  • "If you train hard the fight is easy" -
Sewing the pleats is less tedious and goes more quickly because I spent the time to clearly mark the pleat widths at waist and hip,
Once I reached the halfway point - the centre pleat - I measured from the centre of the centre pleat to the outside (right) edge of the first pleat.
Hint: make the measurement BEFORE you check the label to see what the measurement should be - you'll be surprised at the lengths your subconscious will go to delude you into thinking you got it right!)
Having confirmed that the pleat-widths are as they should be I then carry on sewing the rest of the pleats.
...if there IS an error in the pleats, then you're just going to have to unpick them and start over - bummer, but that's how we learn...

It's been really fun to watch this kilt come together. Looking very good, indeed. Thanks for all the fascinating videos!

I cannot express enough how much I love watching you explain/take apart/demonstrate how the kilt is fabricated and how, ultimately it should fit. I remember going to ALD kilts in Clydebank(the old Singers factory) when I was 21 and they measured me in 10 minutes. One month later and all I had to do was pick up the kilt. It's in ancient Murray and I still have it, though the days of my 28" waist and 9 1/2 stone frame are a distant 32 year memory. The fact that you have more than one fitting indicates the level you are prepared to go to ensure a CRACKING kilt. Thank you very much for explaining. Slainthe mhath from Scotland in springtime....that's 4 degrees centigrade!

I'm normally also a fan of pleating to the stripe, mostly because so many of the tartans that "require" pleating to the sett are so darn busy that I get a headache just thinking about how they'd work, just from the point of view that I wouldn't want to subject a person to making it work. My first kilt was the Red MacLeod and just looking at it makes me feel bad for the lady who made it. This particular sett looks reasonable to me.

That is a rather striking tartan. Is that Navy Blue or Black? What tartan is this?
