- There are two aesthetic options when it comes to pleating a traditional, knife-pleated kilt -- Sett and Stripe. But what does "pleated to the sett" vs. "pleated to the stripe" mean?
When you order a custom 8-yard kilt, you are usually able to choose one or the other. But how do you know which is best for you? We have an easy test!

I'm planning to get a great kilt soon. This is super helpful! I don't think any stripe on the tartan is bold enough to justify pleating to the stripe. I figured that was the reason, but it's good to have confirmation! Cheers.
In September I went to order my first kilt . A friend of mine went with me and was trying to take over all the decisions I had to make . The one thing that I did not know was sett or stripe . My friend who likes all things military told me choose the stripe . My tartan is the Muir tartan that has a very strong yellow stripe on it . I chose the stripe because of his interference but had doubts and two days later phoned the kilt makers and told them I wanted the sett . The women I was talking to agreed that pleating to the stripe would be too much for that tartan . ( I would have looked like a bumble bee from the back . ) I do want a kilt to the stripe one day because in the right tartan they do look great but if there is any doubt go with the sett . I don't think I have seen a video yet where I thought you gave bad advice . Cheers
Thank you, Rick. I'm really glad you pulled that out of the fire and got what your gut told you was the right choice!
I prefer pleat to set, it's too bury, in my opinion pleated to the stripe, (too close to the lawn chair look for me.) Hey Lucas!!!
I prefer set to stripe... I’ve got my Blue & red Macbeth set to stripe on the red... makes the back look purple.
Isn't that the Scottish heritage kilt. I have a very similar one and its called Scottish heritage in UK.
