  • Why didn't George Washington and Martha Washington have any children together? Was George Washington sterile because of a disease he contracted in Barbados? Was Martha Washington unable to have children due to a past injury? History interpreter Anette Ahens explores these popular theories.

Same with Alexander Hamilton. Washington preferred the Daddy/Son relationships.

I find it sadly ironic that the father of our nation couldn’t father children of his own. Given his relationships with his stepchildren, Lafayette, and Hamilton, I think he would have been a good father.

West Ford was born anywhere from March 1783 to June 1784 on George Washington's brother's plantation ( forgot the name) 100 miles away from Mt. Vernon. Washington came back to Mt Vernon on Christmas eve 1783 after spending 7 years in the war. West Ford was most likely already born or he was born just a few months after Washington returned home. There was no way Washington was the father. Washington didn't visit his brother's plantation until 1787 because his brother had died. West would have been 3 or 4 years old at that point. West Ford looks A LOT like Bushrod, Washingtons nephew. Bushrod was the son of Washingtons brother and lived on the plantation that West was born on. Some other things to keep in mind. Martha in her first marriage had 4 kids in 8 years. There is no evidence Martha had post partum complications that could have caused infertility. What we do know is that Washington had several illnesses all of which can cause infertility in men. Small pox, measles and tuberculosis all of which Washington had can cause infertility. Physicians that have studied Washington believe tuberculosis was the cause. Most people think that tuberculosis only infects the lungs but it can travel elsewhere in the body including the male testicles causing inflammation and scarring and therefore creating a non surgical vasectomy. Despite what this video said there is no evidence that measles causes infertilty in women. DNA would only show a family line, not the specific father. If I were placing bets in Las Vegas on who was infertile it would be George hands down.

I literally just came from a video where people are debating the validity of the idea that George had a child or children with a slave.
I dont know how valid this could have been, because without a test it's hard to say if he was truly shooting blanks or if his wife was in fact unable to bear children.
But it did often happen that the servants were taken advantage of, and it could very well have happened. Though we will never truly have proof.

Martha had 4 children in 8 years with her first husband. She was a fertile myrtle. She had no problems getting pregnant or carrying a baby to full term. Her pregnancies were uneventful. No postpartum infection or severe bleeding. So there was no reason to believe that she all of a sudden became infertile. George Washington had several illnesses all of which could cause infertility in men. Small pox which he contracted when he went to Barbados with his brother Lawrence who was dying from tuberculosis can cause infertility. On his return from Barbados Washington spent several months combating pleurisy. Given the timing and duration of this illness, it was quite probably an initial pulmonary infection with tuberculosis contracted from his brother, TB can spread to the male genitals causing infertility. He also had a couple other illnesses that can cause male infertility. Given the fact that Martha already showed she was able to get pregnant, GW was the one that was infertile. Venus was the slave of John Augustine Washington, GW's brother. She was not a slave of GW. She lived on the plantation of John Washington, 100 miles away from GW's home, this is where West Ford was born and raised. GW returned from the American Revolution to his home Mt. Vernon on Dec 24, 1783. West Ford was born either that spring in 1784 making it impossible for GW to be the father. Or he may not have been born until 1785. George Washington did not visit his brother's plantation until 1787 when his brother died at which point West Ford would have been 2-3 years old. West Ford's father was either one of the following. Bushrod or Corbin. John Washington's sons or possibly John Washington himself. George and Martha had no relationship with West Ford. It was Hannah Washington, the mother of Bushrod and Corbin and the wife of John who took interest in West Ford. In her will she wanted to make sure he would be innoculated from small pox and would learn a trade. This child, West Ford was not GW's son. GW was the most famous person in the world. He had hundreds of people visiting his home every year. No one ever reported seeing GW having an unusual or close relationship with an enslaved child. That is something that would have been noticed back then and would have made the press. In GW's second term as President the press was very vicious towards Washington, accusing him of many things. One thing he was never accused of was infidelity. If the press had ever suspected GW had a slave child it would have been all over the press. DNA testing cannot be done here as it would only show the family line and not the particular father. Most people just get random information about all of this on the internet without looking up facts and details unfortunately.

@@NeTxGrl I should've elaborated, after Washington's friend asked him to take his Sons William & Frank. As never having children with Martha, & spending the War of Independence with William, something that should be taught.
I believe Washington considered him or them his Sons. William was given an inheritance of 30 silver dollars a years(3,000$) and spent the rest of his life at Mount Vernon.
While portrayed as monsters after they are Dead, I find it Impossible to spend your Life around people, especially with your Father dead @ 11 & not becoming attached to them. West Ford was born between March 1783 and June 1784. Washington was away fighting in the war for most of that time period. He returned to Mt Vernon on Dec 24, 1783 after spending 7 years in the war. West was either born by then or his mother was still pregnant with him on a plantation that was 100 miles away from Mt. Vernon. Washington didn't visit his brother's plantation until 1787 when his brother died. West was already a young child by then. Martha already had four children by her first marriage. Washington had several illnesses when he was younger and prior to marrying Martha that cause infertility in men. West Ford's father was most likely Bushrod, Washington's nephew, or possibly Bushrod's brother or Washington's own brother. This video also mentioned Martha had measles, but measle does not cause infertility in woman and she did not contract it until they had been married for a year. They were more than likely already trying to have a child in that first year. So the infertility problem already existed.
