I like your casual attitude about instrument making at first. Then you got down to serious building and the cello was a success. First time build what could be better? Looks like a cigar box guitar on steroids with a bent neck, but it plays. Yes, you can be proud of this adventure. Thanks for sharing.

I appreciate this kind of work. Violins came from a tradition that started with instruments made like this; restricting the making of instruments to specific forma restricts innovation and expression. Instrument making is an art no matter what instrument you're making, but you don't have to paint like rembrandt to be allowed to paint

    • @RobManser77

That’s an interesting point. Every cello I’ve ever seen copies the shape of an older model. I’m only aware of a handful of luthiers who have dared to make anything new. Maybe it’s the whole music world that’s the problem? You can’t compete at any sport unless you do that sport as written, and I’d guess you wouldn’t be let into an orchestra with a cello made from a suitcase.

absolutely phenomenal job! for making a cello out of a piece of luggage, a 2x4, ukulele tuners, and some random cello bits and pieces, it sounds better than most cheap quality cellos. Your first attempt playing was also quite good, relatively even sound, firm bow hold, and despite a little bit of sliding, a steady bow. bravo!

I did one. I purchased the tailpiece, the endpin, the bridge and the scroll, and I built the box.
I wanted a silent cello to play until midnight in my flat without wakening the neighbors. It worked, the sound had a 43 db attenuation according to my sonometer.
It is transportable enough to be transported inside a small bag. The box is big enough to hold the bow.
      I used old Jargar strings.
I am not a good cellist but I enjoyed building this silent cello.

I love how 🎼🎼🎶🎶musicians tend to want to make their own instruments.. either because the instrument they want is too expensive or that they do it for experimentation purposes.. I made myself a didgeridoo.. I used a rubber part of a chair for the mouthpiece (I had to cut it open so that I can place my mouth and blow through it) and a metal rod from a bar that hung clothing.. It's not the best digeridoo.. but playing it makes a good sound.. I just recently chopped out a thick root from my apartment front yard with my dad's hatchet.. I'mma try and make a cello out of it.. I might need to actually purchase some parts first.. Let's see how this turns out! Thanks for the video!! It's inspirational for creativity 💖💖

Bass guitar machine heads are something I’ve wanted on cello since the beginning. I’d love to hear an electro-magnetic pickup, though - could be awesome, and very reminiscent of the whole “no rules” idea.

As someone who has played cello for quite a while, and owns a very expensive cello im pretty impressed! Although it in my opinion sounds different from a cello- it’s still pretty decent. It’s a bit tinny and there’s a weird electric sound (maybe due to the thing you added). If you were to make a second model I would suggest some adjustments, (like making the “fretboard” rounded 😭😭😭😭 and adding f holes )) which honestly would probably make it more like a regular cello but yknow.. there’s a reason they stuck around this long, and i love the experimentation! (btw you might wanna invest in a better bow and some nice rosin, it makes a huge difference as well!!) ❤

FYI, the smaller bass tuners like found on an Ibanez bass might work better for you, they're much smaller than the Fender style ones you got. Also, as this is not a traditional cello, you really didn't need the full size bridge, but angling the neck was the best solution.

Thick strings don't necessarily mean high tension.
I'm guessing your scale length is much shorter than a real cello, which makes the tension way lower, proportionally.
This could sound even better with the correct string lenght and neck angle and I would add a scale (fingerboard) to that neck and make it with the corresponding radius to match the bridge's radius.
Great build and video, despite that. Keep at it, cheers from Brazil!

@stauffap yes if you're playing for fun, it's fine, but if you're a student studying towards exams, or someone looking to take up the cello seriously, then the tone on this,In being nothing like the tone on an acoustic cello would screw up a students ability to learn good intonation, as is the case with any electric vs acoustic instrument. An electric cello sounds nothing like an acoustic cello. As a bit of fun and for mucking about on it's fine. I can see the post for the fun aspect it intended but was concerned that there were several comments from people wanting to play the cello but couldn't afford to buy one who were looking to go down this route. If you can't afford to buy one and are looking to take up this instrument seriously then the answer is to rent a good quality one. In fairness, I can't believe anyone looking to play seriously would even consider making one of these, but you can never tell as the comments section proves.

That's very inspiring! I would like to follow the same concept you invented.
Can you share some details for it? e.g. measurements (how long is the neck, angles of attachment, etc) / how did you attach the bridge? / in general, weren't you afraid that after you split the neck (to have the angle) the strings tension will be too much for it?
