"Sony forces company to kill their game" is a much more apt title.
This. I imagine the guys/girls over there are just as upset, if not moreso than the community. They just don't have a choice here.
Bullshit sentiment. Arrowhead knew what they were agreeing to when they signed with Sony.

The irony is that they could have just had a pop up appear without forcing people to do it and players would have done it. Hell they could have added an in game reward and people would have done it. Sony based in California are complete amateurs.
Holy that would be so much better! Wish they went with you idea
They sold the game to alot of people who cannot make PSN accounts. This would have come up anyway
Putting in the choice for players wouldnt give sony what they want: all the data. Not some, but all of it.
They are a greedy big tech company. Greedy for money and power.
And data is power to them. Power over all the users.
The time of choice isnt anymore. It is the time of corpo -demand.
They want and all users have to answer and play along.
People are naturally fed up by this.
Especially after the censoring controversy of stellar blade. Also by sony.
They have the best timing ever ^^
Except people are forgetting that this has been implemented since day one. It's even shown on the games steam page. The only reason it wasn't forced, was because it was bugged, so they made it optional for a moment.
So anyone who was shocked when they turned it back on, is dumb or oblivious.
But it's not happening now anyway, so everything is fine.

Sad to see just how quickly a beloved game's reputation can be easily flipped upside down because of one decision that was made by the parent company.
yea and it sad some of these players are blaming it on the actual devs.
Its not one decision, it is an indication of their thought process and respect for the consumer.
You have a loyal fanbase for a company who has made a great product... what does that company do, it associates itself with a third party and their fuckery... and when challenged, basically tells their consumers to get fucked.
Thanks for your money, so long suckers.
People dont like that and they feel like setting some standards, "no this is what we purchased, this is what we want, we dont want this in the future". How can a consumer actually do that? negative reviews and refund requests.
@@MegaBusterDude mb because actual devs tried to pull out "We are separate and independent" card and decided to not mention it beforehand? So it wasnt mentioned cuz of "tech problems"...? Do u want me to believe Sony didnt had this thing agreed from the start?
@MegaBusterDude To be fair, they just sat back and LET Sony ruin their company. Should have seen it coming and should’ve worked with another company. They sold out and could have been the golden example of Gaming but didn’t.
@@MegaBusterDude True, some are blaming the wrong party. However, Sony doesn't have a place they can go on and easily review negatively or vent about the issue. Negative striking the Steam page reviews is the most apparent and abundant way to bring light to the issue and show how many people disagree with it or are impacted by it. The reviews alone don't qualify as "blaming the devs," given that context.. but I also have seen quite a few people actually word for word blaming the devs.
I see three possible reasons for why Sony wants players to do this.
1. Selling the account data to advertisers (this is the most likely reason imo)
2. A big jump in PSN accounts looks good to the shareholders
3. In the future they can require PS+ for all PSN accounts thus getting players who are exclusively PC to pay anyway
4. By having their account system in place they can reroute in game shop purchases away from Steams system so don't have to share any of the profits from the MTX
It’s #2
Everything is about the mogul moves
Its a Mix of 1 and 2 most likely 3 would kill the entire sony brand
It’s mostly to ban cheaters without having to go through valve.
8:33 Hey Lud, I’m in corporate marketing so in my opinion it’s not the data from the PC players that’s valuable it’s about all the helldiver 2 PC players that don’t have a PSN account. Number of new PSN accounts is what matters on a quarterly update spreadsheet. It’s all about milking this great game. Trying to bring as many players over to PlayStation and generate growth from there
the worst part too are the bootlickers in the discord saying that sony being hacked every other month isnt that big of a deal
Potential Sony motivations:
#1 Millions of new PSN accounts (essentially boosting numbers for shareholder)
#2 Selling data
#3 Banning accounts without needing steam approval
#4 Start of mandatory PSN for all sony games on all platforms
#5 Troll pc gamers
#6 Introduce payed PSN subscription.
New PSN accounts is a big one, they want more people with accounts and their shit being more integrated so they're not irrelevant to PC gamers. Its alllll corporate bullshit like you said for the shareholders. It doesn't really matter to me since I have a PSN account but its the premise of it thats a giant middle finger.
@@LookHereMars lol if they make us subscribe after purchasing a game we about to have a problem.

EDIT: I was wrong in my gut feeling on this. The CEO said they knew for 6 months and it was his decision to expire the grace period. It has been said that the requirement was still Sony's decision.
The CEO kinda made it sound like it was 100% Sony on this, which I believe. I don't think this is on the devs, this is Sony being a garbage company. Along with the steam reviews, the discord and reddit are both on FIRE right now. Sony just lit a match and are burning the fucking house to the ground with this.

imo review bombing would just put the shit on dev instead of sony, if you want hit sony hard hit the investor of sony or sony itself. otherwise they just gonna let it sit out as people usually have memory of goldfish just saying.
@@danieltafoya9841 though the question would be wether or not the lawyer even saw that as a problem in the first place. A lawyer knows allot about laws but not necessarily a lot about game dev. A lawyer will look through a list of requirements and look through a lens of legality whereas a dev looking through that same list will see it through a lens of game development. a lawyer might agree to unrealistic expectations simply because he doesnt know that he doesnt know what itll take to actually develop those things.
The worst thing about the Helldivers situation is that higher-ups at Sony could see the review bomb, think "well shit people really don't like it anymore. Time to close up shop" and ruin the devs that we claim to be in favour of!
the devs themselves said that review bombing and refunding is the only way to really get the point across and that that's the best course of action

Sony is probably trying to inflate their numbers to make themselves look more appealing to investors. "Look how many people signed up for a PSN account last quarter!"
yep
and sacrificing their game, even half its players, is worth the short term "gains" and they probably will get away with it
Nah Sony wants more data on people to sell to companies and advertisers basically it's free money every time someone signs up.
As if they werent already winning the console market
Unlike Helldivers, the recent update for DarkTide 40K is awesome 😁
Any publisher that requires your data after you've already paid them is not to be trusted with said data
every company lol
You got several IRL instances of this happening, like with security systems that were securely able to monitor your house, but required your connection to a third party afterward which basically bricked it. Some of those security systems even became easily hackable due to needing a direct and insecure connection to a server, which people playing with children in their living room found out when someone spoke through their camera saying they were going to die that night. Of course, you need to dig for examples as god forbid some company owns up to such slipups, usually opting to take the "that never happened" approach.
@@Suzuki_Hiakura Having security cameras inside your house feels simply wrong. Probably a US thing, i've never seen it here in Europe.

@@NoName-tr3vs Figured it was just a US thing, though I haven't heard of cameras being elsewhere besides living areas and the entry ways, likely for insurance and video evidence in case of a break in or fatal shooting to prove you were not at fault. Still though, security for devices is critical.
They required it before you paid them and every console brand does this.
Good news, Arrowhead fought back.
I'm glad to see a huge streamer/youtuber covering this. Seeing funny arguments "just change your region or use a VPN bro!", what they don't understand that the affected users are asked for all their personal info, including an ID and biometric scan to verify your account, and people have been banned after linking their Steam to their PSN account using a VPN. Hopefully the backlash will at least make Sony reconsider the countries outside their PSN support.
Wouldn't surprise me if it's to boost "registered playstation users" to make it look like Sony is getting even more popular so that shareholders want to invest more money into their company.

It's unfortunate really because this wasn't an Arrowhead or Helldivers team decision, it was a Sony decision.
Arrowhead decided to get into bed with Sony, "sold their soul to the Devil". You don't get to blame the Devil while hiding the contract. That's pathetic nonsense. One more thing about Sony accounts. Lots of "Baltic countries" and "stan" countries were making russian accounts prior to 2022. Many of the residents of those countries speak russian and it was a convenient way to have a PSN account in a "unsupported" country. Guess what happened to their accounts after Sony left Russia and banned russian accounts on PSN? There is no option to change your account's country on PSN. All those people who do not live in Russia, who may actually live in a NATO country (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia) got their accounts banned as well. They cannot buy anything from a PSN store, they cannot pay for PS Plus, which is required for online play, etc.
I can understand if one of those people would review bomb a game that requires a Sony account, months after purchase.

He had it created with "Russia" set as country of residency cause he speaks russian ALOT better than english (which is, BTW, very common in former USSR countries). By the 2022 his account had hundreds of digital purchases, thousands of trophies and hours of gameplay. Now his account is a dud. No access to PSN store, to online, to cloud saves. And no way to change account's country without losing it all. When you try to change it through Sony's support, they either outright refuse and tell you to create a new one, or they inform you that you will lose cloud saves, trophies and digital purchases. He was, for all intends and purposes a "sonyboy". Sold his PS5 and moved to PC after that. He is now furious that Sony is forcing him to either link a PC game to a "dead" account or to create a new one in "fake" country, cause Lithuania is still not supported in PSN.
@@yehoshuas.6917 You can unlink your payment method from old account and link it to newly created one. But this new account will still technically break Sony's TOS. And there is no way to transfer your cloud saves, trophies and digital purchases to new account.
Funny thing is that Sony OFFICIALLY sells PS5 and physical copies of games in many of those unsupported by PSN countries. Not through resellers or "grey imports". Officially, by Sony themselves.
Estonians were making finnish and UK accounts, not russian ones.
When I bought the game, I remember having the PSN as optional.
Now it has become mandatory, and I am having a dilemma of refunding the game because:
1. I am in one of the unfortunate countries for PSN/Sony to screw over.
2. I have invested both time(194hrs) and in-game purchases(35USD or 2kPHP) that I have no idea if it can be refunded fully or not.

Honestly, IMO, the answer is probably because of the stock price. Sony can then say: "See we have this many active PlayStation users" (even if they don't possess a PlayStation and play on PC).
The logic from the community manager always baffles me. If it's such a "trivial" thing to force people to setup, why is it required in the first place?

the helldivers community managers have shown in the past that they have a severe lack of professionalism as well. they are definitely assholes which puts a massive dampener on a great game.
I think they may have been trying to incense the community. Lighting the match to encourage the review bombing.
Something can be simultaneously trivial and useful
I'm really glad to see people outraged over what's a relatively minor thing.
Gamers have let massive corporations shit on them over and over again and the tide is finally turning. Sony might be getting a bit unjustly blamed as the straw that broke the camel's back, but it's broken, and we are pissed. And all that's getting unleashed on Sony.
I for one am tired of all the bullshit that's "not a big deal". Well if it's not a big deal, then stop fucking doing it.
I agree, I would guess this is getting more traction, despite being a relatively minor thing in the grand scheme of shitty practices from major devs/pubs, is because Helldivers is massively popular and things that are worse on other games just have a smaller audience overall.
its also getting unleashed on arrowhead, which kinda sucks but ur point still stands. Sony has seemingly no reason to do the account linking
Well some countries don't have psn support so they won't be able to play
People who say it 'isn't a big deal' are either coping or just don't fully understand the situation. Their are multiple reasons this sucks, but the most egregious part of this whole thing by far is that it means players in countries that aren't supported by PSN won't be able to play the game anymore, especially since you can get banned for using a VPN to sign up for a PSN account. All those people are basically going to be banned from playing the game MONTHS after buying and way after any chance of a refund has passed by.
I completely agree. I have about 200 hours in the game, but I uninstalled it and changed my review because of this. This isn't something that effects me personally, I have a PlayStation account and could easily link it. It's about the principle of them removing people's right to play the game, just for them to get some data. It wouldn't have been so bad if they had just not allowed users in unsupported countries to buy the game to begin with, but Sony doesn't care, that's free money.
I hate how the helldiver devs have been handling this. Its not entirely their fault it seems but theyre being downright mean to people who are rightly upset, thats outright unacceptable.
thank you, can't wait for the sequel to this vid
Shame the game is getting review bombed. Arrowhead doesn't deserve it but it's the best way to send Sony a message
There are better ways.
thats what im thinking, i understand why its happening and im not sure if there is a better way of doing this like idk, maybe going after sony directly? but idk how im just a mogul watcher.
@@vectusvalorian What like petitioning Sony? We all know that doesn't work no matter how many people signed.. the only way it would work is if it affected Sony's bottomline.
@DanteVerde-pt9zc when you need to fix a school issue, do you also beat up the director's child?
It's good to be review bombed, it might be the ONLY way Arrowhead can actually provide DATA to Sony because Japanese companies are known to not walk back on decissions unless they are huge fuck ups, and this is a huge fuck up. Not to mention that this is borderline illegal, being in "Steam page" doesn't give them legal rights to change how a game functions, it's the Terms of Agreement, aka EULA, which did not mentioned the enforcement of PSN. You can pretty much take on court this shit in half of the countries in Europe.
I could swear that the warning about a third-party linking requirement on Helldivers' Steam page was added after release, but I can't confirm that because the Wayback Machine is having trouble with Steam's age restriction (EDIT: apperantly it was as confirmed by the CEO). It's especially fishy because Helldivers 2's EULA doesn't mention at any point that you need or will eventually need a PSN account to play, while e.g. Red Dead Redemption 2's EULA and Rainbow Six Siege's EULA both mention that you might need or will be forced to create an account in order to play.
And the "but the pop-up at the beginning..." argument is quite funny. Many games ask you to create an account at first to access features like cross-progression (e.g. Larian Studios or CD Project Red), but don't require it. You get a pop-up, click it away, and everyone is happy. Expecting people to think this could be different is a bit wild (especially since it apparently wasn't clear to about half of the players...).
the wayback machine has 2 dates that work from what i could find, one in december where the warning was present and one in may where the warning wasn't present, everything between that is riddled with age verification pages so i couldn't tell exactly when they added it but it was pre release. still fuck sony tho
The Warning was there on my purchase a couple of weeks ago.
A friend told me, I dont need a psn account. So I tried anyways. And I could skip it without any issues.
Now they retroactivly want to force it on me.
Im not a fan of a scummy big tech company spying on me.
They record the voice chat, they also have a patent to read players emotions (maybe not in use, but it will), they will train their ai with the data and they will use the plaer-profiling data for manipulative selling techniques.
Why do I know that?
Because they told me, they doing it for "safety and security" reasons.
Which is always a lie.
Sony doesnt love "safety and security" with all their data breaches. Im not trusting them.
For YEARS launching Civ 6 (also through steam) opens the company’s 2K Games launcher, prompting you to make an account before playing the game.
But yeah you can just say “decline” and play the game normally, losing nothing 😂
Helldivers required a PSN account at the beginning but they undid that to ease traffic on the servers when they were turbo fucked
@@jesz97 that's kinda an example on why PSN sucks as well, how does it break down when people are making accounts
It is because of money: By forcing everyone to use playstation network, they can say that millions of users use playstation network, even though they, kinda, dont.
I moved to a new country almost 8 years ago and still have never been able to change my country of residence on my Playstation account. Storefront in that other country and I couldn't make any purchases since I no longer had a valid credit card from that country. Needed to make a new account until I eventually move again where I'll make yet another account.
Ridiculous.
If you're looking for a substitute I suggest Deep Rock Galactic. Very similar gameplay loop, similar tone, and one of the best communities in any game ever. ROCK AND STONE!
Also a much better and way more fun game
@@47dynasty28 Yeah. To bad helldivers will never get the chance to be as fun. Was really hopeful. I dont know how big of an effect all this will *actually* have on the playerbase, but TBH, AH never intended to have this many people in the first place. Theyd probably be less pressured with the balances if they had their original projection like, 50K players? Might even be perfectly fine.
well to be fair. Helldivers 2 was deep rock galactic2.0. Deep rock galactic is so much better, cheaper, more content, more fun in general. Im surprised people said amazing things about helldivers 2 and dont even realize it is a copy of deep rock galactic but with better graphics and less content
I also imagine someone at sony wants to go into a big chair meeting and say "I was able to get us XX million new users"
"This publisher killed this game" more like. Arrowhead had little to do with this, except the fact that they didn't make it clear enough that a PSN account would be required at some point. Either way, this has been resolved by Sony reversing course.
sony felt our wrath and undid it
I almost bought Helldivers 2 last night now that school is wrapping up, but I delayed just a few more days. I'm so glad I did, though I'm also sad because I had been so hyped to finally play it.
Same! Was so close to buying it a few days ago but decided I was gonna spend the money elsewhere for now. Thankful I did, but I'm just upset now.
I feel like I've seen a trend these past couple years of amazing games just having huge moments of "if it's not broken, don't fix it" where they ruin everything and leave a sour taste
BLAME SONY NOT THE DEVELIOPERS!!!
I think it happens every other month now. Helldivers, Tarkov, Cities Skylines, Pathfinder, the whole Ubisoft, and Blizzard. I mean, the same was happening in the industry since gaming started to exist, but players are more actively fighting developers and publishers now.
@@glimbus64 Or blame both, because blaming both is the correct thing here.
@brakthalas the devs literally don't have a say in the matter.
@@floomfi They knew this was coming and let their players drown. Stop allowing devs to get away scot free just because they have a shit publisher.
You are allowed to blame both, because both of them have failed the consumer.
I literally received money recently because of Sony leaking my information
@Funkycatshowdo you realise what you are asking?
@Funkycatshow what wasnt leaked?
Almost as many negative reviews as WarThunder had during the review bombing both bombs were completely warranted
most company's want u to sign up because then they can email you direct advertisement. its the same as why warranties on products require registration, they want that email
Finally an objective take on this, I've seen so many people miss the entire point and arguments about why this is bad. From the questionable PSN Account security to so many countries left out unless they break TOS and lie about their residence. It's a mess and I hope they reach a conclusion of either refunding or allowing people in said countries to play without a Sony account, but if it really is how it seems: a big corpo-enforced decision, I have pretty low expectations about this...
PSN security is a screen door that is ajar, but they say it's because they want to make the game more secure, lmao.
considering a lawyer with experience in international contract law basically said this is fraud, i have high hopes for a successful class action.
Everyone is just so tired of Sony trying to treat people like numbers and idiots. Standing with my fellow helldivers and will drop the game and refund if they dont change their mind.
I don't think you can refund a game after owning it for a period of time and have a lot of hours in it. Just based on past refunds from Steam.
@@thetrustysidekick3013 Could you possibly file it with your bank?
@@thetrustysidekick3013 Steam is pretty generous and will allows you a refund if there is a massive refund wave going on
I know a lot of people were able to refund no mans sky when it first released
Standing with you here. While I don't think I can get a refund, I'm just going to quit the game unless this changes.
@@posionsoup yeah alongside with your steam ban.
you know, now is a good time to change that title cause even before sony backtracked, this was misleading when arrowhead didnt make the decision
The answer for why they are requiring this is fairly obvious to me, INFLATING NUMBERS! They just want all of this millions of players to appear as PSM members I’m assuming helps with stock and other monetary incentives
lol the gaming community aint taking any shit these days

That answer by the community manager was probably a gamble; arrowhead did not come up with this, Sony did. They're probably trying to show Sony what a stupid decision this was.
Edit:*making a gamble
i love how ludwig always grips his mic. very professional
This is barely an issue people just love to complain about anything. Only people that should be mad are the ones who can't sign up because they're in a country not listed. Almost every company online that you sign up for is taking your data, and a bunch of them do get breached occasionally. If you're that worried then why even be on the internet?
And even for them, PlayStations have been sold in those countries for ages. They can just make an account in a different region, and despite people NOW suddenly being sticklers for the ToS, nothing will happen to them.
Its just internet outrage wanting to find something to complain about and feel righteous over LITERALLY NOTHING.
You say that but only a fraction of these countries can actually create psn accounts, get their account nuked for daring to use a VPN to create one, and has *no other options*.
But, sure. Because you live in a country that doesn't have this problem, you can just pretend it doesn't exist, why don't you.
The Steam Reviews hit mixed for recent and probably mixed all reviews soon. They better go back on this Change. F Sony Censorship and Forced Accounts to cover Playstation account numbers on the decline....
agreed, to hell with Sony, these billion dollar bourgeois must stop this
The steam reviews hit "Mostly Negative" for recent now too! And as you said mixed for all reviews. Crazy fast
censorship 💀
Imagine if they kept it optional, but gave you an ingame cosmetic reward for linking a playstation account.
People wouldn't have been mad, and most people would prob. do it
Most - these with no previous experiences with Sony's cybersec :D
a big problem with this is "most" can't. once this goes through, helldivers 2 goes from being playable in all countries that have steam: 226, down to only countries that support PSN: 69. bye bye player base.
@@banaman7746 Pardon me for being ignorant, but there are 226 countries? O_O
Hey Mogul, I think an interesting story for you to cover would be what's happening with Blogilates. She's a fitness influencer who's clothing advertisements were altered by AI to change her and her models' facial features. It's really creepy.
i really think the biggest thing for Sony is that it gives them a really easy boost to their "active accounts" by trying to include PC user into it, without even bothering to cater or produce much for PC users. useful for marketing to investors or to plaster on things. "35 million active PSN accounts" or some similar to make it sound appealing.
Welp, guess Sony is the next thing getting clowned on/being controversial
its sony, not HD2
They are enforcing the "account in your country." dude got banned from making an account with a VPN
The ironic part is that it's not really just the company, it was one part of the team who contacted Sony with the idea and Sony then got them to do said idea. Which now they backtracked but that didn't stop them.
Their idea is that they wanted to ban players more effectively.
Sony has reversed their Decision. Long Live Super Earth!
I feel for Arrowhead. It doesn't look like their decision but their publisher trying to gather PII from their playerbase.
Loved the original Helldivers, Love the sequel. It's unfortunate I won't be playing it anymore.
its what happens when you sign with the devil, hopefully theres a clause in their contract that allows them to sue for damages caused by the publisher.
@@LutgardisLul Fully agree, but I don't blame them for trusting Sony. They've worked together since 2011. Sucks that Sony is now trading that trust for a larger PSN account number.
I take that back, I assumed Arrowhead published through Sony with their first two titles. They did not.
It wasn't until HD1 released in 2015 that they went through Sony as a Publisher.
Seems like 23-24 has just been a time of companies making stupid decisions and people yelling at them about it (Wizards of the Cost, Unity, Sony, Etc.)
"This Company" = Sony
Not the developers/creators of Helldivers/Helldivers 2
The craziest and best part is that the Devs at AH are siding with the players, saying this is a dumb change that isnt warranted. as such, they are starting to encourage people to leave negative reviews on the game so that AH can use it as leverage against Sony to push back against the change.
It's more Sony than the Dev company, y'know.
yes Lud said that in the video
had they enforced there rule of PS account at the start fewer will have been impacted by this new enforcement (has only the ones that where willing to give there data to sony will have been playing it from the start not after spending lots of there time to it)
It's only Sony. The game devs did not want this. I feel incredibly sorry for them.

I knew as soon as I saw your last video that you'd come out and own the mistake. You're genuinely someone who is always trying to do their best and even when you occasionally miss on something you reflect on it and take it on board. It's something I don't think is overly common in online spaces and it's awesome to see a big streamer do it.

I think it’s part data part getting people who don’t have a psn account to sign up for it
