  • After running over head, and resealing stc oil manifold it came down to some bolts the truck salvage yard didn't tighten.

    Wish I could show my dad this build. 30 years of being a diesel mechanic from ‘61 till he retired in ‘91. Bet he worked on 444’s a few times. He passed away in 2017.

    It is bittersweet to find a simple fix to a long shot after problem; the agony and Ecstasy of the long attempts to fix it and then the Ecstasy that it finally is fixed but then the aggravation that it took that much effort.
    Pretty much why I gave up trying to make a living as a mechanic on cars: I just suck at it. I only do so work on my own car and truck is because I can't afford real mechanics

    I had 3 STC big cam IV's and i had ZERO problems with them and i would take one over any engine built in the last 20 years!!! And I had over 1.5 million miles on all 3 of them and none of them had ever been rebuilt!!! The trick is just like most any diesel is preventive maintenance!!!!! That means when it starts acting like something is a little off with the way it's running or doesn't feel or sound quite right? Don't just keep driving it until it breaks!!!

      I'd like the know more about them.

  • @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353

    I guess I should have explained it a little better in the video, what was happening was the oil pump was sucking air with those 2 flange bolts being loose it wouldn't build the right oil pressure to advance the timing on the stc injectors.

    Oh come on, you sure this is final video? We didn't get to see it drive out of shop and a test run down the road. I had the 444 in a Ford CL9000 COE which a mechanic allegedly rebuilt. Every time I'd run it the entire exhaust system ie; exhaust manifold, turbo, and exhaust pipe would glow red which could even be seen in daylight. Never figured that one out. One day about 20-miles north of shop on the interstate I heard a pop and shortly after engine seized up as I pulled to side of highway. Found oil pan plug gone and all the oil gone. Called tow truck for ride to shop. Once there I got under truck, pulled oil pan and turned motor easily with large ratchet and socket on dampener. Don't know what ever happened to that truck. Had a Pete 377 with 444, same mechanic did something to the truck then I got it. I ran it for awhile and then it began vibrating badly one day. Took back to shop and found transmission top and side bolts were missing to bellhousing and leaning backwards on the bottom only bolts. Not too long after this I got tired of the crap and stopped driving company trucks and bought my own.

    I have a 89 k100 with a 444 in it and I mine is running about as rough as this one but it's not smoking AS bad. It sounds like it's sucking air and missing a little or something like this truck in the videos problem I've changed all the fuel lines and the fuel pump is freshly rebuilt. I'm lost when it comes to a Cummins lol

      @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353  Před 7 lety +1

      The oil pump is mounted externally on these, make sure the 2 bolts flange is tight on the tube from oil pump to pan, the lower end of that tube where it meets the pan has a o ring that gets hard and gets hard and brittle and makes oil pump suck air and really messes stc system up. You can pull your valve cover off and look down by the Injector s on exhaust side at the stc oil manifold . Check it running and look and listen for oil leak s at manifolds. The other thing is someone might have set the valves and injectors wrong.

    Long shot here.. I’m working on my 444 changing injectors .. on cylinder 3 the stud that the valve bridge goes on was snapped off .. looks like it’s been snapped for a good while .. rod has color of heat on it… are those twisted on or molded with the head. ?? I’m just trying to figure this out.. I really don’t want to removed the head .. I started drilling it out and seems like it’s twisted on but cannot get it out for life of me .. what would be your opinion ?

    Hey man how are you hope all is well awesome video I have a 444xt in a 1990 international 9400 that I’m having some issues with idle hang time and rough starts with smoke ever since I changed the fuel filter. Very weird I also changed my oil at the same time but ever since I changed out that new fuel filter I’ve been dealing with this issue before it would start nice and strong like when you did at the end of the video now it starts like it’s -10 degrees outside even when it’s only 50 outside. If you could give me some advice that would be great because I’ve asked a lot of people and not many guys around my area are familiar with these engines. It clears up and runs just fine when the truck warms up and I drive it for 10 minutes but when I first get in and drive it it’s annoying to shift because the rpm’s have that hang time.

    Do know if the small cam 400 Cummins has that same oil manifold cause mine continuously smokes white when running and warmed up iv done the over Head on it thinking maybe that was it but it wasn't my oil pressure is 60psi then drops and stays between 40 to 45psi

      terry wilkins Yeah, I learned alot about this stc oil system on this one, I am used to hooking a laptop up for most newer engines, had to revert back to doing things the old way.

  • @548tire4

    So was the whole engine getting low oil pressure cause it was sucking air?

  • @codyalston6350
    @codyalston6350 Před 7 lety +3

    We have a 444 stc motor that bends injector push rods. Has not had heads off or any changes. It has done it 3 time two of them on startup. We are out of ideas.

    • @codyalston6350
      @codyalston6350 Před 7 lety +1

      grease monkey101 the first time it was all 6. The second it was 3 of the and the last it was 3. But not always the same ones. Rack has been run by two shops. Now I have a new set of rods and when I try to run the rack myself the motor locks up by hand once it puts pressure on the rod. It's almost like the injector can't compress but it does this on all 6.

      Cody alston Same cpl is the one in the video. Run your overhead just like the one here. Start at A mark on a accessory drive. If valves are loose on # 1 adjust Injector to 90 inch pounds ( no foot pounds) and valves are intake 14 and exhaust 27. go in firing order . A is 1 or 6 B is 2 or 5 and c is 3 or 4. Firing order is 153624.
