The Descendants of Thomas Jefferson - Shannon LaNier

  • When I was in the second grade, I told my classmates one of my great grandfathers was President Thomas Jefferson. The class, seeing my darker skin color, laughed at me and my teacher proclaimed me a liar. My mom visited school the next day to defend me and tell my teacher that yes, indeed, my family had proof their lineage traced to Jefferson and the woman he enslaved, Sally Hemings. These are some of his other descendants.

    This should imply he kept his own children as slaves, and didn't free them?

      I remember reading his own kids were granted freedom when they reached adult age. And the hundreds of other slaves were sold off after his death.

      @@josephmoore9706 well I do know that he kept the brothers and sisters of Sally as slaves even after taking them to France where slavery had been abolished and they were technically free... took them back home, kept them as slaves for another year or two then freed one or two of them ( the males). Still a very absurd concept (edit: to put it lightly)

    • @StockyDude
      @StockyDude Před 4 měsíci +2

      He freed the kids as adults. He didn’t free Sally because freed slaves had to leave Virginia. However, after Tom died Sally was given “her time”, meaning that she was never assigned tasks anymore and given a pass to roam when she wanted, essentially an unofficial retirement. You know what her job was when Tom was alive? She was in charge of managing his wardrobe. Any man that lets a woman pick his clothes everyday is a simp. At first, I felt bad for her because she was a teenager and he was taking advantage of her. Then I read that he begged her to go back to Virginia with him after she threatened to stay in France where she knew she was automatically free, and how he let her pick his clothes for him, and then Tom looked like a simp to me.

      The majority of historians who have actually reviewed the evidence agree that it wasn't Jefferson. And those that disagree only say that evidence is inconclusive.
      Nobody says that Jefferson was definitely the one who had sex with her. There's zero evidence for it aside from him being one of over twenty individuals who could even be considered. But there's a LOT of evidence that it wasn't him. From him only mentioning her twice in his writings (in passing at that) to the sheer number of people who were around there estate who never suggested, to the French secret police heavily monitoring Thomas Jefferson in France.
      The only reason to believe he slept with hemmings is because of bias against him.

    @spiffygonzales5160 Před rokem +19

    NOT TRUE.
    DNA evidence concluded that it could have been between 25 members of Jeffersons family. That does NOT mean Jefferson himself slept with hemmings.
    On top of that, the supposed love affair in France couldn't have happened since Jefferson was confirmed to have been monitored by the French secret police who made no such note. Jefferson himself also seldom made any note of Hemmings and when he did he only referred to her in passing.
    What's more likely is that Randolph Jefferson was the one to sleep with Sally Hemmings, since he was well known to hang around the slaves.
    The Jefferson Hemmings myth started as nothing more than a political mud sling by a guy who was actually ran out of his own countryside due to the myths he spread there (Scotland I think, but I'm unsure).
    The reason it continues today is because of all the race hustling done by politicians and the modern day desire to view everything from the past as containing some dark secret. (I.E X person from the 1700s was racist).
    Stop believing things immediately upon hearing them and look them up. That, NOT letting people "fact check" for you or suppressing people's ability to communicate, is how you stop misinformation.

      Sally Hemmings knew who fathered her children. It was long passed down orally in the Hemmings' family that Thomas Jefferson was the father. He was at Monticello at the time of each conception. Why else would he have only allowed her children to go free without setting slave catchers on them?

      @CornpopTheBadDude there's a few slave accounts after the civil war (madison hemings, Israel Jefferson) that support it, but seeing that it can be (and was) used as a political weapon, I can understand why he would want to keep it lowkey. The dates of conception for the Hemmings children match Jefferson's personal presence in Monticello, I can't tell you if the conception dates match for Randolph's visits, if there's any sort of record of that. Also the Callender guy is a slimeball, but at least one of his political accusations (Alexander Hamilton having an affair) ended up being true, so he at least has a track record of being correct. There's also supporting circumstances, like Jefferson only freeing Sally's children and none other. If they were his brother Randolph's mistress and children, why wouldn't he exchange them with some of Randolph's slaves?

      Must keep in mind that we each have a mother and father and so one side is probably Caucasian for those who look more white.

    When Sally was in France, she could have stayed there as a free slave. She chose to move back to America so maybe she did have true feelings for Jefferson. He was famous and an interesting man. Also, maybe he thought of her as a girlfriend/wife as well. There is no proof that he had any other affairs and she looked White. Jefferson guarded his privacy more than most and Sally was probably the reason.

      She was legally considered black at the time, which at the time, also kind of meant you were sub-human. He also didn't raise any of Sally Hemings children

      @@micah4242 I agree but wonder if there were real feelings involved between the two of them. Do we know for a fact she was pregnant when she returned to the US? Sally Hemming's story is intriguing. I wish there were photos of her.

      @@workingman-xl6xh The pregnancy was written about in Sally's son's memoir. She was 14. He was 45 and owned her. Not really a recipe for romance. Until he freed them as agreed, Jefferson teated their children like any other slaves, while he was very affectionate toward his white children and grandchildren.

    Ok but Thomas Jefferson wrote the constitution the single greatest legal document in human history. So as a man by todays standards(and honestly even back then) we would condemn him but the good certainly outweigh the bad. Shades of gray people.
