We’re blasting along at warp speed on board the world’s first fully electric production series motorcycle from a major manufacturer. And, in this case, its easily one of the biggest and certainly the most famous name of them all - the legendary Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company, which is precisely why CarAdvice is attending a motorcycle launch for the first time in its 13-year history.
Does this motorcycle live up to the hype? Anthony Crawford finds out.

They need to make a deal with Tesla to use thier car chargering stations as a port to charge the H.D.
The problem with this thing is it doesn’t make a terrible racket, or vibrate like a washing machine with a house brick in it, doesn’t even leak oil, so the brands existing customers by and large will not be satisfied, regardless of how good it is.
That's because it's boring! Might as well be self driving too.
TheRevolverGuy how do you know that it is boring? Might I ask how many electric motorcycles you have ridden?
@@rsoul7282 That would be a zero! I have to give ya that! But it just doesn't do it for me. If I want smooth and quite I'll just buy a goldwing. Plus if it is fun it would all be undone when I have to charge it again.
+R Soul Please go easy on the insults. I FINALLY found and bought my beloved 2001 Sportster and love driving it more than any bike I have ever had. I will be on it shine or rain because I prefer 2 wheels. With that said, I STILL consider the LiveWire to be an intelligent alternative to any other motorcycle built except for the enclosed bikes in various parts of Europe. Someone builds more charging stations and the 1-hour charging available only at Harley-Davidson dealers problem is solved.
whiteribbonman1 I will be honest here mate, it genuinely makes me glad when someone finds the machine that is the one for them, and I appreciate all sorts of types for what they are. I just hope that folks give things like this new product a chance, and don’t reject it because it is electric and different to what they are used to. Have a good day bud 👍
Testing this bike gave me a whole new respect for Harley Davidson,, Plan to purchase one soon!!!!
Guys I said the same thing when Honda came out with the DCT system on the African Twin once I tried it I will never go back to a cultch system and I have been riding for over 30 years and have had many bikes in my life. I think once they get the cost down and up the range the majority will buy an ev bike and car.
Great video. Clear explanation. Lots of performance footage. Simple.
Yellow fused but would have preferred gold.
Just wondering if there are any accessories for the livewire because otherwise it's a really interesting bike that I might actually get
What a great review! Well done Tony. Pretty much the “gold standard” in terms if reviews in my opinion. Everything I wanted to know, and very clearly articulated. Excellent!
*Outstanding review, Thanks. Here in THAILAND we have electric Golf Carts. No range anxiety! Electric vehicles. Audi, BMW, MG (made in China) Nissan, and Jaguar. All of them include range anxiety. What ever they claim, the fact 200-300 km max. TESLA. No have! No official Tesla, Thailand. Only grey market imports from RH drive Hong Kong. Electric bikes? We will have to wait! But, in the meantime we have ICE motorcycles assembled in THAILAND: BMW, DUCATI, Harley Davidson, Royal Enfield and Triumph. Here is the popular retro styled =RE= Royal Enfield Bullet 500* czcams.com/video/cRqVgGomU7E/video.html
Could they use suspension travel to recoup some power?
I think this is very smart to build this. Every bike maker will be making electric bikes @ some point but they'll also still be making combustion engines
ronnie massart hopefully a maker will make one that goes many many miles further then this over priced crap
@@davidbrooks4285 you guys HAVE heard of the Zero SRF, right?
@ronnie massart you HAVE heard of the ZERO SRF, right?
Not for long. Government initiatives are to phase out all combustion engines; period.
@toast 2 go It's happening. Algae biofuel has lost it's momentum www.power-technology.com/features/algal-biofuels-challenges-opportunities/ Giga factory four is being built in Germany, and more vehicle manufactories are turning to EV. ICE vehicles are inefficient and overly complicated. Petrol does have a future because it's used in pharmaceuticals and manufacturing, but the days of the combustion engine are numbered.
im wonder why the on tank logo isn't in caps ?
Hey now can we buy the livewire 2015 model anywhere?
Does it have a Qi charging pad?
Orange fuse, I wonder if there is an option for a under seat mud guard in stead of that thing that covers the rear wheel, it would give the bike more size
I'll test ride it, I'm open minded, one of the few HD Loyalist that is....
Some will come around
I was at a Harley dealership in Slidell, LA. They have already installed a charging station in front of the main entrance.
I thought the best sound of a motorcycle only comes from 4-cyl bigbikes with big displacement until i hear the sound of this bike its so cool as well, like a jetplane taking off!! I want this!
"No gears." If you Google this question, you get no answer. Thank you for this informative review. The styling is amazing. What is also interesting is that it appears to be able to outrun most supercars 0-60, and yet would lose to a Toyota Corolla top end on the highway! Fascinating.
top speed of live wire is 95, and corolla's is 112 mph . fascinating . . . .
I love this bike please review some more
I'd buy 1 if they were about 10 to 12k, but 30k GEEZ!!!
LOL DILLYNWURTA
Had Harley - Davidson built a cheap electric with low power, low quality and cheap looking they would have turned the first electric Motorcycle into a joke. By setting the quality as high as they have, the young professionals will see the uniqueness of The Livewire Motorcycle that has no hot exhaust pipes, no loud abrasive noise, no smelly oil, gas and exhaust, and realize something truly futuristic can belong to them. Then the Harley - Davidson Nameplate connotes the Future and NOT the Hell's Angels gang of criminals and beer bellies. This is really smart move by Harley- Davidson and will revitalize an industry that has clearly been in decline for years.
NaYawkr tesla can make a car at that price point. Harley is just making their decline faster. With their loyalists old as a doornail, there’s no way they would recover.
@@NaYawkr "Davidson built a cheap electric with low power, low quality and cheap looking they would have turned the first electric Motorcycle into a joke." So what explains the Street series of motorcycles?
" By setting the quality as high as they have" What's "quality" about the motorcycle? Zero has a motorcycle with twice the range and for nearly 1/2 the price.
I like the bright Orange. What I was wondering though, Is it silent?
If you watched the video, you can tell it is.
+Hammer Rocks No it is not completely silent, unless you already have significant hearing loss.
Hahaha! Low-key hilarious burn.
MaZEEZaM no I have one. It’s incredible. I come back with more miles then when I left
I absolutely loathe Harleys for a number of reasons. Yet if I had all the money in the world and had to fill a large personal garage with vehicles I want to own, this would be in it. This actually looks very good. A Harley that I and most people could actually take seriously, one that seriously performs and has a styling that matches what it can do and portrays a sense of purpose and presence on the road, without being obnoxious, annoying and a total joke to most people 'outside the circle'. Well done H.D.
Lets hope more manufacturers follow suit and the prices go down.
Other manufacturers already have better performance and range at significantly cheaper price a 15k Zero SR will outperform this. A 20k Lighning Strike will blow it out of the water with 150 mile range at highway speeds while the live wire will give you 70 miles. the strike can also charge in just 30 minutes and tops out at 150mph the livewire takes an hour to charge and tops out at 110. the only thing the livewire does better than its competition is drain bank accounts. I honestly dont understand how Harley-Davidson can think this is going to work out well for them.
I don't get wh the rear break is not on the left hand instead of the right foot since there is no clutch. Hands are faster and more precise than feet
I don't like there is more than one standard for charging port. I'm sure over time this will chance. for now it seems like a holdback.
Is the Harley Davidson electric sound able to be used by other manufacturers ?
That is great question; they have a patent for the sound their other bikes make...
how much of cost charge ?
what happened to level 2?
There is something called the zero sr
hmmm can they do a cruiser?
What exactly does the rain mode do?
And can you buy this for a first bike?
First bike? What, you never rode a bicycle?
1. Stop you getting electrocuted?
2. If you have enough money I suppose so. The power and torque is delivered in a politically correct way.
+Big Yin Politically correct way? Maybe an electronically correct way?
Why the gas tank?
Does Vance & Hines make a pair of slip-ons for this?
Short shots only 😂😂
He never actually turned it on, weird.
Yeah, couldn’t you hear it ticking over?
That mileage can’t even get you from city to city in Texas.
I think they need to have the gear shifter as the 'regen' selector. I suspect it might be quite intuitive. First 'gear' lots of engine braking, around town ...and 'top gear' coasts along on the highway, with very little 'engine braking. And have the rear brake as left hand lever, where by there's far more feel.
interesting one. you have a future in design
@@endogenic6913 thank you for considering the idea.
A V twin in that chassis and HD would be onto a winner
I'd rather have a modern engine.
-Wow you have a Harley!!! turn it on, wanna hear it roar!
-It's on...
ha
More motorbike reviews pls!!
I saw for the first time today in Redcliffe Qld. Farrrk it was quick off the line
This as such a vivid review. So positively descriptive. I'm buying the damn thing when it launches for sure.
Shiv Shankar Ganesh I have one!!! It increadable
@@jameslevengood2638 Me too and I have a grin on my face every time I ride my H-D Livewire.
Have you ridden the Zero SRF?? You should.
Price ??????
4 drive modes...that's a bit basic. Zero has an app that lets you set everything, so you could combine 100% regen with a slow/safe throttle response.
How much does a Zero cost that you are talking about? Anyone who buys this bike here or a Zero is a complete idiot and should be ashamed! The Lightning Strike Carbon blows away all competition easily in every way!
@@JQUICK21 A Zero FX is around 12.000 I think. That bike you mention has impressie specs but it's a race bike, so you have to be into that.
Patrick Thibaut Nope, the strike is not a racing bike. Maybe the LS-218 is for racing. It cost $38,000 US Dollars. Same company, much different bikes
Zero is the honda goldwing of the electric bike segment . Ssshh Harley don't like that name.
You would probably half the time for charging at home in Aus given we have 240V power as opposed to the US 120V
Here in the states our mains are 240 wire to wire. 120 wire to neutral is what we get at the wall outlets, but 240 is used up for things like electric ranges, so getting 240 for charging a motorcycle is no problem.
Orange Fuse please!
does rineaheart, make racing pipes for it?
Errrm ! it's a non combustion engine it's a EV so it doesn't need a exhausts ! , or are you trying to find the well informed and not so well informed . 😎👍
Barrie Wright gonna go out on a limb here, and guess that he was joking....
@@CoronaJoe 😎 How knows !
I came here to watch the start up and hear it but it was not possible.
Great looking bike, seems very practical with it's high range.
BUT - it doesn't look like a Harley (doesn't sound like a Harley, it doesn't sound like anything) but I bet it costs like a Harley, I was too scared to hear the MSRP.
I would love the see more electric sporty bikes, they seem cost effective and have a shit ton of torque, me gusta.
I heard km and subscribed!
..."158klms more than enough!" It's been a while since you rode in Oz I take it?
You couldn't even do a short coffee run; .. Canberra - Goulburn and back!
In my opinion, .... it's application is very limited and given the AUD$40 you mentioned, .....
Funny thing is though, There are DC Chargers in both Canberra and Goulburn.
Its sad I live in MKE near the Museum but tbh the only way I'll cop one is used.
Thanks for the feedback!
Australia left steering wheel?
Interesting. Range goes down from 140 in town to 98 miles on the road. What if you ride, you know, fast and hard on the road. Assuming the best either you limit your riding to 40 mile radius around the HD dealer's quick charge or you let it charge for 11 hours at home for the next 40 mile ride. All these charging trips to the dealer will probably result in a slew of trade-ins.
The video in and around Portland was proper choice...But I really missed him riding onto the St.John`s Bridge...What a miss!
First in the market?
Bike changes colour very clever
Sounded like those hovering motorcycles from Star Wars (original)... just needs a lift ;)
But yeah, looks great!
Beautiful bike indeed!
What's the price
deviprasadsiva lakkoju 30k
While it is expected to wait until 2020 before Live Wire arrives at Australian shore, it’s still doubtful that this blazing machine will ever land on Indian shore. Price? INR 35 lacs expected.
Lüvv Sürya who fucking cares man. This is an Australian channel.
+Steven Jalopnik Try backing off your throttle! People of other countries like to tune in to Australian information sources to get a different viewpoint.
whiteribbonman1 that’s fine. But no need to come crying to us
Steven Jalopnik : I was just sharing my opinion and Harley’s expected products for Indian market. For a company like Harley that sells its motorcycles all over the world, it doesn’t matter to them what product they have reserved for a specific market. Every market it different. And as any market grows and demands rise, they bring more of their products to that market.
India being one of the fastest developing auto-market, there’s a huge potential for auto-companies to invest here and bring their global products. This is one of the reason India now have almost the entire line up of Harley motorcycles save for few reserved for the US market. With further shift in electrification of auto-sector and encouragement from the government, it is highly anticipated Harley to bring Live Wire to India as well but the lack of charging infrastructure is one prime roadblock for its arrival here. Also, electric technology being new and given it would arrive through CBU route, should Harley consider bringing it here, the price of this motorcycle would be astronomical high which would further impede its growth and demand.
To be noted that India also is an extremely price sensitive market instead of environment sensitive. People here would rather invest their money on a product which gives more for the money than on something which is the future and hence is priced exorbitantly. Still, there has to be an inception some day.
+Steven Jalopnik Crying To “us”? 😆 Not.
This bike looks awesome but 150 ks is bugger all. Most bikes get at least 250 to 400 ks on a tank
"high end street fighter" LOL.LOL.LOL. Most riders wouldn't open their garage door to travel a 100 miles, for 30k you can get a BMW rr1000 that will eat this at every step.....
and also have extra money to spend
So nice. !
That's a really handsome looking bike.
Inovation fron Davidson wow
Most bike buyers want nice sound = not nice and quiet!
+Bextar636 Quiet is QUITE cool! No one to complain about some idiot’s straight pipe set-up but the beauty of your chosen color! If there were more facilities to charge it in fast-charge mode you could out pace any other Harley-Davidson on the road and yet recharge it while stopping for a bite.
The bike looks great. Here at Boom Moto, we are excited to be apart of the Electric Motorcycle revolution. We have one of the most affordable bikes in the US market.
Not much scope there for dealers to sell accessories. That is a big part of Harley.
Maybe Velcro shoes & vynal jackets
Pretty cool
My next bike
I'm sure they're smarter people than me who can explain why this bike would have no gears. I would think that it would allow it to go further at higher speeds, especially since the torque for this engine starts at the first revolution
drag strip regulars, tesla owners, rich folks. this is squarely aimed at them.
Don't be absurd!
Drag strip regulars....haah!
@@davidparker.2227 Who else would pay 30 grand for it?
Should Harley activate the brake lights on the bike when using the regenerative braking feature? How will cars know, especially those who are looking at their cell phones, that the bike is braking? Car drivers already have limited awareness of bikers. Otherwise, a great product offering.
My H-D Livewire does put the brake lights on when I let go of the throttle and not use the front or back brakes at the same time.
I can't see most of the die hard Harley ridder's (baggers) going for something like this. Maybe Harley is trying to attract other buyers, but at Thirty Thousand dollars, they may find they have another odd duck that very few people want to buy.
Harley-Davidson is very smart to recognize the traditional Motorcycle buyer-rider is aging out, dying off, and not being replaced with the same old mentality. More women will ride, and many have the buckaroos to buy a 30 grand toy that suits them, like the new electric Harley. The lack of smelly oil and gas, not to mention exhaust will appeal to many people, and probably draw in older riders who never owned a Motorcycle before but will consider this one. When it becomes the kind of fashion statement it is bound to be, that alone will expand the market for high end motorcycles to the point that other brands will have to join Harley-Davidson in building electric Bikes. There are no burning hot exhaust pipes to detract from the fun of riding a motorcycle. I suspect the next electric model will be a touring model, built for more comfort and less like a bullet bike. But for now, I applaud Harley-Davidson for its audacity and engineering.
beautiful bike, gratullation to harley, it is definetly a surprise.
I like it and if i had the money would buy one . Things have moved on and the internal combustion engine is nearing the end of its life . There will also be old internal combustion motor bikes about well over 100 years worth .
They can keep their overpriced hoveround. If Tesla can sale a car for 35000 Harley should be able to sale a motorcycle for
15000.
You seem amazed that Harley can produce such a modern motorcycle. Don't forget they're in business since 1903 as a motor company.
A good touring day will easily exceed 600 km.........so there's that.
It’s a beautiful bike and u get a lot considering it’s an electronic vehicle, still tho, electric powered vehicles don’t seem like they’ll ever be more than a novel idea.. still can be enjoyed but just novel at its core.
After all the R+D, after all the development and tooling costs, after all the hype and reviews, this game changing motorcycle was dropped from H-D's line-up like a hot potato.
I like it, knock 10k off and I might consider it. Three questions about the bike and one safety thought. What is the maintenance cycles, what is the life expectancies of the battery, and how much to replace when it doesn’t hold a charge anymore. Lastly, but most importantly, bikers already ride with their head on a swivel, I feel with this bike, we’d have to be even more cautious because no one is going to hear you coming.
Yellow Fuse for me!
What about blown fuse?
Love it but cant justify the price
This is the future.
+Danny Rumbles I agree, deSPITE the people that talk with no logic in their viewpoint. Thumbs-Up #2 I am, Tuesday 6 August 2019.
Is it? Then immortality truly is a curse.
that thing looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.....the future is here
This motorcycle is nearly the same as it was 5 years ago when it was first shown around.
I saw one of these in the states..it was loud but in a awesome way!
Here's how to fix this bike... put one of Harley's V-twins on a trailer and turn it into a generator to pull behind the bike. Now you have an unlimited range hybrid! 🤣
Yes please but in a year or 2 after the bugs have been ironed out.
Good for nature, bad for pocket.
It definitely has a cool factor! And I'm sure it's fun to ride? I just don't think we are ready for that yet? "Electric" But I think we're getting much closer.
If HD want electric motorcycles to be profitable they have to address their shortcomings before release. Range, recharge times and cost are big factors. You'll never lure someone into buying these machines unless you address this issue. If they aren't at least equal to their petrol equivalents, they won't sell.
TIME! This is litearly industry first steps.
@@Neojhun Agreed, but these machines are far simpler that combustion equivalents. So price them competitively.
@@michaelhayward107 WTF it has never been done at scale before or this powerful. Just because it is conceptually simple. Makes it crazy difficult to execute well and push limitations. Just to get 50kw CCS DC Charging & beyond 20kwh Battery is going to be very very expensive and difficult to develop. None of them have realy achieved it yet. It will not be cheap anytime soon.
@@Neojhun It may arrive sooner than you think. czcams.com/video/u57pBJG2C7E/video.html
30000 $ ?
wtf?
i think i would myself modify one of my petrol bikes for the price of around 1000$ here in india. With 150kmph and 500km range.
does it radiate your nads?
123 miles on the highway and 223 in the city, who the hell is that stupid to spend $30,000 on a bike you can’t go from state to state?
David Brooks ....I live in New Jersey...80 miles west of Manhattan and 70 miles northeast of Philadelphia.... this bike gets me to both easily enough.... and last I checked those were 3 different states.
Yes but unlike my gas Harley you can’t go from the NY/NJ state line down to MD/VA state line without a charge,I don’t see the purpose spending this amount of cash for a bike you can’t go all over with
@@davidbrooks4285 ... well, I won't argue that the price is high... would much have preferred that it retailed in the $15K range.... but its new tech and they need to recoup R&D costs....Time will fix all of that... with time and competition the prices will come down...and hopefully the fast charging points will increase... mitigating the limited distance problem.... but 223 in City driving is not bad... as a daily commuter to work and back it works...
a lot of people are laughing at this build, technology is moving so fast that it wont be long before everyone will be laughing at the old ramblers that we used to ride.
Sometimes it is. Sometimes not so much
I like it.
A sexy bike. Idc if it’s electric
Sorry but no vibes or sound means no longer a Harley period. Put a tonka emblem on it lol .
Why would you want a quiet Harley or any other bike ,,and no gears were is the fun in it !!!
Silence is Golden. People who sail know this, wind and waves, no intrusive man made noise to ruin the experience. And who needs gears to change when the engine has more torque than most people can handle. Electric power is the future, it is clean, cheap, almost instantaneous, and blessedly quiet. It allows you hear the sounds around you, like trains and buses, heavy trucks, and emergency vehicle sirens. I have to think this machine will revolutionize the whole motorcycle industry, for the better.
Want,
but too expensive.
