It's especially sketchy when you know that they encourage people to repair their consoles themselves before sending them back, it's an actual scam. There was another CZcamsr who emailed them and they requested he try and fix the problem himself before returning it. But that would involve removing the stickers, making the warranty null and void. They're actual criminals.
Well they can't uphold that statement in the US because opening up your device does not void your warrenty. They're just saying that to make people think they can't open them when they are well within their own rights to inspect the inside themselves.

Top-dollar price demands top-dollar service, especially when there is language on their website specifically stating the machines are fully "tested" and "cleaned." Dead-on-arrival and/or filthy machines, with non-OEM parts, are not worth top-dollar prices.

I actually donât think it is legal for them to void a warranty because you opened the console. Should be part of the consumer protection act or something similar to that name. So long as the console isn't damaged(like the machinations, not cosmetically) the console is still under warranty, in fact the FTC told off the major 3 companies that its illegal to void a console thats only been opened.

Just a note, opening a console does not void the warranty by US law. There have been many court cases over this matter and the company has lost every single time. The issue is no one is going to take someone to court for something as small as a ps3. The people who have are generally through class actions but, they tend to go after the manufacturers who have more money as opposed to relatively small 3rd party resellers. It's not worth the court fees.
They had a chance to redeem themselves, just to screw it up once again.

Just recently got hired as a SGA for Gamestop (my store is typically better at customer service in our region, so I will sound somewhat biased atm) and from what I can tell, the company really isn't doomed, but digital purchases on console eshops are definitely lowering the sale counts. Gamestop is most likely going to become the go to for budget-shopping parents and people who simply prefer physical games. Other than that, yeah, the glory years are quite behind the company.

Because the average consumer who would actually buy a console from dk oldies likely wouldnât take the console apart. Especially those who would have the money need to sue dk oldies lol theyâll just buy another one
This exact situation happened to me. I ordered a ârefurbishedâ Nintendo GameCube from DKOldies last December. It looked clean for the most part, but it wouldnât read discs. I contacted them and they shipped me a replacement one. The replacement one was dirty as all hell and, guess what, it wouldnât read discs either. I will not be ordering from them again.
For future reference, the disc read issue can be fixed very easily with few tools.
You'll need:
Game Bit screwdriver
Phillips head screwdriver
Multimeter
Take out the 4 game bit screws on the bottom in the corners, then turn the system back over. Put your hands on the sides, pull the shell off, and put it aside. On the back plate where the power and output cables are, there are two clips, one on each side. Gently push the clips back and the plate will come off. Now do the same for the front where the controllers connect, but remove the ribbon connector from between the memory card ports. (BE AWARE: The ribbon cable is soldered to the front plate board, don't try to pull the top side off.)
Now, there are 12 screws around the disk drive, two of them hold the fan, and two are under the fan. The fan can stay connected but you can pull the connector if you want. Remove these screws. There are two brackets on top of the memory card slots held in with two screws each. Remove both and set aside.
Now, pick up the disc drive and flip it. There is a metal plate held in by 7(?) screws, remove this plate and set aside.
This is the disc drive board. Close to one side, you will see a component that looks like a black square with a metal circle in it, and on that circle is a Phillips head pattern. This is the laser potentiometer. It has three legs that connect to the board, and you should orient the board so that the single leg is on the left. Now set your multimeter to Resistance (Ohms, Ω) and put one lead on the left leg, and the other on the bottom right. Most likely this will not be correct. Take the Phillips head screwdriver and turn the potentiometer very slightly about â of a turn, then read it out again, it should be between 200-400 Ohms, but this might vary depending on your console. Once you have it in that range (I suggest somewhere in the middle), you can reassemble the console up to before you put the shell on, put a game in, and hold the double switch on the back right side of the console. Power it on and see if the disc will read. If not, keep adjusting the potentiometer.
I hope this helps, whether you specifically or anyone else.
While it's open you can also replace your CMOS battery on the controller port board but this requires a soldering iron and a new battery.

I find it sad how they wonât take any accountability for their shady business practices. As well as telling you opening the console voids the warranty which is now illegal to do according to US law.
That law was made specifically to target new merchandise. (You buy a PS5 brand new at best buy, open it and Sony can't deny a warranty) does it cover "refurbished" products as well?

I was curious how they were going to handle the warranty. Obviously they knew they were in the wrong and needed to replace it. Unfortunately, the replacement was terrible even after instructing somebody in their company to clean it. Are you going to return both?

PS: Based on my experience, they basically use a more powerful blower, which removed some dust bunnies, but not actual dust powder, hence the situation inside your console.
Furthermore, as I have previous working experience on an IT company, improper air ventilation and cooling for the PSU/CPU is a potential *fire hazard*
Same thing goes for its 15+ years old bulged capacitors and resistors.
I'm pretty sure there's more than a handful of excellent lawyers out there, readily to take those *criminals* into court. You fellows should be in touch in order to press that as a group, best of luck!
I just made a comment about that....someone should do a class action lawsuit and get a bunch of people together and sue them. This is going too far and has been going on for quite awhile now.

I can easily understand why buyers might expect their top-dollar purchases be both tested and cleaned. I know I would expect that, especially since it was specifically mentioned on the website on the product page, and therefore legally-binding under consumer protection laws.

Its truly night and day when your console isnt really refurbished. I recently got a cechA01 ps3 and played it for a few days before i opened it up to change thermal pads, clean, and repaste- and the sheer noise difference is insane. Definitely a must on these older systems

There must be retro sellers out there actually refurbishing theyâre consoles. Itâs just a shame that this canât be common practice considering how much someone might be paying for the service. Just did tear downs on my ps4 pro and my buddies down to the thermal paste and fans and in a professionals hands itâs gotta be way faster than mine which didnât take very long to begin with. To think someone might by refurbished only to have theyâre console fail in the near future is sad all in all.

They didn't do any better. They just got a PS3 that had less dust and sent it to him. They did the same amount of work but instead of recieving the worst of the dusty consoles he got one with less dust. If they actually did their job they'd actually fully open them.

If dkoldies are filming orders that are mainly to mislead their customers and make it seem like their doing something they aren't... isn't the company able to be sued or something in a legal matter if they are doing something to everyone that buys from them that isn't what they claim they do or something?
This reminds me of gym memberships, there are so many bad reviews for gyms gouging money from people who try to cancel their membership. Everyone knows about it but the authorities turn a blind eye, so they keep doing it for as long as they can get away with it. Just a thought; I cleaned an extremely dirty ps3 one time, then played games for about 5 hours. When my girlfriend got home, I wanted to show her how clean the console was and opened it back up to find dust patterns that looked exactly like the one in this video, even the same light grayish color.
This is so sad, they are putting a bad name out there for the companies that are actually taking their time to correctly refurbish consoles (clean, repair, repaste, repad) and they fail to do the easiest part of a "refurbish"...... CLEAN and REPASTE.... it will catch up with them soon

I refurbished my own PS3 consoleâs and backwards compatible and I bought them 60-90$ I feel sorry for the people that buy 300-400$ for it on a fake " refurbished "console đ

I could be entirely wrong here, but aren't warranty void stickers here in the U.S ruled out? Like, they don't apply anymore? I remember a few years back with pc parts like graphics cards and stuff that warranty void stickers aren't legal anymore. Like you can open up your device because of right to repair and the company still has to offer warranty..

I'm happy to see you open the box on screen. Way too many other people showing us unrefurbished DK consoles but the boxes were already opened. Some people possibly just jumping on the band wagon to get views
The thing that bothers me about DKOldies is that they make entrepreneurship look bad. The most important thing is to do right by your customers in any business and there are many hard working people that do. Because bad actors like them get attention (as they should), it can create skepticism about other small businesses which is unfortunate.
It's going to take a good lawsuit to change this. Seems like they know what they're doing, just daring people to call them on it. The only effective way to do that is attack their wallet.

See the issue is that actual refurbishment (thermal paste replacement) is the console lasts longer and the same customers wonât need to go back to buy more.
Just like apple and their batteries.

My local game store sells old consoles like this properly refurbished and I did the same thing you did. Opened it and checked, BUT they actually tell you that it was refurbished or if they just got it and are re-selling and the price does change before and after itâs refurbished, they let you know and the price changes on the console you buy. If anyone is curious the store is called âLevel 7â, Iâve only seen them here in Colorado( if youâre in Las Vegas, NV. I recommend âWII play gamesâ).
Iâve taken really good care of mine and you canât help it getting scratched up. Setting anything on it scratches it (like when youâre moving) and by the time you realize it itâs too late. I would consider a good condition one to have light scratches but no heavy scratches. One without scratches would be a rare find.

Almost positive they need some sort of paperwork indicating they can mark void warranties on consumer products, and im not too sure 2nd hand "refurbishments" qualify for voidable warranty status.
According to the FTC, they can't void any warranty by you opening up the console. "FTC staff recently took a closer look at companiesâ warranties and promotional materials and saw language that raised concerns that some businesses were telling consumers that their warranty would be void if they used unauthorized parts or service. The companies used different language, but here are examples of questionable provisions.
The use of [the companyâs parts] is required to keep your . . . manufacturerâs warranties and any extended warranties intact.
This warranty shall not apply if this product . . . is used with products not sold or licensed by [company name].
This warranty does not apply if this product . . . had had the warranty seal on the [product] altered, defaced, or removed.
FTC staff suggested that the companies review the Mag-Moss Warranty Act and, if necessary, revise their practices accordingly. The letters also put the companies on notice that weâll be taking another look at their written warranties and promotional materials after 30 days."

Yeah I don't think dkoldies understands how running a business works. You can't say you are refurbishing something, then say oh it's only warranted if you don't check that we did/didn't do that. If someone wants to sue or class action, they would lose in a heartbeat.
I think even in a dust storm those consoles would be cleaner than the ones from DKoldies

It's crazy seeing consoles like this. hell, I even take the time to tear down and refurb my own consoles. 8 years ago DK Oldies used to be somewhat decent.
The thing that gets me is the mixed bag of crap you get from not just them, but places like GAME/Game stop/CEX. People rather pay inflated prices for a lucky dip of crap than risk an ebay purchase that lists everything that is wrong/shows all the cosmetic flaws.
I mean ppl get scammed a lot more on eBay than any other store. The reality is this is the risk you take when buying second hand products from third parties a lot of ppl were selling âBrand Newâ PS5 and Series X for $1000+ and they were clearly open box items

This almost confirms they opened this second unit to be sure it was "cleaner" but still didn't bother refurbishing. Just wow.
I actually just picked up a PS3 console from a Goodwill that I am going to test and clean up for resale. I already have thermal paste and meters set to do a full refurbishment. I already feel like I am going to do 100x more work on it than DKOldies ever would.

The Warranty sticker they put is on the console is illegal in the states. So them telling you that opening it up would void it is also illegal. Look it up yourself and you will see. You can also report the company for doing it.
And the thing they do where they make a console or item extremely expensive and then have a permanent 100 dollar sale on them to make it look like a good deal apparently thatâs also illegal

The only thing I've ever ordered from DK is the power brick and tv connection for a N64. I would never pay good money for a super old console when I can order parts to repair the ones I find in the dump. Plus working on consoles is easy and fun. The most frustrating part of working on consoles is making sure you have the right tools and parts but there are toolkits you can order that have everything you need in em. Save a few bucks and rebuild your own consoles and few for your friends.
The Magnusson-Moss Act (in America) makes it illegal to void a warranty because the end user opened or even modified a device, unless the manufacturer can prove that the problem the end user wants fixed under warranty was actually caused by the opening or modification. See 15 U.S.C. §§ 2301-2312.
Email them and threaten to sue them if they donât send you a good console. Thatâd probably work
While on the subject of backwards compatible models I have a question to anyone who can answer. Iâve repaired a YLOD CECHA01 PS3 from doing a delid on CPU and GPU and replaced all the thermal paste on both sides of the chip. It powers on and works now which is great but it gets really hot after an hour. Iâve compared it to a later model fat PS3 that isnât backwards compatible and after an hour itâs warm but not hot like the A01 model. Is this normal or could the power supply be bad?
Some later model fat PS3s use a 65nm RSX that would go on to be used in the early Slim models, which draw less power & produce less heat compared to the 90nm RSX that the backwards-compatible fat models use. If the fans donât sound like a jet engine after the console begins to warm up, I wouldnât worry about it.

I was considering to buy an original Xbox that I used to play with my dad, but it was overpriced. After seeing your videos of how they list their consoles as being ârefurbished.â I was super disappointed of how they would treat old classics this way.
