Amen. The past few years I've liquidated my entire retro collection - all systems I bought when they were new, nothing bought used. PSone, genesis, dreamcast, nes, snes, n64, PS3, original xbox, atari lynx, Gameboy etc. I sold them all locally, one at a time, in person, at extremely fair prices. Everyone I sold to was so excited and grateful that I had these still, and that I was willing to let go of them at normal prices. It brought me joy knowing how excited these people were.
This is why the mini consoles that you showed during the video and products like the Evercade really appeal to me. I get to own legitimate copies of these games without needing to pay through the roof for them while also not taking up a tonne of space. My collection looks good and it takes me about 5 seconds to plug one in and start playing. I don't really care if it's just emulation at the end of the day, I'm just happy to be able to play these games again, or in many cases, experience games I never had the chance to when I was younger.
I think the space issue is so often not talked about. How many people live in cities (and I mean proper cities) where space is at a premium? Like I’ve lived in NYC and SF for years. The idea of having an entire basement full of bulky physical media was insane. You just wouldn’t do it. But did I give up my love of retro games? No. I found different (i.e. “compact”) ways of playing those older titles. Personally, I think grown men with walls and walls of video games is a little… odd. I love video games, I do. But my family? Not so much. My friends? Not really. It’s just me and my games so why would I dedicate this insane amount of floor space to media that, let’s face it, I’ll never have time to use. In the end, it’s a form of materialism. And who’s ever said “materialism is awesome!”
It’s the games, not the platform. These kids are enjoying software that was designed, developed and loved in an era past. As a father myself, I understand this guy’s pride and it warms my heart that his kids are having fun and enjoying themselves. That’s all that actually matters IMO. I have a mix of clones and original media, and I don’t really give a fig what my daughter plays. Just. Have. Fun. That’s why these games were made in the first place, right?
Yup. Between my son and I we have 2 PS5 systems, 2 Nintendo switch systems and he’s got a top of the line gaming Pc system while I have a low end pc. This kid rarely plays on any of them because he’s found my old systems from when I was a kid and he plays on those. He plays my PS1,my PS3,my Nintendo GameCube,my Super Nintendo,my original Nintendo,my Dreamcast and my Nintendo 64. He’s lovin everything on those old systems makes me feel like I wasted money buying all the new stuff but love that he’s lovin it all. I even jump in and play the games with him most of the time.

As a kid, we didn't have a lot of money so I was thankful for the games I got to play growing up, but I also know I missed out on a lot of great gaming experiences. As an adult, I'm trying make up for those lost experiences by building my own retro game collection and sharing those experiences with my kids. For example, I've recently picked up and started playing Chrono Trigger for the first time. 5 hours in and I'm loving it! My kids also love the Megaman games of old. That's what retro gaming is all about to me.
Yeah it doesn't matter how you play it as long as you play it. I played Chrono Trigger on the Wii VC and it's still one of my favorite games of all time.
I just played Donkey Kong on the NES for the first time, and it was amazing. I really had fun and enjoyed it, and I was a Playstation kid, that was my first console, and I'm an Xbox guy now. Good software is good software, regardless of the time or place.
The worst part about these types of behaviour patterns is that they treat new people to hobbies as if they're somehow inferior because they're not as skilled or knowledgeable in that hobby.
These day I’m just emulating . It used to be fun to collect but now everyone thinks every Nintendo and sega game is worth hundreds of bucks ..I’m good with the raspberry pie and the mini systems . I’ve pretty much collected what I’ve wanted anayways at reasonable prices
Retro elitis absolutely killed my love for this stuff. I'd rather buy a re-release and support the devs, or just find something else. We had a customer at the game store I worked at who claimed playing a greatest hits edition of a game was basically emulation because you're not playing an original print. It doesn't even make sense.
I'd love if Sega or Nintendo released these systems as a legacy, with classic games but we know that won't happen lol I'll keep my retro love to filling up storage space in my hard-drive and importing them to my Steam Deck.
There's magic inside of that original cart and a kind of synergy with the original console that can't be replicated on a clone system. It harkens back to the days when there was no other way to play it and thus playing original cart/console is often seen as "The Real McCoy" in terms of authenticity and the genuine creators intention. Jerknerds simply have massive social deficiencies and are misunderstood. I bet those first two commenters thought they were being helpful and imagined they were being epic heroes helping that father give his kids the true OEM experience. They're just idiots with poor upbringing and exposed to too much cultural decay.
On the plus side the greatest hits prints are newer discs and you can laugh at their overpriced drink coaster when it gets disc rot and your greatest hits version is still playable.
You nailed it!!!! I moved from The U.S. to Tokyo in 2009. I brought all my consoles with me even though space is at a premium. I have a wife and two kids and I set up most of the consoles plugged into a Framemeister to upscale them and for the fake scanlines which I actually like. Their is always a CRT bro in the comments of every post I make on Reddit. The tops was when I finally replaced my lost childhood Colecovision with a new/old stock one I found on Ebay. I had it RGB and composite modded (you need the composite mod if you want to play 2600 games on it too) and despite the Colecovision out of the box not being able to work on any Japanese TV CRT or modern TV here, they literally said, "You have just cut the horn off a unicorn." They then went on to say I should have left it in the box as a collector's item. Besides having the output modded (which looks amazing btw) I had the system recapped as well and the VRAM replaced because that goes bad on Colecovisions or might have already been bad on mine. I feel like I have restored it and made it usable like an old car. These gatekeepers can get f|_|cked.
"Should have left it in the box" This is why, for me, I can't get into graded games. The idea that these games are locked away forever is disappointing to me. I own a boxed copy of Shantae; between keeping it boxed up and maintaining its value as a collector's item, versus leaving it open and playable but not worth as much, I'll take the latter... because it's worth come more from its ability to be played as a game, not boxed up forever. It's meant to be played with, it's meant to be enjoyed! It's value doesn't come from being boxed up forever. The ability to play it at all is what makes it a "unicorn" to begin with!!
It almost feels that in the pursuit of finding the ultimate way to play our favourite video game classics, we tend to forget to have fun with them in the meantime. Remember fun? You know, the whole reason you liked playing (retro) video games in the first place? Focus on that, and the rest will either come on its own, or turn out to not be that important anyway.
This is honestly true. I remember when the Sega mini came out and a CZcams channel I like a lot went on a whole thing about “just go to a flea market and buy the real thing”. Like that’s so easy and affordable for the regular person.

Simply the cost of a copy of Castlevania Bloodlines is basically the cost of the Mini. There is a good argument for buying the mini, not just for a few expensive games on it, but unreleased in your region games like the Mega Man Wily Wars. Plus it's a cheaper way to try some of the games on it, and then buy physical copies if you decided you liked them enough.
In retro gaming I definitely found two distinct schools of thought. The people who take it as a hobby and it's all about revisiting the games they grew up with and are fond off, and the collector elite who believe there's only one "right" way to play retro games. At the end of the day, it's all about playing the games we love in whatever way is accessible to us. And if we can share that love of games with younger generations all the better
I wanna collect some consoles, but im not against emulators and clone consoles, because emulators have now more quality of life features wich is making gameplay better in some hard retro games, like rewind, save states, fast loadings, and etc Ond thing i hate chinise retro console makers, which as like parasites making cheap consoles with bad and poor emulation, its just wasting money
I'm most certainly on the "retro elite" side of things, however I won't complain about people playing on emulator (or emulator in a custom box). When I started collecting there was a huge difference in quality between emulator and console, and for the vast majority of things people like to play (in the west) this is become next to no difference. I'd compare it to eating in a restaurant and eating take-out from that same restaurant, one is tailor made experience and the other is highly customizable but fundamentally you'd be eating the same food. Granted at this point in time I'm so deep into console and micro-computer collecting (and modding) that the stuff I get are either so obscure, so technically weird or so regional that there are no emulators for it or they're extremely poor quality. Like It's only last year, nearly 50 years after the console was released that all Cassette Vision games where dumped (due to them basically being hardware on a chip with the console functioning as a video out and control module) or the PC98 where there are 3 "big" emulators all of which have between poor and ok-ish compatibility. That said, being of the old guard of collecting, I don't get the people that are all about getting it in the box complete and not really using it or try to keep everything "original". Aside from keeping things "original" means that your stuff will break down in disintegrate due to lack of maintenance alone (leaky caps and batteries are the bane of my existence), things need to be used. If you buy it for the box sitting on the shelf to me it feels like you're just an investor cosplaying as a collector.
I used to be a collector and I stopped around 2009. Primarily because my interests shifted and I just didn't have the space. Prices around that time were still pretty reasonable and you could easily find deals at garage sales and swap meets. Prices are just insane now and places like DKOldies just drive up the price everywhere else. Now I just strictly emulate. Almost everything up to PS1 is pretty much spot on and N64 and up gets better every day.
I’m with you brother. I haven’t sold off my collection yet but I can feel the day is coming. However, my goal has always been about playing games. Collecting was a distant second. What I’ve noticed is, for the most part, people who have walls and walls of games are less likely to actually play said games than someone like me that just needs to boot up a single source and jump in. For example, ever since I modded my 3DS and loaded up all the Fire Emblem games 2 years ago, I was able to play through all of them. It was just easier to select the file and hit play.
Definitely up to certain gen, I think emulation is the best modern solution. I think old hardware is fascinating to me, and if you got the whole set-up working, that's great. However, because the tech is 40+ years old and it's going to get even older through time naturally, it's not going to last forever unfortunately

When I was a kid, I fell in love with a game called Duck Hunt. I remember it being one of my favorites and is what started my love for light gun games as a whole and fun fact, you wanna know how I played this game? I played it on some knock off plug and play system that my family had got. I didn't know any different when I was a kid, all I knew was that there was a game called Duck Hunt and I loved it.

You hit the nail on the head with this one man. It does not matter how you play the games, the only thing that matters is enjoying the games with family and friends. People need to understand not everyone has the means or the time to hunt down all original hardware carts and tvs. My kids and I have the same amount of fun playing on our CRT with og hardware as we do playing on an emulator on pc or a modern tv. The gate keeping needs to stop, if they have time to hardware shame people they truly need to get a life.
Emulation on my MAC; is just about the only way I can play these games at home. Hacking something like an old IPad is about the only way to make an portable version.
im 50/50 on the crt thing honestly if you have one of those things with hdmi that can play the older stuff i think thats cool af but i do know theres a few that are way to expencive to get hdmi modded which i get price wise that turns me off if kids like it hey eventually if you get somthing that needs a crt get one of the small ones with the vcr player lol i played on one of those for years xD but honestly gatekeeping isnt cool at all :| if someone wants to have a clone console that has hdmi on it let them ...
100% agree. I am a long time collector and I am in this hobby because I love retro games so I want as many people as possible to be able to experience these games. If that means emulation or clone consoles, so be it. The important thing is that these games are being appreciated by a generation who didn't grow up with them and I think that's awesome. Do I prefer to own the original game/hardware? Sure, but that's just me and it's perfectly fine if people would rather emulate or find some other means to play them. With prices being what they are, I don't blame them.
Game companies are missing out on tons of money by bot supporting emulation. Especially nintendo. Imagine an official nintendo emulator for every retro nintendo system. For say 60$ each system paid software no " service". Official protected file type roms for say 20$ each. People like me would jump on it. Official supported software.... no more messing around to emulate. Download and play and never have to pirate or worry about viruses and its gonna run the way it should.
I've been saying it for a long time that the problem with the community is the community. Its very unfortunate and of course it isn't everyone. Hopefully it trends the other way one day.

One of the most requested games in our house when family and friends get together is Outlaw (Gunslinger) on an Atari 2600 emulator on our HD TV. These are kids who usually play Fortnite, Minecraft, Call of Duty etc. The hobby nerds take all the fun out of the hobby. And this doesn't just apply to retro gaming. Great video!
Crazy how back in 2015 when i started collecting a lot of my nintendo stuff especially gamecube, the cost of games was at a very fair rate. It wasnt until 2020 when i started collecting for gamecube again when I realized how fucked up retro game collecting had become. Like RGT, I truly think that this bubble will never pop and prices will keep going up indefinitely.
A friend has a full set for the Gamecube. The last games he was missing were insanely expensive. Nowadays, you probably wouldn't manage to buy all the games for the Gamecube at all. I'm afraid this will get worse when eventually only digital games will really be available. I have about 200 games for the Switch. I hope that I will be able to buy missing games for normal prices in the future.
I also bought a lot of old consoles around 10 - 12 years ago and never payed more than 50 bucks except for an NES in OVP with a bunch of games for which i payed 80. Some stuff was just piling up at ebay like new dreamcast peripherals. I think I got a full set of controllers, some memory cards and rumblepacks for 25. I don't think all prices will be going up indefinetely because the companys will find ways to cash in on the market if it keeps on growing. lol.
I'm glad that the prices aren't to crazy here in Sweden. There are a few snes games that is very expensive like the mega man x games, but i bought the Japanese versions instead for a lot cheaper. Yesterday i bought rc pro am 2 to the nes and that's really expensive. It's one of the most expensive to the NES here. Cost like 350-360$ now days which is really expensive. Was a lot cheaper a couple of years ago. Most games have not increased so much, several is cheaper now than a few years ago. Rc pro am 2 is definitely the most expensive game i now own. Otherwise it's like 95-140$ games like little Samson, Chip and Dale 2 and so on that is my most expensive titles.
Also you have to keep in mind that there are no new "Old Carts" being produced by the companies. So whatever is out there is it. This is also why prices will hold. I play through emulation but own 86 NES games. 47 of them are CIB. I'm not willing to pay more than $200 for a cart...and that's pushing it hard. So no Ninja Gaiden III CIB or the original Super Mario Bros for me.
The eBay goodwill yard sale flipper is our biggest problem. Some people are quitting their job to live off the hobby not saying you can't sell your stuff but don't buy stuff just because someone else might want it that's called being a middle man in drugs and is frowned upon 😂 #CRT gang though

When I was overseas for study , my mom gifted some of my old consoles like SNES to my nephew because she was just cleaning up storage space and no idea about the value of my stuff, but I’m ok because my nephew likes those retro games. Then the next winter I went back for holiday and spent some time playing SNES with my nephew. Man , my eyes really hurt when I actually play on those old hardwares,I got so used to 4K 60fps tv , just cannot go back anymore. Emulation is my first choice afterwards, I have no regret leaving those techs behind. I also suggest my nephew not to play too long each time , really bad for eyes.
I have the old consoles and I bought a Retro trio because it's easy and simple. I like having the physical game cartridges for my childhood and sharing it with my kids without all the drama of having 19 old systems hooked up. you are 1000k percent correct! thanks for bringing this up and speaking about it. much respect
Great video , I used to own old consoles like the NES , SNES, Mega Drive , but I dont have them anymore so the best way for me to play right now is emulation. Last year I decided to start buying physical retro consoles. It was fun and especially as I still remember the original space invaders cabinet entering the Arcades. My coolest find was a boxed Super Nintendo Super Mario World bundle which I had when it originally released. After stripping it down to clean, get the correct cables that came with it & being very pleased with my journey. My wife seeing my pride in my mission then said what will you do with it now. I proudly announced that now I have got it working and played one stage it will be boxed back up & put away. At this point it dawned on me what I was doing. No longer was it about the game I adored on release but about bragging rights & it would likely never get played again due to setup time & space. I decided to sell my retro collection & head down the road of emulation handhelds. I am now the proud owner of a Steam Deck, AYN Odin pro & more recent RG35xx. I have all my beloved games to hand & play them daily. Thank you to those that bought my original collection though as I made a nice little profit that paid for my new toys, All this said hats off to those that have the time & space as that is full on retro but for me I wan't retro convenience & see the guy with his kids playing retro on anything as great.

I remember when I stumbled upon an online version of sonic the hedgehog when I was probably 6 or 7 and I played the mess out of that. My dad was so proud of me because it reminded him of his genesis. He promptly went to the attic to pull it out and show me and he even let me play sonic on it for a bit. He didn’t go get it because he wanted me to “play it the right way” but because he was excited to show me a piece of his child hood. I still played the online version of sonic after that but it was so cool to see the original hardware.
I run into people all the time who just want to play games the "official" way or buy merch that is "official". Then they complain about prices or that thier item died. Or they shame others for not having/using "official" products.

Very well said!! I myself am just now getting back into retro gaming, showing my two kids the games I grew up with. I may be starting with a small selection but I am looking forward to growing the game library with my kids.
I bought all my rare Super Nintendo games way back before the prices went crazy. Super Mario RPG, Lufia 2, Final Fantasy 2 and 3. All complete in box. I couldn’t possibly afford them now.

Been playing video games for over 40 years now, and when i see pictures of parents showing off their kids playing old video games, it actually warms my cold dead heart... kudos to that father.
100% agree, you get people like this in any collector group. I used to have a fairly sizeable collection of old stuff, but due to life, family, space, I have whittled this down somewhat. Most retro stuff I play these days is via emulation, it has gotten so good now it's almost indistinguishable to real hardware. Could be via an OG Xbox, Rpi3 or whatever, the kids & I have a great time.
I think part of it is subconscious fear these people have that a) they have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on games that can be experienced almost exactly the same via emulation b) if the cat gets out of the bag that most consoles are very well emulated in 2023 the value of the collection may decline.
As an individual who’s been collecting video games since Middle School and also trying to get people to play these retro games I agree with you 100%. Some people don’t have the means to afford a retro console and some people don’t want that authentic experience, they just want to play the games and that’s all ok. I think the online retro video gaming scene has a lot of big issues but this one definitely needed to be brought to light. It’s about what you play not how you play it. I agree with what you're saying, but I consider the price points to still be a problem too. Yeah yeah supply and demand and all that...but the fact that I'm merely looking for games that are the farthest thing from pristine condition, all I ask is that they work....and they're still $50+ for even that, is crazy to me, and it only goes up from there. I got me an N64 recently, and it came with 5 wrestling games (Nitro, World Tour, Revenge, WM2000 and No Mercy), and I bought Goldeneye and Ocarina of Time...the latter two I had to buy copies that literally look like they've been used every day for the last 25 years just to get a decent price for them and they were still nearly $40 and OoT barely works (I have to keep removing it and reinserting it until it does). And I'm already spent on this hobby...and I'm already considering an Everdrive just to be done with this madness, but that damn thing is $200. The fact that there are people willing to OVERPAY for things is why everyone thinks they need to OVERPRICE. It's still a problem...and all I'm talking about here is low end. I basically had to dig through the trash just to find something reasonable. I shouldn't have to do that.
Wow...I actually agree to the fullest with this one. I don't believe retro game prices will ever hit a plateau or even come down. And people can play what systems they want to play on, whether through emulation, clone systems, original hardware, digital purchases, plug n' plays, etc. The variety is what makes people's choices interesting.

My friend for 30 years or so is finally getting rid of the majority of his gaming collection. Tons of respect for him because he got kids now and just having a few things and maybe a Mister or Retro pie will be enough to get his fix but also share with his kids. Joy on a kid is what matters.
I have been selling my retro games because of my classic and mini consoles but I was genuinely surprised when I found one of my twins playing the NES Nintendo online service I never set it up for them, but he managed to find his favorite games like Kirby and Mario and started to beat LOL, consider me impressed.
I’ve been playing retro games ever since I was in elementary through emulators,collections,rom hacks etc. And I think it’s really dumb to call out someone for not playing on the original hardware when it’s getting older,more expensive,and harder to play on since the games are gonna look like trash on a modern television through original hardware or not supported at all
I loved collecting classics and I had alot of them before they got too expensive. Now I've just thrown in the towel for retro collecting and discovered the mod scene. My 3DS plays every handheld Nintendo software, my Wii U plays 3 generations of Nintendo, and my SNES mini plays all my favourite SNES games. My Vita also plays alot of playstation classics. I'll still be buying the newer games.
When I was younger, I remember going to a video rental store(shout out to Box Office Video) and renting E.V.O. This became one of my favorite games. When Ebay was in its infancy, I bought this game for $50, just so I could relive the experience of playing it again. In 2017, I had an opportunity to go to California. It was a spur of the moment trip. At this point in time, I was using an emulator. So, even though it was a little sad selling that and my earthbound game, I did it without hesitation. I realized that it was never about owning the physical copy, it was about the feelings I got when I played the game. I still get to enjoy the games I love and I had a great time in Cali. I think that sometimes people forget why they love games in the first place.
I went through a phase myself not so much with consoles, but retro computer systems. I had C64s, Atari 800, TRS-80s, some old Apple IIs, even a complete Coleco Adam with the freaking daisy wheel printer. Once emulators started getting good, I dumped all the old computers that were filling my 1 bedroom apartment at the time and never looked back. Never did miss that ancient hardware...since I can still play all the games and THAT is what matters. My only regret is when I dumped all this stuff it was the mid-late 90's... and NOBODY wanted old computers then, sold a couple of systems via eBay for nearly nothing. I think the 100% working Adam ended up in the landfill. 😔
I fully concur with your observation. I have witnessed similar types of comments and gatekeepers within our over 40 Retro Gamers Hub communities. Such behavior is not tolerated and these individuals are promptly banned from both the specific group and our entire platform without prior warning. As you pointed out, there is no place for this kind of behavior within the retrogaming community and it is not acceptable. You're right, Mr. RGT. That's the root of it. That's exactly what leads to everything else - the game prices, the grading elitism, how some stores devalue their intake (buys/trades), and overinflate their own sale prices. It starts there.
My thought is what parent has that much real estate in your tv stand to have all 3 of those consoles hooked up at the same time. Plus, you have kids, so things get damaged.
I’m a dad of four, my 8, 6, and 3 year old are all about the games I played in the 80’s and 90’s. The joy it brings me and memories I had as a kid when these came out are renewed when we are playing together. More than that the memories I’m creating with my kids are PRICELESS. We play on the Switch, PC emulators and some of the retro consoles that have come out in recent years. Thanks for speaking out on this. Right on man, right on. I grew up with the games that are now referred to as "retro games" and it was and still is always about the games to me. Who cares where or how there are played...as long as they are played. I will be the first to say that emulation (and FPGA simulation) is much more convenient than the "old days"....and that is how I play them now at almost 50 years old ;)
Really surprised that instead of these companies building smaller retro units with 40 games on it, if they brought back a original version of those systems and started putting out all thier best titles that they know will sell on carts again they would make bank, hurt the og prices and make money they are not right now due to everyone using emulation.

Grew up in the very late 8-bit, mainly 16-bit era. Been an avid gamer since. Sold all my carts and consoles for £££ whilst at uni. Happily play the old stuff on SNES mini and Mega Drive mini. They're great and look great.
Dude! You are SO right! I think some people have lost focus on what it is all about.. it is about FUN!! Retro games, retro computers, even retro audio equipment (I belong to groups about all of these things..) You find people who will just slam you for using the wrong stuff, or not 100% original, or whatever... I have a FEW retro games/consoles, and a few old computers... but I play a lot of emulation.. it is easy, it is portable, etc.. I love the old hardware for nostalgia reasons, but on many old games, emulation is just as good, maybe better... Thanks for the video.. you are completely correct!!
The thing about it is, the retro scene overlaps with the collector scene and the collector scene by it's very nature attracts compulsive people, and if you know anything about compulsive people they are varying degrees of eccentric. As such the more compulsive types have a idea of what is the right way of doing things. Yet lack the awareness that is only their and others like themselves view. As such they feel they have to impose their views on others.
I agree 100%, and it's unfortunate. Honestly, the gatekeeping and the unholy triple-digit prices are some of the reasons I don't collect retro games that much anymore. I only care that the game is fun, and that's it.
Some of the first retro games i played as kid in the early 2000s were those plug n play systems. I didn’t have have the og hardware but that still got me interested in retro games and collecting as an adult.
I'm on the fence about retro collecting. I started rebuilding my childhood collections when the pandemic hit. Some things in my collection are...I guess rare. Course the grading community is shady. I still go to shows to buy old games..but always check my gameeye app to see it's actual value for that day before i decide to buy it. I am grateful though to companies like digital eclipse who make great retro compilations which makes at least these memories affordable. I don't really care how people play their games. Everybody has the right to enjoy what they like and how they like it.
I couldn’t agree more about it being about the games and not the hardware. I absolutely love collecting original hardware and games but some stuff is just expensive and not everyone is willing to pay some of those prices. As much as I love collecting I can’t afford to buy a lot of the GameCube and N64 stuff I like so those two are ones that I like to emulate instead!
I think this is a social media problem more than any specific community... I'm a member of quite a few Facebook groups on my various interests, from gaming, to music, to astronomy and history, and I see the exact same negativity in all of them, regardless of the topic.
I wish i had kept all my past consoles, the only one i have is the Wii, but i bought the Mega Drive Mini and Evercade VS which i love. Did want the NES/SNES mini but the price for them are ridiculous! £240 new on Amazon.
I'm so loving these new consoles and handhelds that plays these retro games for our kids and us ..And as a big nostalgia game collector ..I enjoy showing my kids the classics on new easy to use hardware ..And they have so much fun .....Let these kids experience the joy we grew up on ....just like you said bro it's not the system ...its the game that matters
I've owned many old systems in my life. I still have a few. I love watch the younger kids playing the games I grew up playing on the snes, n64, etc. I don't care about what or how they are playing it. I'm just happy that they are enjoying what I enjoyed as a kid. My brother has stopped playing games because of these complete aholes who think you must play it the old school way to enjoy the full experience. Its not about the system its about the enjoyment of said game being by the person. I have a friend who wouldn't shut up about a ps5. He would cry and pout over not being able to afford one for awhile. I don't own one and don't care at this point. This fool would go and waste literally everything, trade everything in and still not be able to get one but would instead get a Xbox or a ps4 then complain some more. The results of his complaining. No one wants to play games with him anymore or much less play at all anymore. So I know people that are like that in any generation of game systems. Its sad that the community that is huge and I love to be in are the ones who destroying and giving the community the actual bad name most on the outside look at us nowadays. I love that father for showing his kids his childhood games and those kids in turn enjoying them as well. Good job dad and thanks rgt for the video and speaking most of our minds for us. I’m happy that I got all the snes games that I want and need. I’m happy limited run made the castlevania OG collection and SOTN and Rondo on physical. And you’re right about prices not dropping as anything vintage electronic never does. Did juke boxes drop? Nope!
Your comment is exactly what I’ve would’ve wrote. I grabbed a bunch of Super Nintendo games way back in the day before prices went crazy. Mostly RPG’s, Super Mario RPG, Lufia 2, all complete in box. I couldn’t possibly afford them now.
I bought a mint manual for snes metal marines as that’s what I need for it to be cib now and now that it’s cib it’s way,way more expensive now. It came with a mint poster of legend of evermore too and which I find odd as it’s not original and it costs decent amount of money on its own.
This video made me subscribe with full bells. I'm have kids that are getting to the age they can play these games. Many games I hold dear to my heart they will be able to play now, because there are modern solutions... I can't keep a CRT just for the small amount of time we get to play together or hunt systems for which parts start failing and they become an issue finding spares for. I am thankful modern solutions exist. Keep being awesome!
This video alone got me to re-subscribe to RGT. I totally agree with him. I have a retro pi, I have the mini consoles, I have some hyperkins, I have 1up arcade cabinets and yes me and my kids play and enjoy every single one of them.
I’m just happy to play games with my kids doesn’t matter if it’s current gen or retro stuff I played at their age, cloned or original it’s just great to share this with my children the way my dad and I did growing up
Thank you for posting this , and I agree with you 100%. I love that people are buying the original systems and games, but most of all I want to see as many people as possible enjoying retro gaming. I don't want people feeling excluded or looked down by petty gatekeepers that should just live their own lives and let everyone else enjoy a game and relax. Life is to short to judge people over petty reasons.
Well put. I have never noticed this issue as i dont have any friends that like the old school games but i recently got a rg300 to play some super mario world to take me back and experience it again. Honestly you cant have a better experience playing mario with friends and family being 10 years old but my gosh does it play better in that little device. No more freezing and blowing on the cartrige to get it to work. And finally i can save my progress to finally pass the game. My kids are having a blast also. Play however you want but experience the classics, they are the best 👌
I teach a history of gaming course at our middle school and they love playing some of the classics. Arch rivals on nes has been a hit. We use clone consoles and they love it and just wanna play. It makes me happy that they have fun and some have gotten those consoles. Just opened their minds to greatness.
Every hobby pretty much has their share of gatekeepers! I have introduced my kid to Atari 2600 using the Flashback consoles... mainly the FB portable as it was easier for her to use the controller versus an original joystick. I have the CRT with my original systems in the basement, those are just nostalgia for me but I don't think that's the only way to enjoy retro gaming!
My 6-year-old daughter's been playing Mario Brothers on my game & watch and Zelda II and asking me more and more about these old games and I played. And teaching her the ways not to get upset and to practice to improve your gaming skills and hand-eye coordination.

I have to agree that the retro game prices have gotten severly out of hand, though I'm actually thankful for it. The price point was enough of a nudge to push me off the deep end, and I've ended up learning to mod and repair my retro handhelds and consoles. I still have all of my original retro games, but I've started to create custom flashcarts to build up my library. Everdrive has a pretty insane price tag, so I've started looking into just uploading single games to flashcarts, just to preserve that "feel" of loading in a cartridge that we lost with everdrive. (Which, there is a nasty bug in gbc time emulation for pokemon crystal and prism) I've even started loading romhacks into them as well, and I've learned more about not just the MBC3 cartridges, but specifically the MBC30 that was only used for the Japanese Pokemon Crystal; which, resulted in increasing the storage from 4mb to 8mb. I've spent a few months salvaging parts from "broken" cartridges to build a flashable MBC30, and I've gotten comfortable enough that I'd be willing to install replaceable cell battery mods into my old cartridges. Hasn't stopped me from supergluing my dumba- to a few components, but thanks to the scalpers and snibs, I've been having a blast to learning internal architecture of retro consoles, and expanding my collection with viable modded hardware for QoL without sacrificing the nostalgia.

Amen. The past few years I've liquidated my entire retro collection - all systems I bought when they were new, nothing bought used. PSone, genesis, dreamcast, nes, snes, n64, PS3, original xbox, atari lynx, Gameboy etc. I sold them all locally, one at a time, in person, at extremely fair prices. Everyone I sold to was so excited and grateful that I had these still, and that I was willing to let go of them at normal prices. It brought me joy knowing how excited these people were.
How did you make sure you didn’t sell to scalpers and such? Craigslist?

This is why the mini consoles that you showed during the video and products like the Evercade really appeal to me. I get to own legitimate copies of these games without needing to pay through the roof for them while also not taking up a tonne of space. My collection looks good and it takes me about 5 seconds to plug one in and start playing. I don't really care if it's just emulation at the end of the day, I'm just happy to be able to play these games again, or in many cases, experience games I never had the chance to when I was younger.

I think the space issue is so often not talked about. How many people live in cities (and I mean proper cities) where space is at a premium? Like I’ve lived in NYC and SF for years. The idea of having an entire basement full of bulky physical media was insane. You just wouldn’t do it. But did I give up my love of retro games? No. I found different (i.e. “compact”) ways of playing those older titles. Personally, I think grown men with walls and walls of video games is a little… odd. I love video games, I do. But my family? Not so much. My friends? Not really. It’s just me and my games so why would I dedicate this insane amount of floor space to media that, let’s face it, I’ll never have time to use.
In the end, it’s a form of materialism. And who’s ever said “materialism is awesome!”

It’s the games, not the platform. These kids are enjoying software that was designed, developed and loved in an era past. As a father myself, I understand this guy’s pride and it warms my heart that his kids are having fun and enjoying themselves. That’s all that actually matters IMO. I have a mix of clones and original media, and I don’t really give a fig what my daughter plays. Just. Have. Fun. That’s why these games were made in the first place, right?
Yup. Between my son and I we have 2 PS5 systems, 2 Nintendo switch systems and he’s got a top of the line gaming Pc system while I have a low end pc. This kid rarely plays on any of them because he’s found my old systems from when I was a kid and he plays on those. He plays my PS1,my PS3,my Nintendo GameCube,my Super Nintendo,my original Nintendo,my Dreamcast and my Nintendo 64. He’s lovin everything on those old systems makes me feel like I wasted money buying all the new stuff but love that he’s lovin it all. I even jump in and play the games with him most of the time.

As a kid, we didn't have a lot of money so I was thankful for the games I got to play growing up, but I also know I missed out on a lot of great gaming experiences. As an adult, I'm trying make up for those lost experiences by building my own retro game collection and sharing those experiences with my kids. For example, I've recently picked up and started playing Chrono Trigger for the first time. 5 hours in and I'm loving it! My kids also love the Megaman games of old. That's what retro gaming is all about to me.
Yeah it doesn't matter how you play it as long as you play it. I played Chrono Trigger on the Wii VC and it's still one of my favorite games of all time.
I just played Donkey Kong on the NES for the first time, and it was amazing. I really had fun and enjoyed it, and I was a Playstation kid, that was my first console, and I'm an Xbox guy now. Good software is good software, regardless of the time or place.
The worst part about these types of behaviour patterns is that they treat new people to hobbies as if they're somehow inferior because they're not as skilled or knowledgeable in that hobby.
And then they complain that no one new is entering the hobby…
These day I’m just emulating . It used to be fun to collect but now everyone thinks every Nintendo and sega game is worth hundreds of bucks ..I’m good with the raspberry pie and the mini systems . I’ve pretty much collected what I’ve wanted anayways at reasonable prices

Retro elitis absolutely killed my love for this stuff. I'd rather buy a re-release and support the devs, or just find something else. We had a customer at the game store I worked at who claimed playing a greatest hits edition of a game was basically emulation because you're not playing an original print. It doesn't even make sense.
There should be more Greatest Hits and Remastered games, not fewer!
I'd love if Sega or Nintendo released these systems as a legacy, with classic games but we know that won't happen lol I'll keep my retro love to filling up storage space in my hard-drive and importing them to my Steam Deck.
There's magic inside of that original cart and a kind of synergy with the original console that can't be replicated on a clone system. It harkens back to the days when there was no other way to play it and thus playing original cart/console is often seen as "The Real McCoy" in terms of authenticity and the genuine creators intention. Jerknerds simply have massive social deficiencies and are misunderstood. I bet those first two commenters thought they were being helpful and imagined they were being epic heroes helping that father give his kids the true OEM experience. They're just idiots with poor upbringing and exposed to too much cultural decay.

On the plus side the greatest hits prints are newer discs and you can laugh at their overpriced drink coaster when it gets disc rot and your greatest hits version is still playable.
You nailed it!!!! I moved from The U.S. to Tokyo in 2009. I brought all my consoles with me even though space is at a premium. I have a wife and two kids and I set up most of the consoles plugged into a Framemeister to upscale them and for the fake scanlines which I actually like. Their is always a CRT bro in the comments of every post I make on Reddit. The tops was when I finally replaced my lost childhood Colecovision with a new/old stock one I found on Ebay. I had it RGB and composite modded (you need the composite mod if you want to play 2600 games on it too) and despite the Colecovision out of the box not being able to work on any Japanese TV CRT or modern TV here, they literally said, "You have just cut the horn off a unicorn." They then went on to say I should have left it in the box as a collector's item. Besides having the output modded (which looks amazing btw) I had the system recapped as well and the VRAM replaced because that goes bad on Colecovisions or might have already been bad on mine. I feel like I have restored it and made it usable like an old car. These gatekeepers can get f|_|cked.
"Should have left it in the box" This is why, for me, I can't get into graded games. The idea that these games are locked away forever is disappointing to me.
I own a boxed copy of Shantae; between keeping it boxed up and maintaining its value as a collector's item, versus leaving it open and playable but not worth as much, I'll take the latter... because it's worth come more from its ability to be played as a game, not boxed up forever.
It's meant to be played with, it's meant to be enjoyed! It's value doesn't come from being boxed up forever. The ability to play it at all is what makes it a "unicorn" to begin with!!
It almost feels that in the pursuit of finding the ultimate way to play our favourite video game classics, we tend to forget to have fun with them in the meantime.
Remember fun? You know, the whole reason you liked playing (retro) video games in the first place? Focus on that, and the rest will either come on its own, or turn out to not be that important anyway.
This is honestly true. I remember when the Sega mini came out and a CZcams channel I like a lot went on a whole thing about “just go to a flea market and buy the real thing”. Like that’s so easy and affordable for the regular person.

Simply the cost of a copy of Castlevania Bloodlines is basically the cost of the Mini. There is a good argument for buying the mini, not just for a few expensive games on it, but unreleased in your region games like the Mega Man Wily Wars. Plus it's a cheaper way to try some of the games on it, and then buy physical copies if you decided you liked them enough.

The problem with modern gaming is they don’t release a finished product.
In retro gaming I definitely found two distinct schools of thought. The people who take it as a hobby and it's all about revisiting the games they grew up with and are fond off, and the collector elite who believe there's only one "right" way to play retro games. At the end of the day, it's all about playing the games we love in whatever way is accessible to us. And if we can share that love of games with younger generations all the better

I'm most certainly on the "retro elite" side of things, however I won't complain about people playing on emulator (or emulator in a custom box). When I started collecting there was a huge difference in quality between emulator and console, and for the vast majority of things people like to play (in the west) this is become next to no difference. I'd compare it to eating in a restaurant and eating take-out from that same restaurant, one is tailor made experience and the other is highly customizable but fundamentally you'd be eating the same food.
Granted at this point in time I'm so deep into console and micro-computer collecting (and modding) that the stuff I get are either so obscure, so technically weird or so regional that there are no emulators for it or they're extremely poor quality.
Like It's only last year, nearly 50 years after the console was released that all Cassette Vision games where dumped (due to them basically being hardware on a chip with the console functioning as a video out and control module) or the PC98 where there are 3 "big" emulators all of which have between poor and ok-ish compatibility.
That said, being of the old guard of collecting, I don't get the people that are all about getting it in the box complete and not really using it or try to keep everything "original". Aside from keeping things "original" means that your stuff will break down in disintegrate due to lack of maintenance alone (leaky caps and batteries are the bane of my existence), things need to be used. If you buy it for the box sitting on the shelf to me it feels like you're just an investor cosplaying as a collector.
The collecting elite make me cringe.
I used to be a collector and I stopped around 2009. Primarily because my interests shifted and I just didn't have the space. Prices around that time were still pretty reasonable and you could easily find deals at garage sales and swap meets. Prices are just insane now and places like DKOldies just drive up the price everywhere else. Now I just strictly emulate. Almost everything up to PS1 is pretty much spot on and N64 and up gets better every day.
I’m with you brother. I haven’t sold off my collection yet but I can feel the day is coming. However, my goal has always been about playing games. Collecting was a distant second. What I’ve noticed is, for the most part, people who have walls and walls of games are less likely to actually play said games than someone like me that just needs to boot up a single source and jump in.
For example, ever since I modded my 3DS and loaded up all the Fire Emblem games 2 years ago, I was able to play through all of them. It was just easier to select the file and hit play.

Definitely up to certain gen, I think emulation is the best modern solution. I think old hardware is fascinating to me, and if you got the whole set-up working, that's great. However, because the tech is 40+ years old and it's going to get even older through time naturally, it's not going to last forever unfortunately

The act like since the NES still works with a pin replacement, that all these discs, carts, and consoles are gonna just keep on trucking. When I was a kid, I fell in love with a game called Duck Hunt. I remember it being one of my favorites and is what started my love for light gun games as a whole and fun fact, you wanna know how I played this game? I played it on some knock off plug and play system that my family had got. I didn't know any different when I was a kid, all I knew was that there was a game called Duck Hunt and I loved it.
That's basically how I even knew about contra and the lightgun titles DESPITE having an original NES at the time.

You hit the nail on the head with this one man. It does not matter how you play the games, the only thing that matters is enjoying the games with family and friends. People need to understand not everyone has the means or the time to hunt down all original hardware carts and tvs. My kids and I have the same amount of fun playing on our CRT with og hardware as we do playing on an emulator on pc or a modern tv. The gate keeping needs to stop, if they have time to hardware shame people they truly need to get a life.
Emulation on my MAC; is just about the only way I can play these games at home. Hacking something like an old IPad is about the only way to make an portable version.
im 50/50 on the crt thing honestly if you have one of those things with hdmi that can play the older stuff i think thats cool af but i do know theres a few that are way to expencive to get hdmi modded which i get price wise that turns me off if kids like it hey eventually if you get somthing that needs a crt get one of the small ones with the vcr player lol

100% agree. I am a long time collector and I am in this hobby because I love retro games so I want as many people as possible to be able to experience these games. If that means emulation or clone consoles, so be it. The important thing is that these games are being appreciated by a generation who didn't grow up with them and I think that's awesome. Do I prefer to own the original game/hardware? Sure, but that's just me and it's perfectly fine if people would rather emulate or find some other means to play them. With prices being what they are, I don't blame them.
Game companies are missing out on tons of money by bot supporting emulation. Especially nintendo.
Imagine an official nintendo emulator for every retro nintendo system. For say 60$ each system paid software no " service".
Official protected file type roms for say 20$ each.
People like me would jump on it. Official supported software.... no more messing around to emulate. Download and play and never have to pirate or worry about viruses and its gonna run the way it should.
I've been saying it for a long time that the problem with the community is the community. Its very unfortunate and of course it isn't everyone. Hopefully it trends the other way one day.

One of the most requested games in our house when family and friends get together is Outlaw (Gunslinger) on an Atari 2600 emulator on our HD TV. These are kids who usually play Fortnite, Minecraft, Call of Duty etc. The hobby nerds take all the fun out of the hobby. And this doesn't just apply to retro gaming. Great video!

Crazy how back in 2015 when i started collecting a lot of my nintendo stuff especially gamecube, the cost of games was at a very fair rate. It wasnt until 2020 when i started collecting for gamecube again when I realized how fucked up retro game collecting had become. Like RGT, I truly think that this bubble will never pop and prices will keep going up indefinitely.
A friend has a full set for the Gamecube. The last games he was missing were insanely expensive. Nowadays, you probably wouldn't manage to buy all the games for the Gamecube at all. I'm afraid this will get worse when eventually only digital games will really be available. I have about 200 games for the Switch. I hope that I will be able to buy missing games for normal prices in the future.
I also bought a lot of old consoles around 10 - 12 years ago and never payed more than 50 bucks except for an NES in OVP with a bunch of games for which i payed 80. Some stuff was just piling up at ebay like new dreamcast peripherals. I think I got a full set of controllers, some memory cards and rumblepacks for 25.
I don't think all prices will be going up indefinetely because the companys will find ways to cash in on the market if it keeps on growing. lol.
Prices won’t go up indefinitely but they will continue to hold at horrible prices.
I'm glad that the prices aren't to crazy here in Sweden. There are a few snes games that is very expensive like the mega man x games, but i bought the Japanese versions instead for a lot cheaper. Yesterday i bought rc pro am 2 to the nes and that's really expensive. It's one of the most expensive to the NES here. Cost like 350-360$ now days which is really expensive. Was a lot cheaper a couple of years ago. Most games have not increased so much, several is cheaper now than a few years ago. Rc pro am 2 is definitely the most expensive game i now own. Otherwise it's like 95-140$ games like little Samson, Chip and Dale 2 and so on that is my most expensive titles.
Also you have to keep in mind that there are no new "Old Carts" being produced by the companies. So whatever is out there is it. This is also why prices will hold. I play through emulation but own 86 NES games. 47 of them are CIB. I'm not willing to pay more than $200 for a cart...and that's pushing it hard. So no Ninja Gaiden III CIB or the original Super Mario Bros for me.
The eBay goodwill yard sale flipper is our biggest problem. Some people are quitting their job to live off the hobby not saying you can't sell your stuff but don't buy stuff just because someone else might want it that's called being a middle man in drugs and is frowned upon 😂 #CRT gang though

When I was overseas for study , my mom gifted some of my old consoles like SNES to my nephew because she was just cleaning up storage space and no idea about the value of my stuff, but I’m ok because my nephew likes those retro games. Then the next winter I went back for holiday and spent some time playing SNES with my nephew. Man , my eyes really hurt when I actually play on those old hardwares,I got so used to 4K 60fps tv , just cannot go back anymore. Emulation is my first choice afterwards, I have no regret leaving those techs behind. I also suggest my nephew not to play too long each time , really bad for eyes.
I have the old consoles and I bought a Retro trio because it's easy and simple. I like having the physical game cartridges for my childhood and sharing it with my kids without all the drama of having 19 old systems hooked up. you are 1000k percent correct! thanks for bringing this up and speaking about it. much respect
Great video , I used to own old consoles like the NES , SNES, Mega Drive , but I dont have them anymore so the best way for me to play right now is emulation. Last year I decided to start buying physical retro consoles. It was fun and especially as I still remember the original space invaders cabinet entering the Arcades. My coolest find was a boxed Super Nintendo Super Mario World bundle which I had when it originally released. After stripping it down to clean, get the correct cables that came with it & being very pleased with my journey. My wife seeing my pride in my mission then said what will you do with it now. I proudly announced that now I have got it working and played one stage it will be boxed back up & put away. At this point it dawned on me what I was doing. No longer was it about the game I adored on release but about bragging rights & it would likely never get played again due to setup time & space. I decided to sell my retro collection & head down the road of emulation handhelds. I am now the proud owner of a Steam Deck, AYN Odin pro & more recent RG35xx. I have all my beloved games to hand & play them daily. Thank you to those that bought my original collection though as I made a nice little profit that paid for my new toys, All this said hats off to those that have the time & space as that is full on retro but for me I wan't retro convenience & see the guy with his kids playing retro on anything as great.
Amen brother. Been trying to do my part to slowly dismantle all of the pompous and pretentious bullshit surrounding RPG elitism over the last few years, I'm absolutely sick of this stuff too.
I remember when I stumbled upon an online version of sonic the hedgehog when I was probably 6 or 7 and I played the mess out of that. My dad was so proud of me because it reminded him of his genesis. He promptly went to the attic to pull it out and show me and he even let me play sonic on it for a bit. He didn’t go get it because he wanted me to “play it the right way” but because he was excited to show me a piece of his child hood. I still played the online version of sonic after that but it was so cool to see the original hardware.
I run into people all the time who just want to play games the "official" way or buy merch that is "official". Then they complain about prices or that thier item died. Or they shame others for not having/using "official" products.

Very well said!! I myself am just now getting back into retro gaming, showing my two kids the games I grew up with. I may be starting with a small selection but I am looking forward to growing the game library with my kids.
I bought all my rare Super Nintendo games way back before the prices went crazy. Super Mario RPG, Lufia 2, Final Fantasy 2 and 3. All complete in box. I couldn’t possibly afford them now.
I did the same recently with the 3DS and Wii U.

100% agree, you get people like this in any collector group. I used to have a fairly sizeable collection of old stuff, but due to life, family, space, I have whittled this down somewhat.
Most retro stuff I play these days is via emulation, it has gotten so good now it's almost indistinguishable to real hardware. Could be via an OG Xbox, Rpi3 or whatever, the kids & I have a great time.
I think part of it is subconscious fear these people have that a) they have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on games that can be experienced almost exactly the same via emulation b) if the cat gets out of the bag that most consoles are very well emulated in 2023 the value of the collection may decline.

As an individual who’s been collecting video games since Middle School and also trying to get people to play these retro games I agree with you 100%. Some people don’t have the means to afford a retro console and some people don’t want that authentic experience, they just want to play the games and that’s all ok. I think the online retro video gaming scene has a lot of big issues but this one definitely needed to be brought to light. It’s about what you play not how you play it. Also I’m curious on your take about DKOldies.
I agree with what you're saying, but I consider the price points to still be a problem too. Yeah yeah supply and demand and all that...but the fact that I'm merely looking for games that are the farthest thing from pristine condition, all I ask is that they work....and they're still $50+ for even that, is crazy to me, and it only goes up from there. I got me an N64 recently, and it came with 5 wrestling games (Nitro, World Tour, Revenge, WM2000 and No Mercy), and I bought Goldeneye and Ocarina of Time...the latter two I had to buy copies that literally look like they've been used every day for the last 25 years just to get a decent price for them and they were still nearly $40 and OoT barely works (I have to keep removing it and reinserting it until it does). And I'm already spent on this hobby...and I'm already considering an Everdrive just to be done with this madness, but that damn thing is $200. The fact that there are people willing to OVERPAY for things is why everyone thinks they need to OVERPRICE. It's still a problem...and all I'm talking about here is low end. I basically had to dig through the trash just to find something reasonable. I shouldn't have to do that.
Wow...I actually agree to the fullest with this one. I don't believe retro game prices will ever hit a plateau or even come down. And people can play what systems they want to play on, whether through emulation, clone systems, original hardware, digital purchases, plug n' plays, etc.
The variety is what makes people's choices interesting.

My friend for 30 years or so is finally getting rid of the majority of his gaming collection. Tons of respect for him because he got kids now and just having a few things and maybe a Mister or Retro pie will be enough to get his fix but also share with his kids. Joy on a kid is what matters.
I have been selling my retro games because of my classic and mini consoles but I was genuinely surprised when I found one of my twins playing the NES Nintendo online service I never set it up for them, but he managed to find his favorite games like Kirby and Mario and started to beat LOL, consider me impressed.
I’ve been playing retro games ever since I was in elementary through emulators,collections,rom hacks etc. And I think it’s really dumb to call out someone for not playing on the original hardware when it’s getting older,more expensive,and harder to play on since the games are gonna look like trash on a modern television through original hardware or not supported at all
I loved collecting classics and I had alot of them before they got too expensive. Now I've just thrown in the towel for retro collecting and discovered the mod scene. My 3DS plays every handheld Nintendo software, my Wii U plays 3 generations of Nintendo, and my SNES mini plays all my favourite SNES games. My Vita also plays alot of playstation classics. I'll still be buying the newer games.
When I was younger, I remember going to a video rental store(shout out to Box Office Video) and renting E.V.O. This became one of my favorite games. When Ebay was in its infancy, I bought this game for $50, just so I could relive the experience of playing it again. In 2017, I had an opportunity to go to California. It was a spur of the moment trip. At this point in time, I was using an emulator. So, even though it was a little sad selling that and my earthbound game, I did it without hesitation. I realized that it was never about owning the physical copy, it was about the feelings I got when I played the game. I still get to enjoy the games I love and I had a great time in Cali. I think that sometimes people forget why they love games in the first place.
I went through a phase myself not so much with consoles, but retro computer systems. I had C64s, Atari 800, TRS-80s, some old Apple IIs, even a complete Coleco Adam with the freaking daisy wheel printer. Once emulators started getting good, I dumped all the old computers that were filling my 1 bedroom apartment at the time and never looked back. Never did miss that ancient hardware...since I can still play all the games and THAT is what matters.
My only regret is when I dumped all this stuff it was the mid-late 90's... and NOBODY wanted old computers then, sold a couple of systems via eBay for nearly nothing. I think the 100% working Adam ended up in the landfill. 😔
I fully concur with your observation. I have witnessed similar types of comments and gatekeepers within our over 40 Retro Gamers Hub communities. Such behavior is not tolerated and these individuals are promptly banned from both the specific group and our entire platform without prior warning. As you pointed out, there is no place for this kind of behavior within the retrogaming community and it is not acceptable. You're right, Mr. RGT. That's the root of it. That's exactly what leads to everything else - the game prices, the grading elitism, how some stores devalue their intake (buys/trades), and overinflate their own sale prices. It starts there.
My thought is what parent has that much real estate in your tv stand to have all 3 of those consoles hooked up at the same time. Plus, you have kids, so things get damaged.
I’m a dad of four, my 8, 6, and 3 year old are all about the games I played in the 80’s and 90’s. The joy it brings me and memories I had as a kid when these came out are renewed when we are playing together. More than that the memories I’m creating with my kids are PRICELESS. We play on the Switch, PC emulators and some of the retro consoles that have come out in recent years. Thanks for speaking out on this. Let’s just enjoy the games, with some friends and family and keep these retro treasures alive.
Right on man, right on. I grew up with the games that are now referred to as "retro games" and it was and still is always about the games to me. Who cares where or how there are played...as long as they are played. I will be the first to say that emulation (and FPGA simulation) is much more convenient than the "old days"....and that is how I play them now at almost 50 years old ;)

Really surprised that instead of these companies building smaller retro units with 40 games on it, if they brought back a original version of those systems and started putting out all thier best titles that they know will sell on carts again they would make bank, hurt the og prices and make money they are not right now due to everyone using emulation.

Grew up in the very late 8-bit, mainly 16-bit era. Been an avid gamer since. Sold all my carts and consoles for £££ whilst at uni. Happily play the old stuff on SNES mini and Mega Drive mini. They're great and look great.
Dude! You are SO right! I think some people have lost focus on what it is all about.. it is about FUN!! Retro games, retro computers, even retro audio equipment (I belong to groups about all of these things..) You find people who will just slam you for using the wrong stuff, or not 100% original, or whatever... I have a FEW retro games/consoles, and a few old computers... but I play a lot of emulation.. it is easy, it is portable, etc.. I love the old hardware for nostalgia reasons, but on many old games, emulation is just as good, maybe better... Thanks for the video.. you are completely correct!!
The thing about it is, the retro scene overlaps with the collector scene and the collector scene by it's very nature attracts compulsive people, and if you know anything about compulsive people they are varying degrees of eccentric. As such the more compulsive types have a idea of what is the right way of doing things. Yet lack the awareness that is only their and others like themselves view. As such they feel they have to impose their views on others.
I agree 100%, and it's unfortunate. Honestly, the gatekeeping and the unholy triple-digit prices are some of the reasons I don't collect retro games that much anymore. I only care that the game is fun, and that's it.
Some of the first retro games i played as kid in the early 2000s were those plug n play systems. I didn’t have have the og hardware but that still got me interested in retro games and collecting as an adult.

I'm on the fence about retro collecting. I started rebuilding my childhood collections when the pandemic hit.
Some things in my collection are...I guess rare. Course the grading community is shady. I still go to shows to buy old games..but always check my gameeye app to see it's actual value for that day before i decide to buy it.
I am grateful though to companies like digital eclipse who make great retro compilations which makes at least these memories affordable.
I don't really care how people play their games. Everybody has the right to enjoy what they like and how they like it.
I couldn’t agree more about it being about the games and not the hardware. I absolutely love collecting original hardware and games but some stuff is just expensive and not everyone is willing to pay some of those prices. As much as I love collecting I can’t afford to buy a lot of the GameCube and N64 stuff I like so those two are ones that I like to emulate instead!

I think this is a social media problem more than any specific community...
I'm a member of quite a few Facebook groups on my various interests, from gaming, to music, to astronomy and history, and I see the exact same negativity in all of them, regardless of the topic.
I wish i had kept all my past consoles, the only one i have is the Wii, but i bought the Mega Drive Mini and Evercade VS which i love. Did want the NES/SNES mini but the price for them are ridiculous! £240 new on Amazon.
You can buy a "cheap and cheerful" android TV box with Bluetooth so you can connect controllers for about £30 and it will emulate NES/SNES no problem

I've owned many old systems in my life. I still have a few. I love watch the younger kids playing the games I grew up playing on the snes, n64, etc. I don't care about what or how they are playing it. I'm just happy that they are enjoying what I enjoyed as a kid. My brother has stopped playing games because of these complete aholes who think you must play it the old school way to enjoy the full experience. Its not about the system its about the enjoyment of said game being by the person. I have a friend who wouldn't shut up about a ps5. He would cry and pout over not being able to afford one for awhile. I don't own one and don't care at this point. This fool would go and waste literally everything, trade everything in and still not be able to get one but would instead get a Xbox or a ps4 then complain some more. The results of his complaining. No one wants to play games with him anymore or much less play at all anymore. So I know people that are like that in any generation of game systems. Its sad that the community that is huge and I love to be in are the ones who destroying and giving the community the actual bad name most on the outside look at us nowadays. I love that father for showing his kids his childhood games and those kids in turn enjoying them as well. Good job dad and thanks rgt for the video and speaking most of our minds for us. I’m happy that I got all the snes games that I want and need. I’m happy limited run made the castlevania OG collection and SOTN and Rondo on physical. And you’re right about prices not dropping as anything vintage electronic never does. Did juke boxes drop? Nope!

I bought a mint manual for snes metal marines as that’s what I need for it to be cib now and now that it’s cib it’s way,way more expensive now. It came with a mint poster of legend of evermore too and which I find odd as it’s not original and it costs decent amount of money on its own.

This video made me subscribe with full bells. I'm have kids that are getting to the age they can play these games. Many games I hold dear to my heart they will be able to play now, because there are modern solutions... I can't keep a CRT just for the small amount of time we get to play together or hunt systems for which parts start failing and they become an issue finding spares for.

I’m just happy to play games with my kids doesn’t matter if it’s current gen or retro stuff I played at their age, cloned or original it’s just great to share this with my children the way my dad and I did growing up

Thank you for posting this , and I agree with you 100%. I love that people are buying the original systems and games, but most of all I want to see as many people as possible enjoying retro gaming. I don't want people feeling excluded or looked down by petty gatekeepers that should just live their own lives and let everyone else enjoy a game and relax. Life is to short to judge people over petty reasons.
Well put. I have never noticed this issue as i dont have any friends that like the old school games but i recently got a rg300 to play some super mario world to take me back and experience it again. Honestly you cant have a better experience playing mario with friends and family being 10 years old but my gosh does it play better in that little device. No more freezing and blowing on the cartrige to get it to work. And finally i can save my progress to finally pass the game. My kids are having a blast also. Play however you want but experience the classics, they are the best 👌
I teach a history of gaming course at our middle school and they love playing some of the classics. Arch rivals on nes has been a hit. We use clone consoles and they love it and just wanna play. It makes me happy that they have fun and some have gotten those consoles. Just opened their minds to greatness.

Every hobby pretty much has their share of gatekeepers! I have introduced my kid to Atari 2600 using the Flashback consoles... mainly the FB portable as it was easier for her to use the controller versus an original joystick. I have the CRT with my original systems in the basement, those are just nostalgia for me but I don't think that's the only way to enjoy retro gaming!
Emulation is the saving grace of retro gaming.

My 6-year-old daughter's been playing Mario Brothers on my game & watch and Zelda II and asking me more and more about these old games and I played. And teaching her the ways not to get upset and to practice to improve your gaming skills and hand-eye coordination.
The carts are still easy to find, I see them every week.

I have to agree that the retro game prices have gotten severly out of hand, though I'm actually thankful for it.
The price point was enough of a nudge to push me off the deep end, and I've ended up learning to mod and repair my retro handhelds and consoles.
I still have all of my original retro games, but I've started to create custom flashcarts to build up my library.
Everdrive has a pretty insane price tag, so I've started looking into just uploading single games to flashcarts, just to preserve that "feel" of loading in a cartridge that we lost with everdrive. (Which, there is a nasty bug in gbc time emulation for pokemon crystal and prism)
I've even started loading romhacks into them as well, and I've learned more about not just the MBC3 cartridges, but specifically the MBC30 that was only used for the Japanese Pokemon Crystal; which, resulted in increasing the storage from 4mb to 8mb.
I've spent a few months salvaging parts from "broken" cartridges to build a flashable MBC30, and I've gotten comfortable enough that I'd be willing to install replaceable cell battery mods into my old cartridges.
Hasn't stopped me from supergluing my dumba- to a few components, but thanks to the scalpers and snibs, I've been having a blast to learning internal architecture of retro consoles, and expanding my collection with viable modded hardware for QoL without sacrificing the nostalgia.
