Ltt has much more indepth videos on modern hardware and accessories for improving the experience. But if you had none of the hardware and no crt. They are ahead of anything a LCD could ever dream of in terms of picture, response times, latency and pretty much anything.
      But to make up for all its upsides that would otherwise make it the king of display technologies, they have major issues with burn in.

      this probably was filmed before, but uploaded after. But if you're any level of tech enthusiast, you already knew OLED had issues long before LTT even touched it. same reason I never bought in to plasma personally. even though my LCD (Toshiba UX600 i think is the model #) had a fairly rudimentary first generation local dimming, it didn't suffer from burn in and I was happy with that.
      Now I have a 4k LCD with a beautiful picture, even if the blacks aren't inky. I've always felt that was a little overblown tbh.

      @@yz249 OLEDs do completely destroy LED LCD displays in picture quality and color reproduction. But he made a ton of really valid points about why it maybe isn't the best for the PC. PCs have a lot of static images that can and will get burned onto the screen. Unless you enjoy the Windows logo following you across your gaming adventures, OLED is probably not ideal for a PC.
      If you have money to burn and you don't mind buying a new display every couple years, then yeah, go for it. But my main LED LCD display is 11 years old this year and still looks the same as the day I bought it.

    "local dimming adds processing delay" sounds like OLED marketing BS to me.
    We're talking about taking the brightness of a pixel group (so R+G+B for each pixel, literally 2xn arithmetic sums of 8bit integers, then take the mean for the group, which is just addition then division), then transforming that into a backlight brightness output by multiplying by some factor. Then just do that a few hundred or thousand more times for each local dimming zone.
    Back of the napkin math for 1000 dimming zones on a 1440p display says we're talking ~10^7 simple operations per frame (if my 5am sleep deprived maths is correct), which last I checked is trivial for a modern programmable CPU (with clock frequency alone measured in GHz ie 10^9 or over 100x greater, not to mention actual operations per clock), to say nothing of the purpose-built chip on your TV motherboard.
    This is a cool video but I've gotta say I'm not really a fan of the more marketing spiel style seen here and in the sprinkling of other videos like it.

    • @260Xander
      @260Xander Před 2 lety +2

      While you're mostly onto something, soc's in displays are cost-driven not performance-driven, and during operation they're probably already using close to, if not already over 100% of processor time doing the stuff it usually does to process, post-process and then display the pic WITHOUT adding additional processing for local dimming, along with additional IO and function calls to do that, it's expensive on those processors in terms of overhead, because there's usually literally none left already. So yes I'm sure there's a few ms if not more saved by disabling local diming.
      edit: i felt your last sentence more than I wish i do...

      Wasn't the OLED Video a few days ago more about the office use, because of burn in? Light pixel areas in gaming vary from game to game, so unless you play games like forza 24/7, where you have a steady tachometer on screen it shouldn't really matter too much in gaming.
      I still get your point, but if you use the screen more or less exclusively for gaming, you shouldn't really get the burn in issues, which was the main problem in the other video.

    • @yanbar3433
      @yanbar3433 Před 2 lety

      Actually to add to that: With static UI Elements like Crosshairs, and Tachometers, the Pixelshift Feature on those displays should also work better, because when you shift a big white Chrome or word window by a few pixels every so often most of the pixels still ar light and only the borders see the benefits.
      When you shift the smaller UI Elements, more of the light pixels should be "destressed" more often.

      OLED displays are not a great choice for professional/work use where day in and day out you'll have the exact same windows up in the exact same places.
      But for gaming and general content consumption OLED displays are the best, bar-none. There is potential risk if you play one game and only one game for 1000 of hours, but for most people's mixed content consumption, they work phenomenally well.

    no, they were designed for 14-21 inch screens.
    in the 90's a 30 inch CRT was the equivalent of an 80 or 90 inch TV today. 14" CRTs have been replaced by 30" LCDs, 20" CRTS replaced by 40-55" LCD, and 30" CRT by 75-90"
    hell, you even have an equivalent between trinitron CRTs and OLEDs. if you had a 32" trinitron CRT, you were on some king shit with the 90's equivalent of an 80 inch HDR 1000 OLED.

      @Arkanrais: true. Mitsubishi MegaView Pros went up to 42" (40" viewable) and were considered "presentation" monitors. MSRP for the 42" one was something like $13,000. Still, maybe more useful than a projector of the era? They could also sync to PAL, SEACAM, NTSC, VGA, other random RGBHV signals and had resolution not too far off from 1080p, long before 1080p was an ATSC standard. Albeit, those are rarer to find than Sony PVMs, which tend to be prized, even now, among gamers.

      I mean come on let's have some nuance here - there's a pretty stark contrast between the circumstances. Using an OLED TV for enjoying a variety games (retro or otherwise) as part of a home entertainment system entails, at least for the overwhelming majority of consumers, a very distinct set of operating conditions and wear patterns from using an OLED monitor for day to day productivity.
      The video on burn-in was in the context of a year of full work-days displaying the same windows in the same configuration. Again I think it's fair to say that people putting this in their home on their wall for casual after-work gaming will probably be playing a variety of games and doing so in short intervals (relative to a work day), or watching other content.
      Unless you ONLY play one game and play it day-in day-out, the pixel lifespan of this display is probably longer than the technology will be relevant.

    I usually don't mind, even when the entire premise of the video is based around some sponsorship or another. I don't know if it was just the amount of ad content or if it was because it involved breaking up the video to talk about the various virtues of the monitor that were just barely tangentially related to the main topic (playing retro games), but this just seemed like a bit much to me.
    My opinion only though. If a video like this every now and then is what allows you to do the cool stuff you do, then more power to you, but I just felt the brand integration could have been handled a bit better.
