Having a bespoke kilt made by a small or independent Scottish kilt maker is beyond quality, it's a legacy, treasure, and if measured correctly, knowing you have the optimum fit. Also particularly rewarding to know you have gone directly to support these wonderful, highly skilled kilt makers.
    Same goes for USA kilts.

I have a USAK Premier in Hamilton Red Modern 16oz made by Mac that is delightful. It is better built than my Scottish made Hamilton Hunting 16oz. They cost about the same (plus import duty on the Scottish one) & the fabrics are from the same mill.
I wear the red one more often by choice.

From one tartan mill to the next can tartan thread counts slightly increase or decrease in proportion to the rest of its sett and the tartan is not different enough to the point that it is a completely different tartan?

    I have a question!
Has the Isle of Skye tartan become the the new Black Watch? It seems to be popping up as rental material more and more frequently.
I recently dropped Facebook and other social media (too angry out there), so I hope you see this question. Thanks!

Now I will say this. I have yet to get a custom-made kilt but I look forward to it once I am able to get my family Tartan is registered. But, I have found that whether they are TV, advertised, or X higher that sizing can be inconsistent. And this can be a little frustrating, to have the inside flap stop at the middle of your left knee and you have all the straps on the middle hole. But then you order another coat from the same place and it’s over a little further even. Then I’ve ordered the exact same size kilt from someone else and it’s total diameter is different. So we’re one kilt will fit perfect in the middle hole the other Hass to be even wider or looser. Very inconsistent. And I think some X higher kilts are either labeled wrong and sizing sometimes or maybe if it’s the last one they have and somebody really needs it they may alter it.

I don't doubt the quality of kilts made by USA Kilts. The proof comes from the customers themselves. I have never purchased a kilt from them, but I have purchased many accessories from USA Kilts. Great people to do business with.
I purchased my first two kilts from another U.S.-based company long before I knew of USA Kilts. The kilts are wonderful. The other eight kilts I own were made by a wonderful kiltmaker in Glasgow. Perfectly crafted hand-stitched kilts. It came down to cost, for me. The kilts I have made in Glasgow cost less, even with shipping, than I can get from any company in the U.S. On top of that, I can order the kilt and be wearing it within two weeks, max. Paying less for a 8-yard, 16oz, worsted wool kilt and not sacrificing quality means a lot.

Are you contemplating issuing a warrant of your own to All American Clothing?
I'm sure that warrnts issued by the Royal Family are more important here (UK) than in America, just imagine if the President issued such endorsements, surely that would be of value to American manufacturers?

I used to be able to find ex-military secondhand or military surplus kilts in many Scottish secondhand shops, and they'd be dead cheap. That supply may have dried up a bit, with so many infantry battalions disbanded/amalgamated, but there have got to be lots of used kilts flying around Scotland, available at bargain prices. That might be one source. The newer, cheaper "casual" kilt styles may provide more.

  • @alexselby349

Be careful with "Scottish Made" kilts... some may be ropey ex hires brought into Scotland from Pakistan and sold on, rather than one from a genuine Scottish Kiltmaker who has sourced the wool and sewn, basted, stitched it themselves. The higher the price, the better the quality, and vintage ones are good to find on ebay etc...
