Imploding Drum

  • The atmosphere applies a pressure of about 100 000 N to every square metre on Earth's surface. We take this pressure for granted because we have the same amount of pressure pushing out. But what happens when the pressure of the atmosphere is applied to an object with no outward pressure? It implodes. In spectacular fashion.

      @unpronouncable2442 Před 7 lety +30

      Oh I do realize. I also realize that high frame-rate cameras were available 5 years ago. I also realize that windows movie maker or youtube annotations was also available and writing down words "Not real slow motion. sorry we did not have expected this to happen so fast" on the video does not cost a dime. This is the same to real slow motion as CSI show "image enhancement" is to real image enchantment. It creates misconceptions, it's ugly, and most importantly it is not necessary. If instead of spending hours of pointless work on fake slow-mo they said "This happened way to fast for our cameras. Look at this frame the container is normal and very next frame it is crushed. This camera is doing X frames a second so implosion just happened in that fraction of time. Amazing" I would be fine with that. I'm all for youtubers putting a lot of work into their videos to make them as best as possible. But I'm also for CZcamsrs working not just hard but smart and giving their audience credit by acknowledging their intelligence.

    And OceanGate is yet another one of the subs that went beyond its crush depth. But yes, this is an accurate representation of the Implosion. In the experiment, the air pressure is deliberately lowered to cause this reaction. However, for the sub accident, heat doesn't have anything to do with it, it's simply because the deeper you go, the higher the external pressure. The sub was pressurized to surface level for us to breathe normally. Increasing pressure inside the sub wouldn't work either, it's at a pressure where it's not survivable anyway.

We learn today that the crew in the boat above heard a LOUD sound at the same time they lost comms AND tracking to the transponder (like the “black box” on planes). And it happened close to the beginning of their descent. They imploded at 3,500 feet, which is only a little more than a quarter of the way down.
      So the guys in the boat knew at only 1 hr 40 minutes into their journey that they were gone. They kept it to themselves until they could find visual evidence.

    • @GP-Music.
      @GP-Music. Před rokem +2

      Maybe, but if it happened at the bottom of ocean that pressure is way higher than in this demonstration. If it really dramatically imploded, which I would kind of expect at that depth and with the amount of pressure, more likely to be jelly with bits and pieces in the mix. If in the implosion the tank broke open then whatever fish and crabs that live that far down will not be far behind, kind of like ringing the dinner bell to them.

      @GP-Music. Před rokem +4

      @@clasifi1 Pretty much, if I had to bet. I would bet on it happening the instant they lost all comms. Maybe they heard the walls groan or ping milliseconds before it happened. If that's the case it was the last noise they heard, far outside of human reaction time & immediately after they're dead. Safety is never a waste. Titan would be exhibit A on why you don't cut costs on safety. Cheers, stay above water friend!

    • @midnightodellewest1999
      @midnightodellewest1999 Před rokem

      @clasifi1 No, they would just turn into dust. According to Dave Corley,a former nuke sub officer, who posted this on Quora: “When a submarine hull collapses, it moves inward at about 1,500 miles per hour - that’s 2,200 feet per second. A modern nuclear submarine’s hulll radius is about 20 feet. So the time required for complete collapse is 20 / 2,200 seconds = about 1 millisecond.
      A human brain responds instinctually to stimulus at about 25 milliseconds. Human rational response (sense→reason→act) is at best 150 milliseconds.
      The air inside a sub has a fairly high concentration of hydrocarbon vapors. When the hull collapses it behaves like a very large piston on a very large Diesel engine. The air auto-ignites and an explosion follows the initial rapid implosion. Large blobs of fat (that would be humans) incinerate and are turned to ash and dust quicker than you can blink your eye.M”

    • @GP-Music.
      @GP-Music. Před rokem +1

      @@midnightodellewest1999 Yeah this is it basically^. I've never seen the remains or lack thereof, of a massive catastrophic implosion, much less from those pressures and under water so figured jelly would be a good enough description, nothing identifiable whatsoever. I doubt their brains even consciously had any time whatsoever to process anything at that point. It was so fast it's hard to get some to understand it. It takes more time to snap your fingers or blink your eyes than it does have a implosion under such pressures.

      Extremely fast. Technically faster due to the depth pressure being thousands of times more than on the surface. Would have been way more quick and violent. That’s just wild tho. Apparently the navy heard a loud tapping sound the minute the sub lost communication with the main ship. Wonder how it happened.

    • @Vmurph
      @Vmurph Před rokem +2

      @@tonymonxana992 Not a tapping sound. They heard a single loud sound at the same time they lost comms AND also lost *tracking* to the transponder. The transponder is like the “black box” on airplanes. So they knew on day 1 (just an hour and 40 min after they started), that the sub had imploded. The tapping was days later, which was apparently unrelated. I also learned that the implosion happened at only 3,500 feet. Which means they only made it a little more than a quarter of the way down. A quarter million dollars for a quarter of a trip, ending in death.
