This is how DKOldies Should be Refurbishing Their Consoles

  • DKOldies is an online retailer specializing in buying, selling, and trading video games, consoles, and accessories. Although they've been around for a while, they gained quite a bit of popularity within the past 2-3 years due to their TikTok presence. Although they've always been criticized for being more expensive than the competition, in recent times several CZcamsrs have purchased consoles from DKOldies and inspected them on camera. These consoles are proudly sold as "refurbished" but the results we've seen repeatedly have been shocking.
    Multiple consoles have had issues on first boot, such as games not reading in a disc drive. Many have come in questionable cosmetic shape. Several have been dirty internally, and sometimes externally! Although the worst offense might be these consoles not having their thermal paste replaced.
    I could have purchased a console from DKOldies, given it a teardown, and laughed about the lack of work done on the console for how much it costs. I decided against that and wanted to do something different, so in this video I take a console I picked up from a thrift shop and show DKOldies what they SHOULD BE doing to classify their consoles as "refurbished" units. Keep in mind I myself am not a professional, and what I'm demonstrating here should be the bare minimum level of work that DKOldies should be performing.

The only way to correct that is for them to do a massive recall and actually do the work they promised for the many thousands of systems they’ve sold.

      However if they're doing something like selling cleaned games that haven't been cleaned, or refurbished consoles that haven't been refurbished? That's where the dishonesty lies.

    I worked at a small mom and pop retro vidya store for a while, due to how long it could take to refurb some systems and the profit margin what the owners decided to do in the end was just have us put out for sale the systems that were in the best functional condition possible + clean them externally and do our best to blow them out with a data vac via the ventilation ports (to sell as used). Not really the most advisable process considering some of the systems but I can understand why the owners went with that considering sales and our size. DKoldies on the other hand for the amount they charge and how well known they'd become should definitely have been putting in more effort into their refurb process. EDIT: watched the rest of your vid spot on man.

      There's a healthy balance between not refurbishing anything at all, doing paste + dust job, and going insane over every little detail. It doesn't need to be perfect, but there's a minimal amount of effort that needs to go into refurbing, coherent with the asking price.

    • @MrMario2011

      Most game shops do that, including the ones I worked at unless it was a console repair. I have no issue with that as long as the console is working well and sold as used, but anything refurbished really needs to be done properly. Cleaned, repasted, and any problems remedied before putting it up for sale.

    Nice work. DKO should have classifications or price groups. Something like full priced Fully refurbished or discounted price operation verified. I’ve bought 3 consoles from them to mod so I opened them past the warranty sticker and none of them were cleaned much less refurbished. I think they use the warranty sticker as a way of knowing most people are not going to open the console in four months.

  • @AlDim000
    @AlDim000 Před rokem +1

    Excellent video! I refurbish consoles for a living and this is the exact right way to do it (plus whatever repairs may be necessary, of course) though I'd add that having a powerful electric air blower (I use an Airrow Pro, it's an absolute beast) turns drying parts and dust removal into a literal breeze, takes me around 5-10 minutes to dry a console shell, so I don't have to wait for it to dry. Also, after cleaning the DVD drive you should add white lithium grease to moving parts, especially where the tray slides, the gears, as well as on the laser rail(s) and rotating shaft.
    Btw it's worth mentioning that some consoles like the OG Xbox DO NOT need to be repasted. Those consoles come with a special thermal cement instead of paste. It is dry when cold but becomes soft when heated up and has an extremely long life. That should be left well alone as replacing it with paste adds an extra maintenance requirement every few years going forward vs just letting the system be happy with its cooling for the rest of its life.
    Regarding DKOldies, I highly doubt that they would want to refurbish systems properly. They are a get rich quick scheme with a focus on flipping large quantities of overpriced low quality product through their heavy social media presence, not an actual refurbisher. To maximize volume and profit they just skip the entire process that would justify their exorbitant prices and let false advertising do the rest.

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  Před rokem

      I'll disagree on the OG Xbox front, I always repaste them and would always recommend doing so if the old stuff hasn't been replaced.

    • @AlDim000
      @AlDim000 Před rokem

      @@MrMario2011 I did that on a bunch of OG Xbox units initially and quickly discovered that the paste was not a paste at all and that it would get nice and soft when heated even 20 years later. I did some research and found that I am far from alone in this observation and that nobody has actually been able to show a tangible reduction in temps by changing an OG Xbox to regular thermal paste. Doing this only creates a risk of breaking the super flimsy plastic clamps or damaging the GPU. Also, if the next user doesn't change the paste on occasion, it'll end up with worse cooling in a several years.
      Overheating on the OG Xbox just isn't a thing (unless it has a fan die). They have issues with bad caps and trace rot due to contamination that can cause crashing, so some people just assume that's due to heat, but I have never seen or heard of one that had an overheating problem.

    Nearly skipped this one because of the obvious bandwagon going on with the subject- I literally sighed when clicking it and seeing as how you instantly addressed my sigh I continued on. Nicely put. I myself have a very small store which I sell consoles out of. However, I have always refrained from attaching "refurbished" to the description despite the sometimes hours of work I do to them. I'll mention the capacitors have all been replaced or it has a brand new laser. Aside from all of that, I'll replace the thermal paste regardless and do the disc tray checks. My biggest fear is that someone wants to send back a console because it isn't reading discs.
    I'll also take the tray out of the drive, wipe down the worm motors, etc. and add new grease. If the motherboard is filthy, I'll desolder the internal speaker and throw it in the ultrasonic. I also tare down every controller and check the analog sticks for drift. Replace the thumbsticks regardless of their condition and clean the pads on the board. Controllers always get a good soak and well dried. AFTER all of that, I'll take photos of each console showing their imperfections up close and mentioning them, wrap it in plastic wrap, then bubble wrap and fit it neatly into a box for shipping. Only then will I list it as USED and price according to what it's typically worth. I may be underselling myself but I'm covering all my bases to ensure my customers are satisfied and neither I nor them will face the burden of returns.

      The supplies are probably a drop in the bucket for a company their size (since they can probably get things like IPA, thermal paste and microfiber clothes in bulk).
      But it would be the manpower needed to do it efficiently that is the reason they don’t do it. Although even for them, they can probably crank out a system in 30 minutes, since I wouldn’t expect shells to be fully washed. The vast majority of stains can be cleaned with IPA and some scrubbing, don’t even need a magic eraser.

    Now that's what should be called refurbished.
    On a similar note, I still need to get around to opening up my 80GB PlayStation 3 (no PS2 backwards-compatibility) as the clock battery went bad years ago, and it runs quite hot. The thermal paste (which is 14 years old) really needs to be replaced on that thing. It's a bit daunting for me as the only console I've ever opened up was my original Xbox to remove the clock capacitor. Speaking of that, I also need to learn how to solder as my original Xbox is the 1.0 version with the Foxlink PSU and it's making the crackling noise, indicating the solder has cracked on the power plug so it's now a fire hazard. This is why there was that power cord recall, there was no strain relief on that PSU, thankfully other revisions fixed that.
    Almost forgot, I did open a PSP 3000 I imported from Japan a few years ago because it had stick drift. It was such a pain to put that thing back together after I put the replacement analog stick in.

    I would imagine dkoldies isn't a very profitable business. I think the average person who wants to play retro games is going to emulate them. Theres not actually a lot of people buying up retro hardware. And if you look at they're repair benches they are equivalent to hobbiest not a business. If your going to make a company that refurbishes consoles than buy a degreasing tank for 100$ so you can soak multiple shells at a time, buy alcohol in bulk, buy spare parts in bulk, hire solder workers for caps..... the process of refurbishing doesn't have to be one at a time. You can have workers for disassembly than soak the shells move the boards to the solder workers and have workers for assembly. I also feel like most people who are qualified for refurbishing are over qualified and wouldn't make ideal pay refurbishing consoles.

And I have even did couple of hours sessions on both of them lately and not a problem. Do I need to worry ? Do I need to change the paste ?
