    To be honest, the sound is good. Don't expect it to sound like an acoustic, compare it to an electric guitar vs an acoustic. They sound very different. It has it's own voice and I kinda like it, but I guess it's really up to you because if you buy it you gotta listen to it.

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  Před 5 lety +7

      I like this perspective. Does it does amazing or does it do a job? That is for the player to decide. My student (who just recorded the Invention Nº4 on his acoustic) thought this cello sounded good but was more happy out it being silent. Eventually, his ear evolved and he became more discerning to the cello's unique resonate qualities. He did not regret this buy and hence, based on the real-life positive impact this cello made on an actual student, I do recommend it. Thank you, Tankerspam, for your honesty.

    You definitely addressed all of the cons. The pros are being able to practice without bothering people. I bought an electric cecilio violin in Feb of this year and finally learning to play. I practice every day now for hours.

    I got the Black one a few years ago and I got the strings replaced and I bought a better bow, so it's decent. I threw the rosin away, because it fell and broke and I knew it was bad quality to begin with, but the holder is nice. I also got rid of the headphones it came with, I had a better pair. I sometimes struggle with the fact that it doesn't have a body to grip with my knees, but it does the job and it works.

  • @creampuffme

    I know I'm way late to the game but I have this exact cello, we got it set up by a local luthier, and it sounds really good. The tone is true, and I have really enjoyed having it. I think the biggest problem with these kinds of purchases is that it is a gamble. The quality assurance is so low that sometimes they are great products and other times they are horrible.

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  Před 5 lety +1

      Totally true, Big Eif (cool handle). QA is crucial with these products, and are really hit and miss. Don't get me wrong, the cello plays fine, but the electronics lost much of their initial functionality over time. This video was it's last gasp of air before being put down humanely.

    • @creampuffme
      @creampuffme Před 5 lety

      @@CelloCoach I can absolutely see that happening. I just completely lucked out with the one I recieved. It was so well done that a professional set up (except the new strings) was a minimal expense the the luthier was impressed at the quality/price ratio.

As for Yahama, *HOLD* I have the 210 model and will be reviewing it in full this year, maybe even playing it in some covers. In short, yes the Yahama SVC110 is a good silent cello and galaxies further in quality from the red cello here.

    I am very happy with it as a quiet practice instrument, BUT:
    1) the end pin is too short so I rest it on a raised step!!
    2) the wobbly chest rest (awful design here!) had to be tightly strapped to stop it from moving.
    3) the belly is too slippery for ones knees to grip. These I padded with thick socks😝 and non-slip fabric - what the heck, I never take it out in public.
    ...Three considerable flaws considering the price but it is quieter and that's why I bought it.

      ebony is sturdier and easier to be shaped by luthiers, if a guitar fretboard have little bumps it usually go unnoticed cause the frets are more important but on fretless instrument it hugely impact playability.

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  Před 6 lety +4

      You hit the nail on the head, Daniel! I'll apprehend that the cost of a decent preamp and good amp would eclipses the entire cost of this electric cello package. I did try to make it sound better with my audio gear, yet doing so would be disingenuous, for the outlays on my audio gear world me at least two of these cello packages. Hence, I thought to be as "real" as possible, and review this cello as "out-of-the-box", sans preamp, etc. As for the repairs my student did, he only soldered loose connections that were already there. In the end, he sold this cello for an acoustic.

    @c.r.blankenship9040 Před 4 lety +4

    I have this cello, and I'd just like to mention that the solution to getting a good sound out of it is to plug it into a bass amp. The direct in does NOT sound good for performance, but the bass amp (with the high and mids cut severely) will produce a nice, warm cello sound. I have not have any problems with the battery. The bow took a long time to rosin up, but I haven't had any problems with it.
    However, I did have some trouble with the chest rest, as the hinge fell off. As I didn't see it when it was fully assembled, I can't figure out how it went together and fix it. Anyone have an idea how it went together?

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  Před 4 lety +1

      Cannot attest to the chest rest detaching, but I can state that using an IR would have improved the sound. What I wanted to show is the reality for those whom purchase this cello, most will not have an available bass amp to use and instead have a bluetooth speaker lying around like my Bose SLIII (TBH, the Bose speaker is more expensive than the entire cello package) Surely, your cello will sound great on my 2500€ amp/cab and even better with an IR via an effect box (another 400€), yet we would be presumptive to think the average debutant has any gear at their disposal when then opt for a sub-300€ Chinese factory-made cello.

      Look at the price of an instrument. If made in Germany, it would probably be many 1000s of euros. Looking at the HD prices, I would hedge they are Chinese-made. EX: My Martin D15M is American made and costs 1600€. The D10E (same wood) is 1000US$ and is made in Mexico. Same for Fender, Taylor, and of course, all cellos.

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  Před 5 lety

      It is possible the House of Guarneri produced your cello. Andrea is the father of Giuseppe, the ultra famous and thus valued son of Andrea. FUN FACT: Giuseppe was a total alcoholic and thug of a man. He spent his share of nights in jail for disorderly conduct. his work ethic was minuscule compared to his literal neighbors House Amati and Stradivari. Things only Cremona luthiers know ;-)

I did not replace the electronics, just move the bridge around the pickup and try to find the right spot were sound deep and full, move it back to de right and the left side up or down to find the good sound. Then cut off all the high frequency from the back EQ and push up the bass. Mine sound actually pretty good, no need to buy an expansive one. the set up also must be well done but try to find the right sound from the bridge. Let me know if it works. That is why these cellos can bring to life the dreams of aspiring cellist who need to play quietly. I bought the same electric electric cello new for $130 dollar (US) and I can honestly say you went out of your way to get the weakest tone you could from it.
    No, I would not play Symphony Hall with it, but when you want to get some practice in at 11:30 at night without the police 'applauding ' at your door, it is a GREAT investment. Yeah, I'd like a Silent Cello more, but I can buy twenty of these for what Yamaha thinks that plank is worth.

      Keepin' it real : this cello literally "does a job", as in the student that bought it lived in a small, studio on the 7th floor of a thinly-walled, newly built French building. He was happy to have learned for a full year on this very red, very electric cello. But after that fateful day he played my cello, lamenting "why is the song to easy", he took the next opportunity to rent a cello and later, purchase that cello. So, yes, in the end he learned about acoustic string pick-ups, and is now thankful for his trade cello.

      Yup, the strings and rosin leave much to be desired. What did you do in the end? Keep or Sell?

    I wonder if they lowered the quality of these cheap electric instruments. I bought one off ebay in the $200-300 price range 4 years ago and it sounds much better than this. I have a couple of videos of it on my channel but I'm really impressed by its sound quality compared to the one in this video. Granted the one I have is the brand Yinfente rather than Cecilio.

      You made a good point, Alex. The quality of construction of the body is consistent, but the electronics is more "hit-and-miss". Honestly, without a quality pre-amp, solid internal wiring and good amp - costs that will eclipse the entire cello package - this electric cello leaves much to be desired. I owned a NS Design CR6 for years, and can highly recommend that NS cellos, even the NXT line.

    I woudn't recommend buying electric cello for sub 1k. Obviously you have to have a bit of inner engineer to be playing this instrument, and line-in demo doesn't do it justice, even if the pickup is bad - no one ever uses that dry sound anyway) Electric bowed strings are just another sonic world, just like an electric guitar vs classical.

      He told me the pickup just needed to be re-soldered. And said all-in-all, that it wasn't that bad. I'm a guitar player, and don't mind making upgrades.

    In 2003 I paid $1200 for my traditional cello. The strings I liked cost $75 for a set. So how would anyone think a sub $500 plastic version would be worth the price?

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  Před 5 lety +2

      For some people, an initial outlay of 500 US$ on a fledgling passion is a tall ask. Most top out at 1200-2000US$.

      Jonathan Humphries very good point. However it makes me sad thinking of how many people will buy cellos off Amazon like it’s a tv. An instrument at $50 is over priced if it sounds so awful if it convinces students they have no talent.
