- What are Dopplers in the Witcher? In this video I try my best to explain the history of the Dopplers. I will go over prominent Dopplers, the Dopplers effect on the witcher games, how dopplers live, how dopplers work in the witcher, Dudu the doppler, Chapelle the doppler, the doppler from the witcher contract an elusive thief and many other Dopplers! I've always wondered if they were immortal, and if they can have children, either with another doppler or any species they morph into.
That would raise some serious questions... What happens with inerspecies sex, morphing during pregnancy etc....
I hope in the Witcher from Netflix they will show more friendly dopplers (like Dudu) than the one who was hired by Cahir.
He's obviously got a problem with his head and he clearly has a split personality.

Great video, I don't mind the idea of some dopplers being evil or homicidal/criminal as it gives them each a unique personality. However, I thought Nilfgaard using one like in the Netflix show was a bit silly as mages would just see through the dopplers appearance or they would use silver traps. Also the sophistication of the Nilfgaardian armies and all it's divisions, spies, saboteurs, etc would be a great video to see.
Mages cant see through dopplers. They are impossible to differentiate, only silver works

@@ironfoot1938 Even if true Highers Vampires can detect them, dopplers could take their appearence and use it for intimidation on others species (monsters or humanoids, included bruxas, alps,...)

Which is confusing. Seeing how they inherit memories they also inherit battle experience, so it makes no sense as to why they wouldnt be able to utilize the full extent of Geralt’s body

I have wondered one thing though. How did Dudu manage to imitate a dead person like Menge? I understand that Dudu met Cyprian, but I don't think he was ever face to face with Menge? Or maybe he was?
I don't know if the doppler could really understand my feelings on a few things as I don't really understand them myself. How would a doppler deal with cognitive dissonance? I think a lot of people have it and don't realize they do.
It's actually stated in the books by Dudu when he takes on Geralt's appearance that he understands even the thoughts Geralt had sort of pushed down (hence how he knew Geralt wouldn't kill him)!
I'd bet they perceive it but can interpret them purely out of experience

The fact that menga offers geralt the silver goblet and says that dopplers turn into rancid jelly when they grip it disproves the idea that dopplers can only shift into something similar in mass to them and that they cant become a chair and revert back.

There's a huge theme you completely ignored in this video, humans are often worse than the monsters.
There is no general "nature" for dopplers, they are all individuals and are individually capable of great good or great evil. Just because they are a doppler doesn't mean they will avoid fighting or avoid using their abilities when they need to or feel it to be necessary.

Dopplers likely don't have different sexes, since they could turn into anything anyway. That's not to say there couldn't be different gender roles, however

yes, i have just looked it up in the witcher Wiki. The entire van Moorlehem Family is an invention of the makers of Gwent. So technically, they are not canon.

These leaders were actually created by CDPR themselves so there's only a limited amount of Lore on them unfortunately
So going by the game at least it appears dopplers can't heal injuries by shape-shifting.
Also I wonder if it's possible for Doppler to take on the form of someone so evil they become corrupted by it. Which could explain the evil murderous Doppler in the graphic novel.
I never understood how a doppler could copy weapons or clothing. I mean I get the skin/bone transformation but how do you turn your skin into a useable weapon with magical properties?

There's a quest, I think DLC, called I think "Novograd's most wanted" that has one.
It ends in Skellige.
Doppler wasnt evil though, just one of a gang of magical creatures led to vigilantism by a very angry werewolf.

It’s a German word though isn’t it? So what you’re saying is it’s an English word but the English use German instead? Like the other comment about kindergarten, is that just another English word spelled using the German language that Germans themselves don’t use? What about poltergeist? That’s German for “noisy ghost”. Is that another example? Either way it’s interesting, confusing and has made me really curious. Maybe it’s because the British and German royals have interchanged over the centuries and have many ties. Maybe that’s why they are English invented words using the German language.

Since most of them formed settlements with their fellow countrymen, they kept their native language at first and when the american english formed and evolved it kind of mixed with the european languages. You're explanation as to why doppler's dont morph into inanimate objects is rather sound a to work off of that I think there my be a self preservation instinct to not morph into anything that doesn't have a brain. So even if a doppler wanted to perhaps their instincts just wouldn't let them.
If the Doppler turned into someone who's sick, with the plague for example, would they have the plague? Would they still have it after turning into something else or do diseases not apply?
It's also entirely possible that there could have been multiple conjunctions in the world's history.

In modern high german (my native language), a Doppelgänger ist just someone who is a copy of someone else physicaly but also in personality. Going as far as that two person having the same Name are the Doppelgänger of each other and vice versa. But that what you told is correct to a certain extend. It is an old legend that in both world wars, housewives would see their husbands standing as a supernatural appereance in the house suddenly, the exact same moment when the husbands acctualy died on the frontline.
Say, are there mages that got into magic later in life? Otherwise maybe mages that learned magic in an autodidactic way? Up to this point, I've only heard about mages that learned from magic schools and as aprentices to other mages. It would be interesting to hear about it. This subject came to mind when hearing about Albert Vagelbud who started to become somewhat interested in alchemy and when Geralt became an aprentice it Grimest despite his age. (That aprenticeship was obviously not entirely serious, but still.)

I was not a fan of how dopplers are shown in the show. One description used in sword of destiny is creatures capable of great empathy which I would assume would help a great deal with their transformation.It would be repugnant for a doppler to thus act in an evil manner if they transformed into a good person such as Mousesack. Their law is fascinating

It's likely they'd also experience the dysmorphia and take some time to gather their thoughts enough to try it out. Post-change to what the dysmorphia says is correct, they might feel a sense of confusion given the original likely wouldn't have a basis for what to feel in that scenario. Alternative, It might be like a brain wipe going "huh...why did I do that?" or maybe going with the mindset of the individual, they'd feel intense euphoria/belonging before remembering they aren't that person and ultimately change back. It would likely be a massive yet short lived high achieving life-long goals of the people they mimic, an instant reminder they aren't that person which drives them to another form.
