    Sorry guys I made a little mistake (very annoying as despite replaying the entire quest a few days ago in prep, it completely slipped my mind) olgierd made the demons a cat and dog because Iris told him that she'd like a cat and a dog. So I suppose it was to make her happy and in a way practise goetia. The fact he decided to give her two demons that look like a cat and dog, when she asked for a cat and dog really does show how disconnected he was at this point!

    You neglected to mention that when you take the rose, the dog actually tells you how to defeat Gaunter O'Dimm, albeit cryptically. Implying, although demons, they possessed some form of concept of the debt of gratitude which O'Dimm himself questions about humans, elves, and dwarves.

    The black cat and dog are probably my favorite characters in the game. Also it's not impossible that they feel some pity at least for Iris. They've spent so much time with her and then her wraith... witnessing the whole tragedy. It's entirely possible that they've developed a connection to her. A bond of sorts. They even call her mistress. They are however still demons. You can't expect them to just start crying and pour their uhm... whatever they use for a heart out. They already know that Iris is dead and there's no going back. They've seen her reliving those nightmarish moments in the painted world. Even if they ever mourned it, they had plenty of time to come to grips with the fact that she needs to go and that it would be best for everyone involved. They're not strictly selfish. They're just rational.

    I think it's important to point out that in the Witcher universe a demon is used to describe anything forcibly summoned from another plane via Goetia. So they can all be different. Some with physical bodies and others without and they can have different abilities as well. Considering the caretaker was summoned I would classify him as a demon. Since Gaunter O' Dimm couldnt be summoned I would say he is not a demon or he is an incredibly powerful demon

    Yes, I too found this whole scenerio very sad. A woman who loved and wanted to be loved and yet through circumstances not of her doing. She was isolated, alone and sad... If memory serves does it not say somewhere in this maybe when first find in bedroom doesnt either the cat of dog say she died of a broken heart? I could have that wrong but... am pretty sure it was something like that. I believe in the beginning Olgierd really and truly loved Iris. But the corruption that is Master Mirror removed and corrupted anything that remained so could not even if wanted it to remain. In a way it was his love of Iris and the feeling of need to provide everything for her to make her happy, which in the end destroyed both of their happiness. As even later on near the end of the DLC Olgierd you can tell he is not happy, he knows what he done, he knows he cannot reverse it and he knows he cannot undo it. He has to live with it for the rest of his life. Which I think is why he gives Geralt what he does give him (if you helped him against Master Mirror, I do not want to say what it is just in case someone reads this and still to play that part, those who have played that part will know what I mean). He knows his old life is over however it was. He does in a way give in and resigns himself to whatever fate now awaits him. As to the Cat and Dog, Yes we know they are demons. But demons can come in many forms. Yes they were bound to Iris, but and I too debated this lots myself was it for self that they helped steer Geralt in the right direction or.... did they actually feel pity for Iris's suffering... They afterall saw her love, they saw her fade away and die, they saw her turn into a wraith. Maybe initially it was only because they were summoned but in time did that change... As said earlier and thinking about it while typing this am pretty sure it was the dog who says.... "died of a broken heart"... If did not care...would not have said that.... that is my thoughts anyways :)

    @ZerLeaf Před 4 lety +26

    I find that HoS plot has some of the sharpest agency-driven writing I have ever experienced. Super Bunnyhop has a great video about that, so I'll borrow one of his examples:
    In early stage of quest you find yourself in front of a burning house where two or Olgierd's casacs about to execute some rando for a reason yet to be revealed. You can interrupt them and directly confront Olgierd to save the rando, or be a down-to-business Geralt and not intervene with something you have no personal gain of doing.
    In the very end of HoS story you are presented with exactly the same situation, except this time the Olgierd himself is about to be executed.
    Now that what is called "foreshadowing" is non-interactive fiction. In a game, however, this is a weird moment to project your own personal beliefs into the fictional world. Pragmatically speaking, Geral has no (extrinsic) motivation to face both "You're... Immortal" and the "Mystery Man" nor do you. So the choice is entirely up to your in-the-moment feelings or personal beliefs about giving someone a second chance.
    Alright, back to our cat and dog business. The bound demons have indeed no empathy for the Iris and they indeed just want this to be over with. ... But so does the Geralt. All three are bound by contract, and want just want it to be over with. Even though this "to be over with" has to do with Iris fading into non-existence.
    So this final conflict feels powerful because it's not just an animated cut-scene on screen, but rather it is in your -player's- head. Cat and dog can not disobey Olgierd's contract much like Geralt can not disobey player's instructions. By choosing to keep the Iris alive in the painted world, you and Geralt both are confronting the inevitability of one's (Iris') death, hoping for the brighter future in spite of all the odds.
    By choosing to take the rose and for Iris to fade away, however, you are not just being a dick to her, but rather siding with the bound Cat and Dog. They deserve the rest after all.
    So yeah, they are evil and selfish and help Geralt solely for personal gains. They are the antagonist of this particular subplot. But they are there the remind you that bare existence can be a toll on others. They are also there for you to confront this exact notion and decide to forgive -- to hold onto something -- rather than to simply forget and mind your business. Which, if you ask me, is a hella more interesting conflict than the good guys fighting against the bad guys to save the world.

One would expect the weapons of choice for Ursine witchers to be broadswords, battle axes, or even a great sword. Just like it would be more in a Manticore witcher’s style to use something akin to a Pulwar or scimitar.

    Okay, so this was a year ago, and I'm about at 3:32 in the video, but @WitcherGeorge, when you say "i don't understand why the demons are bound to the forms of a cat and a dog" do you not remember the memory you can construct directly to the right of you when you get into the painted world. Iris and Olgierd are in the gazebo, and Iris is painting. She remarks to Olgierd that it would be nice for them to have a cat and a dog. That way during winter they could be all cute by the fire. (I don't remember exactly what Iris says.) Olgierd wasn't exactly paying attention, and he goes inside right after, but obviously he was paying attention, so he did what any normal husband would do when his wife asks for a dog and a cat. He summons to demons and binds them to the forms of a dog and a cat. But hey! At least he made them black so they could match Iris's aesthetic.
    P.s: If I finish the video and you remark on the subject then I do apologize.

    I think presuming the cat and dog don't care at all for Iris simply because they were pushing for their freedom is looking at it their motivations and feelings too simply. The witcher world is all about shades of grey, not black and white, good or bad. The cat and dog wanted freedom absolutely, but wanting something for yourself doesn't stop you from feeling genuinely sorry for someone else's plight. I actually think pitying Iris would make their desire for freedom even stronger, because they were sitting around watching a dead woman suffer at the hands of the man who had bound them and if they were freed they wouldn't have to watch it anymore.

    They are otherworldly beings. They have different notions on right and wrong. But they may empathize with Iris because they may see a mirror of their plight in her's. They can't imagine she is any happier being bound to that place than they are. So it they may indeed intend what they believe is best. Everyone moves on and stops suffering. But I suspect the reason they have any empathy for her is because their situation is so similar. I do not suspect demons naturally empathize with anything. Of course what is the difference between a demon and any other spirit? Maybe far less than we like to think. Hard to say when working from the mortal perspective rather than the immortal one.

      Sure, we beat him fair and square. Sure, it DOES seem like he is gone a long time after the events concluded.
      Sure, Gaunter is defeated in his own game.
      But... We don't know anything. The creep might decide to pay Geralt a visit on his death bed and take him to a place nobody deserves to be. (Not letting the Witcher die in bed).
      Gaunter might ruin everything later on. I don't believe literally anything can stop Gaunter. I myself irl would just play nice all the way through with Gaunter.
      But who knows? Maybe Geralt's strengths and boldness might have discouraged Gaunter? Maybe Gaunter learned something new and rewarding from his experience with Geralt, whicg could also affect both in a positive way.

    @elifriedman8812 Před rokem

    Technically yes, the black cat and dog are "demons" in a general sense but in this case, Olgierd kind of did that to himself and it showed he was paying the consequences for relying on black magic. Also, the genie in Aladdin is basically a "demon" too and so in this particular case, freeing those two from Iris' service is like freeing the genie from being bound to the lamp. They're being sent away and he's getting rid of them. Regarding their willingness to "help" Geralt, that's just a reflection of the general reciprocity/altruism that's that guiding moral principle of the Witcher games, i.e. people helping each other out for mutual practical benefit and somehow deriving meaning and friendship from that in some cases. Everyone in the end has their own selfish motives guiding them and they want/need others' help, so helping others is understood to benefit them in some way. In this case the spirits wanted to be freed and they guided Geralt to that end. he wanted Iris' violet rose to fulfill Olgierd's wish so his service to O'Dimm could be completed. Their selfish interests all coincided somewhat so it worked out. There wasn't much of an overarching moral sense of what they were doing.

Those who know do not say. They speak in riddles if they answer at all. It is both the end and the begining. That is all that can be said. They did not seek the contract they labor under as far as we know. Indeed it seems they have no interest in mortal existence at all. O'Dimm on the other hand...he is definitely one to watch out for. A trickster king, that one. Mischevious, but fair. He only pursues the wicked or those who have already damned themselves. Of course he doesn't hold life sacred, he just isn't interested in souls who are not driven to bad ends. The only way someone who isn't already on his radar to gain his interest is seemingly to offend him. Which is a chancy prospect in all fairy tales so no wonder he reacts poorly to that one guy who interrupts him.

    I think they *empathize* with her situation, as much as they can. Are they absolutely self-serving in wanting to be free from the prison they are force to be in and using Geralt was a tool for this? Very much so. Do they feel sorry for Iris's situation (which mirrors thier own situation) and pity her in a detached kind of way? I honestly think they do. Maybe it's because its a female voicing The Cat, but it's vocal cadence and tone of voice when talking about Iris's death and current Fate Worse Than Death does come off as more sympathetic than The Dog's blunt and gruff demeanor. They might be incapable of loving her (as they readily admit) but that does not mean they do not feel for her in a "Alas, Poor Iris" kind of way.

      Sorry that my reply is one year later, but i completely agree with you. They've been trapped with her for so long, that they understand her situation and are able to pity her. Maybe they don't "like her" in our human standards, (probably because they aren't even capable of that emotion completely) but they do care about her to some extend. In polish version, both The Cat and The Dog sound like they care and feel sad about her. I remember the first time i played this dlc and talked with them for the first time. I was very conflicted, thinking that they care about their freedom the most and Iris is just an addition, that comes with it so they have to make Geralt feel bad for them. At the same time, i didn't feel any malice from them, nor tone that would imply that they are trying to manipulate or trick you. They were just sad and tired of being stuck in that painting. What i also found interesting is (if i remember well) when you bury Iris' bones, ask The Cat and The Dog if they want to say anything about Iris, they say something about that human ''rituals'' like that aren't known to them. I thought that it means that even if they would want to, they literally cannot because this is not in their nature. They can feel emotions, but only to some extend. I feel bad for all of them, even for The Caretaker.
