and I'm still on the sidelines wondering if OSMO is worth it.
+ishii-san Trying to film a side by side with the OSMO. It's tough... lots of factors to consider. Hoping to have something up by end of this weekend to early next week. 100% before Thanksgiving.
Alway shoot in manual for best quality and p.s. i key frame option for video will be available in a future update
On the subject of tripods- the mounting hole on the side of the Osmo is threaded for a tripod screw - a small Monopod head will attach there quite happily, so I'm going to be trying out using a Monopod to extend my reach with Osmo :)
+stuntpenguin Chime back in and let me know how that went. I have a spare one laying around in a box I might try it out with.
+MarkHawkCam OK, will do - the monopod head I have happens to be a little too large, however the whole setup gives me an idea- you could theoretically sandwich a little "adapter" block between the normal phone mount and the screw-in on the side of the Osmo to give you a way of mounting other things.
Hi and thanks for the review.
I have tried to contact DJI about this but that is a useless exercise.
As I understand it, there is no way to adjust the aperture on the Osmo with the X3 camera. Aperture adjustment is only available with the X5.
So, HOW is it possible to have 24fps, 1/50th shutter speed, ISO100 and a constant f/2.8 aperture without severely overexposing in bright sunlight???
I would love it if you could shed some light on this.
Hi there,
I have experienced the same problem in regards to the aperture not being able to be adjusted. It is incredibly annoying. Unless we upgrade to the X5 at a cost then the only way I'm hoping to get round it is by this:

If you use ND filters it stops it up or down depending on how you look at it.
+Jim Suttelle IKR! ND filters dimes down the sky so you won't over expose
Can I use a iPod on this since I don't want to kill my battery on my phone
+Keron Jones an iPod touch? Yes
+Keron Jones You just need to make sure you sign in the first time to activate it.
What did you film the shots of the Osmo with
+Frosted Penguin Canon 5D Mark II on a 50mm lens. When we were out in the field, Hero4 Silver.
+MarkHawkCam Thanks
i was doing some research, the 3.5mm jack IS a plug in power jack.
+Blaze Collie source?
+MarkHawkCam should also say that i really loved this video review. :3
+Blaze Collie Thanks :D I'll look into this but I was told the opposite when I asked. I'll reach out again for clarification and add an annotation to the video to correct it.
MarkHawkCam right on! keep up the good work! love the reviews! Gonna snag the Osmo up in a few months!
+Blaze Collie Just to follow up, bought an external mic last weekend and this jack is providing power.
Can the camera zoom at all? If so, what is the zoom range?
+Scott Owens It can in the next firmware update. It's a pinch zoom on the phone. Not sure if it can do it while recording but it very well might. Lots of cool new updates they are beta testing right now.
Thank!
+Scott Owens I think the next firmware update is going to give digital zoom, so don't expect good quality.
You can zoom in post production
Everyone pretty much acknowledges that the internal audio isn't good. That irks some folk a great deal, while others are looking for odd contraptions to mount a mic, or have an external audio recorder. But I've ordered the DJI straight arm and universal mount...will allow a cold shoe shotgun mic and phone in a clean light set up. And I'm getting extra batteries. I'm frankly more concerned about my phone battery life. Gonna try an older phone I have on hand to use iPod style for wifi and save my "real" phone.
+OpenDGuitar Right there with you. Battery life for the phone and device concerns me more. Waiting for the batteries to come back in stock.
$650.. pfft thatd be nice!
Because our Australian dollar is total shit at the moment
The Osmo cost us $1099!
A huge difference :(
+MarkHawkCam
i want date and time to appear in recorded video can you please help me out
thank you in advance
i have to say those things are still to pricey. thats the main reason i just build one myself. you can find a small video of it on my channel. i came here to see what the osmo offers. think i like it more than the gopro stuff. anyway, i never was a fan of stuff thats only compatible to itself. its good that the gopro camera shape now is some sort of a standard and you can chose whatever you want. good 1080 cams are so cheap now. there is allways room for improvement, but look on my gimbal. like in my video it cost me under 100€ and two days of work, camera included. and it even looks nice ;)
+MarkHawkCam I notice all face shots are out of focus, compared to Gopro's selfie video it is day and night. It renders the footage from Osmo useless in vlogging or youtube video
+Frank Luo Yeah I bring this up in the video.
casey neistat was the first one i seen use this
As a Pro Cameraman and Director for numerous UK and US broadcasters including BBC and TLC we've just been using it and here are my 2 pennies worth:
PROBLEMS:
- Can't adjust aperture- Low light ability very bad with ISO compensating and thus causing gain.- Tempramental starting up and regularly slow connection to phone.- When doing timelapse there is no egg time function.- When doing timelapse the gimbal doesn't stay FIXED. It seems to move around on playback even when you lock it.- Sound is awful.- Unable to manually change colour balance.- No in-built timecode function.
PROS/BENEFITS:- Cheap 4K and steadycam- Can shoot in D-Log- Zebras for over exposure- Enables very cool character establishers and walking shots, especially when you spin around contributors.- A cheap mini-jib for GVs and B-Roll.- It's not meant to be an "A" camera where you shoot your whole show on it, what it gives is quite nice cutaways and raised production value which cut very nicely in the same way drone footage does.
In time I'll upgrade to the X5r.
The X3 is good value for money.
Once they're delivered I'm going to try out the polorizer and the nd grads. If they don't work then we'll have to see in regards to over exposure and compensating with shutter speeds (that for me is the OSMO's major problem).
But overall is is a nice little camera that does what it says on the tin and it is broadcast quality as it shoots at 60mbs.
+David Warren Just wanted to address that I believe there is a firmware fix coming for the timelapse drift. I think some of the other issues are being tweaked or acknowledged as well but some of the beta notes for the camera talked about the timelapse specifically. Agree with a lot of what you say but we'll be doing a full side by side here in a few weeks with other action cameras. Debating on putting aganst a 5D but that might be a tough under taking.
+David Warren also forgot to mention thanks for taking the time to write up all this. I know it'll be a big help to a lot of others looking to find out more about the OSMO.
DJI killed GoPro sales, not in all categories, but still!
man I wish the Osmo had a closer focus
+Recon9143 Hoping a lens filter will come out to address that soon.
+MarkHawkCam Yeah me too. Hopefully by this summer! Do you know think by any chance they could fix it in a firmware update? I know it's 99% the lens but maybe since it's the same drone lens they did something with the focus?
+Recon9143 Wouldn't want to say never but chances would be slim. I'm assuming it's a limitation of the current glass on there. Companies like PolarPro in the past have done a good job making work around though. Would reach out to them maybe and let them know there's a demand for this sort of thing.
+MarkHawkCam I mount my osmo to a extenable gopro selfy stick using the handle bar mount. It works great. instagram.com/p/BDweK92GFsB/?taken-by=lakesideproductionschannel
i can't see the spider :(
+Hasscfc She's there... watching
+MarkHawkCam took me 10 minutes to find, hahah. Why don't you upload in 4K ?
Not all the cameras we used to cover this are in 4K and some of the settings we show off aren't as well. Also still searching for a good codec for proper 4k uploads vs quality.
Small jib
Thanks for the detailed interview ! However... are you really, seriously putting Osmo on to the same level as a DSLR ? Like the 5D ? Come on... I've seen all the tests here on YT, and the OSmo is nowhere near to a DSLR. It is in the same league as the GoPro at best .... oversaturated, oversharpened, and very blocky picture quality.... The more reviews I've seen the more doubts came into my mind.... what is it aimed for ? As a travel camera it should be great but way overpriced....
+Greg Paradi - Gergely Paradi I think I maybe didn't make this as clear as I hoped. I'm not comparing it in terms of image quality but more to their functions and roles for you as a film maker. (Though I am finding the quality really good in most conditions). I'm trying to imply the role you use the OSMO is more similar how you'd normally use a DSLR. I don't think this is a practical camera on a surfing trip similar to how I wouldn't find a DSLR to be. I do find it extremely useful for a wedding though, a boating trip, a hiking trip. I'm comparing the OSMO role in your tool bag. It shares a lot of the same roles with the GoPro but I put it more in with roles you'd typically assign for a DSLR.
WHY DIDN`T YOU TEST IT UNDERWATER?¡¡¡¡
I know right? Sea Spiders mainly.

Your girlfriend's setup is more interesting. GoPro is more ideal for outdoor filming while traveling, even if you have to pay $300 more so you don't wreck and lose $600 breaking the DJI.
